Hannah Anderson, 16, Found

Girl, 16, freed as cops kill her abductor in Idaho

CASCADE, Idaho — The search for Hannah Anderson, 16, ended happily yesterday when the teen was recovered uninjured and her suspected abductor, James Lee DiMaggio, 40, was shot dead by cops.
“Hannah is safe, and that was our first priority from the very beginning,” said Sheriff Patti Boden of Valley County, Idaho, where the dramatic rescue took place.
Anderson’s father was “elated” that his daughter was found alive, said San Diego, Calif., Sheriff William Gore.
Officials said the girl has no physical injuries and will need counseling, but did not otherwise immediately discuss her condition.
SAFE AND SOUND: Law-enforcement officers converged on Idaho’s roadless wilderness in the search for Hannah Anderson (above), 16, who was freed, and abductor James Lee DiMaggio (below), who was killed.

AP
Authorities had first spotted the campsite of the girl and her abductor from a surveillance plane. DiMaggio was shot by an FBI tactical agent near Moorhead Lake during a confrontation at around 5:15 p.m., the sheriff said.
About 150 FBI agents, some 100 US marshals, and scores of local law officers had spent the day combing through Idaho’s rugged and mountainous Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the largest roadless area in the lower 48 states.
In all, the search for Hannah and her captor had spanned three states.
Authorities believed DiMaggio to be armed and dangerous, and so volunteers who know the area best — from the local search-and-rescue team — were not used in the search.
“You can’t have untrained folks out there. They have to have law-enforcement training,” said Jason Pack, an FBI special agent from the agency’s national press office in Washington, DC, before Anderson was found.
Federal law prohibits motorized vehicles from going into the area. Instead, searchers hiked or rode horseback, aided by trained search dogs.
“It’s called the River of No Return for a reason,” said Mike Medberry, 57, a writer and backpacking enthusiast who hiked in the area three summers ago. “It’s harsh and rugged, with steep terrain, lots of downed logs and thick brush.”
DiMaggio was suspected of killing Hannah’s mother, Christina Anderson, 44, and her brother, Ethan Anderson, 8, whose bodies were found last Sunday night in DiMaggio’s burning house in California near the Mexican border.
DiMaggio’s car was found Friday morning about 40 miles east of the tiny town of Cascade, Idaho, parked where the dirt road ends and the Sand Creek trailhead enters the wilderness area. Officers from San Diego planned to search the vehicle for clues yesterday.
The discovery of the car came about two days after a horseback rider reported seeing the man and girl hiking in the area.
The discovery launched a massive search, although there had been no other reported sightings of the pair since Wednesday.
The area is bisected by the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, a wild waterway that winds through steep canyons and dense forests. The river is extremely popular with recreationists.
But away from the river, it’s easy to disappear, said Jared Hopkinson, the owner of Rocky Mountain River Tours in Stanley, Idaho.
“If you wanted to go days without being seen, that’s the place to do it,” Hopkinson said.
Law-enforcement officials in San Diego have noted that DiMaggio bought camping gear a few weeks ago.
DiMaggio was close to the family. Brett Anderson, Hannah’s and Ethan’s father, has described him as a best friend and said his children thought of him as an uncle.
Authorities have said DiMaggio had an “unusual infatuation” with Hannah.

OT on the Erica Parsons case:
I am looking forward to hearing the parents speak, in the article that john at 7:50 linked to I didn't see where the parents said they didn't kill Erica, they said she wasn't in the house or backyard.
We are at a point in society that if abuse is reported there should be follow ups by CSD. I get an sick feeling when I hear reports from others around a child of how awful the abuse was, WHY don't they report it.
This home sounds like it was filled with violence.
Does anyone know if this was a legal adoption? It almost sounded like it was an agreement between families vs a formal adoption.

Another vague description of where the missing child went and who she went with. All these cases had to be there before Casey Anthony but it feels like she set the example of how to get away with murder, just wait a long time to report your baby as missing than have some vague description of where they went or where they think they are.

