Special Forces soldier shot to death in Fayetteville home, police say

The tapes, which were released Tuesday afternoon by the Fayetteville Police Department, highlight the chaos from the homicide scene.
Police identified the victim as Sean Wayne Wells of the 7200 block of Beaver Run Drive.
Wells' wife initially called police to report the shooting. The first minutes of the eight-minute-long tape are the 911 dispatcher attempting to calm the hysterical woman.

"Somebody broke into my house and then they were asking for money and I think they killed my husband," she said through audible sobs.

1.  Somebody broke into my house
2.  They were "asking" for money
3.  "I think" they killed my husband

Note the order
Note the soft word "asking" (communicative language)

The woman said the family was inside their living room when the men, dressed in black, entered the home.
She and the couple's 4-year-old son were moved to

a different part of the home and she heard the shooting.
"Then I heard three shots," she said.

She told the dispatcher that she and the child were safe and were going to a neighbor's house to wait for police or medics to arrive at the home.
During the time the wife called police, the neighbor who let the woman inside called police twice.
In the two brief phone calls, the neighbor told the dispatchers they needed to hurry up and send someone to the Beaver Run community.

"Get someone over here," the neighbor said in the second call. "What system are you running? Hurry up and getting somebody here."

Note the priority of the neighbor's call is for help.

The woman continued to chastise the dispatcher and said she should not be asking questions, but, rather, should have police on scene.

If lawmen were not at the home soon, the neighbor said she would call the local news stations about the city's "raggedy system."

Wells, a sergeant first class assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), was found dead in his home following an altercation with two men who haven't been identified. The men stole a 2012 Toyota Camry from Wells' home; the car was later found on Rembrandt Drive near Rim Road, police said.

Police Chief Harold Medlock has said officers were called to Wells' house in west Fayetteville about 8:50 p.m. Wells was found dead inside, said police Lt. Todd Joyce.
Joyce would not say what type of weapon was used.
Medlock said the shooting did not appear to be random. He said officers found no evidence of a forcible break-in.
The men may have been driving a Dodge Dakota pickup, police said.
Residents in the neighborhood Tuesday did not want to comment on the murder.
Wells began his Special Forces training in March 2006 at Fort Bragg. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course as a communications sergeant in August 2007 and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne).
He deployed with the unit to Afghanistan twice.
"I know right now the unit is trying to figure it all out," said Maj. Allison Aguilar, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Special Forces Command at Fort Bragg. "They're dealing with it. These things just don't happen."
In March 1999, Wells enlisted as an air defense artilleryman in the Army, completing his initial training at Fort Bliss, Texas, according to the Special Forces Command. Upon completion of his initial training, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment at Fort Bragg.
In August 2002, Wells returned to Fort Bliss and served in a variety of positions at the Garrison Range Control. He left Fort Bliss in 2004, serving two years in Korea as an air defense artillery team leader.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal and two-time Army Achievement Medal.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call detectives at 433-1856 or Crimestoppers at 483-TIPS (8477).

What number three? There actually were three calls made to 911; one by the wife and two by a neighbor. Where else is there a number three; the three items Peter listed in order of priority? This is the norm.

Did I overlook something? Since there is such scant information, at this point I don't see anything that needs to be analyzed for deceit. Although she might have, IMO, to speculate that the wife had something to do with this as a result of these early statements being made would be pure conjecture and goes back to Maggies' 'gut feelings'.

No offense Maggie; but here's the problem with gut feelings: If Susie has a gut feeling that such and such happened, and Mary Jane has a gut feeling that this and that is what happened, and Louise has an entirely different gut feeling about what happened, and the psychic reader has the gut feeling that you need to go down to the 20' pole at the Y crossroads and hang a left then a right at the big white rock; whose gut feelings are we to believe?

And then there's me who always leans first towards the side of common sense, plus lies and deception, plus body language; last but not least, lack of cooperation with LE and your own forthright participation in finding the child or your lack of diligence in helping to solve the crime. It's not all in the usage of one or two grammatically incorrect words, improper English, or the infrequent darting about of ones' eyes; and particularly not in your 'gut feelings' however strong they may be.

Well at the moment at least, it appears that there were in fact, three calls to 911.

