Anonymous Posting Analysis: Part 2

outfit copying her mother's outfit from years earlier

Please note:

1.  The note is addressed to John Ramsey, and not to Patsy and John Ramsey.

Authorship within an anonymous letter often has the identity of the writer within it.  That it is not directed to Mrs. Ramsey is something that should be considered.
2.  Elements of Patsy Ramsey's life.

What is known of Patsy Ramsey?

1.  Former beauty queen
2.  Cancer patient
3.  Mother taking daughter to pageants.  There is one photo of Jonbenet and mother in almost identical outfits.  The picture of Jonbenet is above.

For part 2, please take these three known elements of Patsy Ramsey's life to see if anything in the language may have come from these.  For example, in number 2, cancer, cancer patients experience many medical scanners, before, during and after treatment.

It is also helpful to make lists of various things experienced in these elements before hand.

You should also have already begun working through the statement deciding if any phrases were more likely to have come from female or male writers, education level, and seeking to know any source of information.

There's a lot of social how-to in it that might stem from pageant experience. Here's my quick rewrite to show what it brings up in my mind:

The pageant will be exhausting so rest up. If we detect a change in circumstance, we might move JonBenet up in the line-up. Break the tiniest rule and you're axed from the competition. Complain and you're out. Collude with another contestant and you're out. Talk to the losers and your reputation is shot. Cheat and you're gone. We will check to make sure your little darling isn't augmenting her body; stuff that bra and bye-bye. We've seen it all before including the sneaky tactics practiced by moms who are all too familiar with the milieu having been there themselves. All you have to do is obey the rules and you'll preserve your daughter's right to compete. Break 'em and your angel is ruined.

Thanks for a new lesson, Peter. It is interesting! The writer of the letter is def. female. I don't think men would remind other men not to forget a large bag for the $$, or tell them to be rested. Sounds like a mother. She sounds educated. She knows John pretty well. Patsy wrote the letter.

I thought Patsy was diagnosed with cancer years after Jon Bennet was killed, therefore I don;t think the word "scanned" is something that would be in her vernacular at that time, but what do I know?

I am trying to determine if there are clues in the letter about the author's participation in the brutal murder of her daughter, or if she is just covering up for John? The letter does not sound stressed enough for someone who just witnessed the killing of her daughter, or even seen her lifeless body. I think Patsy is covering up a crime for John. She may not have known what happened, except that her daughter is dead, and she needs to write a ransom note.

I am going back to read again!

"Mr. Ramsey. Listen carefully!"

Using his title demonstrates deference. A command with exclamation mark is demanding obedience. Immediately following deference- it implies that obedience is not assumed. Imagine the letter without Line 1. See how much more demanding it seems. Respect is being shown unintentionally. Mr. Ramsey is told to listen, not read, carefully. This implies the letter may have been rehearsed verbally before being written down.

We are a group of individuals that represent a small foreign faction.

What is he to listen carefully to? First comes "We". Although the letter is written by one person, the desire is have the reader believe that an entire faction of people are writing it. A "Group of Individuals" is an oxymoron. An oxymoron by its nature cannot be true, it's a verbal contradiction. As mentioned before, no one calls their own group "foreign". Nor do they diminish it by calling it "small." So this group, or more likely, this individual wishes us to believe she represents many others, but a small group of many others. This posturing sentence tries desperately to intimidate but fails. It's logically disconnected and cannot be truthful.

We xx respect your bussiness but not the country that it serves.

"We respect your bussiness" - more deference. 'We don't hate you, In fact we respect you, Sir, but we don't respect your country so we stole your daughter and demand your obedience.' Ridiculous! Does John Ramsey's computer supply business serve a country? No, John Ramsey's company was successful, but it served a much smaller demographic. So in addition to deference we have exaggeration of his importance. Would a stranger who picked him randomly to target have this need to embellish him? Butter him up, so to speak? Another sentence intended to intimidate which fails. "We hate your country." would have made sense.

At this time we have your daughter in our posession.

This third sentence should have been the first of importance. Instead they began the message by identifying themselves and then declaring their motives, followed finally by the revelation of their actions. 'We have your daughter' is the fundamental message which should have followed "Read carefully!"

She is safe and unharmed and if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to the letter.

Saying she is "safe" is particularly unusual. She's obviously not safe, even if she weren't already dead, she's kidnapped for ransom with threats to kill her. How is that "safe?" This is fabrication, particularly as the sentence is constructed of a series of idiomatic structures, "safe and unharmed", "want her to see 1997", "follow our instructions", "to the letter" - indicating the writer is far from being "foreign", and is instead attempting to enter into an imagined scenario.

Idiomatic speech is often used to pull a listener and bond with them, persuading them that you "speak their language." Think of the times you use the idiomatic speech of teenagers, for example. Isn't it most often when you are trying to connect directly with a teen, or alternatively, to masquerade as a teen to another non-teen, for sake of humor or irony? This is the case in this letter, idiomatic speech is used to pursuade and masquerade.

You will withdraw $118,000.00 from your account. $100,000 will be in $100 bills and the remaining $18,000 in $20 bills.

