Ryan Braun Suspended for the Rest of the Season

July 2013:  Ryan Braun has been suspended from Major League Baseball.

Last year, he was found to have used performance enhancing drugs and issued a statement, which the analysis is found here.

Ryan Braun may win the MVP this year in the majors.  He was originally suspended for using performance enhancing drugs, but won his appeal on a technicality.

Question for Analysis:  Did Ryan Braun use testosterone?

while awaiting the hearing, he said, "This is complete B.S.  I am completely innocent." He told radio announcers that he would "tell my side of the story" at the hearing.   He had this opportunity and may others to say "I didn't take testosterone" or something similar, indicating a reliable denial, but he did not.

Statement Analysis rule:  If the subject cannot bring himself to say he did not do it, we are not permitted to say it for him.

MLB hearing revealed that his attorney argued that the chain of custody was compromised because the sample sat in the fridge over the weekend.  MLB testers testified that it was late on Friday and they did not think Fedex delivered on Saturday, but swore that the sample remained untouched in the fridge.  There was no evidence of tampering.

MLB overruled the suspension.

If I had done this intentionally or unintentionally, I’d be the first one to step up and say I did it,” Braun said. “I truly believe in my heart and I would bet my life, that this substance never entered my body at any point."
Headlines interpreted his denial as "vehement" and "strong" and "emphatically denies", yet Statement Analysis views it differently:

If I had done this intentionally or unintentionally, I’d be the first one to step up and say I did it,”

1.  "If I had..." allows for the possibility.  Innocent people generally do not allow for any other scenario to be examined.  They did not do it, and there is nothing else to be debated.  That he allows for the possibility is noted.

2.  "this"  When there is the word "this" instead of "that", it is indication of closeness.  We expect to hear, "I didn't take testosterone" but the use of the word "this", indicating closeness, goes against innocence.   This is the 2nd red flag for us that is noted.

3.  "I did it" forms the very words of an admission.  This appears to be an embedded admission where a guilty person is able to frame the words of guilt.  An embedded admission is not something an innocent person does unless the person is entering into the language of another, quoting an interviewer or another accuser.  Here, in context, it appears to come from the free editing process.

“truly believe in my heart and I would bet my life, that this substance never entered my body at any point."

Deception indicated.

Instead of saying, "I didn't take testosterone, the subject uses additional language to indicate the need to persuade:

1.  "truly" weakens the assertion, as it calls for emphasis
2.  "believe" weakens the assertion more so;  as it acknowledges that others may "believe" differently
3.  "in my heart" weakens it even further, as  it is only where he believes, in his heart, and not in his head.  Others, in their "hearts" will "believe" differently.  It is also an indication that he "beleives" differently in his head, or intellect.  It is a phrase used when someone wishes to persuade, but even in persuasion we don't see additional qualifiers added.
4.  "would" is conditional tense and a further weakening of an assertion.

In the beginning of a denial, we have four qualifiers used.

"I am happily married" is a straight forward sentence.
"I am very happily married" uses one qualifier.  This is due to either attempt to persuade, or that the subject was previously unhappy, and did not expect to be this happy.

"I am very very happily married" will lead a therapist to inquire about his unhappiness.

"I am very very very very happily married" will lead a divorce attorney to write up a bill.

To qualify 4 times is extreme attempt to persuade.  Ryan Braun qualified his sentence four times to this point, but wasn't done.  He is a poor liar:

that this substance never entered my body at any point."

1  "This" substance, chooses the word "this" bringing him close ("that" shows distancing language) to the testosterone.

2.  "Never" when substituted for the past tense verb, "did not" or "didn't" is unreliable.

3.  "Extra words":

Extra words are those in which a sentence works should they be removed.  They give us additional information.

"at any point" is unnecessary extra words making them "doubly important" for the analyst.  It is interesting to note that not only are these extra words weakening a weak denial, but the word "point" is used.  Testosterone use is, in high dosages, administered via needle.

Analysis Conclusion:

Ryan Braun's test indicated testosterone levels three times higher than the normal limit for athletes.

He does not issue a reliable denial consisting of the simple three elements of First Person Singular "I", past tense verb, "did not" and event specific, "I did not use testosterone", in his statements. He was unable to bring himself to say these words; therefore, we cannot say them for him.  He does not deny using testosterone, instead, he gives a deceptive response that, even though it is a short sentence, has an abundance of red flags.

