Leanna Harris Under Investigation

Leanna Harris, wife of Josh Harris, is now also under investigation in the death of her toddler, who was left in Josh Harris' vehicle, who claimed to have forgotten the child was there.

Harris went out, after 7 hours working in Home Depot, to find his child dead, and screamed, "What have I done? I've killed our child!"

Statement Analysis took two issues from "I've killed our child"

1.  "our"

The overwhelming number of biological parents use the word "my" and not "our."

"Our" is used regularly when:

a.  Two parents are together, speaking as one
b.  When there is step parenting involved
c.  When there is a need to share guilt
d.  When there is a need to distance oneself
e.  When married biological parents are talking about divorce
f.  When a child is adopted

2.  "child"

The word "child" is associated with risk, such as "child abuse", "child molestation" and "child protective services."

Here, the biological father not only had a need to "share" ownership of the child, but he avoided using his son's name, or title as "son."

We then learned that the father had researched how long it would take for an animal to die in a car and that he had gone out at lunch time and checked upon the child, hours before claiming to do so.

Next, we heard Leaana Harris bizarre statement at the child's funeral in which she seemed to be in concert with her husband, using religious language seemingly to show that their son has been spared certain heartaches of life.  The context and timing was strangely concerning, including her description of her son's lips and some of the more minor 'heartaches' that her son would not encounter, such as socially awkward situations, those things that teach a child how to cope in life.

Police are now investigating her, and we have seen that she, also, researched how long an animal would live in a car, in the heat.

We may see charges levied against her soon.  Her statement is here:

Friends, Family Mourn 21-Year-Old Long Island Mother Killed, Found in Woods

The 21-year-old Long Island mother who was killed and then found in the woods less than a mile from her home last week was mourned by family and friends at a funeral service in Medford Thursday.

Sarah Goode's 4-year-old daughter clung to her mother's photo and rested in her grandmother's arms as the bearing Goode's body was escorted by mourners from St. Sylvester’s Church.

An honor guard and bagpipe contingent of the New York City Correction officers joined the funeral procession, coming to Long Island to support Goode’s sister, who is a correction officer.

“I wake up in the morning, like, wow. Is this for real? Feels like a dream, you know?” said Shane Bonilla, who went to high school with Goode.

Goode’s body was discovered last Thursday in a wooded area less than a mile from her Medford home. She had been reported missing days before, when she disappeared after spending a night with friends in Shirley.

Suffolk Police have labeled Goode’s death a homicide but have not made an arrest and have not yet described how she was killed.

“It's unbelievable how someone could actually SIT there and do it. The big question is, why?” said friend John Soto, who wrote “RIP Sarah Goode” on the window of his car.

He mentions the word "Sit", and as we know, when body posture enters into a statement it is a signal of increased tension.

In other articles, it has been said that there was signs of a struggle in her car. Its just this one word "Sit" sent up a red flag. I shall keep my eye on this case.

Police call the murder probe an “active” investigation.

In the meantime, a memorial of photos, stuffed animals and notes is growing on the street where Goode’s car was discovered after she was reported missing.

Distraught friends have urged Goode’s killer to surrender.

“How can you be so cruel?” asked friend Crystal Ryan last week. “If you know who you are, come forward and confess."

off topic

Amanda Knox's Italian ex-boyfriend has insisted that he did not kill Meredith Kercher and said the American's evidence provides him with an alibi.

Raffaele Sollecito says the judges who overturned his acquittal based their decision on a Knox statement that proves he was not at the murder scene.

Both he and Knox are currently free while they prepare to appeal against their murder convictions.

Miss Kercher was killed in the flat she shared with Knox in Perugia in 2007.

The prosecution argued that the the British student was stabbed to death after an argument with Knox, and that Knox, Sollecito and another man, Rudy Guede, attacked and murdered her.

Guede was convicted in a separate trial and is serving a prison sentence.

Knox, who is now in the US, and Sollecito were originally found guilty of murder and sexual violence in 2009.

But that ruling was reversed on appeal two years later after doubts were raised about the forensic evidence against them.

