Ex-Marine To Be Released From Mexican Jail Friday

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Twenty-seven-year-old former Marine Jon Hammar of Palmetto Bay will be released Friday from a Mexican prison, according to U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
Hammar was arrested over the summer in Mexico because he carried an antique shotgun over the border. He and his family and said it was an honest mistake.
“No American should be in a Mexican jail for five months without being able to have his case in front of a judge,” said Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL). Nelson made a direct appeal to the Mexican ambassador to the U.S. “We’re grateful; this is a good Christmas present.”
In a recent photo, Hammar was shown in prison chained to a bed causing concern amongst his family.
Hammar’s troubles began in August when he took off with a buddy to Costa Rica to surf and deal with post traumatic stress from the war.

The rifle, a family heirloom, was actually cleared by U.S. Customs.
“Customs weighed the gun, measured the gun, I think took pictures of the gun and gave him paperwork to fill out and then he took that paperwork across to the Mexican side, declared the gun and was immediately arrested,” said Olivia Hammar.
In a prior statement, a spokesman for the Mexican Embassy stressed that possession of any weapon restricted for the use of the army in Mexico is a federal crime and must automatically be prosecuted.
“All it is, is that the barrel of the rifle was this length or the other length. It was not like he was trying to start a militia,” said Ros-Lehtinen.

INDIANAPOLIS – Prosecutors have charged a homeowner, her boyfriend and his brother with murder after causing a massive house explosion last month that killed an Indianapolis couple and decimated their neighborhood.

Marion County prosecutor Terry Curry says Monserrate Shirley and the others were arrested Friday morning and charged with felony murder.
Shirley's attorney has said she and her boyfriend were away at a southern Indiana casino when the explosion happened Nov. 10 in the Richmond Hill subdivision on the city's far south side.

Authorities have said they believed the explosion was intentional and caused by natural gas.

The explosion killed Jennifer and John Longworth, who lived next door to Shirley's home. Five houses were destroyed and about 90 houses in the subdivision were damaged, costing an estimated $4.4 million.

RE: The Apocalypse ordered for 12/21/12

Dear Earth.

We apologise for the fact your expected full apocalypse failed to materialise, this was due to a backlog of orders.

Our delivery company
Wrath of the Gods! was unexpectedly overwhelmed with orders for the latest Furby, Wii U and a pesky dancing toy that looks suspiciously like 2 tennis balls on top of each other.

When they contracted to help Santa with his presents they miscalculated the amount of work required to manufacture, wrap, deliver to the northpole and deal with any returns.

As a result the end of the world has been cancelled for the forseeable future.

Refunds have been made to all relevant accounts with our apologies.

We will also give all future customers a 15% discount on any Apocalypse order over a population of 500 million.

When our delivery company is available to accept apocalypse deliveries again, we will notify you via burning bushes/flaming letters writ large across the skies/send mighty portents/possess qualified prophets (delete as applicable) so you can make arrangements for delivery of said apocalypse to you/a secure area such as neighboring moon or your galaxy.

A signature may be required for some apocalypses depending on level of calamity.

Thank you for you patience and we look forward to doing business with you again.

Have a nice day.

~ heads off to naughty corner for not taking the end of the world seriously enough~

School Shootings: Protests As NRA Speaks Out
The US gun lobby calls for armed protection of schools after the Sandy Hook massacre - as protesters target the news conference.8:42pm UK, Friday 21 December 2012

Email
America's most powerful gun lobby has defended the use of firearms and argued that armed guards could have prevented the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association (NRA), called on the US Congress to immediately pass legislation to place guards with guns in schools by the time classes resume from winter breaks in January.

He said the proposal was aimed at stopping the next killer "waiting in the wings", claiming that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun".

Banks, sports stadiums, airports and court houses already have such protection, he added.

"If we truly cherish our kids more than our money, more than our celebrities ... we must give them the greatest level of protection available," Mr LaPierre added.

He argued in favour of a "model school shield" programme consisting of volunteer patrols to be implemented at every school nationwide, at any cost.