Deception Indicated.

Ryan Braun used testosterone.

MLB will be forced to consider this should he continue his MVP-like season and come up for voting.

When the appeal was made in his favor on the technicality he said, "The truth prevailed" but did not tell us which truth.  He also avoided saying, "I did not use testosterone"; something an innocent person will say, easily and without qualification.

He did not win because he was truthful and/or did not cheat according to the rules of baseball.

The very very happily married analogy seems odd, but otherwise, great analysis, Peter. I also thought the word "bet" was odd in his statement, too.

Off Topic, anyone care to analyse this?

Just 2 days before the mother of a missing East Toledo toddler is scheduled to appear in court, her ex-boyfriend has also been arrested and charged with obstructing justice in the case.

Steven King was taken into custody on Monday and told reporters, "You guys will see when I'm innocent. That's all I've got to say to you."

When a reporter asked "Where's the baby Steven?", King replied "I don't know obviously. You guys will find out when I'm innocent."

Noooo anon, don't you "dare" say Miggy's name in connection with PED's. I'm already disappointed Jhonny Peralta is implicated. I haven't heard any rumors about Cabrera and if his name came up I'd be crushed. My fav player.

Anonymous said...

You're right Dee, I guess at this point I shouldn't be pointing fingers at Cabrera. The one thing about Miggy is that he's been so consistent over his career, he's probably one of the top 5 hitters to have ever lived. He's either been using PEDs from the beginning or he's just that good. Either way, Davis and Bautista should be suspended for sure.

Anon... Have you ever seen him live? My God, he crushes that ball. It's something to see (and hear). I do think he's just that good but I guess I'll find out for sure if he ever speaks on the subject, right? A-Rod should be the next to fall.

O/T Thank you Sella35. I have been following SA here for many years but do not comment often. This article appeared in a local paper and is interesting as it is written in the first person singular. It is rather long but I would be interested to read the input of others. Have a great day.
Minutes after I was let out of the car I started seeing the police, neighbourhood watch and other vehicles with search lights. They were too far away for me to get to them, but I knew they were there, and it gave me such comfort.
I left Waxy’s in Westville at 9pm after having dinner with L, Wayne and R, assuring L that I would message her when I was safely inside my home, seeing as David was away in Joburg.
When I got home and saw that the lights and the TV in the main house were on, I didn’t feel at all uncomfortable. I locked the car and went to manually close and lock the gate, and started walking back toward the house. As I approached the house I saw four black men come out from behind the wall and everything started going in slow-motion.
They caught me and held me and put a beanie over my mouth, telling me to be quiet or they would kill me. As I saw them I threw my cellphone, purse and keys for the house and car on to the ground in front of them. They picked the stuff up and started going through the contents of my purse, and asked me to give them all my jewellery. One of them told me to show them the key for the car.
I told them they could have the car and everything else, and begged them not to hurt me.
They started pushing me towards the car, telling me they would let me out on the road. They unlocked the car and opened the boot, where they found the guitar. They took the guitar out and put it on the back seat. They then told me to get into the car, at the back, and took the guitar out again.
Two of the men got into the back with me, pushed my head down between my knees, and told me to keep quiet or they would kill me. One of the others made me show them the key to unlock the gate and he went to open it. The other two then got into the car as well and we started down the driveway.
The gate wasn’t open wide enough, so the guy in the passenger seat got out to open it wider, and then we started down the driveway. The driver was battling to drive the vehicle; the car was lurching and stalling.