Specific details of how to formulate an apparently random amount of money? This is so contrived. "From your account" - What, does he have only one? Does it matter where he gets the money. Couldn't he cash in some bonds? Sell off some stock? It's just assumed he keeps hugs sums of money in his account. This along with the amount being exactly the amount he received as a bonus indicates someone who knows he has that amount in his account right now.

Several things stand out to me keeping Peter's above info in mind.

13. delivery will be exhausting so I advise you to be rested.
Exhausting is something a woman would say, not a man.

14. monitor you getting the money early, we might call you early to
Monitor - medical? In another line "catch" is used
22. If we catch you

25. You will be scanned for electronic devices and if any are found, she
Why not "searched"? Another medical term.

You stand a 99%
28. chance of killing your daughter if you try to out smart us. Follow
29. our instructions and you stand a 100% chance of getting her back.
"You stand a chance" and the use of percentages makes me think of cancer statistics.

I just keep thinking it is a freak who is obssessed with James Bond/who-done-it/mobster movies. It does seem to me that the writer is genuinely fantasizing/intent upon getting money which I don't know how to make sense of. You can see that this is where the person is really doing some imagining--picturing everything about the money, pick up from bank, delivery (even warning that they have scanners to pick up on if he is wearing electronic devices when he brings the money).

Anonymous said...

Monitor is something they do if they are "watching." As in surveillence-cameras, tracking, foot or car tagging,etc...which is probably how they found out about the bonus.

Cancer patients are already exhausted. Often depressed, too. I knew a woman who thought she'd survive breast cancer. She did not. It was sooo sad, too. Her husband had been placed in a coma due to a black boy jumping the curb and running him over while he was weedeating his yard.(Keeping race issues going is a big thing). Often they fear people stealing their medications. A real fear today; maybe not back then. I know one man that was extremly paranoid. Perhaps he had reason to be. Perhaps it was the medications.(I assured them I had to ask LE to move prior to entering their drive).Others are tormented by people making fun of their particular type of cancer. Some will stalk them and leave cigarette butts near their home, damage their property when they leave, etc.

The conspiracy theorists and their UFO ologists have been stalking doctors in western states. Perhaps these people forge prescriptions as well as checks, credit cards, wills of the elderly, etc.

Perhaps this is how they represent foreign factions.

99/100% makes me think of Ivory soap.

Nope! Think you're looking for a needle in a haystack trying to make that comparison.

Scanners were used then.Monitors, too.Familar with LE tactics and measures. Computerish with military or LE background. Not medical, imo.

The author does not want Ramsey to speak, talk, communicate in anyway. They just want him to do as he is told. Military would be my first guess.

Anon @ 6:08 Please read Peter's post above. I was considering the note from that perspective.
Please note:

1. The note is addressed to John Ramsey, and not to Patsy and John Ramsey.

Authorship within an anonymous letter often has the identity of the writer within it. That it is not directed to Mrs. Ramsey is something that should be considered.

I work in the medical field. Yes those terms are used elsewhere, but because of Patsy's experiences they are probably part of her internal dictionary.

You and your family are under constant scrutiny(in a pageant, contestants would be watched and judged on everything they do)as well as the authorities. Don't try to grow a brain (not a lot of pageant contestants are considered highly intelligent-more concerned with their looks than anything else) John. You are not the only fat cat around so don't think that killing will be difficult.(this sentence makes no sense to me, what does not being the only fat cat have to do with how easy it will be to kill) Don't underestimate us John. Use that good southern common sense of yours. It is up to you now John!

Letter begins addressed to Mr. Ramsey but then at the end of the letter, his first name is used three times in 4 sentences. It is as if the letter was written to put the focus on John and not have any connection to Patsy. If she wrote it, which I believe she did, she made sure to distance herself from the letter and any motive "the kidnappers" had for taking JonBenet.

She is safe and unharmed and if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to the letter.

"to the letter" is extra words but writing the letter is on her mind as she gives the demands.

I thought it odd "if you want her to see 1997" rather than "if you want to see her again". Was this Patsy tying things to the year as in "and Miss XXXX of 1996 is......" most beauty queens reign for one year and then a new beauty queen is selected. Was she already thinking of the next year's pageants that would be missed in 1997.

Do you believe Patsy murdered Jon Benet because of jealousy or do you believe it was an accident at the hands of John and Patsy covered for him.

Part 1 of 2

Line 10 "...make sure you bring an adequate size attache to the bank."- A foreign faction group is not going to care what you use to pick up the money. Moreover, using the word adequate as an adjective speaks to higher education (as does attache). Common kidnappers call it a suitcase.

Line 13 "...I advise you.."- Advise is also a higher education word, in this context. It is more formal and polite than a suggestion or demand. It is also very soft language for a foreign faction group or a kidnapper.

Lines 14-16 The sentence structure is extremely awkward here, as if the author has had no experience with a kidnapping operation before. This presents an immediate problem, as the note is intended to convince the reader that: the foreign faction is highly organized (knows the specifics of John's business, watching John's every move, etc.); skillful (knows the amount of his bonus, knows the layout of his home well enough to bypass alarm systems and kidnap his daughter, etc.); capable of killing JonBenet; and has an issue with the U.S. government. The words themselves though reveal both an advanced education and a good grasp of the English language.

