BANGOR, Maine — An Auburn woman charged with murder in connection with the death of her child drugged her 2½-year-old daughter, put duct tape on the girl’s face and then suffocated her before attempting suicide, according to a court document released Friday.
Superior Court Justice Ann Murray on Friday unsealed search warrant affidavits in the case against Leanna Norris, 24, of Auburn and formerly of Stetson, who was charged July 3 with murder in the death of her daughter, Loh Melody Grenda. Norris entered a not guilty plea July 5 at the Penobscot Judicial Center.
Investigators have released few details about the toddler’s death except to say she died in Newport on June 23 and was found early the next morning in a car in Stetson. The search warrant affidavits contain police accounts of interviews with Norris and others during the investigation. The search warrants issued were for Norris’s car and her cellphone.
Leanna Norris drove her daughter to Durham Bridge Road in Newport at about 8:45 p.m. June 23 and gave her “two or three syringes of Benadryl to make her go to sleep,” the affidavit written by Detective Thomas Pickering of the Maine State Police states. Benadryl is an antihistamine that can be used as a sleep aid, according to WebMD.
“Leanna Norris put black Gorilla [duct] tape on Loh Grenda’s mouth and nose; that Leanna Norris put a blanket over Loh Grenda’s face so she would not have to look at Loh’s eyes,” the affidavit states. “Leanna Norris said that she killed Loh Grenda; that Leanna Norris put her hand over Loh Grenda’s face and suffocated her.”
She then removed the duct tape from her daughter’s face, “so it would not look so horrible,” according to the document.
Norris then drove to a cemetery in Stetson “where she took pills and put tape on her face in order to kill herself,” the affidavit states.
The pills were from a bottle of Advil, Norris later told her mother, according to the affidavit.
Norris fell asleep but awoke and vomited and then called her father at about 2:50 a.m. June 24 from the cemetery.
“Leanna told him that she killed her baby and she wanted to die,” the court documents state.
A few minutes later she pulled into her parent’s Pleasant Road driveway in Stetson, and her father found his granddaughter’s body in the front seat bundled in a blanket.
“[He] checked Loh Grenda and felt that she was cold,” Pickering’s affidavit states.
He got his daughter out of the car, and she was “begging for a gun to commit suicide,” the court document states. Norris’s father then called 911.
Pickering wrote in his reports that he got the call to respond at about 4:10 a.m. and arrived at the scene at about 5:25 a.m.
Police found Grenda’s body laying on her side in the front seat and there was a note left on the dashboard, the affidavit states. Police have not released what the note said.
Martha J. Harris of Bangor, Norris’s court appointed attorney, filed the motion to seal the search warrant affidavits on Tuesday. Murray announced her decision to unseal them at a hearing at the Penobscot Judicial Center.
Harris argued that her client could not get a fair trial if the documents were released, but Murray assured her that the jury selected would be fair and impartial.
Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson, who said on Wednesday that investigators conducted two searches on June 24 and June 27, told Murray Friday that the state was not taking a position on the motion to seal the documents.
Benson said only that he understands Harris’ point of view and also recognizes the presumed public right of access, especially for the press.
Murray said Friday morning that the reasons cited by Harris were not strong enough to seal the two search warrant affidavits.
Benson said Friday he could not talk about what police found during the searches.
After the child’s body was discovered, Norris was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center and later to a medical facility in Rockport where she received treatment until her arrest on July 3.
Norris, who went to Central High School in Corinth and graduated in 2007, according to her Facebook page, was secretly indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury in June, so no probable cause affidavit has been filed stating why she was arrested.

There is adoption. Why do these girls keep their babies, only to either kill them or let dangerous men into their lives .. at which point the kids are abused/beaten and in some instances, "secreted".

A baby is a gift. If, for whatever reason, the gift is a burden, then let [it] go. Make a childless couple's life and allow them to love and nurture what [you] don't "want".

Alternatively, here's a thought. If you want to off yourself, leave the innocent baby out of your eff'd up plan and let them live their life free of your emotional turmoil/soap opera drama, whatever.