o/t part2
As we were driving they were talking to each other in Zulu, and giving each other directions. I didn’t understand anything they were saying, but it didn’t seem as if they had a plan or knew where they were going.
They asked me how much money was in the bank accounts and told me to give them the codes. Although there were lots of bank cards in my purse, I told them there was only money in one account. For some reason they didn’t question this, and they told me to give them the pin number.
This was David’s bank account, and I knew that when they drew money from this account David would see where the money was being drawn from and realise I was in danger. We drove around for what seemed like ages, stopping a few times along the way. They would stop and talk, but not get out of the vehicle, before continuing with the journey.
I wasn’t allowed to lift my head up, but I could see the light from the street lamps shining on to the carpet for most of the journey. I kept asking them to let me out of the car. The one guy shouted at me, telling me that he’d already told me they would let me out on the road. He told me not to worry because they weren’t rapists or murderers. This was the guy sitting at the back with me, on my right hand side. When he shouted at me I realised that I mustn’t aggravate them, so I just kept quiet after that.
After driving for a while, with them talking to each other incessantly, the guy on my right told me that they weren’t going to take the car, because they just wanted the money, and that I would be able to go home.
They asked me where my children and my husband were. I started talking to them about my children, telling them I was the mother of a child about their age. The guy in the passenger seat in the front told me that he was 26.
Then they stopped the car and the guys in the back with me got out and took the bank card with them. I heard them mentioning the “rank”. Perhaps they were making plans to meet each other at the taxi rank after the guys had withdrawn money. I was trying to climb through from the back into the driver seat when suddenly the driver changed his mind and told me to get back into the back of the vehicle, and told his accomplice to get into the back with me.

o/t part 3
I was again made to put my head between my knees, and we started driving. There was constant telephonic communication between the two who had gone to the bank, and the two in the car with me. They told me I had lied to them about the pin number, and told me to give them the correct number or they would kill me. Despite this I didn’t see any weapons on the men at any time. I told them I hadn’t lied to them, and that perhaps they were trying to draw from a savings account instead of a cheque account.
They explained this to the guys at the ATM and I assume that was when they managed to withdraw money because they stopped threatening me. A couple of times we went off the main road and down dark, bumpy tracks. I was terrified that they were going to take me to a remote place and rape or kill me. I have never been more terrified in my life.
Strangely enough, as terrified as I was, I was incredibly calm, and I only broke down the following morning when I was found. I honestly believe my safety can be attributed to my remaining calm in the car with them.
We drove and stopped again, and the guy in the back with me lit a cigarette. He asked me whether I also wanted one and I told him I don’t smoke. None of these men smelled of alcohol or dagga. It amazed me that they were doing this completely sober. Perhaps that’s also what saved me… It’s more probable that they would have raped or beaten or killed me had they had been high or drunk.
Eventually we stopped again and the two guys who had gone to the ATM got back into the car, bringing another guy with them. There were four of us on the back seat, two in the front.
During this entire journey, other than when the one guy raised his voice at me, they didn’t shout at me or swear at me, or rough me up in any way, or treat me at all disrespectfully. I didn’t know it at the time, but I found out this morning that the word “bepa” in Zulu refers to sexual assault. I heard this word a number of times and thought they were talking about beating me.
The guy whowas originally sitting in the back with me on my right was the one who kept saying “no” when they said this.
I’m certainly not condoning their actions, but I am so grateful for the way they treated me. When I asked them at some stage during this ordeal why they were doing this, they said it was because they didn’t have jobs, they were hungry and needed money desperately.
The state of this country and the high rate of unemployment provoked this incident.

Anonymous said...

o/t part4 thankyou all
They continued driving, telling me they had only been able to draw a little money. I told them they had the card and could draw more in the morning. I begged them to let me go now, and to open a window because I was feeling very disorientated and car sick. They didn’t open a window.
They mentioned a clinic, and a bridge, and then suddenly stopped and one of the guys in the back with me took me out of the car and told me to walk into the bush at the side of the road. I thought he was going to rape me, but he just told me to sit down in the tall grass where after he ran back to the car and they sped off.
I sat there stunned for a moment and then got up and ran toward a house nearby. It was well lit up. I had second thoughts about knocking on the door and asking for help, because I was afraid of getting myself into an even worse situation.
I decided to run into the bush and hide until the morning. I decided that when I heard a woman’s voice I would come out of hiding and ask her for assistance. I had no idea where I was.
I looked around to try to find familiar landmarks in the distance, but didn’t recognise anything. I could see I was in the middle of a location. I was terrified they would change their minds about letting me go and come back for me, so I crawled under a bush and picked a lot of grass to throw over myself. The moon was shining so brightly, and I was so glad that I had dark clothing on.
I had no idea what the time was. I kept hearing the roosters crowing and got elated that it must be dawn and that this nightmare was almost over, but the roosters crowed all night. I ended up curled in such a tight ball to try to keep warm. I was shivering uncontrollably and my feet were numb with cold.
At some stage I crawled out from under the bush and went and lay in the long grass closer to the road, thinking I should run out if I saw a police car. Then these four happy little children bounded out of the house that was close by and walked past me to get to the road to catch their transportation to school. I wanted to call to them, but was concerned that I would frighten them. However, when they got to the road, I got up and walked towards them, asking them where their mother was because I needed help.