In January, a court reinstated the guilty verdicts and Knox was given a 28-year jail sentence, while Sollecito got 25 years.
Exonerated?

At a press conference in Rome on Tuesday, Sollecito insisted that he was innocent but said he remained convinced that Knox was too.

Unveiling his new defence strategy, he said January's guilty verdict had been based on evidence from Knox that exonerated him.

"The 25-year prison sentence given to me is based entirely on the statement written by Amanda Knox in pre-trial detention. She herself exonerates me entirely," he told press.

In the statement, she says she was in her flat while the murder was being committed, "with my hands over my ears because in my head I could hear Meredith screaming".

Sollecito is not mentioned by Knox in the text, which his defence team says is proof he was not present at the scene.

"Taking it as read that the judges are right [in basing their verdict on Knox's statement] will you please explain what I have to do with it?" Sollecito said.

Knox later withdrew the statement after saying she had written it under police pressure, and the pair have been each other's alibis since, saying they spent the night together at his house.

Sollecito's lawyer Giulia Bongiorno said that while he has always said he "spent the night" with Knox, he has never said they spent the evening together.

Ms Bongiorno added that her client's appeal would cite a text message that Knox claims to have sent while with Sollecito at his house.

"This text message, according to the court's own ruling, was not sent from his house. Therefore the pair were not together," she said.

Despite throwing doubt on his ex-girlfriend's alibi, the Italian said he had "always believed, and still believe, that Amanda Marie Knox is innocent."

The trial is due next year to go back to Italy's highest court, which could uphold the verdict or order a retrial.

If the verdict is upheld, officials are expected to begin the process of trying to have US citizen Knox extradited to Italy.

Oh dear, it isn't good when your only alibi is the woman who was also found guilty of murder.

At a press conference in Rome on Tuesday, Sollecito insisted that he was innocent but said he remained convinced that Knox was too.
Oh dear, here he doesn't tell us knox is innocent, that she didn't do the crime, only that he remains convinced that she is innocent, leaving others to be convinced otherwise.
Either she was with him or she wasn't, if she wasn't then he should be telling the world he could not account for her during a certain period of time, If she was with him the whole times then he then has the problem of her own handwritten confession.

"The 25-year prison sentence given to me is based entirely on the statement written by Amanda Knox in pre-trial detention. She herself exonerates me entirely," he told press.

In the statement, she says she was in her flat while the murder was being committed, "with my hands over my ears because in my head I could hear Meredith screaming"

Sollecito is not mentioned by Knox in the text, which his defence team says is proof he was not present at the scene.

"Taking it as read that the judges are right [in basing their verdict on Knox's statement] will you please explain what I have to do with it?" Sollecito said.

Are we now seeing it is every man for themselves?
His alibi is she didn't say he was there in her handwritten confession.
Basically he is now saying she murdered Meredith as she admitted being there in the apartment but she didn't make any mention of him.
She was there he wasn't so him alibing her is gone and her alibing him is down to her written statement.

Will he start talking and throw her under the bus?
it seems to be heading that way, especially as they had only known each other for a couple of weeks.
If he were innocent , he owes her nothing, if he were guilty he has every reason to throw the blame on knox , as she was her flat mate and there were issues between them.

We are seeing it boil down to the nitty gritty, he spent the night with her rather than the evening which would imply a time when they weren't togeather which meant knox could have killed Meredith and then we have the romantic and telling shower scene. (she would have been covered in blood, why did he not ask what had happened to her prior to him scubbing her clean?)
if he were innocent then he should and would have said she arrived and had blood on her, she said it was... and he would have used it in his defence in court, throwing her uncer the bus so to speak.
he doesn't make mention of it because he knew how she got the blood, he was there.

Despite throwing doubt on his ex-girlfriend's alibi, the Italian said he had "always believed, and still believe, that Amanda Marie Knox is innocent."
Notice he says innocent which is weak rather than the stronger she didn't kill Meredith.

Methinks perhaps the worm is turning, is he going to minimise his role whilst making knox the main player and thus hoping to do a deal to have hs sentence reduced if he tells what happened since the sentences although reinstated, still have to be ratified.

