Statement Analysis: President Obama On Manhood

This portion of a speech was delivered to the graduates of Morehouse College on May 19, 2013 in which the President speaks about manhood, his wife and daughters.  He spoke to a black college of male only students.  He said he wanted to “transform the way we think about manhood,

to "transform" is to change.  One would need to know the way "we think" about manhood(the subject's reference point)  in order to know what it is being changed.  Note that it is not what the subject thinks, but what "we" think. This indicates the subject includes his thinking with that of the audience at Morehouse College.

Delivering a commencement address at the all-male private liberal arts college in Atlanta, Obama spoke in deeply personal terms about the “special obligation” he feels as a black man to help those left behind.

There but for the grace of God, I might be in their shoes,” Obama said. “I might have been in prison. I might have been unemployed. I might not have been able to support a family — and that motivates me.”

Note the order:
1.  Prison
2.  Unemployed
3.  Unable to support a family

Note that these three things motivate the President of the United States.

The president also reflected on the absence of his father growing up, noting that he was raised by a “heroic single mother,” and urged the young graduates not to shrink from their family responsibilities.

My whole life, I’ve tried to be for Michelle and my girls what my father wasn’t for my mother and me. I want to break that cycle — where a father’s not at home, where a father’s not helping to raise that son and daughter. I want to be a better father, a better husband, a better man.”

"My whole life" does not include any dating of time prior to marriage.  This skips over a great deal of time, from childhood until marriage.  This period of life skipped over is the formative years and have been controversial in the debates over the subject's biography.  He does not consider the two + decades preceding marriage as part of his "whole life."

Please note the use of the pronoun "I" as strong.
Note also that the word "tried" in the past tense is an indication of attempt and failure.  Does the context of this statement support this?

Note the verb, "want" is in the present tense, indicating that he has not been for Michelle and his girls what he intends to be.
He "wants" to break the cycle, which he has not.
Note "that" is distancing language.  He wants to break, present tense, "that" (distance) cycle. This is for the future.

He wants to be a better:
a.  father
b.  husband
c.  man

Order indicates priority.

Tory Peer Denies Calling Activists 'Loons'

Lord Feldman, co-chair of the party, denies he called grassroots activists "swivel-eyed loons" as rumours swirl.

Snipped..

Lord Feldman, a friend of Mr Cameron's from Oxford University, released an angry statement to scotch speculation he was involved.

"There is speculation on the internet and on Twitter that the senior Conservative Party figure claimed to have made derogatory comments by the Times and the Telegraph is me.

"This is completely untrue. I would like to make it quite clear that I did not nor have ever described our associations in this way or in any similar manner, nor do these alleged comments represent my view of our activists.

"On the contrary in the last eight years of working for the party, I have found them to be hard working, committed and reasonable people. They are without question the backbone of the party.

"I am very disappointed by the behaviour of the journalists involved, who have allowed rumour and innuendo to take hold by not putting these allegations to me before publication. I am taking legal advice."

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister supports Lord Feldman's position. It is categorically untrue that anyone in Downing Street made the comments about the Conservative Party Associations and activists reported in the Times and the Telegraph."

You're a fucking piece of shit idiot if you think the BLACK President telling BLACK males to stop being deadbeat gangbang druggies and raise their kids translates to the President fretting over his own inadequacy as a man.

The BLACK Senator risqued LOSING the democratic nomination by telling BLACK ghetto trash to stop being ghetto trash and raise their kids.

Billy Cosby's reputation was DESTROYED when he delivered at the NAACP a speech criticizing ALL Black people for Black ghettos and Black poverty, and Cosby was trashed by Blacks nonstop when he went on a lecture tour talking about how BLACKS were basically lazy racist scum who needed to get responsible and stop blaming Whitey for Black problems.

You're a racist piece of shit who loves trashing Black people.........and you're now trashing Black people who trash Black people......you fucking stupid idiot.

President Obama's "we" is appropriate for this speech. His understands that his reference point is the same as many of the graduates...they were raised by single mothers and experienced absent fathers.

He is saying it is time to change their own reference points where they found it natural and okay to have an absent father.

The key phrase here is, "I might be in their shoes."

Note the "THEIR."