Goddamn these stories.

I just read this story today. If you find a picture of the little girl, she was beautiful. Too many questions pop into my head with something like this. First, how can you physically take your own child's life? How can you cause their death? Watch/feel their life leave this earth? Secondly, what is SO bad that you feel the need to kill and take your own life? Life is all about ups and downs. I will never understand how a mother could end the life of their own child. I can try to understand it but I can't believe that in that actual moment nothing makes you change your mind.

So very sad. I found this obituary for Loh Melody and the word "unexpectedly" in regard to her death, really fries me. Maybe it was "unexpected" that her own mother would kill her, but it certainly wasn't "unexpected" that the baby would die when her mother suffocated her!

Advil? Oh brother! Asking for a gun?
What a crock of crap, if she wanted to kill herself, she wouldn't take Advil then drive to her parents house, where she knew she would get help.
Just another baby killer, thinking all about themselves, just another case where we will probably find out others knew the mother was troubled.
The whole story just pisses me off.
(sorry for the language, kind of)

When speaking of ones own children the norm is to speak in the first person singular.( I want my son/Daughter to come home safe)Here we see Allanas father using the plural "WE",we would expect him to take ownership of Allana.(I urge anyone with information about MY daughter Allana to come forward). Why the distancing language?

"WE thank the Saginaw police, the FBI and any other agencies for their hard work on this".

When people thank LE and other agencies early on in an investigation, this can be a red flag..

http://www.actionnewsjax.com/mostpopular/story/Murdered-babys-father-in-jail-on-unrelated-charge/5mU6-uadKkOD-fSX9avckw.cspx

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The father of Antonio Santiago is in jail on charges of aggravated stalking, according to a warrant obtained by Action News.

Action News first spoke with Louis Santiago and Sherry West after baby Antonio was shot and killed in March.

At the time, they were two grieving parents mourning the loss of a sweet little boy.

But an arrest warrant from June 6 says Louis Santiago was stalking West and is now in jail. Police say Louis Santiago was found standing on her porch, in violation of police orders.

Santiago is charged with Aggravated Stalking. He was convicted of the same charges in another case from 2009.

That 2009 conviction is also cited in a motion filed by lawyers for baby Antonio's accused killer, DeMarquis Elkins. The motion also asks a judge to put the full GBI report from the March shooting on the record.

Elkins is accused of shooting West and killing her baby during a robbery attempt. Another teen, Dominque Lang is also charged in the killing.

The GBI found gun shot residue on both Sherry West and Louis Santiago shortly after the killing.

The fact that West was shot during the robbery attempt could explain why investigators found residue on her.

As for Louis Santiago, the GBI lab report says finding gunshot residue on a person could indicate that they were holding the gun when it was fired, been near a gun that was fired, or came into contact with a surface that has gun shot residue on it.

Police have never named Sherry West or Louis Santiago as suspects in baby Antonio's murder.

Kids used to be raised with responsibilities, chores, caring for siblings, pets or livestock. Without those early lessons that life is a cooperative venture we have "adults" that don't have a clue what it is to take care of themselves, let alone another living being. The demands and sacrifices of pet ownership is beyond their imagination or ability, let alone parenthood. Handing kids everything their little hearts desire might feel good to the parents, but it sure isn't doing their children any favors. I notice mother ran home to be rescued by her parents.

Finally a case of LE prosecuting a parent who kills their own child. Of course she had to provide the body and a confession for them to actually move on this one. Even I could have solved and brought charges against this mother and I don't have any LE training. So so sad.

Bank Robber Says He Gave Stolen Cash To Poor.

An Australian man charged with robbing a US bank of $140,000 has told a court his actions were justified because he gave much of the money to people made homeless due to bank repossessions.

Corey Donaldson, 39, who is representing himself, told the jury he was using the banks to bailout the poor after becoming homeless himself last year and meeting people on the streets.

In an emotional opening statement Donaldson said: "I MUST SAY, I FEEL LIKE A FRIGHTENED CHILD.