"Some of you might wonder how I'm even standing here today."

Inclusion of body posture is a signal of increased tension and it's important to her she indicates she is "standing" to the audience (her perceived supporters); that she is strong in her faith, that she is able to support herself with her own two feet, that she is so confident in her husband's innocence she has summoned the strength willing to make an argument and persuade listeners.

"I wonder that myself and I asked myself that question over and over the last week."

She is asking herself what?  How am I going to stand there in front of everyone I know and lie to my church members?  Not why did this happen? Not how did this happen? Not how am I ever going to survive?

"This is not where I expected to be here today."

Leanne indicates deception when she tells what she didn't expect thereby pointing to critical information. Where did she expect to be? The answer is key. I am assuming they expected their plan would be successfully executed. Ross would have pulled off the dramatic parking lot scene. He would have been the one to give the eulogy and speak for the family as he was the "leader." She expected to be in the front row. She did not expect to be defending her husband at her son's funeral complete with speakerphone and applause.

Jo said...

Interesting comment ima.grandma. Did she plant that Ross was the leader as a way to defend herself if she is arrested also?

Juliette said...

I have trouble perceiving a funeral where everybody attending the funeral service applauds for the person who caused the demise of the person for whom the service is.

Ross caused Cooper's death yet Ross was applauded by all the people who came to say goodbye to Cooper.

Nope, I can't wrap my head around it.

Anonymous said...

"This is not where/ I expected to be here today."

Is the part of this statement, when Leanne says 'I expected to be here today' an embedded confession?

Anonymous said...

I want to know why her first statement was towards her husband, to tell him that she loves him and that she's doing "this" for him "ok", and not to, for, or about her son.

GeekRad said...

I read that Leanna had been arrested and released with an electronic tether. Darned if I can find the link now.

It intersts me that using the word child might signal abuse. I have a friend/co-worker who always referred to her kids as "the children". it always struck me as odd since we know and love those kids and are close to them. I see now- she is a very demanding woman and was verbally abusive blowing up at them.

Anonymous said...

I know, that's pretty strange. I think most of the friends and family probably really thought it was an accident at first, although it is still strange. If I was the mother, I know I'd be mad. If I was a grandparent, aunt, uncle, what have you, I think I'd be mad at him as well. Even if I thought it was an accident, I think I'd be thinking "what an idiot" (probably with some choice words too). Someone close to him (his immediate family) probably clapped and others felt compelled. Probably same for the laughing at Leanna's remarks about jr high/high school. I don't find it funny that she doesn't want her son back, no matter the trivial reasons she provided.

Anonymous said...

I didn't click the link, but is there no suspect? She was found so close to home. Who did she live with she was 17 when she had her daughter? Who reported her missing?

A very sad situation for her daughter. :(

The rear facing car seat is bizarre I know there are new regulations but the rule off thumb is usually if there head is higher than the top off the seat,my son who is a month younger than cooper has been in a front facing carseat for about 6 months! Now my son falls on the 25 percentile for weight and height (75 % off babies his age weigh more) how could copper fit and feel comfortable in a rear facing car seat? Unless he was unnaturally small.

So sad said...

Peter- what's the deal with the "toddler lips" statement? I thought it was oddly worded but not sure what else it signifies.

Anonymous said...

I do think it's weird too. I guess it's safer, but with their legs squished and scrunched up, is it really? I don't understand it. Back when my daughter was around that age, her doctor told me that there are new, I don't remember what she called it, suggestions maybe, but she said we could safely switch her to forward facing, and that it was up to us. I think it used to be one year or such and such weight, right? I switched her at about probably 16 months. It seemed weird to me to have her facing the other way. My son is older, I switched him at one year, which was regulation back then.

If you go on any mommy groups or sites there are people who keep or want to keep their kids rear facing for YEARS. Idk, my kids liked to talk and interact with me while driving. For instance, pointing out certain things that catch their eye.

Anonymous said...

The 'toddler lips' statement is strange to me too, especially when the mother goes on to say she should be 'crumpled in a heap of snot'...