One in three black men end up in prison in THEIR lifetime.

The unemployment rate for blacks is almost double than that for whites.

When a man is in prison or unemployed, he does not support his family.

President Obama gives the odds in this part of his speech...and the odds say as a black man he could have ended up in prison, unemployed, and unable to support his family.

Sus said...

I agree with your analysis, that President Obama seems to see his life beginning at his marriage, and distances himself from his childhood.

I do not find this nefarious, especially when he is giving a speech on being raised without a father. It supports what others have been saying for years now...the black community is being decimated by fathers abandoning their children. President Obama is a living, breathing, hurting example.

By the "trying" statement, President Obama shows that he is not able to be the father he wants to be, but hopes to be someday. Michelle has said she feels like a single mother. Jeeze ...he is president of the United States. He has a few pressing matters to attend to.

Anonymous said...

Interesting that Obama lists being a better man as #3. If this is the least in his order of importance, it may confirm what Larry Sinclair told the world. Funny that in April of 2012 a federal judge dismissed a libel case against Larry Sinclair, a gay man that openly claimed he had sex with Obama. Obama’s #3 on his list goes to confirm why when a basketball star comes out of the closet, he is proud of it. I believe, Obama is gay and he feels he can’t come out of the closet.

So with this knowledge in hand, his statement, “My whole life, “I’ve tried to be for Michelle and my girls what my father wasn’t for my mother and me. I want to break that cycle – where a father’s not at home, where a father’s not helping to raise that son and daughter. I want to be a better father, a better husband, a better man. – it makes a whole lotta sense.

Accordingly to the article he likes older white men. Link:

Just sayin…

The President's pot smoking past has been well documented through his own admission.
what if the young, stoned Obama, instead of turning left one morning, turned right, reeking of pot, into the path of a policeman ? If he was in New York City he would have more than likely been arrested. What would have become of his political aspirations?
I think the amount of money spent on arresting and housing pot smokers could be better spent on helping drug addicts through education rather than incarceration.
I think I will stop there before I am accused of being racist.

Once again, all Peter had to do is reprint an article about something Obama did and he gets attacked for being racist. People, if you disagree with something written, give us an articulate response with what you disagreed with and why. Profanity is the refuge of the stupid.

I appreciate Obama's desire to encourage black men to rise to a higher level. It is a rare thing in the black community.

The order of his statements (prison, unemployed, unable to support a family) reflect the fact that black men are imprisoned at the highest rate of any ethnic group.

I find it somewhat racist, though, that he assumes that all black men, including himself, have the same views on manhood. This is obviously not true.

The idea that "there but for the grace of God" may have a general, broad application to any of us, but I highly doubt Obama was ever at risk of ending up in the demographic he is referring to. In making a reference like that, he furthers the idea that it is only the black person's skin color that is responsible for their ending up in prison, etc, and not the way they are raised/their cultural beliefs, values and habits that are transmitted from one generation to the next. I believe this kind of reasoning is what keeps some of the black community stuck in that demographic. But I also believe he made an effort in that direction, at least, by making this speech.

The referring to the years of his marriage as "his whole life" is an interesting statement. Maybe he feels his real life began after his marriage.

The word "tried" indicates trying but not succeeding. This is an interesting reference when coupled with Michelle Obama recently referring to herself as a "single mom." The president feels it is important for a husband to be there for his wife, a father to be there for his kids ("I want"), but as president of the United States, he obviously does not have the ability to do that. His duties as president are no doubt too demanding to spend the kind of time and attention on one's own family that would be ideal.

Sus said...

Anon 10:48 went for the bait, Peter. I'm surprised that you wrote a lovely post on being a father the other day, then hinted that President Obama puts father before husband and man.

I shouldn't be surprised at the right-wing tactic. They have spent years demonizing Democrats as soft, feminine, and non-manly. It played well before the demographics changed.

Now Democrats are winning elections because toughness and posturing are out of vogue with the majority of voters. We like PERSONS who are fathers, who are in touch with their feminine side, who want peace rather than war, who know how to compromise, and stand up for the less fortunate.

President Obama put "man" last on his priority list. Perfect! Obviously the voters wanted someone who doesn't worry about proving he is a man.

