Sensitive Questions in Statement Analysis: The 80's Politicians

Politicians are long known for deception, particularly in the advent of modern media, Post WWII, when the personal lives of politicians began to be "in the cross hairs" of journalistic questions, though even at the time of President Kennedy, "indiscretions" were often covered up.  This was a similar pattern for professional athletes.

But for politicians, the key word is "trust."  They want "the public trust" that they will use the office to the betterment of the people, rather than self-interest.  It is a tall order.

One must begin with this premise, in light of scandal:

Is the politician asking me, a stranger, to trust him, when those closest to him, such as his wife and his children, cannot?

Recall the time when Gary Hart was seeking the highest office in the land.  This now seems rather "tame" but it still highlights the notion of the "sensitive question" in analysis.

When a question is avoided, the question itself, is sensitive.

It could be sensitive because:

1.  The subject did not hear the question

2.  The subject does not understand the question

3.  The subject does not want to answer the question because direct lying causes internal stress.

Often, context is the assistant to drawing a conclusion.

Gary Hart's campaign was about to be sunk by his relationship with Donna Hart.  Newspaper articles led to him being forced to subject himself to a television interview.

Everyone is aware of the "Monkey Business", the yacht which brought down the Presidential candidate, Gary Hart.  Donna Rice, the model who was with him on the yacht, was interviewed by Barbara Walters on "20/20".  The most interesting point was if Donna Rice had sexual relations with Gary Hart. Let's see the exchange, remembering the 80's.

ABC's "Nightline" transcript with Interviewer, Ted Koppel:

Interviewer: I told you, when I spoke to you some time ago, that I was going to ask you both questions. I'm going to ask the first one now. Did you have an affair with Miss Rice?

Remember that the host is not only seeking information but he has one eye on the audience.  He is publicly reminding Gary Hart that he has given him ample warning and time to prepare his answer.

Gary Hart: "Mr. Koppel, I was asked a question last spring, which I refused to answer and your clips showed that,  so it seems to me I have no choice but to answer the question that was asked me last spring, and I will do that.  If the question is in the 29 years of my marriage, including two public separations, have I been absolutely and totally faithful to my wife, I regret to say the answer is no.  But I also am never going to answer any specific questions about any individuals.  I have no privacy. My wife has privacy; and other innocent people have privacy. And I don't care what questions are asked me, I'm not going to answer them on any specific instance."

Did you notice that he begins with "Mr. Koppel" and not the more familiar "Ted"?  (we first must remember the use of the name).

"...and your clips showed that" not only reminds Koppel and his audience, but uses the distancing word "that" within it.

He has "no choice" but to answer the question and then uses the word "will" to tell us what "will" happen in the future.  Since he "will" answer it, we will wait for him to do so.

And we will wait...

and wait...

and wait.

Nope.  No answer.

Note that he avoids the question.

He seems to have heard the question and he seems to have understood it.

Hmm.

He said he is "never" going to answer the specific question.  He has a reason why he does not want to answer it.

Ted Koppel noted the answer and then Hart issued an apology to his children, but not his wife.

There was a time when the press did not cover such scandals, even while press in Europe was not so generous in covering these matters up.

The 80's.

When Gary Hart's name is mentioned, Donna Rice's name is right behind his.  He is not known for a lifetime of accomplishments.  He is known for the yacht and model scandal.

Question:

What would have happened had he told the truth and said how it was wrong, and it remains between himself and his family?

Would it have died out?

The press follows where there is a mystery, and some politicians and celebrities may actually use a scandal to heighten interest.  When a mystery is solved, the case is dropped.

Would he have been better off, looking back all these years, owning up?  Would he have been able to have moved on?

Anthony Wiener was deceptive and actually brought more media interest to himself with his goofy lie about his phone being hacked.  Carlos Danger invited interest.

MALIK DRUMMOND ~ ENDANGERED MISSING November 23, 2014 ~ UPDATED 12.10.2014

Malik Drummond

Date of Birth: June 3, 2012

Biracial (Black/White) Male

Height: 3’0” Weight: 40 lbs

Hair: Brown Eyes: Brown

Missing: November 23, 2014 From: Searcy, AR

NOTE: Some reports have claimed that Malik is autistic, however there is no medical documentation to support the claim what so ever.

Malik Drummond has to have one of the most glowing smiles I have ever seen. This little man stole my heart before I even knew his name. LTWH Family member, Brandy Boyles Bullock, advocated for Malik and asked me to post his case. Thank you Brandy for being Malik’s angel advocate.