Line 17 "deviation"- Another advanced English word

Lines 18-19- Why would a foreign faction member make this threat? It reveals an intimate knowledge of John, his family relationships, and his grieving process. According to close friends of the Ramseys, the loss of his older daughter Beth was very traumatic for John. Is John such a major player on the world stage that a foreign faction would know this and use it as a weapon? Hardly. The term "remains" in also uncommon in ransom cases. Most kidnappers of that ilk refer to "____'s body". Remains is a more respectful term, used by those with an emotional attachment to the deceased or those conveying respect for the deceased and compassion for the survivors.

Foolsfeedonfolly said...

Part 2 of 2

Line 20 "advise" and "provoke"- Both are more formal and proper words, uncommon to your run-of-the mill kidnapper or foreign faction. For a foreign faction angry with the U.S., they surely could have picked a more influential (politically, socially, technologically, etc.) and wealthier target than John Ramsey in Boulder Colorado. The whole premise for the kidnapping was supposed to be anger at the U.S....after all, they like John. Deception. It seems the foreign faction forgot about their cause.

Line 22 "If we catch you..."- Change in language(Monitor became "catch")without a corresponding change in circumstances. Sounds like a Clint Eastwood or Arnold Schwarzenegger movie line, doesn't it?

Lines 23-27, 30 These lines contain more advanced vocabulary skills(alert, tampered, scanned, electronic devices, deceive, Law enforcement, countermeasures, tactics, and scrutiny). The term "Law enforcement", is respectful. An anonymous foreign faction with an aversion (intense dislike)for the U.S. would not attribute respect to our law enforcement(Lines 3-4). Also, wouldn't a foreign faction specify FBI, as this would be an international kidnapping case?

Lines 31-34 The tone of these lines (informal words, slang phrases, casual sentence structure)signals a personal rapport with John/degree of relational closeness, as opposed to the more formal wording used elsewhere in the letter. It's as if the writer can't decide which he/she wants to be; the slightly impersonal(yet compassionate)foreign faction member or a tough local street hood. Deception.

Line 33 "Use that good southern common sense of yours."- This presents an enormous red flag. John was born in Nebraska (not a "southern" state)and lived in Colorado (also not a "southern" state). Why would a foreign faction associate John with "good Southern common sense"? On the other hand, Patsy Ramsey was from Parkersburg, West Virginia (a "southern" state). I can see "good southern common sense" being an inside joke between Patsy and John, referring to her southern background. Clearly, it had meaning to the author of the ransom note because it was included. Is it plausible that a foreign faction would be familiar with such a colloquial expression? Hardly.

Lines 31-34 Note the repeated use of John's name. Why would the author need to continually address John by name here, when the entire note is written specifically to John? It fells very contrived, as if the author is acting out a part unfamiliar to him/her.

Sus said...

I believe Patsy murdered JonBenet and wrote the letter. The tone of the letter to me is an underlying warning and threat to John Ramsey from Patsy Ramsey...get me out of this or else.

"Mr. Ramsey. Listen carefully!"
Only addressed to JR and the writer uses listen rather than read as if used to speaking to him...or trying to. Said forecefully.

"We are a group of individuals that represent a small foreign faction"
Even though there can only be one writer, it is WE and a group...representing a foreign faction, no less. Calling in the reinforcements to speak to JR that the writer was so forceful with the line before.

"We xx respect your bussiness but not the country it serves."
This is such an odd statement. Who would feel the need to play up to a work-a-holic in a ransom note but Patsy. I would love to know if the Ramseys fought about John's work.

"At this time we have your daughter in our posession. "
At this time are extra words. Did Patsy see JonBenet in as someone else's possession before? Now she has taken her back? She calls her "your daughter" as if this is the case.

"She is safe and unharmed..."
JonBenet was lying dead in the basement when the writer said this. Yet the writer thinks of her as safe...from what? The letter is to John Ramsey.

"if you want her to see 1997..."
It's almost like the writer has her mind twisted at this point. If you just make this go away, we'll see 1997 and so will JonBenet ...all of one mind. This has to be Patsy...she can't unmesh from her daughter.

"you must follow our instructions to the letter."
Must is more like pleading. Follow instructions would have suffixed. "to the letter" could mean exactly or it could mean that letter was on her mind. Or I believe it was Patsy's clumsy cover up and way of telling JR what she had done.

.

Re-reading and see that I missed this...

Line 21 specifies "Police, F.B.I., etc.", while Line 27 refers to ""Law enforcement". Another change in language without a change in circumstances.

Forever Curious said...

Your analysis gave me a couple of new thoughts. Who would naturally exaggerate his importance? His wife either because of her admiration/love for him or for the status it gives her.

Withdraw the money from your account. Seems to distinguish it from our joint account. Why would kidnapper- even one who knew you got a big bonus- tell you to withdraw money from your account? The point the kidnapper for ransom would make is give me $x. The kidnapper couldn't care less where the money comes from. With that kind of money coming in a lump sum, why assume it would be in a bank and not invested in stocks or some other assets? Patsy would know where the money is. Few if any others would.