Charlotte from Denmark; I don't believe there are separate black and white colleges any longer. There are many blacks who deliberately separate themselves by their own choices (private schools, day care services) and it would appear they are being segregated against when they aren't, they've just chosen to go on their on. I don't blame them.

I was the first white student to attend an all black college in 1966; the Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, Fl. My husband (white) was a professor there; the first white professor on a black campus. We broke the barrier, also lived in all-black campus housing. We had many troubles with certain whites in the community but we survived it and became better people for it.

Segregation is still alive and well, but it is carried out in other ways, (this article for example); also in some legal circles, housing, redlining, steering, failure to hire in the home and in small businesses, but this also pertains to certain other segments of society and not just blacks. ""why does this person not tend to the business of being President of The United States""

That is exactly what he is doing when he tells deadbeat fathers to raise their children........

Do you want the govournment raising children of deadbeat fathers or do you want deadbeat fathers to get their heads out of their asses and take responsibility for their children?

You want welfare eliminated and the govournment to butt out of everything...then you bitch when Obama demands deadbeat fathers take responsibility raising their children which would reduce welfare and reduce govournment meddling

I feel President Obama has lived up to many of his promises-- more so than many of our past Presidents, historically have, and under far worse conditions and blockage than most of our previous presidents have had to endure.

He campaigned on "hope and change"-- and he has accomplished both, despite the daily abuse and obstruction from the GOP congress, that started just a week after he was first inaugurated in '09, by design.

President Obama gave us hope, by:

1-Stopping the Great financial Crash that was in free fall--
2-Ending the Great Recession, and
3-Saving us from the complete devastation of a full out Great Depression, like the 12 year one that followed the crash of '29.

4-He promised to end the Iraq War, and he did.

5-He promised to put universal healthcare through, and he did.

6-He promised to help women and he did-- by signing the Lily Ledbetter Act, shortly after he took office, and other initiatives.

7-He promised to help students and education, and he has, with bills that help more students go to college and other initiatives.

8-He promised to help the middle class-- and one of the first things he did was to put extra money in their pockets and tax breaks for them, and other initiatives since-- consistently fighting for the middle class, even now.

9-He promised to help small businesses, and he did-- giving small business tax breaks and other financial incentive/ support.

10-He promised to help our auto industry-- and save jobs--and he did-- the industry, on the brink of failure, was saved, and saved and created thousands of jobs for Americans in a bad economy, and preserved an American big business institution and legacy.

11- He promised to insource-- to try and correct the detrimental abuse of sending American jobs over seas-- and he started that initiative with jumpstarting manufacturing and jobs here, while the GOP fought all his efforts every step of the way-- Including his JOBS bills the President presented.

12-He promised to help American working people-- and he did-- by supporting teachers, unions, firemen, policemen etc. and unemployment benefit extension bills.

13-He promised and tried repeatedly, to get roads and bridges fixed, that also created jobs-- while the GOP Congress blocked it.

14-He promised to improve immigration and did, with supporting the Dream act-- that the GOP fought against-- and other things.

15-He promised to focus on alternative fuels to start weaning us off of oil-- and he did, and is still working towards it.

16-He promised to do this, while improving oil initiatives here on American soil, and he did. President Obama had more oil rigs going in his first term-- than under any other President in history.

17-He promised to restore America's reputation in the world-- that had been damaged by Bush's 8 years, and he did.

18-Having worked diplomatically around the world, his proof was the Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to him, for his efforts.

19- He promised to keep us safe--and so far he has...with a dutiful campaign taking enemies off the field--and the list goes on....

20- Oh, and he promised to get OBL-- America's #1 enemy--something Bush promised and failed at-- but President Obama DID.

Pres. Obama promised "hope and change"-- and we've been getting it-- DESPITE the vile GOP obstructionists in his way from day one. And even though the obstinate GOP with their TREASONOUS agenda REFUSED REPEATEDLY to give him the satisfaction of fulfilling his "unity" promise in Washington-- President Obama's RE-ELECTION has proven America is waking up to "unifying" with him-- and his adult common sense approach....

and AGAINST the GOP congress extremist WACKOS.