What are some actual scientific statistics that Sapir uses to justify red flagging that number? Actual numbers of cases of proven innocence vs proven guilt where the use of the number was verifiably a lie?

Okay, I stand corrected. In rereading I see where the wife said she heard three shots. Okey dokey. Maybe there were three shots; not four not two, THREE. Threes' do happen. SOOOoo, until (IFF) we learn better, three it is.

"Then I heard THREE shots," she said.

It is Mark McClish who researched the number 3..

When liars have to pick a random between 1/10 they more often than not graduate to the number three..

It is not always true that it is a lie,it just means more questions should be asked regarding that part of the statement.

Thanks for the link John. I wonder why Hannah is just now coming up with this story? I see she admits now that she was at the residence after DiMaggio picked her up from her school practice session, why not earlier? Everybody knows now that their two cell phones were turned off between 4:00 and 8:00 pm and hers was found in the house fire.

Fact is, I don't believe a word this little twit says. She had been on outings and out-of-town trips before with DiMaggio, with him catering to her and paying for her every whim; now all of a sudden he is a creep whom she despises? He wasn't a creep when he was spending all his money on Hannah and her family. He was Uncle Jim and the kindest guy in the whole world.

This is one cold cookie. IMO the one she really despised was her mother, and unfortunately her little brother who knew too much and could have ratted her out, got in the way of her selfish desires to kill her mother. The dog might have put up a barking frenzy during the commission of the killings and his killing was to shut him up. Just my thoughts.

I know you're a baseball fan, Peter. Are you interested in analyzing Jared Remy's words? His lack of denial is obvious to anyone, whether they have SA knowledge or not. It mighy be a good, current, example of a non-denial.

I'm also interested in his statements regarding his daughter, where he says she's in a "good place", even though she's still in State care (both sets of grandparents have petitioned for custody). As well as him hoping his parents obtain custody, due to his parents financial means.

He gives clues to his guilt in his statements, such as things like, his parents probably aren't thrilled with him right now, and questioning whether his daughter will ever want anything to do with him.

Obviously there were multiple witnesses, who even tried to physically step in to stop him during the murder. I have no idea how he's pleading not guilty. Does an "insanity" plea have to be entered at the arraignment, or can it be entered/changed later?

http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/local_coverage/2013/10/in_wide_ranging_jailhouse_interview_jared_remy_denies_killing

“No. That’s ridiculous,” Remy insisted when asked if he killed Martel. “How dumb would I have to be? I loved her, I still love her.”

“I’m just trying to get adjusted here,” Remy said. He said he has spoken with his father over the phone. “I’m sure they’re not thrilled with me right now.”

Arianna, Remy’s 5-year-old daughter with Martel, remains in state custody, but he said, “She’s in a good place. She has a dog to play with, which makes me happy because she loves animals. I’m hoping she’s going to be a veterinarian one day.”

Asked if he was on steroids at the time of his arrest, Remy said, “No, I’ve admitted to taking them in the past but no, I wasn’t currently taking them.”

He said of his parents, “They’re very good people. I wish the media would leave them alone. None of this is their fault. They don’t need to be dragged down in this, too.”

“I know my life is going to suck when I get out of here,” he said.

^^ Those are snipped from the article.

Amber Rose Smith Missing:

Amber Alert Issued For 2-Year-Old Michigan Girl..

Authorities in rural western Michigan have issued an Amber Alert for Amber Rose Smith, a 2-year-old girl who disappeared from her home Tuesday.

According to the Amber Alert, the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office believes the child, who has a severe mental/physical disability, is in extreme danger.

Investigators said the girl was last seen at her Paris home, in the 8000 block of E. 13 Mile Road, on Tuesday afternoon.

Amber's father, Dale Smith, told WZZM13.com THAT HE USED BATHROOM AND WHEN HE CAME OUT HIS DAUGHTER WAS GONE.

Smith told authorities his daughter would occasionally go outside to play with the family dogs. He searched for about (30) minutes before reporting her missing.

"I [went outside] and yelled for her," he told WZZM13.com. "The dogs came out of the woods but Amber didn't."

Investigators are looking into reports of a suspicious green truck that was recently spotted in the area, but have yet to elaborate on whether there is a possible connection.

Authorities spent much of Tuesday searching woods in the remote area, which is surrounded by lakes and streams.