November 23, 2014 is the day Malik disappeared into thin air according to his father and stepmother.

So how did this entire disaster begin?

On November 23, Malik’s father, Jeff Clifton, and stepmother, Lesley Clifton, reported that the little boy had just wandered off away from their home. Jeff Clifton was allegedly asleep in the house when Malik disappeared.

So here’s the thing, there are quite a few variances in the story depending what news article your reading, but this is the general idea. Clifton was asleep in the home, while Lesley was taking a bath herself. Lesley allegedly got out of the bath to check on supper which was cooking when she noticed Malik was not there.

When she asked Malik’s twin sister, Aryanna, where her brother was, the little girl pointed to the front door. The screen door was closed but the front door had been open. Jeff has stated that Malik has never been one to just walk out the door.
With Malik missing, a search was organized. The search launched was massive and included numerous agencies collaborating their efforts. Amongst the Searcy Police Department, were the FBI, the White County Sheriff’s Office, Arkansas Game and Fish, K9 Units, the NCMEC and hundreds of volunteers.

Searches included the use of search dogs and cadaver dogs, helicopters and divers. Nothing was left untouched, land in and around the city was covered, the search of buildings, dumpsters, homes, apartments, abandoned homes and buildings, parks, ponds, creeks, vehicles, manhole covers were removed and checked with cameras, and sewers and bodies of water. Cadaver dogs did pick up Malik’s scent down by Little Red River, however divers have not been able to locate any sign of the little man, and there have been no further discoveries in the search for Malik thus far.

Checkpoints were also another tool used by police, allowing them to question passing motorists asking if they had seen Malik. The vehicles which gave consent to police had their trunks searched and nothing was found. Everyone cooperated and stated that they will be watching for any information about the little boy. While these searches were being carried out, the investigation remained an active criminal one with police using tools such as lie detectors as part of their investigation, but they will not say who took the exams and what the results are.

Malik’s twin sister Aryanna seems to be taking the disappearance of her brother the hardest. Drummond says that the little girl will not speak to anyone regarding her brother.

She instead lowers her head and goes silent. Jeff Clifton had previously lost a son 10 years ago when the boy was struck by a vehicle after getting off of the school bus. Clifton says the memory of his son’s death is the nightmare haunting him once again.

Now the family has stated that they believe Malik was in fact taken by someone. “The main thing is for him to be home safe, it’s not to get anybody in trouble. The main thing is to just bring my son home,” stated Clifton.

Drummond echoed the belief saying “We think he was kidnapped, but we’re not sure. Worse comes to worst, that’s what we think.”

It is quickly looking like our worst thoughts may be close to reality.

Police have officially called off the search for Malik, stating investigators “cannot reasonably believe that the child is lost, or hiding waiting to be discovered anywhere near the area he could’ve travelled on his own”. Police Chief Jeremy Clark stated “While we are just as committed to finding Malik and the truth behind his disappearance, we’ve depleted the usefulness of volunteers to re-search areas that now must be cleared by trained personnel and experts who are focused on the only possible remaining scenarios.” He went on to say “I know there’s a lot of questions. There’s a lot of theories. There’s a lot of opinions. And, we have our own theories and our own opinions, just like everyone else. I assure you and the public that we are investigating every possible scenario that can be thought of and investigating it thoroughly.”

Police are not ruling out the possibility of foul play. In fact at this point in the investigation officials have said that various forms of foul play are “the only possible remaining scenarios.” Corporal Steven Hernandez stated “It’s discouraging, disappointing, but we’re going to continue to do whatever it takes at those point to resolve this and find Malik. There’s not one suspect, per se. Right now, we’re looking at everybody.

Police are staying pretty tight lipped, but I think we are very close to finding out what actually happened to Malik. Either way, we are going to be here to see this through to the end. Again, thank you so much Brandy for being Malik’s Angel Advocate!

SEARCY, AR - We have new details tonight into the investigation of what happened, hearing from the person who last saw Malik.

Josh Berry has the report live from where the search began Sunday night.

Malik's father's girlfriend who considers herself his step mom tells me she has been spending most of the last few days inside the police department answering questions about what happened.

She says she was told she didn't pass questions on the polygraph test.

Police however insist there is no suspect leaving more questions than answers for those trying to help.

"I've just been really stressing about it every night," says Christopher Branch.

Christopher Branch drove from Greers Ferry to help, he's one of several dozen volunteers Wednesday, the help cut in half.