She isn't crumpled in a heap of snot or tears...odd statement with odd priority sequence.

Did Cooper have a cold and was this the reason he was in their bed, getting snot on/breathing on the mother? She should be crumpled in snot but the cause of the snot is gone so she's not got snot all over her?

Anonymous said...

'Crumpled in a heap of snot and tears' sounds more like the description of a sick toddler who finally fell asleep than the reaction of a woman whose baby has been killed.

Anonymous said...

'Crumpled in a heap of snot and tears'...the image of her baby dying in a hot car comes to mind...

Anonymous said...

Also the lip statement is weird, she might have known that evening was the last she would have with Cooper, and that is a possibility why something so odd would stand out and be of importance to her.

Anonymous said...

Leanna's comments at the eulogy are disturbing. So many irregularities that I would have to write a very very long post. She is supposedly happy Cooper is no longer in this 'broken world,' yet, she alludes to possibly having other children with Ross?! This 'mother' was not aware of the world situation before she and hubby tried so hard to get pregnant. She is a liar. I am glad she is under investigation. Would not be surprised in the least if she and Ross premeditated this horrific crime against their innocent baby.

The rear facing car seat is not odd. Car seats are made with higher weight limits to keep babies rear facing as long as possible. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended back in 2011, that babies be rear facing until age 2. This baby was 22 months, so they were doing the right thing to keep the baby the safest.

http://www.parenting.com/article/car-seats-safety

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say he was "safest", but that has nothing to do with whether he was front or rear facing.

I understand the recomnendations, I personally don't like it. I think it's weird for a 4, 5, 6, etc., year old to have their legs either squashed up or stucking up in the air facing the roof of the vehicle. What are the statistics on kids of such age being saved in a crash for both forward and rear facing?

I really don't care. Im glad my kids are older, so I won't have to be looked down upon because my high schooler isn't still rear facing. ;)

Thank you for sharing elf!

Could the lip statement be related to a kiss good bye that morning? Her last interaction with Cooper.

The 12 year old boy, Charlie, said upon discovery that stepmother put him in the basement and told him not to come out no matter what he hears. Charlie was missing for nearly two weeks as father searches own his own eventually drawing the attention of Nancy Grace. Items found at the home included bloody clothes and blood on a PVC pipe. Upon examination the boy was found to have a circular bruise and multiple bruises on the child's buttocks that come from a long cylindrical object. Video of the boys father and stepmother show husband and wife leaving a court proceeding holding hands and smiling.
Part of Charlie's 'workout' included 4000 steps on an elliptical trainer everyday.

I don't know that there's a reliable account of exactly what Harris said in the parking lot. Apparently he was rambling on, repeating things but using slightly different phrases. Maybe he used the words, "I've killed our child" -- but maybe a witness simply substituted those terms when recounting the scene.

A Daily Mail article reports: "Harris was then handcuffed by police officers after he became irate during a heart-breaking phone call to his wife Leanna during which he told her ‘our baby is dead’."

This article has a witness quoting Harris as saying, "What have I done, oh my God I've killed my son."

Terry Elvis has shown no deception in his statements. He had nothing to do with Heathers disappearance. He is in pain, that shows in every word.
This blog isn't about attacking people. Its a place to learn and study.
Plus there is a gag order in place, we can't forget that. Its very important that Tammy and Sidney Moorer receive a fair trial.
Does that make sense?

Are we even sure the baby was alive when put in the car seat? Two nights without sleep, maybe one of them snapped and killed him. The reports of rigor mortis seem odd. He would have had to have died very early for so much to have set in.

But he says the issue was not raised with him subsequently.

Question about using the word "child" -- in general, not in a particular case.

Since finding this site I am hyper-aware of my use of the word "child" or "children!" :) I notice that when I am doing more formal writing or speaking, though, those are the words I feel I should use. I've read/heard people comment that to them "kids" is a disrespectful term for children... Also, my grandfather made an issue of pointing out that we were actually speaking of baby goats anytime we used the word "kids" for people.

Is there any difference across generations in what the expected term is? Is this another case where one just listens to the words used and notes deviations from the most common term?