The NRA's comments came exactly a week after a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 young children, at the school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Former Republican Congressman Asa Hutchinson, also speaking at the news conference, said armed, trained guards would be part of the programme but not all of it.

He said local school boards could decide on a case-by-case basis if schools should not have guards.

Mr Hutchinson called the NRA a natural choice to head up the "potentially life-saving effort" because of its gun safety, marksmanship and hunter education programmes.

Protesters were quickly removed
Two protesters from the social justice group Code Pink interrupted the news conference, holding banners in front of Mr LaPierre and shouting that the NRA "is killing our kids".

They were quickly removed from the room.

Mr LaPierre also suggested creating a national database of those with mental health issues.

And he blasted the media and video game industries as "a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells and stows violence against its own people".

The NRA's propositions come as President Barack Obama vowed to address gun control, and appointed Vice President Joe Biden to lead a working group of administration officials and outside advisers to offer recommendations by January.

Parents and administrators' reactions were ranging from hesitation to anger over the NRA proposal.

Superintendent Hank Grishman of the Jericho, New York, schools on Long Island said he was outraged by the idea.

He said putting more guns in schools will not make children safer, and could even put them in the line of more gunfire.

Parent Helen Gym in Philadelphia called it "extraordinarily opportunistic".

Many of the nation's schools already do have armed school resource police officers on campus.

On Friday morning people in Newtown and across the nation observed a moment of silence to honour the shooting victims.

Gunman Adam Lanza, 20, also killed his mother one week ago before later taking his own life at Sandy Hook Elementary school.

Not sure what happened to my other post...I'll try to remember what I said. It was basically that I was happy that this Marine gets to go home to his family, and what a nice Christmas present that is for all of them. I also wonder how drug cartels can run entire towns, but he is arrested for an antique shotgun.

Also, OT...further info on the Indianapolis house explosion. It was for insurance:

(I will sign in this time, maybe that was the problem.)

Where guns are banned, only outlaws have guns, besides the government.

Mexico has a real problem with drug lords who wield a lot of power because they know the value of guns for protection.

We saw in Nazi Germany what happens when guns are banned to law abiding citizens. They are taken prisoner and shown no mercy.

Jon Hammer came close to dying at the hands of his jailors. Someone powerful intervened on his behalf or someone paid the ransom price.

Jon Hammer may or may not talk about his entire ordeal publicly. Telling the truth about governmental abuses has consequences.

Loved it Hobnob :-)

I'm so happy they released young Mr. Hammer but I'm frustrated and embarrassed that nothing was done sooner to free an innocent man who was only trying to deal with the aftermath of serving our country. I wish him all the best. I hope he can forgive us.
How can we improve relations with or neighbors? AT this point I'm not sure I would accept a free trip to Mexico.

RE: The Apocalypse ordered for 12/21/12

Dear Earth.

Thank you for your email in relation to your ordered Apocalypse, (The super duper, big bang obliterater)

I have checked our records and note your ordered apocalyse was in fact delivered early.

I also see you checked the express delivery option which our delivery company Wrath of the Gods! excel at.

It appears that on the day of delivery you were out so our delivery company Wrath of the Gods! left it with a neighbor.
The neighbor it was left at was planet #5 of your solar system and was signed for by a Mr. Jove, delivered July 16 1994.

Due to the size of your order, we had to send it in several packages, all of which were delivered to planet #5.

Our records show all packages were signed for and also that local CCTV cameras also recorded delivery of your order.

I suggest contacting planet #5 and asking for your packages.

I am not sure what other advice i can offer you since we fulfilled your order and left it with a neighbor when there was no reply, a neighbor who signed for receipt of your packages.

Normally we get complaints when delivery of an apocalypse is late, you are the first person to complain about an early delivery.

Wrath of the Gods! are pretty good when it comes to express delivery, so, next time you order an apocalypse for a certain period perhaps it will suit you to not check the express delivery option.

We look forward to doing further business with you.

Have a nice day
