TEST: Analysis of Victim Statement Part One

This is part one of two parts.  Part Two up tomorrow morning.

A woman was attacked and when asked about it gave the following statement:

It was the most painful thing ever. My heart stopped. It ripped
through my clothing the instant it touched my shirt. I could feel it
burning through my second layer of skin. I have never, ever seen
this girl in my entire life. When I first saw her, she had this
weirdness about her — like jealousy, rage.”

What do you make of this statement?

Put your analysis in the comments section.

In part two, I will reveal analysis and conclusion.

If you recognize the case, please don't identify it.

Emotions in the appropriate places.

"This Girl"

Do I detect deception? Indeed.

Most Sincerely,
Meag

It's not in chronological order, as it would be if it were true. Before the knife (presumably) has even entered the narrative, it's already 'the most painful thing ever.' Only then does the victim mention it cutting through their clothes (my heart stopped = dramatizing), and then he/she could 'feel' it burning through the second layer (wtf?) of their skin.

Emotions in the perfect/logical place.

To quote Peter:

In story telling, we often find emotions in the Main Event (II) because it makes for good story telling. "I was walking in the dark and felt a tingling of fear when suddenly..."
In truthful accounts, the subject will often simply report what happened, but afterwards, describe what he felt. When we encounter emotions in the Main Event (II) we must ask if the emotion has been placed there artificially by the subject, in order to persuade. We do not conclude deception on any one single indicator, but we do take this into consideration.

*" My heart stopped" - story telling.
*" I could feel it burning through my second layer of skin." - I'm not a dermatologist but can one distinguish a burn from the different layers of skin? Any burns I've had (small) it just hurts like heck.
*" I have never, ever seen this girl in my entire life"-said in negative. This girl: closeness.
* "When I first saw her, she had this weirdness about her — like jealousy, rage.” - story telling.

With this statement: " I have never, ever seen this girl in my entire life" -said in negative and also revealing closeness. Has seen "this girl" before. This part of the statement with the rest of the statement : I would have to say sensitivity indicated, most likely: deception.

”It was the most painful thing ever. My heart stopped. It ripped

burning through my second layer of skin. ** This sounds like someone threw acid on her chest. I don't believe she could differentiate her second layer of skin. Dramatic statement.

I have never, ever seen
this girl in my entire life. *** Reporting in the negative. Extra words, trying to convince.

When I first saw her, she had this
weirdness about her — like jealousy, rage.” *** This is out of order. She reported in the sentence above that she had never seen the girl. Now she states when she "first" saw her. Her descriptions don't ring true - weirdness, jealousy, rage. She is making this up.

Deception noted.

the person is lying. everything is out of order. and there are some details that she would not have taken note of if it was real. if it all was true her statement would go something like this: I saw this woman approach me, she looked weird - like a jealous rage was in her is the best way I can describe it, but i had never seen her before - she was a stranger. And the next moment my skin was burning - deep into my skin, it was the most painful thing i have ever experienced, I thought my heart stopped.

The subject's exaggeration throughout is unexpected. No need to exaggerate a "most" "painful assault" "ever" with "heart stopped" and "second(?) layer of skin"..."second" - second(degree burns?) - not a knife attack? (ripped through clothes)... I think I just guessed the case...

Subject is sensitive about: "this girl" "never ever...in my life" been "seen" by subject.

Exaggeration is a form of deception. It may be fun in jest at a family and friends social gathering however, unexpected and inappropriate for reporting a crime/personal attack.

Subject never ever, then contradicts with:
"when I first saw her", She forms an opinion (another vibe report?) about the "weirdness" "like" "jealousy, rage" character traits "about" her.

You can not see "jealousy". You can see acts as a result of someone who has jealousy, perhaps. Rage is similar. Subject would have to know the person to an extent to form such an opinion: "Jealousy, rage". To add "like" before "jealousy, rage", weakens it further.

I believe the statement is deceptive and the language attempts to persuade, not inform.

I'm sorry, should be "most" ("painful") "thing" "ever"

"thing" - weakens/minimizes event (attack)

Not a knife I think. Although she used the word "ripped," why describe 1st and 2nd skin layers unless she was attacked by a severe paper cut?

"This" indicates closeness. Perhaps she didn't know her personally but had a clue to who she might be.

"Weirdness" I get from a stranger. Jealousy? No. Why would a stranger be jealous? Rage maybe from a person who feels slighted, cut off in traffic, someone who has just stolen her boyfrined (then maybe jealousy).

My overall impression on the first reading was that the woman liked being attacked. I asked myself why i got that impression and see it is because she told so much about how it felt rather than what happened.

By using the pronoun "it", the woman blames the instrument rather a person wielding the instrument. I have to ask why she won't place blame on who held the instrument ...was it herself?