So, better late than never-- the "UNITY" promise is coming together as well-- DESPITE the GOP'S DEVIL work.

In fact-- the GOP's disruptive, horrible behavior has spurred Americans to unify as a country, WITH their President.

Thanks Sue for doing an actual analysis.
I'd have to say maybe he feels, personally, that "My whole life..." began with his immediate family (Michelle and the kids).
"I've tried..." could be used because a father/husband is ongoing, it's not past tense. Yes, it indicates that he is not a perfect father, because who is?
"I want to break that cycle..." again he uses the present tense because that is an ongoing goal, he can't say that he was broken that cycle until his girls are all grown up, only then can he say if he had actually broken that cycle.
He's a father who is not at home, not because he is intentionally absent like his father was, but because he travels a lot as the president. Maybe his children really miss him and he feels some sort of guilt?
"I want to be a better..." Again, it's present tense, he can't say he has been better at all three until the day he dies. As humans we are always bettering ourselves, always a work in progress.

“There but for the grace of God, I might be in their shoes"

'I might be in their shoes'

Interesting, anybody see what I am seeing in this statement?

The way thing are going for him now, he might indeed be in their shoes. I see this as an embedded statement, and a possible admission of guilt. Or an admission he sees as pending, future prosecution of himself.

It truly is by the grace of God that all his deception has not been challenged earlier and that he has not been put in jail for all his illegal activity as president.

Hate speech? He is only one I hear making hate speeches, meant to provoke resentful liberals into hateful and vengeful acts against their fellow Americans. He encourages this! That is terrorism! He is terrorizing the press, tea partiers and patriots, Christians, lawful gun owners, and he is terrorizing the military and government employees.

Anonymous said...

Oh boy. You can't cut the president any slack huh Peter.
I agree with some of the things you pointed out, but, Obama has broken the cycle. While he was abandoned by his father and certainly could have ended up in prison, etc. he is now the president of the United States. He is supporting his children and they live in the White House. Can't you give him a little credit? His is a success story. I don't know how you can not see that. His mother was heroic, in that she raised a black child (who also became president) in a time when racism was fairly rampant. She also got up at 4 AM to do extra homework with him, apparently quite dedicated to seeing that he have opportunities in life. I think you should lighten up on him.

Anonymous said...

You people don't have to like him. But to say he hasn't broken the cycle of black men abandoned by their fathers going astray is hilarious! He is the president of the United States! Keep reaching! Something tells me he doesn't have to defend himself about the speech he gave. He is the President of the United States, raised by a single (white) mother with no father anywhere in the picture. And yes, he still managed to become President of the United States. Jealous much people? A SINGLE mother raised the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! All this thread is is sour grapes.

Anonymous said...

It reminds me of that saying "He who laughs last, laughs best." Obama's father abandoned him and that probably made him feel like he was nothing, but now, if he ever read this thread, he would laugh. Why? Because he doesn't have to care anymore about small-minded people trying to diminish him. Why? Because he's the president of the United States! LOL!

Republican Bush orchestrating overthrow of Mubarak, leading to ISLAMIC TERRORISTS WHO WANT TO WIPE ISRAEL AND JEWRY OFF THE MAP taking control of Egypt

It does, Wikileaks has [US] state department cables proving that for the last few years the US government has been backing oppositional movements in Egypt for several years, and has been discussing who to groom to replace Mubarak.

The United States has been covertly preparing a regime change in Egypt for the last two years secretly assisting the leaders who were preparing a blueprint to bring representative government to Egypt now emerged as leaders or organizers of the mass uprising that the world is witnessing today.

The US State Department officials, US Congressmen and their immediate staff were engaged in having discussions with the Egyptian rebel leaders on US soil. The US embassy in Cairo was instrumental in organizing a summit in New York in 2008 to meet one of the young Egyptian activists. On his return to Cairo this activist was detained by the Egyptian intelligence unit.

All these and more are now revealed in a classified diplomatic cable sent from the American embassy in Cairo to Washington, dated 30 December 2008 disclosed by WikiLeaks which the Asian Tribune will place before its readers.

This young Egyptian activist was arrested and detained in this week’s uprising in Cairo, it has been revealed.