OT first person kidnapping account

One thing that stands out to me right away is that the victim repeatedly refers to herself and her captors as "WE"...we drove, we stopped, we went off the main road...this is unexpected because according to her she is their hostage, being transported against her will. Yet her language (& overall tone) is cooperative and nearly complimentary.

Jen said...

OT kidnapping statement: its so long I'm just going to post things that stand out. Sorry for serial posting!

The first paragraph is out of order & contridicts later parts of her account. She starts at the end saying that minutes after she was let go she was able to see police, neighborhood watch and other VEHICLES with search lights in the distance, but too far away for her to reach. (If they were close enough for her to see or know it was a search vehicle then it couldn't have been VERY far away...so why would she curl up under pulled grass and freeze for hours before seeking help?)

Next she describes leaving her friends and pre-explains why there was concern from her friends for her to let them know she made it home safe, and a plan to call one of them 'seeing as' (*=because) 'David' wasn't home...setting the scene.

Then after she asserts (in negative) that she 'didn't feel at all uncomfortable' (She just made plans to signal her safe arrival home, indicating she must have felt fear or uneasy). As she starts to describe the incident she goes out of order again, first describing seeing the assailant's and them 'catching' her and 'shoving a beanie' in her mouth (she later says they never treated her badly or with 'disrespect'). Then she back tracks saying that when she saw them she threw her belongings on the ground. These are basically two different scenarios, one where they 'catch' her and physically restrain her (catch indicating some attempt to get away), and one where she instantly submits, throwing down her cellphone, purse and keys..and therefore any means of escape or summoning help, upon encountering these 4 strange men.

She also says she 'told & begged them' things, AFTER the beanie was supposed to be shived into her mouth

Thank you for taking the time. I know it is long but I have kept coming back to it a number of times over the last few days. The victim was found at 6.00 am on Friday and this appeared at noon on Sat in the paper. This means the victim wrote it out within 24 hours. It was interesting from some of the classic SA points. The first part Has I, me etc in all the right places as well as they. It as you say suddenly changes to WE when the car starts up. She uses we whenever the car is moving. I use Kaaryn Goughs method of seeing a movie in my head. I agree on the part of the beanie being out of place.
In SA everything has a place and a purpose. I wonder what the point of the involved guitar story was.

Although perhaps not strictly not SA there appears to be no effort made to identify them or remember anything about their dress, mannerisms etc despite having talked to them about her family. It is the absence of any detail in this regard that is noticable.

This sentence stands out as odd and out of place"The state of this country and the high rate of unemployment provoked this incident." The rest sounds like retelling a story this is a statement of fact.

In the beginning she mentions seeing the searchers when she was dropped off. Towards the end she says nothing of this but only that she went up to a lit up house but felt unsafe and hid in the grass.

I did not include some of the end of the article as it was very long nor did I include the comments as pointed out as they add nothing to SA.

OT-kidnapping statement

Hi Anon 10:57

Sorry I got sidetracked, but you bring up some great points. I also found the info about the guitar strange. She makes the declaration that "The state of this country and the high rate of unemployment provoked this incident". Through the account she is unsure of EVERYTHING, yet she declares this not only as their motive, but she basically removes the responsibility for the crime from them and assigns it to the state of the country and unemployment! After reading Peter's newest post I was reminded that useless info is deemed double important. She has already stated THEIR motive was supposedly to get money because the didn't have jobs, so this statement is unnecessary, and may be indicative of HER motive if indeed this incident was staged or fabricated.

Like you said, she does not provide ANY description of the men, or a plea for them to be identified/caught. Nor does she confirm that ANY money was indeed taken, only speculating that they must have gotten some because they stopped threatening her. She says they spoke Zulu, and she didn't understand anything they said, then immediately contradicts herself by saying they asked her and told her multiple things, including their age, their motive and other things that she seems to 'know' they were talking about although she doesn't ever explain how. (For sake of argument we could assume they also spoke to her in English, but she doesn't ever say so)

Jen said...