This is an interesting interview.

Check out he adoptive father..

Adoptive parents say they THINK missing Salisbury teen is OK..

Yet she keeps talking about her in the past tense...

There are so many questions in this case. If they adopted Erica from a family member, wouldn't someone notice she is gone. Didn't anyone in the family notice anything amiss when Erica wasn't there.
And the work THINK, most parents would feel too much shame to even say that. Parents are supposed to KNOW their children are ok.
Where is the emotion, the frantic worry? I wouldn't leave one of my animals with these parents let alone a precious child.
The parents wont say much or answer many questions, but they will talk with Dr.Phil, how gross and self serving is that. It has probably been all about the parents all of the time.
So far SA doesn't show much hope for this little girl.
Also wondering about health issues 4 feet tall isn't very big for a teenager. I wasn't sure if the report meant that for when she was younger or now.

At 12/13, Erica was 80-85lbs, 4'5".

People here are relieved that the FBI is involved..it appears to mean they know this is much more than a runaway.

If I read correctly, the grandmother died 5 years ago. That means she was dead long before Erica headed off to her house, and the parents knew it.

Looking forward to the parents speaking out. The fact they reported the other daughter missing after one night, speaks volumes to me.

Why didn't the biological mother know what was happening..Did she just stop all contact with Erica and the adoptive parents..The grandmother that is dead ,if im correct was the mother of Erica's biological father,Is he not around anymore..

Did they dupe all the neighbour's,what about school, doctors etc.Surely someone must have had their suspicions..

From Websleuth..

I'd like to know when Erica began being home-schooled. I found it quite interesting that Sandy Parsons made the comment that Erica was boy-crazy when she was in public school. (From the wscoc interview)
Yep, here's the quote:
Casey Parsons:

"She was NORMAL, just like my other daughter. A happy go lucky little girl. LOVED boys, even when she was in public school, HER BIGGEST PROBLEM was boys, she would go after them. She wanted another round of piercings in her ears, we already had one, WE weren'T going to let her go a second. She LOVES clothes. She WANTED her hair long, she always LOVED her hair long and curly, and she waited til the day she was able to get a computer and things cause we let our kids wait til a certain age until they get electronic things, and she talked about that quite often, that she was going to get that."

a fun odea although with some songs i am not sure what if anything could be discerned.
What would we make of lyrics that go "Na na na na na ,na na na, hey jude..." for most of the song apart from they were too drunk or stoned and ran out of words LOL

what about i am the walrus?

Songwriters: LENNON, JOHN WINSTON / MCCARTNEY, PAUL JAMES
I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

i watched the video of the adoptive parents talking , it is concerning.

There is a lot of past tense usage also the mom smiles when the report says hwe know her as a girl on a missing/endangered poster.
This is unexpected behavior to say the least.
my thought on seeing her reaction to the missing /endangered is she knows what really happened, she is smiling because the child is not missing or endangered. I strongly suspect she is dead and their is parental (adoptive) involvement

when someone uses the word normal in relation to a person or an event (it was a normal day...) we know it was anything but and they may have been thought to be not normal hence their need to say they are.

The dad's body language reveals tension even anger especially if you watch his eyes and jaw, it is like he is gritting his teeth, his whole body is tense, he is radiating anger, who is the anger directed at? the reporter for daring to question their version of events, the missing girl or his wife. He does not want to be there

when she talks about half siblings she says she got 3 (the liars number Mark McLish) which she says they got at the same time yet she shakes her head negatively.

There is also a blatant head shake when she says she raised erica from 4 weeks, also a head shake when she talks about Erica calling her momma and they couldn't let her go.

Head shake when saying her last day wasn't in november it was in december.

Watching the mom talk reminded me of mark redwine for some reason.

