What we know: When someone is close to being killed by a car, the event is frightening and 'bodily close'. The language should reflect this.
The emotions should come in the 'after' portion of the
account, as it takes time to process them. The event should be affirmed by:
The Pronoun "I" as this is very personal, up close and singular;
Past Tense verbs, as it already happened when the statement is made.
CINCINNATI —A Muslim woman is speaking out after she says she was called a terrorist and almost run over by an angry man in Clifton Monday night.
Haneen Jasim, 22, said after a night of studying at the Starbucks on University Square, as she crossed the street, a man started honking, cursing and calling her a terrorist.
The University of Cincinnati pre-med student was wearing her hijab.
“Very upsetting, very scary. I'm very, very nervous for me, my friends, my family, I'm terrified to cross the street now."
Please note that it began without a pronoun. Statistically, this will reduce reliability.
Note "very" is used first once, and then twice.
"upsetting"
"very scary"
"very very nervous"
"terrified."
Please note that she has claimed to have almost been run over by a car and she is not "very nervous" for:
herself,
her friends
her family.
Then, she is "terrified" to cross the street.
But worse, Jasim said the man drove toward her and didn’t stop. She said three people walking in front of her grabbed her onto the sidewalk before the car could hurt her.
Please note the research of Mark McClish suggests that "3 is the liar's number" meaning that if a person is going to make up a number between 2 and 9, 3 shows up the most frequently in deceptive accounts. It is not conclusive, but just something to consider in the overall analysis.
There should now be three eye witnesses who will come forward as they were all personally involved.
“Within an instant he tried to run over me. If it wasn't for the three people in front of me, grabbing me onto the sidewalk, I would have been dead right there,” said Jasim.
Note the time, "within an instant" and note that the three here are "people", non-gender specific.
The man drove off, and Jasim said she didn't catch a license plate, While shaken and terrified, she wasn't sure what police could do.
Jasim reported the incident to the Council on American Islamic Relations, also known as CAIR.
There is no quote here, but the implication is "so, since, therefore, because" : She did not know what police would do so, instead, she called CAIR.
CAIR has links to the Muslim Brotherhood.

I didn't read the entire article, but I will say this about that: If she's so damned scared let her dress properly, according to our own manner of dress then she won't feel so damned uneasy. Might actually save her life too.

ReplyDeleteActually, I'm familiar with that Starbucks location up in Clifton. It's not well lighted in the outdoor seating café area. She wouldn't be able to sit out there and study all night. I don't believe the employees in this Starbucks would allow her to sit inside and study for too long at the time either. This is a very busy college area, they can't have students sitting for hours in their limited seating. She would politely be asked to move outdoors or leave. ABB

ReplyDeleteThere are some hijab-wearing students at my daughter's university. My understanding is that many Muslim women get to make the choice whether to wear a hijab or dress in Western attire. It's a matter of personal conviction, not a necessity under their specific interpretation of Islamic law.

'Something' could have happened but I don't believe it's anything like she said. That particular area is a cop-ticket and arrest warrant money maker. ReplyDeleteI don't believe anyone tried to deliberately run her over. It sounds like she went to cross the street and didn't look both ways. I would have asked if she was crossing at the corner or crosswalk if I had been the interviewer. I also don't see why it would take three people to pull her back onto the sidewalk. I wouldn't think someone with the intention of running over a pedestrian would honk their horn.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this incident was racially motivated. I think she is assigning motive and casting blame on an incident that she most likely created by not being 100% aware of her surroundings. She probably didn't call police because the near accident was partly her fault.

It's harder to 'take someone on faith' if they are using their faith "as a weapon." And as to recent events, we know this includes all faiths.

If this really happened, I would expect a University student to go to police, get it on a legal record, and THEN go to CAIR for support. And yes, I also understand that it is possible she was too afraid to go to legal authorities w/o religious and/or cultural support. That then leads to the question: Was she raised here or newly arrived?
Yes, I understand that as well. It's the specific interpretation of this gal in this incident that I would query in relation to her veracity along with the lack of veracity indicators in her statement in order to see if this is just an agenda-driven act or 'hoax.'

ReplyDeleteThere are cameras everywhere these days. They're at intersections and inside and outside of stores. Had she called the police they could have done plenty. If this happened at all, a more likely scenario is that she was jaywalking or crossing the street when the pedestrian crossing sign was red. The driver was caught by surprise, annoyed, perhaps yelled and honked at her. I believe her not.

Attorneys for the 14-year-old Muslim boy who was arrested after he took a homemade clock to school say he was publicly mistreated.
A 14-year-old Muslim boy who was arrested after a homemade clock he took to his school was mistaken for a bomb is seeking $15m, his attorneys say.
A law firm representing Ahmed Mohamed sent letters on Monday demanding $10m from the city of Irving, Texas, and $5m from the Irving Independent School District.
The attorneys, who also threatened to pursue legal action, said the teen deserves the money because he was publicly mistreated.
Ahmed took a homemade clock to his school in September to show a teacher, but another teacher thought it could be a bomb.
The school contacted police, who handcuffed the teenager.
Ahmed, the son of Sudanese immigrants, was suspended from school for three days.
In the wake of his story going viral, Ahmed received multiple job offers and visited the headquarters of Google and Facebook.
He even chatted with President Barack Obama while attending an Astronomy Night event at the White House in October.
Ahmed and his family have since moved to Qatar, where the family accepted a foundation's offer to pay for his high school and college in Doha.