But officials say there's no reason to give up, similar successful providing the hope.

"They've had to search for children for long periods of time and still find them alive," says Doug Baker, the Emergency Management Coordinator.

But some including Malik's family worry if he hasn't been found by now in this area, hes not here.

"Strange how you can't find a child after two days," says Branch.

Leaving other options on the table that police say aren't right now being considered.

"We haven't had any evidence or any indication that this was a kidnapping," sayas Corporal Steve Hernandez.

The only thing they do know is where he was last seen, inside his father's house on Sunday afternoon.

"Next thing we know he's not there. He walked off," says Steve Hernandez.

And no single person has been on their radar.

"Nothing at all that would say this person is a suspect in the disappearance of Malik," says Hernandez.

Searcy Police did confirm today that cadaver dogs have been used throughout this investigation.

Malik's father's truck was searched by the dogs just as they continue this investigation in hopes of finding Malik

Man questioned in death of Jessica Chambers released

PANOLA CO, MS (WMC) -

Thirty-one-year-old Derrick Turner says he was picked up Monday morning and was taken to the Panola County jail where he was questioned in the death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers.

"I was just called in for a situation I didn't know nothing about." Turner said he knew Chambers. "But I don't just know her like that because I'm way older than her. So I've seen her around at stores and everything, but I don't just know her like that."

Turner said he was not in Courtland, Mississippi when Chambers was discovered lying next to her car on fire. She died not long after she was found.

"They was just asking me did I know her or was I sleeping with her, you know," said Turner. "Like I said, I didn't know her like that."

Turner did know, "the times I was around her you know, she carried herself she was a good girl. She was a sweet girl so that's why I'm messed up about it, whatever happened to her, I hate it happened you know."

Turner said investigators never told him why he was being questioned in Jessica Chambers death.

From my OT.

Clifton was asleep in the home, while Lesley was taking a bath herself.

Is this alibi building ?

Now the family has stated that they believe Malik was in fact taken by someone. “The main thing is for him to be home safe, it’s not to get anybody in trouble. The main thing is to just bring my son home,” stated Clifton.

“The main thing is for him to be home safe, it’s not to get anybody in trouble."

Why would he not want whomever has allegedly taken him to "not" be in trouble. If my son/daughter was allegedly kidnapped, i would want the full force of the law to come down on the person/s.

"Malik's father's girlfriend who considers herself his step mom tells me she has been spending most of the last few days inside the police department answering questions about what happened.

She says she was told she didn't pass questions on the polygraph test.

Although this is not a direct quote from the Fathers Girlfriend. It is interest to note that they say "she didn't pass questions on the polygraph test. This suggest's that she passed some and failed on others. What did she fail on and what did she pass on ? If she a had passed the polygraph completely, i would expect them to say she passed, and not she "didn't pass questions"

Buckley said...

I agree I would want the kidnapper in jail, but to get him back, I would minimize that they would get in trouble in public statements to alleviate the kidnapper's fears of getting in trouble. We've heard media statements of parents of missing kids: "no questions asked" or "drop them off at a church." This seems akin to that. Notice she says "The main thing is..." Not "only." She's not ruling out "getting someone in trouble"; it's just not "the main thing." I'd agree- getting my son or daughter back would be more important than justice for the kidnapper.

Hi Buckley,

I've picked out a few things from your OT.

"I was just called in for a situation ,I didn't know nothing about." Turner said he knew Chambers. "But I don't just know her like that because I'm way older than her. So I've seen her around at stores and everything, but I don't just know her like that."

Here's another article that claims ge's not a suspect. There is a lot of sensitivity in his statements about his sleeping with her, though.

The mother of the 19-year-old Mississippi woman burned alive and left for dead says her daughter won't be at peace until her killer is caught. "She cannot rest," mom Lisa Chambers told NBC affiliate WMC of her daughter, Jessica, a popular former cheerleader. "She knows who did this. She has told who did this."

As the young woman lay dying on the side of a rural road last Saturday in her hometown of Courtland, firefighters at the scene say she was able to whisper to them. Officials at a news conference on Thursday wouldn't divulge what she told them.

Lisa Chambers said she has been unable to sleep, tormented by the idea that someone would have harmed her child so viciously. She said her daughter's spirit is with her. "I had a lady call and pray with me, and my dog started barking at the couch beside me, and it was a strange feeling. I knew it was Jessica," she said.

The family has set up a Facebook page, Justice for Jessica, to help find her killer. Friends are also soliciting online donations through a GoFundMe account as the family prepares to bury Jessica on Saturday.