The name of this young Egyptian leader is withheld for obvious reasons. The WikiLeaks released Cairo US embassy cable is very clear that the United States government was overtly supporting the Mubarak regime, while covertly endeavoring to undermine it and replace it with a representative government.

Sensing some eruption in the future against the autocratic Mubarak regime and to safeguard U.S. interests in the region, the U.S. was forced, in the interest of its national security, to find an alternative, this diplomatic cable very clearly depicts the grand design of the super power.

A plan concocted by the Egyptian dissident groups to remove Hosni Mubarak from power before the scheduled September 2011 presidential election and replace his rule with a representative democratic government was relayed to Washington through the embassy in Cairo.

Margaret Scobey, the US Ambassador in Cairo, said in the memo to the US Secretary of State, in that she questioned the likelihood that such an action would happen.

Other cables revealed, however, the US diplomats had sought out the opposition groups, one of whose members attended a youth summit in Washington organized by the State Department.

I can't wait until Obama is out of office. His dirty politics have no place in America. Dirty politics equal dirty ends.

@ Trixiebelle

I am tired of people making excuses for Obama simply because he is black. I understand that being black in America makes your life harder, but is it good to use skin color as an excuse for poor character? Can he really do anything he wants to do simply because he is black Without his character ever coming under scrutiny? Can he write a blank check and get unlimited credit based on his skin color and not on a credit check? If people don't give him that blank check because they don't trust him based on his record, are you really going to dismiss their criticsim and distrust as being based on his skin color? He is a deceptive man hiding behind the immunity of his skin color. I don't think that does much to advance the cause of young black men, nor will it make them better 'fathers, husbands or men.'

"Hiding behind his skin color"? He's trying to write blank checks bc of his skin color too? Did you read, anon? Obama said being Black doesn't excuse these things, going to prison is not an excuse. Are you reading and comprehending or issuing mindless prattle of your usual rhetoric against blacks and your perceived notion of their usual excuse?

No anon 11:56, he did not say that, you are interpreting, this is what he said:

“There but for the grace of God, I might be in their shoes"

“I might have been in prison. I might have been unemployed. I might not have been able to support a family — and that motivates me.”

“My whole life, I’ve tried to be for Michelle and my girls what my father wasn’t for my mother and me. I want to break that cycle — where a father’s not at home, where a father’s not helping to raise that son and daughter. I want to be a better father, a better husband, a better man.”

Where in that do you find "Obama said being Black doesn't excuse these things, going to prison is not an excuse."

Practice your SA skills and tell me.

That is a problem for Obama supporters, they do a lot of interpreting for him, and he counts on that, he counts on you hearing what you want to hear. He is a button pusher, a manipulator, and a deceiver, a lawyer who bastardizes words, and he's got your number. He knows all of your buried grievances, your hidden hatred, your sentimental yearnings, and your paralyzing impotence, and he stirs it up, brings it to the surface, justifies it for you so you feel entitled to indulge it, he bites you on the heels like the serpent, and then he encourages you to let loose on those others for your misery. He encourages and then appeals to the very lowest form of reasoning in man...

...creating a bunch of Frankensteins, a frightening and dangerous mob of blamers who don't want to take responsibility for their own virtue, and their own happiness. A bunch if idiots who are constantly peering over into their neighbors yards, spying on them, and never looking in their own yard or at themselves.

The speaker is dead, the statement is alive.

If he wants to be a better man, he could try telling the truth to the American people for a change. That's change I will hope for.

Obama is half 'white' you looney toons. Raised by 'whites' and dated 'white' women before Michelle. He has very little in common with your average 'black' man. First 'black' President, I don't think so. I thought that honor went to Bill Clinton?

Mark Twain wrote, of all the animals, humans are the only one's that are cruel. They inflict pain for the pleasure of causing pain. In the mean time, please don't suffer a heart attack while waiting for Obama to leave office. Remember, God loves you and so do I.

p.s. I urge you to write the president and inform him how you feel. I promise, you will feel better once you lift this heavy burden from your heart. Have a blessed Day, In Jesus name, Amen

Legions mock Him because His herd has gone astray. If a shepherd cannot properly guide his sheep, then he is no shepherd at all. His sheep are lower than feral dogs.