Prosecutors to lay out case against dad of tot who died in hot car

Here's what to expect when he heads to court Thursday.

Here's what to expect from Thursday's hearing, as explained by criminal defense attorney Philip Holloway (who works in the same county where Harris faces charges):

This is a preliminary hearing, which is usually called a "probable cause" hearing.
The burden of proof will be on the prosecutors. It's their responsibility to prove to a judge that a crime was probably committed in this case and that the person who likely committed that crime was Harris.
Hearsay (or information that someone gets from someone else and can't substantiate themselves) will be allowed.
There will not be a jury present but, instead, a magistrate judge. This judge will not end up being the trial judge (a Superior Court judge will be assigned later if the case goes to trial).
The judge will hear testimony from a police officer (usually the lead investigator in the case), who is expected to be the prosecution's only witness.
That witness will be subject to cross-examination by the defense team.
If the judge decides that the prosecution has met its burden, then he or she will permit the case to proceed to a grand jury.
The grand jury may be asked by the district attorney to return an indictment -- or the ultimate charging document -- with the same charges Harris currently faces or with different charges (the warrants in the case right now are preliminary charging documents only -- the indictment will replace them).
The issue of bail is also expected to be addressed at this hearing (Harris is currently behind bars without bail).
While the defense isn't expected to call any witnesses on the issue of probable cause, they may choose to call some character witnesses to make an argument as to why Harris should be released on bond.

FOX 5 is learning more about what the father allegedly did on the day his infant son died while he was left in a hot car.

Court records allege both Ross Harris and his wife Leanna Harris, at some point, conducted internet searches related to deaths in hot cars.

Mr. Harris claims he forgot his 22-month-old son Cooper Harris was in the car and it was an accident. In order to disprove this claim, police are looking for any break in his normal routine or any clue something was out of the ordinary.

Police are retracing every move Ross Harris made on that day.

Police believe Cooper Harris and his father pulled out of the parking of the condo where they started their day, sometime just before 9:00 a.m. on June 18.

According to court documents, Mr. Harris took his son to Chick-Fil-A for breakfast and just before they drove off he put Cooper into his carseat.

Mr. Harris drove to his office at Home Depot which took FOX 5 three minutes and 14 seconds to time.

According to police, in that time, Mr. Harris said he forgot about his son and went inside to work. Court records show Mr. Harris went back to his car to put something in it 2-and-a-half hours later.

Two different law enforcement sources tell FOX 5 during that lunch hour Mr. Harris left his work property to go out to lunch, but didn’t take his car.

Sources tell FOX 5 police are looking at every move Mr. Harris made, down to where he parked and the people he interacted with.

Mr. Harris left work after 4:00 p.m. not noticing his son in the backseat, even though sources tell the FOX 5 I-Team the smell inside the car made it obvious something was wrong.

At one point, Mr. Harris drove in the opposite direction of his home.

It took FOX 5 eight minutes and 18 seconds to get to the location where Mr. Harris says he first realized his son was in the hot car.

Ross Harris goes to court on Thursday and at that hearing a judge will decide if bond should be granted.

How he didn't notice his son at lunch is hard to believe. I doubt that he didn't remember ( if it is indeed accidental ) at some point especially returning to his car, and leaving work immediately. Why would he deny something he hasn't been accused of? THAT would be suspicious!

At first, I didn't understand the sgnificance of Justin Harris' statement, "I've killed our child," but now it does sound very odd. Why not use his son's name? It's also like he's accepting responsibility. I don't want to presume I would know how I'd react in a siruation like that. But when I have been in situations where I have panicked with my kids, when they've gotten hurt or become ill very suddenly, I say my daughter (talking to doctors). Once my daughter had to be taken to a hospital in an ambulance, which was very traumatic for her and me, I don't think I ever referred to her as my 'child.' Just 'my daughter' and her name. Child sounds formal and like you are trying to distance yourself. No wonder people at the scene said they thought Harris was acting. It seems like they might have just been picking up intuitively on some of the oddities.