Sus said...

Notice it is not a foreign faction, but small group of individuals who REPRESENT A FOREIGN FACTION. This is business speak, which may be why the next line on JR's business follows. It's how JR may have spoken about investors.

My guess is that the writer, who I believe to be Patsy, heard him speak in this manner and is speaking his way. Or she is mocking him in speaking this way.

It depends on Patsy's personality which I know very little about. Either she's naive and immature and trying to speak like her husband, the worldly business owner, or she's outsmarting him by mocking his own words.

1. Former beauty queen
2. Cancer patient
3. Mother taking daughter to pageants. There is one photo of Jonbenet and mother in almost identical outfits. The picture of Jonbenet is above.

The first one, “Former beauty queen”:

The line, “Make sure you bring an adequate size attache to the bank.” This sounds a lot like the instructions on forms I have filled out for activities involving my kids. “Make sure you bring suitcases large enough for all your laundry.” “Make sure you bring bags that are big enough.” “Make sure you bring enough clothing for the week.” Things like that. Perhaps the instructions for the kiddie beauty pageants JonBenet participated in had instructions similar to that in their Contest Rules, and the phrasing stuck in Patsy’s brain. Plus, like a rich man such as John needs to be told what size briefcase or bag he will need to hold money.

“The delivery will be exhausting so I advise you to be rested.” One of the first “rules” in any sort of competition is to be rested. It is reinforced over and over. Why? Because it will be a tiring or exhausting day[s]. This sentence didn’t even need to be included in the letter; it is novelization.

“You and your family are under constant scrutiny […].” Beauty pageant contestants are under constant scrutiny while onstage and sometimes while off-stage. You have three or more judges watching you onstage, critiquing your walk, smile, turns, steps, head tilt, chin lift, everything. The author could have written, “You and your family are being watched.” That’s actually scarier, to my mind, because you don’t know exactly when you are being watched.

“It is up to you now John!” That sounds like something a coach or parent might say to a competitor or contestant, just before they walk on stage. “I’ve done all I can do, now it’s up to you.”

brosnanfan said...

The second one, “Cancer Patient”:

“[…] if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to the letter.” This sounds like the possible conversation that might take place between a cancer doctor and their patient. Patsy had Stage 4 ovarian cancer, a very serious diagnosis. I can see one of her doctors saying something like this to her: “If you want to live to see 1994, you must follow our instructions exactly.” Considering the severity of her illness, it is probably something she heard more than once. This sentence doesn’t need the first part to make sense; of course the parent of a kidnapped child would follow instructions, because the implication is that the child is in danger.

“Make sure that you bring an adequate size attache to the bank.” Again, this line. Perhaps in the course of cancer treatment, she would have been told or received literature which told the patient to bring an “adequate size” bag or piece of luggage for their clothing and belongings.

“I will call you between 8 and 10 am tomorrow to instruct you on delivery.” The last time I had a procedure done at a hospital, I had a specific time to arrive but then, as in the Army, it was hurry up and wait. I was told that my procedure would begin between Xam and Xam, but because of a logjam of patients they couldn’t say for certain what time. Maybe Patsy had gone through a similar experience during a procedure or multiple procedures. Alternately, she could have been told that she would be called between Xam and Xam with results of a test or procedure. Again, since her illness was very severe, this could have been a process repeated several times.

“If we monitor you […].” Patients are monitored in a variety of ways; sometimes just with the eyes of doctors and nurses, and sometimes electronically. “We will monitor you for changes over the course of [time span].” It could be changed to read, “If we see you […].”

“You will be scanned […].” Patients often go through scans of many different kinds. The phrase could just as easily been, “You will be searched,” or, “You will be examined,” or, “You will be checked.”

“You stand a 99% chance […] You stand a 100% chance […]” Often, when talking about cancer, people speak in percentages. They will say something like, “The patient has a 60% chance of surviving the next three months,” or, “The odds of beating this are 75/25,” just another way of saying percentages. It could just as easily read, “You stand a good chance of killing your daughter if you try to out smart us. Follow our instructions and you stand a great chance of getting her back.”

“Use that good southern common sense of yours.” This could have been said to Patsy on multiple occasions (and she probably said it herself to others), but perhaps someone said it to her during her treatment in the context of Patsy feeling down or like giving up.

brosnanfan said...

The third, “Mother taking daughter to pageants”:

“I will call you between 8 and 10 am […]” Pageants are often first steps towards another career, such as in commercials or movies (think of Eden Wood). Casting calls are part of auditioning for commercials, movies, TV shows, etc. Patsy would have been aware of this, being a veteran herself, and she had probably talked about “calls”, either concerning herself or her daughter. Also, I think calls are part of pageant lingo.

This is a difficult one…that is the only thing I could come up for that category at the moment.

brosnanfan said...

A question: Has Burke ever been totally cleared? Could Patsy have been covering up not for John, but for Burke? I know he was only nine at the time, but if children are exposed to a highly sexualized environment (in any way), they can become sexually curious early. Children that age and younger are capable of being curious about sex, to the point of childlike experimentation.