- She doesn't say she's angry at the driver. I would if I was nearly killed by such a maniac;
- She does say she's nervous but using "very" twice weakens the assertion.
- Order. Friends come before family. Friends are more important to her than family?
- The use of the "liars number" three.
- "grabbing me" is present tense. This doesn't come from experential memory.
- She claims she's afraid for herself, her friends and family, yet she decides not to call police but CAIR instead. I think it's her aim to lighten up the anti islam discussion.
PLEASE can someone on here (Peter, Jen Ow, etc) PLEASE look at the case in MA that has gone international about the babysitter who allegedly kidnapped the 2 year old girl, shaved her head, burned her with cigarettes and then left her on the side of the road. The babysitter allegedly was able to break into the house in a 4 hour time window between 3am (liar's number and 7 am) and kidnap the baby without being heard. I am convinced she did not do it. I am convinced one of the parent's did it. The terrible things that were done to the baby seem to have been done for shock value and then the baby was left by the side of the road during morning rush hour where someone would definitely find her and they did at 10 am. The parent's have released a statement, not sure how much help it is, but I believe the babysitter has been framed. I will post link as well as parent's statement.

I'm not sure if I believe her or not. Is English her first language? If not, that could have some bearing on the words she used. The THREE people who saved her from certain death? I'm going to assume one would make sure they had the the names and telephone numbers of those who saved their life, right? If not, why not? Wouldn't you want these heroes to be recognized? Wouldn't you want to stay in touch with them? In addition, the people who saved her life may have pertinent information about what happened and what they saw to assist law enforcement in their investigation.

The parents' statement - 'we have suffered an horrific ordeal' - yet they don't say the baby has suffered an horrific ordeal - or anything about the baby, her condition, how she is doing. It's a bit cold. Lots of 'extremely'. I'd be raging - they don't sound raging.

Her description of how she felt seemed believable enough - I'd say she walked into the path of a car and got honked and shouted at by the driver. Why didn't she call the police? - maybe she was in the wrong, crossing the road where she should not. She thought to embellish it - don't know, someone might have called her a name if she gave them a fright - if someone had deliberately driven at her to run her over she would have called the police, surely.

ReplyDeleteI believe with every fiber of my being they did this to their own child. I haven't heard anything that they have on the babysitter, any evidence, anything pointing to her doing it, anything indicating evidence of breaking and entering although she is being charged with that.
They also say they last checked on the toddler at 3 am (liar's number).
I wonder if the babysitter even smokes as the toddler had cigarette burns on her.
I feel like the shaving of the head was done for shock value.
I am thinking Charlie Rogers here, although in no way am I saying the toddler harmed herself, I am saying I think one of the parents did those things to their own child for attention and that they are framing the former babysitter.

One year ago Monday, Malik Drummond, 3, disappeared from his Searcy home.
Family members tell Channel 7 News they are still in disbelief that the toddler seemed to just disappear in broad site.
On November 23, 2014, Malik and his twin sister Aryanna were staying at their father's home in the 700 block of West Park Avenue.
Searcy police received a call at 6:30 p.m. after Malik's family and father, Jeff Clifton, realized about 45 minutes earlier he was missing.
Not long after, police issued a level two Morgan Nick Amber Alert. Search crews formed and air support was implemented.
On that Tuesday, the search area was expanded into three more neighborhoods. Tracking and cadaver dogs also joined the search.
Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, after receiving a tip, authorities lowered a camera into a storm drain, but didn't find anything. The next day, another tip led police to a field in search of a pair of children's shoes, but nothing was found there.
Clifton's neighbor, Taquanda Haerrell, said although it has been a year, there doesn't seem to have been much progress made.
"We haven't heard anything and that is what makes it so sad. Not to know anything after a whole year. To not come up with a lead or anything, that is sad," Haerrell said.
When Malik initially went missing, hundreds of people flocked to Searcy to help find the missing boy.
His parents, Tanya Drummond and Jeff Clifton, told Channel 7 News their number one priority was to find their son.
"I don't know if he's out there sick, or if he fell or [is] hurt. I'm just scared. I really want him home," Drummond said.
"The main thing is for him to be home safe, it's not to get anybody in trouble. The main thing is to just bring my son home," Clifton said.
Malik's twin sister, Aryanna, now stays with their grandmother, Nancy Payne.
"Want to know, everybody wants to know what happened to Malik," Payne said. "A day doesn't go by without me thinking about him. Ary does too, she talks about Malik all the time. Everyday, 'I miss my bubba'."
As time passes, Payne says her granddaughter's curiosity is sparking her own
"She has been saying stuff that really makes me think," Payne said.
Now the FBI is offering a $20,000 reward to anyone who can lead them to Malik. Searcy Police Sergeant Steve Hernandez said authorities are still actively searching.
"We have developed some information to believe somebody does know something. We feel like this $20,000 reward will spark that person to come forward with this information," Sgt. Hernandez said. "We haven't counted out foul play obviously, this is a criminal investigation. What a lot of people don't realize is the investigation never went cold. We just might not have put the investigation out there for everybody of what we are doing."
Payne said she believes Malik is still alive.
"I believe Malik is out there. He is out there somewhere. Somebody has got him. Somebody is taking care of Malik and they just ain't coming forward," Payne said. "I just want Malik home. Whoever has Malik, I wish you'd all bring him home to his family, because it is getting to be the holidays. It is rough for us it really is."