OT-kidnapping statement

The more I read the stranger this seems!

So according to her she is kidnapped by 4 guys, forced to ride around with these 4 guys, forced to give these 4 guys her bank card and pin # and then when 2 of the 4 guys get out of the car to steal her money at the ATM, they return with another guy who then gets into the back seat with them (6 people in this car now, 4 of them in the back seat together!)

So I'm trying my best to imagine how the conversation went between these 2 kidnapper/thieves and this random guy at the ATM..."Hey, we just kidnapped a chick and we are riding around talking about raping her and stealing her money...wanna come with?"

Jen said...

OT-kidnapping statement

Anyway, as Anon mentioned when she recounts them letting her go, she makes no mention of the rescue efforts she supposedly witnessed and which 'gave her such comfort'. instead she again rambles on out of order saying that she ran to a 'well lit house', then decided not to knock on the door for help, THEN she backtracks and states that she 'had no idea' where she was, (although her captors who she didn't understand mentioned a clinic and a bridge before stopping) she didn't recognize any landmarks, but somehow knew she was 'in the middle of a location'.

She refers to 'being found' in the morning, but by her account she approached 4 'happy school children' and asked them for help from their mother. (Funny that there are 4 kidnappers and 4 hero's in this story). She wasn't FOUND, she asked some little kids to get their Mom (who she barely mentions). She SAYS she didn't want to call out to the kids because she didn't want to scare them... but then she gets up and approaches them, asking them to get their mother because she needs help! Seems contrived when she could have just as easily bypassed the kids and knocked on the door herself.

There was more at the end of the article how a man took her to his home and fed her porridge and called the police etc which I did not post as it was too long.

Another point that made no sense was once the had the bank card they..."we drove around for what seemed like age, stopping a few times along the way. They would stop and talk, but not get out the vehicle before continuing with the journey." Here she also mentions despite having her head down she can see the light from street lights. 5 Adults driving at nearly midnight in a Toyota yaris(not a large car)stopping to chat when they have the bank card and pin number. One would think they would just want to get the money and go.
There is also an interesting timeline added to this.

"started walking back toward the house"

"started going through the contents of my purse"

What does anyone think of these statements as reliable? It seems odd to me that, especially in writing, someone recounting would convey that an action "started" rather than conveying the action itself.

Why does she never claim ownership of the car? It's her car right? Why is it always "the car" and "the guitar" (whose guitar?) "the key." She does say "my jewelry" but she never tells us that she indeed gave them the jewelry.
"The PIN number" (not hers or David's), "a savings account instead of a cheque account." She rarely takes possession of anything in the story. Even as they drive away, she can't say it's her car.

I'm about 99.9% convinced that this is a hoax/fabricated story. How and when did any of her clothes get taken off? She doesn't say this happened, and even refutes it within her story. She talks about the clothes she was wearing when she was dropped off, saying she was glad her clothes were dark to help her hide in the bright moonlight! She goes on to say she was freezing, and spent the night curled into a ball to stay warm, so why would she have removed her 'dark clothes' which provided warth and disguise?

Hi Buckley-

Agreed..very strange way to reference HER vehicle. Also why is she making multiple statements online and to the media, giving interviews, even THANKING the assailants, but NOT talking to the police.

Her focus seems to be getting the story out into the media, and not working with authorities to help apprehend the perps. As I said before, I think her motive is to bring attention to the economical/political climate, which she declares to have provoked this incident in her account. (Regardless of whether this incident really happened or not)

Jen said...

I also find it very strange that she refers to herself as 'a mentally stable girlfriend'...wth? Who says that unless there is some doubt about their mental stability?

Anonymous said...

Yes, especially after all the talk about remaining calm. I noticed that sentence starts with "To be honest, all..." Also, note the order, mentally stable girlfriend before mother.

I see on Brad Nathansons Facebook page, Caron updated to say that she spoke to police all day and reports she was disappointed they found no fingerprints on the car or at the house. Also, I see comments about the guitar. Apparently, the boyfriend, David, mentioned to Wayne and/or the PI Brad, that the guitar would be found in the boot, though it was later found outside at their home. A comment also recounts that David indeed alerted those searching that he saw missing money from an odd location, as Caron had anticipated.