One more thing: I remembered what Peter has said about when a caller makes a call to 911, and looking at the first thing they say. For example, if they greet the operator with a salutation, or if they ask for help for themselves but not for the victim, or if they launch into screaming and unintelligible gibberish, or if they get straight to what is happening and asking for help for the victim. If we treat this as a 911 call (I know it isn’t, but let’s pretend), what is the first thing that is said?

"Mr. Ramsey.
Listen carefully! We are a group of individuals that represent a small foreign faction. We xx respect your bussiness but not the country that it serves. At this time we have your daughter in our posession. She is safe and unharmed and if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to the letter.

It starts with a greeting to a specific person. It tells them to listen, then identifies themselves. It tells what they believe and respect. And THEN it finally gets around to telling that they have “your daughter” and that she is “safe and unharmed”. It ends with instructions to follow directions. Four things before it even gets around to talking about JonBenet.

That tells me that the author (or caller, since I’m still pretending that this is a 911 call), is not in a hurry to get help for JonBenet, because the person knows she is already dead.

Forever Curious said...

Reread this after reading others' comments. A few more thoughts:

LL 19-20. " The two gentlemen watching over your daughter do not particularly like you so I advise you not to provoke them." God the father and son (watching over the deceased JB) are angry with you for what you did to JB so don't do anything to make it worse// this was a family that was religious enough to talk about being reunited with JB in heaven

Continuing: "Speaking to anyone about your situation, such as Police, F.B.I.,
etc., will result in your daughter being beheaded." More religious imagery? Speaking to anyone about your situation, i.e., what you did. Not speaking to anyone about the kidnapping, your daughter, or this ransom demand... but "your situation." Beheaded? This was 1996. This was long before any of the highly publicized beheadings in the terrorist era. Of all threats she came up with beheading? Where did you hear of beheadings back then? The Bible. I also wonder whether the choice of beheading- of a glam little beauty queen- is mockery- you can have your trophy. This also points away from Patsy though- who would even mention beheading in connection with her own baby?

Deceit is another concept talked about a lot in the Bible.

One reason for religion on the writer's mind- JB died on Christmas day.

her body was covered in a white blanket- representing purity?

If Patsy is the author of the note (which I believe), the phrase "we are a group of individuals" could also hint at tension between John and Patsy, something for which there are other indicators as well.

Something forces the people behind the ransom note to be in this together and stick together, but they are not really a united faction (a family, a married couple, parents) - they are individuals, each of whom has their own reasons why it is better for them to cover the other´s back.

Two things 1) about 1/3 lines is about jonbenet dying 2) so many comments that could be seen as flattering to John, the respect for the company, the good common sense, the "fat cat" -- especially that last one always stuck out to me as something that would have been written by someone based on his/her own perception of himself/herself in the community. The letter is crazy long but there is something especially gratuitous about that line -- don't think we won't kill her because there are other far cats around? What does that mean? That they can then go kidnap the child of another fat cat if he doesn't hand over is 118k? That 118k, aside from its other problems, also reminds me of the Austin Powers "one million dollars" -- something that might have seemed like a large sum to someone in one context (ie a bonus) but is patently absurd in another context -- a sum sufficient to commit repeated kidnap and murder. It reflects a small minded self perception -- that they are viewed as "fat cats" in their community because they are in possession of a bonus this size. (this is Ivysleuth from iPhone for first time please excuse typos)

John says one of the most disconcerting parts of Patsy's death was the idea of his son Burke, who was 18 at the time of his mother's death, having to lead his life without his mother there by his side.

At this time we have your daughter in our posession. She is safe and unharmed and if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to the letter.

This 'time,' and 'want her to see 1997'is very revealing, imo.

What time is that one might ask? It's Christmas and New Years Day is off in the future of about a week.

Follow 'our' intstructions TO the 'letter' but not IN the letter?

The phrase about puting the money in a 'brown paper bag when you get home' stands out to me...I don't live in the US and don't use brown paper bags so I think it's strange that a 'foreign faction' would choose to say that. How would the author know there was brown paper bags in the Ramsey house? Also if the bag going to the bank has to be of suitable size for the money, would they not also need a suitable sized brown paper bag to transfer it to? How big are the brown paper bags generally?

Florida said...

If you place the ransom letter in the past tense, it becomes obvious that it was written long before the night JonBenet was killed. This letter clearly states that the child is alive and has been kidnapped with detailed instructions, (knowing full well she is now lying dead in the house), but which would have been the case had she actually been kidnapped prior to the night she was killed; which appeared to be the intruder's intentions at the time the letter was prepared and ready to be left for the Ramseys after snatching or killing JonBenet. On that particular night however, the letter is moot.

The letter as written, has no bearing whatsoever on the night JonBenet was killed. It makes no reference to the holidays, any holiday festivities observed or this being christmas night, all which I believe would have been important to a kidnapper had an abduction been planned during the holiday season, and would have referenced the special occasion, in particular on that special night.

The individual writing the letter hated John Ramsey with a vengence, and would have delighted in pointing out his misery on christmas night had the letter been written that night. This would also apply to Patsy had she written it, but there is no reference to christmas. This is important, had the letter been written on christmas night or at anytime during the holidays.