It would have come from the child or a scratch being made while the child was alive and then not healing or scabbing over or anything after that, soon after he passed away.” There were also abrasions to the back of the boy’s head, according to Stoddard.

During the day, Harris was having conversations with up to six different women, according to Stoddard, who said explicit photos were being exchanged.

“We’ve only scratched the surface,” said Stoddard in regards to the searches done on Harris’ computers.

2:11 p.m. ET: Harris' wife told police the pair were having intimacy issues, according to Stoddard. There are texts to indicate that she knew he was cheating on her.

"We plan to show that he wanted to live a child-free life," the prosecution tells the judge.

Ugh. Harris sent a picture of...well.... 'himself' to a SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL while his son was in the car.

He was having conversations with at least 6 women that day.

2:16 p.m. ET: One of the girls he was texting with asked him, “Do you have a conscience?” and he responded, “Nope.”

2:17 p.m. ET: The couple had a $25,000 life insurance policy on their son. Harris’ wife “was complaining about his purchasing, sporadic purchasing or overcharging credit cards.”

I think Leanna Harris knew Ross Harris was going to do what he did. This quote from the hearing makes me think she knew it.

1:59 p.m. ET: Leanna Harris, the mom, went to pick up Cooper from daycare that day. They told her he was never dropped off. On her way out, she told witnesses: “Ross must have left him in the car… there’s no other explanation. Ross must have left him in the car.” Stoddard says they tried to console her but “She’s like, ‘No.’”

He told Leanna that he 'Dreaded how he would look.'

I'm shocked she hasn't been arrested yet.

2:20 p.m. ET: Harris visited a subreddit about “people who die,” which shows videos of people dying (suicide, executions, war, etc.)

He also visited a subreddit called child-free: “They advocate not having any more children and adding to the biomass I guess is the best way they put it,” Stoddard said.

Harris also searched “how to survive in prison” and “age of consent for Georgia.”

When Stoddard told him they were charging him, Harris allegedly responded by saying, “but there’s no malicious intent.”

I agree Rachael, I'm surprised she hasn't been arrested and charged with him.

They knew they were breaking up and life was going to be easier without Cooper...ans with the insurance money. :(

I wonder how all those people who applauded a baby's murderer at this baby's funeral feel about their horrible selves now.

I wonder if Leanna knew Ross was going to murder Cooper but let it happen so Ross would go to jail...she would have the insurance money and no Ross plus no Cooper she would have to tend to "over and over and over".

I know this is only me imagining the 'why' to this, but it is so hard to understand how this couple did such a horrible thing to their baby.

When I read the things the hearing has brought to light about Ross Harris, it makes Leanne's statements at Cooper's funeral all the odder.

3:09 p.m. ET: Harris' wife "is still attentive during this questioning. She is also chewing gum." -- HLN producer Natisha Lance

3:15 p.m. ET: The couple bought a forward-facing car seat a few weeks before their son's death but the mom had it in her car at the time. The detective earlier testified that Cooper had outgrown the limits on the rear-facing car seat he was in when he died.

Why would he deny something he hasn't been accused of?

^^^^^^
Jen, Perhaps you are unaware that I did ask him, more than once, in various ways so he could choose his mimic, and he never once denied, but instead he chose to attack me in a personal fashion with threats to cause my family pain and suffering for asking.

4:24 p.m. ET: “I found there’s probable cause for the two charges contained in the warrant,” Judge Frank Cox tells the court. They're now moving on to the bond part of the hearing.

4:36 p.m. ET: The judge has denied the defense’s request for bond. Harris is led out of the courtroom as everyone is dismissed.

Good.

Gee, you mean he didn't appreciate someone who knows a fraction of the case evidence, accusing him of murdering his own daughter?

AND, he attacked you in a personal fashion? (Kinda like what you've done to him every day on this blog!)

No offense, but what did you expect? He doesn't owe you a response, but I can't say I blame him for reacting.

Why not stop kicking the man while he's down, and wait for the evidence to come out at trial. Will you be as persistent in offering your apologies, as you have been with your criticisms, when and if, the evidence incriminates the Moorers?