Watching the adoptive Parson parents in the interview, they look scared to me.
this part of the information on the timeline in the news article is scary:

-- July 30, 2013: After his parents kick him out, now 20-year-old James Parsons contacts the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and reports that Erica has been missing for two years and his parents have been cashing her monthly checks----

The parents don't mention they have been taking money each month. This just looks so bad. I will be surprised if Erica is found alive.

These parents don't even drive to look into where their child is when they can't find her online, a teenager not online?!?

The fearful and strangely angry look on the dad's face, and the very anxious look on the mothers expression during the interview, makes me think (non of the anxiety for the daughters safety, I think it is all for themselves) think they know they are in trouble.

I know it is not every case but home schooling allows a long time to pass before a child is noticed missing outside the home. The children can be very isolated.

I also agree with the poster above regarding the talk about Erica's problem being boys. This case reminds me of the Zahra Baker case. I know it has differences but that is where my mind goes when I am reading about it.

In the vt,the adoptive father is very passive, there is no animation from him whatsoever.A baseline would help us more in analyzing him to see if this is how he acts when not being in a stressful situation. It is like he is trying to control himself. If this is the case, then it reveals a lot.Yes he may not want to break down in front of people, but this is not the way people react in situation as this.

He makes no eye contact with Casey all the way through the vt.People in power who want to show authority(Politician's etc excluded, this is because they want to appeal to their voter)they don't make eye contact with their subordinates.Although Casey is doing all the talking,i fear that he is the one who pulls the strings..

@ 1:40,the interviewer says"And from what your attornies said, and from what your neighbors said, you guys taking in kids, its just what you do"

He reply's"Right" This is the only time in this vt he says something..

For me,this is him trying to come across as the caring adoptive parent, however, his body language says different.

@1:56 Casey says"the THIRD trip she went to Nan's on and that's the final trip were she stayed with Nan was December 17th of 20011"

Watch Sandy when she says"The THIRD trip" He swallows down, and clears his throat. This indicating anxiety and it's often accompanying dry throat. Is this the time when something happened?..

The caption in the vt reads Part 1.I cant find part 2,so he may be more animated, and talk more.?

Casey Parsons as we see does all the talking. This may come across that she is the one in control,i don't see it that way as stated above.

Interesting these people parented all 4 siblings for 2.6 years, but only adopted Erica, the other 3 were adopted by others. Not clear if it was with other family members, or if the kids were kept together (doesn't sound like it).

Since Erica is their niece, it seems odd that the grandparents are unknown to each other.

Also interested in the relationship with the grandfather in this clip. He suspects his own son..unusual to say so, imo.

Thank goodness for that horseback rider...

Had not not happened to see them, she may never have come home.

Poor thing still. To have lost your mother and brother then to be held by this man for days. I can not imagine the horror.

But I am glad he is dead. I am so sick of seeing stories where these guys get out early.

At least this child can know he will never hurt her again.

Thoughts: Hannah appeared scared, hiding her face. As the riders rode off, still within hearing distance, she gave the cryptic message re: we're all in trouble now. in...trouble...now! I believe she was trying to send subtle messages that something was wrong, hoping the riders would pick up on it. If that was the case, smart girl!

Hannah's best friend's Askme account shows some interesting statements. The best friend repeatedly uses the words "I don't think" when asked about whether Hannah would have left willingly with Uncle Monster and other questions related to Hannah's interactions with the creep. I hope this a form of speech used frequently by the teen and it's not indicative of anything.

Hannah was taken against her will and did not find out about her Mother and Brother until after her rescue.

The good news about the rescue of Hannah is that she will not have to face a defense lawyer in court and be cross examined for being the victim of a kidnapping and whatever else.

I hope that she gets a lot of TLC from her friends and family and trauma therapy.

I hope Peter does SA on some of Hannah's recent social media comments that are splashed all over the news. It's rich.

SpyGuy said...

Ok, here is another interesting aspect to the case. In Hannah's post-rescue social media Q & A session, she was asked and answered the following question.