The intruder found his opportunity to exercise his vendetta against John Ramsey on christmas night, with his carefully practiced kidnapping letter ready prior to christmas night. For whatever his sick reasons were, he abandoned his plan to kidnap JonBenet; IF he ever intended to kidnap her at all as the amount of $ in question was peanuts and just a game in the letter. The proof is in the pudding; he tortured, raped and killed her in the basement instead, leaving the previously written letter behind which implicates John & Patsy entirely; that being his intentions from the beginning.

I believe he always did plan to brutalize and kill her and do not believe money was his object. Killing JonBenet was his primary goal to settle his vendetta against John Ramsey. Also to set his wife up and make her look involved as well, with them both being the key suspects. This person intended to destroy John's life in every way; his wife's life, his family, his business and his finances; and did. What I wonder is why? What did this sick individual have 'on' John Ransey? Or did it all start out as some bad busines move John made against someone of a criminal mind? We'll never know.

There are many ways of interpreting the letter and many varying opinions, line by line. Right or wrongly, this is another way of looking at it. Fla Anon

S + K Mum said...

I agree that the letter is bizarre, childish even, it made me wonder if the Ramseys had any older children. (I don't know much about their family!) The letter makes no sense at all given that Jonbennet was killed and left in the basement of the family home.

Lis said...

I'm going to go with "wrongly" lol... I don't mean to offend but, Florida, you have not done any statement analysis on the letter. You keep posting your opinions based on what you think happened or didn't happen in the case, but this is a statement analysis site. You need to take the letter and analyze it line by line and show what each sentence is telling and why.

Lis said...

Here is another oddity about the attache statement. The writer does not appear to realize that $18,000 is not going to take a huge attache, unless they are planning to insist it is in $1 bills or something. It is another instance where the writer seems to be drawing on movies and tv shows, picturing a suitcase bulging with stacks of money (probably representing millions of dollars).

Lis said...

"The conspiracy theorists and their UFO ologists have been stalking doctors in western states."

Could you please provide a reference for this statement? A link to a news article, perhaps?
Thanks.

Lis said...

Yet- the writer also is threatening that JonBenet will be killed "immediately" at the most trivial thing, which would forfeit the money, and also threatens that "the two gentlemen" "watching over her" may just decide to kill her on their own (which makes no sense in and of itself) because they "don't particularly like" John Ramsey, which would, again, forfeit the money. The writer adds that John is not the only "fat cat" around, implying that they can easily turn elsewhere for the money.

It seems like the writer cannot decide exactly what their motive is.
Political? Money? or personal dislike for John Ramsey? it swings around between all of these.

Anonymous said...

Agree S+K, why spend that amount of time writing a letter but then don't remove JonBenet from the house.

Lis said...

If I were thinking like a kidnapper, I would probably write a note something like this:

Ramsey-
We have your daughter. We want x amount of money in small bills. Have the money ready. We will contact you tomorrow with instructions. We are watching you. Don't try anything funny or she will be killed.

If I was writing as a member of some group with political aspirations, I suppose I would make that known by signing the note with that name.

Anything beyond this is fluff and absurd.
The writer of the note not only adds a ridiculous amount of detail, but also restates many details in at least two different ways. We have studied the tendency to bolster a lie by adding too much extraneous detail, I believe the author of this note is trying to make the note seem legitimate by adding too much detail.

The following are all words/phrases that say "woman" to me. It is not that men never use these words but that they would be highly unlikely to use them in this circumstance:

Mr.
Listen carefully!
respect your bussiness
in our posession
safe and unharmed
to the letter
Make sure
adequate size attache
delivery
exhausting
advise you to be rested
we might call you
arrange an earlier delivery
pickup of your daughter
deviation
remains
proper burial
gentlemen
watching over
do not particularly like
advise you
provoke them
catch you
You will be scanned

You stand a 99% chance of killing your daughter if you try to out smart us. Follow
our instructions and you stand a 100% chance of getting her back.
constant scrutiny
Don't try to grow a brain John.
Don't underestimate us
good southern common sense of yours.
It is up to you now John!
S.B.T.C

The odd bit about 99% and 100% seems like female math thinking

I believe S.B.T.C. possibly was meant to say "S.T.B.C." (soon to be continued) and the author mixed up the abbreviations. If so, this is not how a male would conclude a ransom note.

The author begins with "we" but soon changes to "I"
The author begins with "Mr. Ramsey" but soon changes to "John"

Also, what kidnapper is going to embed the phrase "you can try to deceive us" into their note?

Foolsfeedonfolly said...