There were various articles on iol.co.za. The link to the article originally posted is:

http://www.iol.co.za/ios/opinion/thank-you-for-sparing-my-life-1.1549974#.UfFltdLpP7E

This was a statement she wrote and gave to the media within 24 hours of being found. This article was written in the first person which is very unusual for a newspaper. There are other articles to be found at Iol.co.za which are edited by the reporter. These articles do however have facts in them which are not in the original statement.

Anon has also commented on postings which appear on facebook which where written (also in the first person)by the victim. These are also interesting. They have been published on brad nathenson investigations on Fb.

It is interesting that the statement was given to the press immediately but only given to the police over 72 hours after being found.

This is interesting. In the victims narrative there is no mention of them loading any stolen items in the car. She had to show them the key to the car and the boot. There is that story of the guitar but no mention of items being taken.
Secondly if the items where taken, we are not told they are recovered. How can one take fingerprints from items not recovered.

Order is important

a mentally stable girlfriend to David, mother to my children and friend to my friends

It is interesting to note that she puts mentally stable girlfriend before mother to my children.

Why does she need to introduce the words mentally stable into her statement, is it because there have been times when she has not been mentally stable?

Why does she need to wait for the police to communicate with her before making a statement?
Surely it is in her interests to go to the station and make a statement since she claims to be the victim of a crime.

This story is off whack, the use of the pronoun We during the alleged abduction indicates unity and co-operation. Why not the use of pronouns them, they, he or i?

The timelines are out of order, her story about what she did when they left her is off and also how she got help.

I am not buying her story, there is simply too many red flags.

What is the relationship like between her and her boyfriend? Are they known to CPS or LE, has he had mental health issues before that she needs to introduce a mentally stable girlfriend as her priority?

It is interesting that the statement was given to the press immediately but only given to the police over 72 hours after being found.

Sounds like a hoax with an agenda

Why does she need to introduce the words mentally stable into her statement

This from her Facebook page:

"Morning everyone x I've received many comments

Durban - An estate agent who was abducted by robbers after she walked in on them at her Westville home, spent the night hiding in a forest.
When the robbers dropped her off, they took her jacket and shoes, leaving her with a thin T-shirt and tights. She was rescued cold and hungry by an Inanda pastor at 5am http://www.iol.co.za/dailynews/abductee-s-night-of-fear-in-forest-1.1549571#.UfE2I7-9Kc

None of these men smelled of alcohol or dagga. It amazed me that they were doing this completely sober. Perhaps that’s also what saved me…

This sounds like she was in close proximity to the attackers.

they were doing this completely sober... (Her statement makes them sound drunk or high...)

The driver was battling to drive the vehicle; the car was lurching and stalling.

As we were driving they were talking to each other in Zulu, and giving each other directions. I didn’t understand anything they were saying, but it didn’t seem as if they had a plan or knew where they were going

I kept asking them to let me out of the car. The one guy shouted at me,

After driving for a while, with them talking to each other incessantly

I saw four black men come out from behind the wall and EVERYTHING STARTED GOING IN SLOW MOTION.

I honestly believe my safety can be attributed to my remaining calm in the car with them.

During this entire journey, other than when the one guy raised his voice at me, they didn’t shout at me or swear at me, or rough me up in any way, or treat me at all disrespectfully.

This seems like irresponsible journalism. When women or vulnerable people are being attacked the advise is to scream and act like a crazy person, and to avoid getting into a car with the attacker.

When the mind and sensory organs fully merge
There are rare occasions when the full power of our analytical mind and our sensory experience come together in the moment. This usually happens in conjunction with a huge dose of adrenaline. Have you ever been in an emergency situation where everything turned into slow motion, and all of your senses were on hyper alert, while your mind was calculating every detail?http://advancedlifeskills.com/blog/has-your-analytical-mind-taken-over-your-life/

It seems odd to me that, especially in writing, someone recounting would convey that an action "started" rather than conveying the action itself.

On her FB page she has favorite religious books, yet unexpectedly absent from her statement is thanks to God, or recalling a prayer.