Quote:
Q: Why do you seem so okay with everything. you answer these questions it seems without emotion. what you have been through is tough and you had a lot of peoole praying for you, in fact I did. It just seems so weird that everything that has happened to you doesnt seem to effect you at all.

A: I'm trying to stay strong. And get out the truth. You don't know I could be crying answering these questions at the moment. You can show real emotion over social media. Do you really think I would be Ohkay with being kidnapped and hurt Nd finding out my dog lil brother and mom was killed.? Your f***ing crazy.

Note the order of her perceived loss: she's more concerned about the death of her dog than that of her brother and mother (who is last in the list)!

SpyGuy said...

If you look at Hannah's recent post-rescue photos, she certainly seems extremely cheerful. She even got a fancy new sparkly manicure!

I'm reminded of Amanda Knox's unusual behavior immediately following the murder of Meredith Kercher.

SpyGuy said...

I know a lot of people are happy that DiMaggio was shot and killed, but now I fear we may never learn the truth about what happened. Even after hearing of Hannah's behavior from the initial contact with hikers, I was skeptical of allegations that Hannah was somehow an accomplice with DiMaggio. But now after seeing her very abnormal post-rescue behavior and statements, I'm concerned she may have been a participant.

Now we learn that Hannah and DiMaggio exchanged 13 phone calls on the day her mother and brother were murdered.

I hope Peter brings his expertise to any statements made by Hannah.

Anonymous said...

If you read the stuff she wrote on ask.fm (since removed but still findable elsewhere online) and her instagram, well... I'd like to see the SA applied to that, let's just say! Very interesting stuff, very very odd.

Add in the details like the 13 calls between her and the "kidnapper" the day of the murders, and the phones being turned off at the same time (what 16 year old turns off her phone??), and you have a scenario that is starting to look like she was involved some way.

Maybe she and DiMaggio were involved with each other (she would still be a victim in this case, as she is underage and can't consent to a relationship with a 40 year old guy). But what if she was complicit, thinking they were "in love" (it wouldn't be the first time a teen girl "fell for" an older man; this isn't a problem with a normal decent adult but if the guy is a creep like this guy...). Possibly the younger brother caught them together, told the mom, and that started the chain of events leading to their deaths?

At any rate, there's more to this case than is currently widely known. Hopefully the FBI will be watching Anderson closely.

OT UPDATE
Warrant: Red Stains Found On Pants, Drywall In Home Of Missing Salisbury Girl

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Investigators logged 68 items they took from the home of a missing 15-year-old girl during a search Wednesday, according to a report from WBTV.

According to a warrant obtained by WBTV, items removed from Erica Parsons' home include a plastic bag with JonBenet Ramsey magazines, a JonBenet book with notes inside about remodeling a house, a pair of Arizona jeans with red stains, electronics, mobile devices, paperwork and drywall cut and removed from a closet area with red stains. Baseboards in the closet with red stains were also removed.

The warrant states the section of drywall was tested for blood.

Erica was last seen by her step-brother, James Parsons, in November 2011, according to the sheriff's office. James reported that Erica was missing July 30, 2013.

Investigators said when he asked his parents, Sandy and Casey Parsons, about Erica's location, they told him she went to stay with her biological grandmother in Asheville.

Her adoptive parents said in a previous interview they didn't file a report because they didn't consider her missing. However, the warrant from the search of the home said the parents could not tell investigators the location of the home they took Erica.

The warrant said, "James told investigators that Sandy and Casey Parsons routinely abused Erica both mentally and physically. James also reported that Sandy and Casey Parsons continued to receive checks for Erica from the State of North Carolina after she was last seen in 2011."

In their report, investigators said, "It is believed that the continued desire to utilize the funds, proceeds, or financial assistance intended for the care of benefit of Erica Lynn Parsons resulted in the delay or outright denial to report Erica Lynn Parsons missing in a timely or reasonable time frame."