Lis- Excellent point! $100,000 in 100's and $18,000 in 20's is not that big of a stack or wad. It would easily fit in a standard size attache/brief case. That brings up another good point already mentioned here, why only $118,000? John was worth far more. The $118,000, being a bonus, was most likely considered "extra" by the family. Why would a representative of a foreign faction that is able to monitor and scrutinize both the Ramseys and LE (not to mention knowing where to find paper & pen, having the time and freedom to write both a practice note and a 2 1/2 page ransom note, and knowing the layout of the house), not ask for more money? Obviously, the odd amount was in the author's mind for a reason. If the man gets an $118,000 bonus, he clearly has far more. In the author's mind though, the rest of John's money was off-limits for some reason (what a considerate kidnapper). Perhaps the "foreign faction" forgot the exact amount of the bonus. Perhaps it would be too telling to ask for the exact amount. Seriously, how many people would know about the amount of John's bonus? John, Patsy, maybe Burke & JonBenet, one or more bank tellers (if John or Patsy had inquired), whoever signed the business account checks, the business' bookkeeper, maybe a personal accountant, and anyone Patsy or John told. It's a limited number of people. It wouldn't be hard for LE to determine who knew that information. The other issue here is that the kidnapper took the child that Patsy stated repeatedly in interviews was "the most precious thing in the world to me". Where does that leave Burke? It seems as if Patsy was fixated on JonBenet.

Florida said...

Lis, thank you for telling me what I "need" to do. The only thing I "need" to do is pay my taxes, keep on eating and live til I die. What you "need" to do is keep on wasting your time like you've been doing; that is, spending literally HOURS upon HOURS analyzing a stupid nonsense "kidnap" letter that is of no consequence whatsoever. Don't you get it? The letter is moot. THE CHILD WASN'T KIDNAPPED and never was intended to BE kidnapped! Got it now? All it ever can wind down to is OPINIONS, none of which mean a hill of beans.

As for MY time, it's worth money; which is exactly where I think I'll be spending more of it in the future instead of wasting it here reading about a ridiculous hoaxed up bizzare so-called kidnapping letter that never will be resolved, nor can it be; and which doesn't pay me one thin dime even reading it, like some of you, over and over. I find the fundamentals of statement analysis fascinating, but not a bunch of hocus-pocus some of you keep pounding out on your keyboard, when I honestly DO have more and better things to do with my time.

Carry on. No offense meant, of course. Fla Anon

Reading and re-reading this "ransom" note, Lines 18-19 ("You will also be denied her remains for proper burial.") is such an oddity. Suffice to say, few (if any)kidnapper-potential murderers are concerned about proper burial of their victims. This "kidnapper" was. Why? Because he/she had an emotional attachment to the victim. This kidnapper also knew that a proper burial would be important to John, who had already lost one child. How could the kidnapper have known that?

Interestingly enough, John confirmed how important a proper burial was to him here http://marriage.about.com/od/celebritymarriages/p/ramsey.htm (Quotes About The Marriage Of Patsy and John Ramsey-the last quote).

Anonymous said...

John had some from a prior marriage one of whom had recently died in a car crash. Together they had Burke who was 9 at the tme.

Lucy said...

Patsy wrote the letter. It's her language. It shows both anger at and affection towards her husband. She alternates between positive and negative language towards him. She loved him but the marriage was in trouble. She was very angry with him when she wrote it, but there are still deep feelings there for him. JonBenet is completly depersonalized. She is an object, "your daughter". She was dead when this was written. I believe that Patsy wrote this on her own without John's input. He would have done a much better job of it. His letter would have been short and to the point. None of this "Make sure you are well rested" nonsense. He was a very successful businessman. He knew how to write something with only the necessary information to get the job done.

John knew it was a fake immediately, however. The letter clearly stated that she would be killed if John told anyone, even a stray dog. Yet the first thing John did was fill his house with people. He didn't waste one minute on the idea of keeping the situation quiet. He opened his doors wide and yelled it from the rooftops. The only possible explanation for this is that John knew there was no kidnapping. He knew there was no kidnapping immediately, yet he did not search the house until he had a house full of people and witnesses. Then and only then did he look in the basement for his daughter whom he knew had not been kidnapped.

In summary: Patsy wrote the letter with no input from John. John spotted it immediately as a fake. John did not then search for JonBenet, until he was safely able to find her.

From this, it is my opinion that Patsy killed JonBenet in a fit of rage and tried to cover it up. John saw through this immediately, had a, "What the hell did you do??" moment, and then decided on the spot that rather than lose his wife too (and put the family through the scandal) he would help in the coverup.

Anonymous said...

Well then by all means PLEASE go spend your time in better ways! LOL The fact is you read here and you posted here; trying to make it seems that you are above everyone else is clearly an issue that is sensitive to you. oh, no offense, of course.

Lucy said...

I believe that Patsy's rage at JonBenet came from her jealousy of the child. She was living vicariously through JonBenet, by pushing her into the whole pageant lifestyle. Patty the retired beauty queen was getting older, and no longer turning heads. So she dressed up her daughter and used her in Patty's stead. She did this a bit too well, though, because JonBenet got more attention than Patty did.

I know through a casual friend of the family (John's more than Patty's) that John adored JonBenet. His whole face would light up when she walked into the room. He would drop whatever he was doing to pay attention to her. I know there have been suspicions of sexual abuse, and I won't speak to that either way, other than to say that our mutual friend never saw anything that would point in that direction. JonBenet was never hesitant or inhibited around her dad, nor was she overly uninhibited. She acted like a normal little girl who adored her daddy.