Corey Donaldson
Donaldson is accused of threatening to blow up the bank
"I came up with the idea that since the banks had been bailed out, and the people had not, I was going to CONFISCATE money from US Bank in Jackson, Wyoming, and redistribute it to the poor and homeless in America and that's what I did," he said.

Donaldson, who has lived in the US for 20 years, is accused of claiming explosives were planted around the bank while carrying out the robbery on New Year's Eve.

Jared Thomas Williams, branch manager of the bank, said Donaldson met him in his office on the day of the robbery.

He added that he told him members of a Mexican cartel were outside the building and were prepared to blow it up if Mr Williams did not give him $2m (£1.29m) in cash.

"There were four military-grade explosives that had been buried in the snow, and they were prepared to detonate them," Mr Williams said Donaldson told him.

Mr Williams said he loaded $140,000 (£90,000) - nearly all the cash in the bank - into a duffel bag before giving it to Donaldson.

Donaldson was arrested in Utah after he was identified on surveillance cameras in the bank.

A close friend of his, Kevin Day, had called police after he arrived at his home late one night and told him where to find $8,000 (£5,150).

Mr Day testified that he had been close friends with Donaldson for 16 years, adding he became emotional when he received the money as it came at a good time.

Investigators say they they recovered about $30,000 (£19,309) after Donaldson's arrest. Donaldson told an FBI agent shortly after that he had intended to surrender.

The trial is expected to last a week.

what stands out to me is this Norris then drove to a cemetery in Stetson “where she took pills and put tape on her face in order to kill herself,” the affidavit states.

If this was a serious attempt at suicide one would assume she would have put tape over her nose and mouth to restrict breathing, causing suffocation.

Now, she tells us she fell asleep woke up and vomited.
This is not what happened.
Think about it for a moment.

If she fell asleep with the tape over her nose and mouth then she would be dead, she would have suffocated after a couple of minutes.

We are not told she put the tape over her nose and mouth only that it was on her face, so it is pretty safe to assume this was not a serious attempt at suicide.

The method of murder is reminicent of what happened to Caylee, murdered by her mother.
Is this where she got the idea from?

It is interesting to see she covers Loh with a blanket so she wouldn't have to see her face, it is also a way of undoing the crime.

If she really meant to kill herself why call her family to say what she had done?

This smacks more of setting the scenes, preparing her defence ( insanity, mental health issues or the US version of diminished responsibility.)

I agree that if you can't cope with a baby put it up for adoption or hand it over to a trusted family member or better yet, don't get pregnant in the first place.

I wonder if there had been warning signs before this murder, indications she wasn't coping or she was saying bad things about her baby.

Given Loh's age i don't think PND is a factor unless she never sought help. This would have been building up, this wasn't a spur of the moment thing.
Were CPS involved in any way?
LE?

Re: Alanna Gallgher - first I would say the way she was found: gagged, both hands and feet bound, plastic bag over head taped, wrapped in a tarp with mans belt fastened to keep tarp cover would appear to be punishment of some sort. Gagging suggests saying too much or need to stop from screaming. If it was a random perp where are the clothes? And why just underwear? A perp would not take her away to murder and possibly sexually assualt her and then BRING her back to her own neighborhood to dump in the middle of an intersection. They usually try to hide a body. Police have said it was an isolated case over and over which tells the community it was not random and they are safe. They could ask neighbors what she was wearing that day and if those clothing items are found in the home... well, we have some real concern. We know they had a hot tub. What if she stripped to her underwear to hop in for a warm bath, drowned b/c nobody was watching her and they did the rest to her body to make it look like someone snatched her off the streets and murdered her. Finding her body in only underwear is strange and leads me back to the home. Why would a killer keep her clothing? And if he killed her away from the home, why bring her back, keeping clothing except her undewear. The fact the search warrant lists hot tub water and chemicals that go in it leads to believe her underwear was damp/wet and had the scent of hot tub chemicals. This lead them back to the home. JMO

