Statement Analysis: Jesse Jackson on Australian Murder Victim

Jesse Jackson tweeted the following regarding the murder of Chris Lane, college baseball player from Australia:

"Praying for the family of Chris Lane. This senseless violence is frowned upon and the justice system must prevail."

Tweets are often abbreviated, so it is that we must view it in this context.  We note first:

"Praying for the family of Chris Lane. This senseless violence is frowned upon and the justice system must prevail."

1. "Praying" does not have a pronoun.  This is common in tweets, therefore, we look to see if it is a "dropped" pronoun, which has no commitment.  With a dropped pronoun, the subject has not told us who it is that is praying for the family of Chris Lane.  Since there are no other pronouns in the statement, we cannot call this a "dropped" or "missing" pronoun.

"Praying for the family of Chris Lane. This senseless violence is frowned upon and the justice system must prevail."

2.  Note "this" represents closeness.  The word "that" would indicate distance.  Since this came shortly after the murder, the word "this" is the expected.

"Praying for the family of Chris Lane. This senseless violence is frowned upon and the justice system must prevail."

3.  We note that he calls it "senseless violence" and not a "murder" or "killing."  "Violence" is often an engagement of physical activity.

It is often behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something.  This was via gun fire.  "Senseless" violence is differentiated by the subject, to "violence" by itself.  It would be interesting to look into the subject's language about violence, versus murders or killings.  This young man from Australia was a chosen target for bored killers, seeking to show themselves worthy of a gang status, perhaps.  There was no struggle, there was no unfortunate incident or misunderstanding, and there was no chance for the young collegiate from Australia to defend himself.

It was a premeditated killing of a human being to relieve boredom.

One may struggle how, in the human race, this can actually exist.  We then move towards the expected:  Outrage from the subject who claims to be a defender of human rights.  The extreme nature of the murder leaves us expecting a harsh condemnation from the subject.

4.  Next we note that which is quite unexpected in a murder:  "frowned upon":

Praying for the family of Chris Lane. This senseless violence is frowned upon and the justice system must prevail."
The phrase "frowned upon" is the unexpected.  When something is "frowned upon" it is disapproved, and this is often used in casual terminology, particularly when describing poor manners.  We know from the subject's language from previous cases that he uses the word "outraged"in describing "killings" and "murders."

One might "frown upon" table manners that are not becoming, or may be "disappointed" at a child who did not do his homework.  Coaches "frown upon" young Little Leaguers who did not hustle, in order to show disappointment.

The minimization of the murder is highlighted here by the subject's choice of wording.

One may wonder why it is that the murder of the young male from Australia is, in the subject's personal, subjective,  internal dictionary, an action that is "frowned upon", that is, disapproved of, rather than condemned or found to be "outrageous" in any form.

5.  Lastly, the subject says that the justice system "must" prevail, and not that it "will" prevail.  What has caused the subject to use the word "must" rather than expressing confidence in the justice system?

What about "senseless violence"? Does he then believe there is justifiable violence. What circumstance would that be.

Interesting and insightful analysis. The "senseless" jumped out at me, but maybe "frowned upon" reveals more of Jackson's heart.

So he gives out one quick short tweet that turned a horrible murder into "violence"

Then some of Jesse's statemetns about the Trayvon murder.

**********************

"We need a national investigation of the racial context that led to Trayvon Martin’s slaying"

and...

“Often the blood of martyrs forces change in America,” Jackson said. Later he told the convention, “The crucifixion of Medgar Evers drove the spirit of the 1963 civil rights movement. Today that figure is Trayvon Martin.”

************************

And these statments below he made.

"Despite the verdict, it’s clear that George Zimmerman would never have confronted a young white man wearing a hoodie"

"The prosecutor and the defense claimed that the trial was not about race. Then why was Trayvon Martin assumed to be threatening?"

*************************

First of all, George stated he was wearing a hoodie to describe him to the police, that was NOT the reason he looked suspicious.

Second of all, George HAS called the police to report "whites" that he felt looked suspicous along with "hispanics" and even helped a black homeless man whoes rights has been violated.

And last but not least, even the cleark at the convience store was leary of Trayvon. Watch the video, he followed him from the time he walked into that store to the time he left. So another black man felt that Trayvon looked threatning

**************************

Jesse is doing the same thing as everyone else. He is using this to once again fly his racisim flag.

He could care less about Trayvon. Trayvon was just a name he could use for his own cause.