Investigators, meanwhile, are combing through the South Panola High School graduate's phone records to determine whom she might have spoken with before her death. Surveillance footage recorded from a convenience store gas station before 6:30 p.m. local time Saturday shows Chambers waving to someone out of the camera's view. She walks over, and eventually returns to her car and drives off.

Firefighters found her car burning 90 minutes later on the side of a road. Her body was nearby. Family members say she had lighter fluid poured down her throat before she was knocked out and torched. Burns reportedly covered 98 percent of her body, and she died from her injuries at a hospital in Memphis.

At Thursday's news conference, authorities revealed that they were able to interview other people who saw Chambers after she left the gas station and before she was set on fire. District Attorney John Champion asked for other witnesses to come forward.

"There's just not a lot of street talk. It's making our job a lot more difficult," said Champion, adding, "This is a horrendous crime. This was a 19-year-old girl who was just beginning life. No one deserves to die this way — it doesn't matter who you are."

A 31-year-old man who knew Chambers had earlier been questioned, but he is not a suspect, prosecutors told NBC News. Derrick Turner told WMC on Wednesday that he knew Chambers as a "good girl." "She was a sweet girl so that's why I'm messed up about it, whatever happened to her," Turner said.

"I don't just know her like that"

"Like I said, I didn't know her like that."

Any word, sentence or phrase that is repeated is noted as sensitive, along with any thing that is said in the negative. Here we have both x 3.

Is this the reason he shows sensitivity in saying he "doesn't no her like that" Or is this just an innocent picture ?

OT Update:

Upbeat Cosby expects ‘black media’ to stay neutral

Bill Cosby broke his silence Friday, albeit briefly, to lecture the media on remaining “neutral” and to say that his wife is standing by him.
Reached at his Massachusetts home, the star declined to address the rape and sex abuse allegations from an ever-growing list of women that now includes supermodel Beverly Johnson.
Instead, Cosby, 77, said that the African-American media — for which this reporter often writes — should be impartial.

“Let me say this. I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that you have to go in with a neutral mind,” Cosby said.

The comedian, who is being represented by the Manhattan-based crisis-management company Hiltzik Strategies and attorneys Martin Singer and John B. Schmitt, said he has been advised not to talk to reporters about the ongoing allegations. More than two dozen women have publicly claimed that the “Fat Albert” creator drugged and raped them.
The allegations span at least four decades, beginning in the 1960s.
Johnson, who auditioned for the “The Cosby Show” in the 1980s, alleges that Cosby put drugs in her cappuccino after he invited her to his New York brownstone to rehearse lines for an episode on his hit NBC television show. While Johnson didn’t accuse Cosby of rape, she said she didn’t know what his intentions were after spiking her drink.
Cosby sounded upbeat on the phone, but said he couldn’t address the specific allegations.
He did, however, wax poetic when asked how his wife of more than a half-century, Camille Cosby, was holding up under the strain of the allegations.

“Love and the strength of womanhood,” he said. “Let me say it again, love and the strength of womanhood. And, you could reverse it, the strength of womanhood and love.”
Then Cosby cut off the conversation. “They don’t want me talking to the media,” he said

Buckley,
WOW!!There's a lot of stuff to read and pics and videos. So much is being said and the local police don't expect any arrests???WTF?! They say no one is talking, seems like the whole town is talking.

What is wrong with people? This is so hideous.

I'll speculate: jealous girls? Another idea:
On the page I read this morning on yahoo, was another article about the CIA waterboarding Middle Eaterners. The gas station owner was Yemeni. He posted on fb long before the police said anything, that she was forced to drink gas and it was poured in her nose, Sounds like waterboarding revenge? idk

Anonymous said...

local police are obviously standing down re: Jessica.

either they are paid off, under threat, or feel exposure themselves.

wow.

gas station owner clearly edited surveillance tape he showed reporters -- conspiracy of coverup.

just a guess from info so far: Jessica had been in relationship w/ young gang memner when she was 17. maybe she was doing crime with him - in any event - I think her dad broke it up - sent her to a kind of rehap and ran the boy out of town. maybe the boy gathered strength and returned to take revenge on both father and daughter by killing daughter. there's clearly gang stuff -- and seems also clear cops are getting paid off by gangs and are super corrupted. they may also fear for life of their own daughters if they talk.

just a guess. preliminary.

Presumably he doesn't expect the non black media to do the same.

He is going to play the race card.