I live here. It did NOT have anything to do with the case, until HE started talking about it. No one was even asking. He started blabbing about it, like he wanted people to know everything. And, they did not successfully raise children. One, is DEAD. They didn't even report her missing until 2 HOURS after her body was found, at 9 pm. Who the hell doesn't know where there 6 year old is for over 2 hours. 9Since she was actually last seen before her body was even found.) There is a lot of information here, locally. They pretty much let their six year old wander the neighborhood for hours on end. She invited herself over to neighborhood homes, and she cried when she had to leave. This was not a happy girl. The more neighbors are willing to say, the better. These people were not great parents, and still aren't. And, it has nothing to do with their weird sex life. THEY are the ones talking about it, no one else even cares

As far as the Alanna Gallagher case, I once read that someone who had a relationship with the victim would not likely want to leave the victim completely naked. Alanna still had her underwear on. If the killer wanted to keep her clothes as a trophy wouldn't he include the underwear ?

I think the parnots(Alanna's carenoters) treated their kids like animals! The home pictures are mostly of a middle room in their house fenced in with baby gates, the backyard isn't visible through the high surrounding fence; it looks like containment...unexpectedly Alanna was allowed to play on the street where there's a lot of big trucks and driveways every coule of yards...

Anonymous said...

Our justice system got it right. That teenager was prowling around, then proceeded to attack Zimmerman, the same way he attacked a bus driver back in his neck of the woods. He was suspended from school, for smoking weed, his locker had women's jewelry and "burglary" tools which found in his locker. His "mother" couldn't control him and sent him to live with his father, who was too busy to straighten out his out of control teen. His dad didn't know where or what his son was doing, because he was busy with his new girlfriend. In the meantime this out of control and violent thug, felt compelled to confront a man, probably because he smoked a big old blunt that must have caused some major paranoia. Then you have a nasty ass president who injected himself and the whitehouse into this case, compound it with the ridiculous media that ass kisses that nasty ass freak, and you have dumb misinformed Americans.

MISSING CHILD:

Ahlitta North, 6 - Harvey, LOUSIANA

The search continued Saturday night for a missing 6 year old who was last seen in her Harvey home.

Detectives said Ahlitta North disappeared overnight from her parent's apartment in the 2900 block of Destrehan Avenue.

Now, friends and family are praying for her safe return.

“Whoever has her, please bring her back. Because we miss her and we love her,” said North’s aunt, Janice , through tears.

Investigators say North’s mother put her to bed around 11 Friday night. But when her parents awoke at 9 Saturday morning, the front door was ajar and North was gone.

“I hope nobody try to do her any harm because she's just a child,” said North’s uncle, Bernard Barnett.

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s spokesman said there was no sign of forced entry. Family members said North’s blanket, toothbrush, and toothpaste were also gone.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies broke through doors of nearby abandoned apartments in their search for North. They combed the area for hours, using a canine dog and passing out fliers. They also used ATVs to search a wooded area nearby, but have so far turned up nothing.

Family and friends are hoping for the best.

“What I thought was, the kid probably opened the door, unlocked it, went outside, and Destrehan is a busy street. And, bad things went through my mind,” said family friend Joseph Darrell Henderson.

Family members said North just moved back in with her parents last month after staying with her grandmother.

A spokesman for the Sheriff’s office said that the girl’s biological father had been contacted, and that North was not with him.

Family members said North was last seen wearing a gray tank top and pink pajama bottoms. She has shoulder length braided hair.

Anyone with information on the North's whereabouts, or who may have information in her disappearance is asked to contact the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office at 504-364-5300 or Crimestoppers at 822-1111.

6 Year Old Ahlitta North Missing Since in 7/12/13 in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana

Six year old Ahlitta North has been missing since Friday, July 12, 2013 in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Ahlitta North was last seen Friday night at 11 p.m. in her home in the 2900 block of Destrehan Avenue in Harvey just before bed. However, what happened after that is unknown. But around 8:30 Saturday morning, the family discovered the child was missing prompting a search by authorities, friends and family. There were no signs of a forced entry. The stepfather Albert Hill discovered the child missing and the front DOOR unlocked. He had stated that he thought he had locked the DOOR that night, “the DOOR was unlocked, and I know I locked the DOOR, the burglary bars and the regular DOOR.”

