Statement Analysis: Penelope Cruz on Israel

Penelope Cruz is an actress.

Penelope Cruz signed a letter in which Israel was condemned for "genocide" against Hamas.  Then a public response ensued calling her anti-Semitic, she released the following statement.  90 minutes after the cease fire was announced, Hamas launched a rocket and kidnapped a soldier, of whom the President of the United States said that "they must release that soldier..."

Here is Cruz' statement:

"I don't want to be misunderstood on this important subject. I'm not an expert on the situation and I'm aware of the complexity of it. My only wish and intention in signing that group letter is the hope that there will be peace in both Israel and Gaza. I am hopeful all parties can agree to a cease fire and there are no more innocent victims on either side of the border. I wish for unity, and peace.... I believe in a civilization that can be capable of bringing the courage to have a world where humans can live side by side."

Here is the statement with emphasis added:

"I don't want to be misunderstood on this important subject. I'm not an expert on the situation and I'm aware of the complexity of it. My only wish and intention in signing that group letter is the hope that there will be peace in both Israel and Gaza. I am hopeful all parties can agree to a cease fire and there are no more innocent victims on either side of the border. I wish for unity, and peace.... I believe in a civilization that can be capable of bringing the courage to have a world where humans can live side by side.

What do you make of the statement, regardless of who wrote it?  Remember that the analysis is of the statement, not the author.

Don't want to be misunderstood.
This statement connects to her HOPE OF PEACE.

However, she signed with THAT group not knowing much about them. HOPEFUL ALL PARTIES....

The writer will sign anything if it sounds like it will attribute to a world no one has ever known.

I found the wording of "that group letter" to be interesting. In other words, it's not just "me" that believes in the letter I signed, but the entirety of the "group" as well. Kind of like using the word "we" in statement analysis.

She's trying to distance herself from the letter she signed. She knows she should of kept her mouth shut and kept her opinion to herself. Another actor trying to be politcal...

We note anything in the negative as sensitive. Being misunderstood sensitive to her?.

"This" is close, she is placing herself close to the subject. It is important.

I'm not an expert on the situation and I'm aware of the complexity of it.

Again we have something in the negative. This time it is linked to being an expert. Although she is aware of the complexity, she doesn't want to be portrayed as an expert, thus making it sensitive.

My only wish and intention in signing that group letter is the hope that there will be peace in both Israel and Gaza.

"That letter"

"That" is distancing language. Given that she has been accused of being "anti-Semitic", we can see why she uses distancing language. She doesn't want to be associated with that label/letter.

I believe in a civilization that can be capable of bringing the courage to have a world where humans can live side by side.

The word "believe", leaves room for doubt, and for others to "believe" different.

Order is important. Peace in Israel and Gaza, Isreal has to "make peace" first, then Gaza. Israel is responsible for the lack of peace.lOtherwise she would have stopped at there will be peace.

Where are you getting "make peace"? She says "be peace" in Israel and Gaza. If order is important, then she is saying there should "be peace" in Israel before Gaza.

I'll add I don't think she's saying "be peace...in Israel" first because it's what she believes, but because she's sensitive to the criticism she's received.

I think she's been attacked, and she's feeling defensive while trying to maintain poise.

it is super bizzare that to say anything about the conflict that isn't geared in favor of israel over palestine is called antisemetic.

since when is it voilence excuseable by any people???

shame on anybody who called somebody who wishes for less death an violence antisometic, shame on them,

nobody is exempt from criticism when they are killing innocent people.

I think that, especially as a public figure, she should research before signing her name to things and making statements on such critical, important matters. Hamas is a terrorist organization (NOT a humanitarian org, as Nancy Pelosi would like people to believe). Hamas has NO intention of ever being in peace. If (which it won't happen), they'd continue on to the next country, then the next one, and the next one, and so forth. There are already anti-Israeli protesters here, causing havoc. Anti-Israeli = pro-Hamas aka pro-terrorist. Hamas is intentionally hiding behind the women and children. THEY don't care about them. They are firings from locations where innocent people are. If Israel folds, what do you think will happen? There and yes, eventually here to if they aren't stopped? Israel is fighting terror(ists) right now, not only for themselves, but essentially for the FREE world.

I meant to say, if they conquered Israel (which it won't happen)...

Wow, do you know what Hamas is? Do you know who Israel is protecting themselves from and why?

If terrorist were firings missiles into US, do you think we should let them? Just lay down and let ALL of America and it's people go "extinct"? That is what is happening over there.

There would be peace in Israel if they weren't being attacked.

Israel should end up at the ICC for their war crimes and crimes against humanity. I would suggest that Americans try and get their news from sources other than the US so they aren't subjected to the never ending stream of Israeli/US propaganda. There is worldwide condemnations of Israel and the US as its supplier and enabler for a very good reason. Open your freaking eyes and mind.

What about Hamas? You too, think they're a humanitarian organization? You "side" with them? I have opened my eyes. The Obama Administration should be ashamed of themselves for condemning lsrael for defending themselves and their people, from terrorist.

God forbid, terrorist claim war on America. What is Obama and his Administration going to do?