Amber Smith is described as 2 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 25 pounds. She has hazel eyes and strawberry blonde hair. The child was last seen wearing a black halter top with pink bow tie, possibly blue jeans, and NO shoes.

No other details were made available in the Amber Alert.

Anyone with information on the girl's disappearance is asked to contact the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office at 231-689-6623

Did the wife leave her husband to go to her neighbours house whilst awaiting the emergency services?

When more info is released that might make sense but it sounds odd, you would expect her to try and help him.

I too hope this has a good outcome and she is found very soon.

"Somebody broke into my house and then they were asking for money and I think they killed my husband," she said through audible sobs.

-She first says that 'somebody' (singular) broke into my house.

-Then the intruder changes to 'they' (plural) were 'asking' for money (not demanded or harsher language which would be expected). You 'ask' someone to hand you a napkin, you don't 'ask' for money in an armed home invasion robbery.

-She buries the 'headline' at the end. The most important thing is getting help for her husband who has been shot. Her first words to the operator should have been..'I need an ambulance, my husband has been shot', or something similar. Instead she immediately accepts that he is likely dead, and makes no pleas for help, or instructions for first aid/CPR in hopes of saving his life.

"Then I heard three shots," she said.

-Then she heard '3' shots (skips over a lot of details). Maybe he was shot 3 times, it will be interesting to find out how many times he was actually shot from the autopsy. But more importantly, why is there no mention of the 'intruders' leaving? Why did they leave her alive to ID them? Did she not run directly to her injured husband and attempt to render him aid, give him CPR, barricade herself and her son while calling 911, etc.

-Instead she goes to a neighbor's, (what if 'they' were still outside) leaving her husband with no possibility of CPR.

OT Amber Rose Smith.

Quote from her Mum.

The girl’s father told WOOD-TV that she was able to open the front door of their home by herself. He said he noticed Amber, who has a severe mental/physical disability, was missing around 1:30 p.m.

Amber’s parents said she has wandered away in the past, and once they found her at a neighbor’s house.

“It’s hard not knowing. Wondering where’s she at. Is she ever going to come home? I don’t know what to think. All I know is I don’t feel very good,” Diane Smith, the girl’s mother, told WOOD-TV.

The wife's call seems rehearsed and planned, or she had some sort of knowledge this might happen. She tells the events in the order they happened rather than pleading for help...perhaps to keep her story straight.

Rebutting what I just said... this is one small part of an 8 minute call. If the wife begged for help earlier, then the operator told the wife to tell her in order what happened, then it is reflective language.

In the actual call the wife uses "somebody" and changes to "they." Somebody is more specific than they. It suggests she knew or recognized them as they entered the home, but distances herself when they "asked" for money.

The wife says "MY house". My is unexpected as she was in the home with her husband and child. I would think she would use "our."

"and then" suggests something more happened between entering the home and asking for money.

Not only is "asking" soft, but she says "were asking." This suggests the action was not completed. What or who stopped the asking for money.

If she only heard the shots, she would have no idea her husband is dead. He simply might have been shot and that would have been more appropriate to say. Heck, for all she knew her husband might have done the shooting. To me "I think" suggests a plan or knowledge he is dead.

Last, behavior wise...removing her and her child to another room suggests knowing her and not wanting to hurt her.

I would investigate alternate scenarios here. One, that the wife hired someone. Two, that there was something else going on...drug deal? Three, an argument between the wife and husband about money. Possibly even that they were separated and the husband came to "MY house. "

"I think they killed my husband," she said through audible sobs.

--In innocent 911 calls, wouldn't the people asking for help for the victim not accept that the victim is dead. She is already accepting his death.

John,

I understand this, that's why in my question I called it a 'red flag indicator' and regardless of who came up with it, where are (or are there) hard, verifiable facts? What are the percentages of times someone uses the number 3 where it's verifiable to be a lie versus when they use the number and it's verified to be true? Other numbers, etc? This is a very valid question, I never suggested that it out-right means a lie, I am asking why it is a red-flag indicator other than "so and so said it is more often used" well, where and what is his hard, scientific research to back up this claim?

Please read posts before commenting, not everyone coming here questioning things is totally unaware of how it works, I get that it is a **possible indicator**, hence the phrasing 'red flag indicator' on my part