The woman finally mentions "this girl", this is close. She is mentioned in the negative with too many qualifiers to be a reliable statement. Then she said "first". Second or more usually follows first.

"...this weirdness about her - like jealousy, rage."
"This" is close
She is assigning personality traits to someone who she only saw once and who attacked her. (Well, she never said she did.) But anything "like jealousy or rage" is weird to the woman. I would explore if she has ever cut her self or other any eating disorders in her past.

"... never ever seen this girl in my entire life" sends up red flags and makes me think she knows "this girl".

Wouldn't someone say it like this : "I do not know this person."

Just taking a "wild guess."

Oops -- I mean to say "I do not know this girl".

Peter,

I know you are busy, but I was wondering if you would be able to analyze the JURY's Questions [some of the questions - not all 100] that were given to Jodi Arias on 3/6/13 at the trial ?

Does Statement Analysis work for Questions ?

Jodi is a liar, and this has been proven through statement analysis, and during the trial.

My opinion : I was surprised at some of these Jurors' Questions, and I was wondering IF Statement Analysis can be done on these questions.

I hope and pray it is NOT another Pinellas Jury !

Thank You !

'Never ever' - never would have been enough information on it's own.

'this girl' closeness - she knows the girl or knows of her.

'when I first saw her she had this weirdness about her' - was the attack the first time she saw this girl? She doesn't say, so we don't know.

'..jealousy, rage' she knows or has an idea of the reason for the attack.

The statement is over dramatised, so I would wonder why.

Questions can be analyzed. Do you have specifics you want to post?

I have never, ever seen
this girl in my entire life.

"never, ever" makes seeing this girl sensitive.

"entire" life sensitive

She tells us that she never, ever saw this girl.

Therefore her attacker doesn't exist. Another poster pointed out her connection to the attack as if she liked it, she attacked herself and is garnishing sympathy.

THANK YOU, Peter !

I will post some of the questions shortly !

MizzMarple said...

Peter,

Here are some of the questions that concern me -- because IMO, the Prosecutor has clearly proven pre-meditation and that Arias is a "serial" liar.

I also believe that the "sexual issues" that were brought into this trial by the defense were inappropriate as well as irrelevant. I also believe that the issue of religion had no place in this trial as well.

So, why would the jurors waste time on questions that have no relevance to pre-meditated murder ? I understand defendants are entitled to a defense but the sexual abuse claim that has been alleged has been proven as false.

Questions :

5) why would you continue to sleep with Travis after you learned of his child porn issues?

6) why didn't you just change your gmail password so Travis could not get into it anymore?

8) did you ever record other phone sex conversations?

10) why did you feel so uncomfortable about anal sex with Travis when you had previously tried it?

11) you took pictures of the shirt and shorts. Did you take pictures of the Spider-Man underwear? If no, why not?

21) who initiated contact after the various breakups: Bobby, Matt, Darryl and Travis. start with Bobby.

These are just some which I feel are irrelevant.

THANK YOU !

Some more ?s :

25) what is your relationship w your father like today?

75) in all of the three hour church sessions, family home evenings, missionary discussions and other church events, you were never told or under the impression that other forms of intercourse, anal or oral, were forbidden?

80) what is your understanding of the word "skank"?

81) why did you share housing with Matt at the time you were in a relationship w Travis?

82) were there any girls living there that you could've roomed with?

83) how could you be a sister to Matt, a man you'd had sex with in the past?

84) why didn't you read the Book of Mormon to see what you were and weren't allowed to do?

I greatly appreciate it !

"I have never, ever seen this girl"--sensitive

I read up on this girl. She claims to have body dysmorphic disorder and through seeing a therapist feels better about herself. I haven't analyzed those statements (original, not my paraphrasing) but I would bet she is lying. I bet she has Munchausen's. Before, when she was pretty, she supposedly had bdd. She may have had it. But she clearly feeds off of the attention she gets, drawing attention back to herself yet again with her clear prosthetic facial pressure mask straight out of Vanilla Sky. This girl loves attention and is thankful to get it, and more of it she will if her book is picked up by a publisher as she hopes. Incidentally, she recently came forward after 2-3 years, now, in Feb. The recovery from her bdd is so timely, maybe she can serve as inspiration to Naomi and other soon to conveniently be diagnosed folks with sympathetic disorders of body image rather than narcissistic ones like Munchausen's--like the authentic support Katie Piper does for real victims.

Maybe she did some research before-hand because my (IMHO) understanding is that 1st degree burns hurt (like spilling boiling water on yourself- they turn red, but don't open the skin). 2nd degree burns would also hurt because the nerves are located in the second layer and would relay the pain to the brain until they were beyond repair. By the 3rd skin layer, there should be no more nerves in the skin left to feel pain, therefore no more pain would be felt in a 3rd degree burn site itself (although edges may still be 2nd degree and still hurt).