Why is his answer here that the justice system must prevail? Why not use his platform to stress that parents need to do their job! Raise your kids, don't lie and steal and work for what you want.
He needs to condemn the parenting that leads to this behavior.

Jesse Jackson is once again "uncommitted" to his human rights agenda.

Jessie Jackson was also "uncommitted" in his marriage, so why should this "senseless violence" be worthy of his personal passions?

Jesse Jackson "frowned upon" the thrill kill mentality of three bored teenage boys. What a guy.

I frown upon jesse, and all of his buddies who contribute to racial unrest in this country.
I have watched jessie and his opportunistic buddies subvert the justice system in favor of racial inequality.
jessee is working the system, move along, business as usual.
jesse could be a positive influence to many in America, but he chooses to agitate.

And,
Has the IRS bothered to make jesse fill out one of it's obnoxious questionnaires?

Also read another Jesse rant.

He said that Trayvon is the next Medgar Evers.

OK. REALLY????

Trayvon was a kid that looked like a punk walking the streets at night in a neighborhood that he was not known at after several robberies had occured and everyone was on high alert.

Medgar was pulling into the driveway at his own home and a white supremacist and Klansman who gunned him down.

Yah Jesse. Thats the same thing.

These people amazing me the BS that comes out of their mouths.

Why are you ignoring the Hannah Anderson case? It seems like you don't really believe what you say about the subject being dead and the statement being alive, now that we have a 16 yo girl here. Why won't you take a stand on it?

Jesse Jackson, Oprah, and Sharpton fail to address the problem of the thriving thug culture lacking guidance from parents, often parents with drug parents, missing fathers, and people who have children for the purpose of collecting welfare. This is a topic Bill Cosby had the courage to tackle. In other words stop blaming others for your failures. There are wonderful black role models but kids turn to rap thug culture role models instead. Michael Jordan, Bill Cosby, black pastors who serve as role models. I am convinced that Jackson, Sharpton and Oprah types are only interested in the grievance mill as a way to rake in money. There is a website theblackmancan that seeks to speak to this.

Character is power.

Also what needs to be addressed here is the current POTUS who gave a green light to lost young men by stating "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon."

The POTUS leads and unites the citizens of America. Instead the previous community organizer behaved true to form, ceased an opportunity to divide and push his agenda. Worst POTUS ever. Even polls have him lower than Carter. Amazing.

"Frown upon" WOW, a shot to the back of an unsuspecting victim, and it's only "frowned upon." No outrage, no shock, no horror. Very telling indeed.

"Senseless Murder," said Mr. Jackson.....it was COLD,
CALCULATED MURDER, Mr. Jackson~ same for the WWII Vet who was 88-----88----88----88---- year old man beaten with a flashlight by thugs.

Mr. Jackson, all you care about is profiting from race division? No guidance, no words to the lost youth. No words to console. Lukewarm words is all you give.

Just my opinion, but I think that if Obama had a son he would look a lot like one of these murdering thugs.

peter, Hannah Anderson has not denied involvement, even though she's been given opportunity. She has not denied going with him of her own will. She only shuns her detractors. What do you say about this?

You hit the nail on the head with the "frowned upon" expression, Peter.

Chewing gum or kissing in public were frowned upon when I was growing up.

Murdering innocent people for sport should be denounced, repudiated, strongly condemned, not simply "frowned upon".

JJ is minimizing this horrific act by using this language.

" frowned upon" is used in passive voice here, not active voice. Who frowns upon this action? Not necessarily Rev Jackson because he doesn't say "I frown upon." Just [it] is frowned upon by some nebulous general entity, but not him, specifically.

Good point about the use of the passive voice, Susan.

Jesse Jackson should take heed of Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote, he may learn something if he would take the time to reflect on this:

“Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”

But many conservative bloggers and comments on social media websites — as well as the Fox News channel — have attempted to paint just about any other random account of violence against white people by black suspects as the counterbalance to the national furor over Martin.
Sorry; some of us aren't buying it.
Sharpton gave a succinct and reasonable answer to all those who wanted to know why he wasn't holding marches for justice for Lane.
"The system worked there."
What he meant was that all of the suspects in the deaths of Lane and Belton were promptly arrested and charged. In those cases, the justice system did its job, and, as a consequence, there's nothing to march about.
The crimes are still horrible, but the process has begun.
If the killers of Lane and Belton escape their punishment due to questionable circumstances, then perhaps people will have a reason to march for them as well.