John paid more attention to JonBenet than he did Patsy, I think, based on the evidence from the note that their marriage was in trouble. I think whatever happened between Patsy and JonBenet had its roots in her resentment of her daughter.

Lucy said...

The only living child in the house was Burke. And he can be eliminated as the letter-writer, because there is no way even a bright nine year old could have come up with this.

"Listen carefully!" sounds female: this is a phrase that could by a teacher or someone who frequently lectures to groups. Also, Patsy may have used this type of phrase with Jon Benet before she went out on stage giving her directions on how to act. In short: someone who lectures or instructs could use this type of phrase. Really--it could be any group--like a sergeant addressing his underlings, etc. The phrase could be male too--even in who-dun-its where the police chief is briefing the other officers on a case. Again, right back to the movie lines in the note.

I read in Wiki that there had been 100 burglaries in the area prior to this murder. Why? Were they setting up the neighbors or others?

I sounds like more of Gunderson's and that other guy that likes to profile people crap. Anything for copyrights and promote themselves.

Not only does keeping this case alive futher their agendas, it also spurs others to do the same.

After reading about McDonald and the druggies that were Gunderson's following, it became clear that these people are always available at a moments notice to take the blame or at least cast doubt. It seems Gunderson was in Memphis, Dallas, and California during his career. Conspiracy theories are his claim to fame.

A great occupation for the drunken, drugged out offspring of the U.S. military's offspring and their recruits when a dog and pony show is needed to cover their azzes.

I thought of this when going through the neighborhood and noticing a "Crocidile Dundee" wannabe sitting somewhere that looked like he was hiding. Noting his plates-Columbia State-I asked for directions. He didn't know the neighborhood he claimed and stated he was only here working construction. I asked if he were working on the roofs and he said yes. I inquired what else he did. When he realized he might be put to work, he stated he was an insurance adjustor. Where he was sitting all the houses had already been fixed a couple of months ago. Perhaps something else had been claimed or was about to be.

Lucy said...

To me this speaks even more strongly to Patsy as both letter writer and the one who killed JonBenet. She is scattered and experiencing adrenaline dump. She is not thinking clearly. She doesn't know how or where to dispose of a body, so she needs to buy herself time to figure it out. She now needs to write the kidnap note so that JonBenet will be assumed to be elsewhere, not in the house, and wrongly assumes that the basement will not be searched and the body not found. Jonh is nowhere in this letter - this is all Patsy. If he had anything to do with this, it would have been the typical short and sweet ransom note: We have your kid, give us $$$$$, we will call with instructions, don't call police or she dies. The end. The multiple pages of scattered babbling is all Patsy being a mess and trying to sound convincing. I believe she wrote it before John knew of the death. John participated in the coverup, but was stuck with the note because Patsy read portions to the 911 operator. He knew the house would be searched, so he "found" her in the basement.

Maggie said...

With the "We xx (crossed out) respect your bussiness...": Was the writer originally going to refer to the name of his or her group as xxxxxx? Perhaps thinking he/she would need to refer to his/her group again in the letter and wanting to keep the name secret?
This reminds me of the way banks will print most of an account number on a receipt with a series of xxx's so that noone can read and steal the account number. Also, credit card companies and receipts from credit card purchases frequently will print out the 1st 2 sections of the credit card number as xxx xxxx so that noone can steal the number.
Who would be familiar with this? Someone who worked in finance? Or someone who makes frequent credit card purchases?

Does anyone understand what the writer means by "if we monitor you getting the money early"? What would early be since the writer has said they will call John the next morning between 8-10 am to instruct about delivery? Wouldn't John only be given the window of the day the letter was received to pick up the money? How could he pick up the money early??

"Any deviation OF my instructions" is grammatically incorrect: it should say "Any deviation FROM my instructions" and is not a common mistake. It could indicate English as a second language.

The write capitalizes the "P" in "Police" as well as the "L" in "Law enforcement" This is someone who does not have a good grasp on fundamentals of capitalization--the failure to capitalize the "E" in "Enforcement" if one is going to think that the "L" in Law shows a lack understanding of the rules of capitalization. The writer however uses "educated" words such as "advise", "instruct", "deceive", "scrutiny": My deduction is the writer's verbal skills are better than their writing skills. HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL OF EDUCATION.

"You and your family are under constant scrutiny as well as the authorities"--grammatically incorrect--speaks to a lower level of education. First mention of anyone besides John and Jon Benet with the mention of "family".

I think the crossed out xx should be looked at more closely. What kind of person would try to write the name of his group as a series of xxxx's and then change their mind?

Just my thoughts.

What better example to draw from than the kidnapping of (female) Patty Hearst?
To me, S.B.T.C. is similar to initials used by the S.L.A, and some believe to stand for the Christian "saved by the cross".

Had Patsy Ramsey read Patty Hearst's biography? Had she seen Patty Hearst's biopic, originally shown in 1988? Or a rerun?

The statement analysis of the ransom note has been completed and deception indicated. This is now a presupposition that Patsy wrote the deceptive note and you are working through it much like anonymous work is done: seeing if a profile emerges.

It is not statement analysis to learn if it is truthful or deceptive.