Ahilitta_North_missing

“I’ve been walking from DOOR to DOOR, even asking people on the street to spread the word. This child missing is six-years-old. My questions is, she’s six-years-old, how did she get out the house?” said church member Darrel Henderson.

(The DOOR is mentioned 4 times by the stepfather, and twice by the church member Darrel Henderson, making this very sensitive)

“There was no signs of forced entry,” said Col. Johnny Fortunato of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Fortunato said several personal items of the child’s were also missing. Ahlitta has braided shoulder-length hear and was last seen wearing a gray tank top with pink pajama pants.

Oh I can't wait to hear the defense. Casey got away with murder and so will this woman. There is so little accountability in this country.

Shelley said...

What is wrong with these mothers.

This mom may actual have charges since it sounds like rather than claim the child is "missing" she may have owned up to what she did.

But this new case.. Ahlitta North. I am so sick of parents kids "turning up missing in the night" and geting away with murder.

It is happening more and more often and time and again.... they seem to be just walking free.

There needs to be a way they can prove the parents did it.

The one case tho that I think is the most clear and the most surprising no charges were filed was with Justin. They found a large amount of Aylas blood in the home and they said the child could not have survived that. Then add in the brand new life insurance policy..... I think they stand the best chance of prosecuting him. Yet still nothing.

I am losing faith.

Cause to me, it seems that when its an adult and the husband/wife etc calls in the missing person that they are leading fairly often to convictions with out a body. So why is it that with children, we are seeing most of these parents just walk free under really the same circumstances.

Like what was it about about Scott Peterson was so much more clear that he killed his wife vs kidnapping/left on her own than Casey Anthony or Billie Dunn with their child.

And back to Justin with the blood, I have heard a case before where there was blood found under someone seat in their car that was a volume that they felt the person would not have survived and was convicted. I just cant recall the names. But again, no body.

How do these convictions happen but these kids are not getting justice?

Any lawyers reading this that may have some input?

I posted this in the first post about the story. This was taken from an article.

I just found some parts of dads comments that were odd. But then i am still learning SA so was hoping Peter would look at it when I first posted it.

Michael Grenda's Facebook page has a series of posts beginning about 1:30 a.m. and extending through about 11 a.m. Monday, expressing anger and worry because he didn't know where Norris, who had his daughter, was.

He said he had last seen Loh on Sunday afternoon.

At 3:17 a.m. Monday, he wrote "I have absolutely no idea where my daughter is. That is entirely not okay."

Shortly after that, he wrote, "My little girl is my world."

At 10:24 a.m., he wrote that he had been up all night worrying.

"I actually am genuinely concerned as to the whereabouts of my 2 year old," he wrote.

In another post in the same time period, he indicated that he wanted to gain full custody of his daughter.

After no posts for several hours, he posted that he had learned at about 11 a.m. Monday that his daughter's body had been found. McCausland said the investigation has two concurrent phases.

And please, you are not attempting suicide with Pain killers.

The one thing I have learned over time, if a person wants to kill themself, they will.

I have known 2 people that while I did not know them well personally, killed themselves.

One was a co-worker. I had no clue she was depressed or sad. I found out one day she killed herself and was in shock.

The other was the son of a co-worker. She said he spent his life depressed and took medication that never seemed to help. He drove out of town just far enough not to be seen but close enough for the ambulance to arrive in time to save his organs. He called 911, told them he was killing himself. Where his exact location was and to hurry as he is a organ doner and wants to make sure the organs can help/save others. He told them he would wait 5 mins then shoot.

These 2 people wanted to kill themselves. They didnt "attempt" it with advil. One took poisen, the other shot himself.

And not to be cold by any means, but the one that was the organ doner. His mom was told that his eyes, and many other organs saved or helped others. I know he shot himself but I never hear where or how he did it in a maner that so many organs were left to help others.

Either way, both cases were very sad. But "attempted" suicide is not something you hear often. So to use this as an excuse I think is just another crime by the mother to get away with what she did.

And in all honesty, she should have killed herself. It is our job as parents to protect our kids with our lifes. Not take theirs.

Hi Shelley

You are so right..one if my longtime friends struggled with depression for years, he killed himself in 2010 after a failed attempt 10days earlier. (He was found by a family member & rushed to the hospital). He was in the hospital recovering from his deliberate overdose for 10 days, when he was released his parents made him come stay with them. He pretended to be fine & recovered, glad to be alive, while he secretly went to the store and bought rope and items to make an elaborate noose. After his parents went to bed he hung himself from the rafters in their garage. He was 25. While he had struggled with depression since we were teenagers, he never expressed a desire to kill himself...but when he decided he wanted to die...he did it, despite all attempts to save him.

In contrast my mom has a long time friend who threatens to kill herself at least 3x a year. Some of her reasons for wanting to die...she's broke and needs to borrow money, her car is about to be repo'd, and her ex-husband still doesn't want her back after she had gastric bypass surgery to lose weight. You know, the big things.

At first, I thought, "OH! CASEY ANTHONY! Not again!"

Then I read the rest of the story. This woman is beyond messed up, but it appears that she wasn't trying to kill her baby to keep from having the responsibility. She didn't go out and party afterward. She tried to OD and lay down in a cemetery. That is pretty clear. Not that it's good. It's horrible. But, this seems to be the actions of a mentally tormented person, rather than someone who just wanted to play without having her baby around.

The fact that she called her dad and said what she did, and that she was begging to kill herself, says to me that she is tormented beyond that which most of us have ever experienced. I have had a nervous breakdown. This is not the same. This is BAD. I hope this woman gets the emotional and psychiatric help she so desperately needs.

"I actually am genuinely concerned as to the whereabouts of my 2 year old," he wrote.

What's up with that? Does he occasionally feign concern for his daughter?

While the mother's attorney may go for the postpartum depression angle, I don't think it will fly unless she has a documented history of treatment for mental illness following the birth.

People frequently survive suicide attempts. Thank goodness! Many of them don't really want to die. They just want their misery to end. Unfortunately, they sometimes end up with severe liver or kidney damage, brain damage, nerve damage, etc.

This woman is young and possibly ignorant. Maybe she really thought ibuprofen would kill her. There are a few reported cases of death by ibuprofen overdose. Here's a journal article:

David Michael Wood, Jane Monaghan, Peter Streete, Alison Linda Jones, Paul Ivor Dargan,Journal of Critical Care.2006;10(2):R44

In my experience, suicidal people aren't generally rational. Maybe she was worried about her daughter's health and happiness after her suicide, and did something really horrible. We won't know until the trial.

Aside from the fact that her young child is dead, I don't see any similarities between this woman and She Who Shall Not Be Named.

Another creepy ass white cracka. smh

I'm as white and cracka as one can be.

As obnoxious as my more conservative fellow posters may find me, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't find me creepy if I invited them to my home for cocktails. I love a good debate.

So far, I haven't been impressed by the SA crowd, but there are a few of them whom I would really enjoy hanging out with. I am disappointed with myself since there a couple of trolls whom I would love to "bitch slap", but I'm just not that kind of girl.

I'm in therapy now, so it is entirely possible that I will be far less docile than I am currently. Gods help ye!

I wish a bitch would ! said...

Excruciating Headache: That's what you will have if you dare raise your hand to me. Everything else you said, I agree with: White and Cracka. That and more. I'm going to leave it at that, I'm not that kind of girl.

She took the bus regularly. I thought that he would have been arrested for striking her as it sure appeared that way. I always hear about how bad I am rather than the ones who are the perpetrators. Mine have been veterans mostly. and several months before I was actually robbed and threatened in a church in Auburn and the priest rebuffed me totally. No one should receive special treatment. An arrest might have solved the entire problem before it happened.
