Tamica Cross: Pop Quiz

https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-1/p50x50/14068080_637594726405551_5849677146669658372_n.jpg?oh=98547c77b20e6f68411975269cd25237&oe=5898589C

In our last 'pop quiz', the subject was truthful.

He was taken out by police in his pajamas and the word "we" entered his language because he had many years to process the traumatic event:  in hindsight, the police were 'unified' with him, in his mind, because on the drive home, they joked with him.

Once he reached home, he argued with his mother about having to leave, trying to convince her that all was well; but his mother's fears (later justified) prevailed and he left his country.

Here is another 'pop quiz':

Tamica Cross claims she was discriminated against by Delta airlines and not permitted to assist a passenger.

Is she telling the truth?

Or, is this another "fake hate"?

If "fake hate", is motive in the language?

In seeking a motive in analysis, we do not do guess work; if it is not in the language, for us, it does not exist.

There are various motives for false reporting including:

a.  Narcissism and need for attention
b.  Financial exploitation
c.  Political narrative (wide application)

This was posted on a news site from FB.

Tamika Cross

I'm sure many of my fellow young, corporate America working women of color can all understand my frustration when I say I'm sick of being disrespected.
Was on Delta flight DL945 and someone 2 rows in front of me was screaming for help. Her husband was unresponsive. I naturally jumped into Doctor mode as no one else was getting up. Unbuckle my seatbelt and throw my tray table up and as I'm about to stand up, flight attendant says "everyone stay calm, it's just a night terror,...
A couple mins later he is unresponsive again and the flight attendant yells "call overhead for a physician on board". I raised my hand to grab her attention. She said to me "oh no sweetie put ur hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel, we don't have time to talk to you" I tried to inform her that I was a physician but I was continually cut off by condescending remarks.
Then overhead they paged "any physician on board please press your button". I stare at her as I go to press my button. She said "oh wow you're an actual physician?" I reply yes. She said "let me see your credentials. What type of Doctor are you? Where do you work? Why were you in Detroit?" (Please remember this man is still in need of help and she is blocking my row from even standing up while
Bombarding me with questions).
I respond "OBGYN, work in Houston, in Detroit for a wedding, but believe it or not they DO HAVE doctors in Detroit. Now excuse me so I can help the man in need". Another "seasoned" white male approaches the row and says he is a physician as well. She says to me "thanks for your help but he can help us, and he has his credentials". (Mind you he hasn't shown anything to her. Just showed up and fit the "description of a doctor") I stay seated. Mind blown. Blood boiling. (Man is responding the his questions and is seemingly better now Thank God)
Then this heifer has the nerve to ask for my input on what to do next about 10 mins later. I tell her we need vitals and blood sugar. She comes back to report to me a BP of 80/50 (super low, to my non medical peeps) and they can't find a glucometer. We continue down that pathway of medical work up, but the point is she needed my help and I continued to help despite the choice words I had saved up for her. The patient and his wife weren't the problem, they needed help and we were mid flight.
She came and apologized to me several times and offering me skymiles. I kindly refused. This is going higher than her. I don't want skymiles in exchange for blatant discrimination. Whether this was race, age, gender discrimination, it's not right. She will not get away with this....and I will still get my skymiles....

I believe her account. I am hardly even a novice at this, but I am not able to detect any indicators of deceit. Plus, I'm sure she had multiple witnesses around her who heard everything that happened.

Dripping with deception...

Several statements lack the pronoun "I"
ex: "was on Delta..."; "Unbuckle my seatbelt..." "Mind blown" "Blood boiling"

Statement starts with the need to persuade, and receive compassion and support by other frustrated "working women of color".

The statement jumps into the present tense at times.
ex: "...throw my tray table..."; "I stare at her as I..."; "I reply..."; "I respond..."; "I stay seated"; "I tell her... She comes..."

Embedded confession - or outright lie...
"I don't want skymiles in exchange for blatant discrimination." but then...
"...and I will still get my skymiles..."

This part does not add up ('behavioral analysis'). The first time the medical professional gets up to go help, but then sits down because of the 'diagnosis' of the flight attendant. Then she waits a couple of minutes, and after the patient gets unresponsive again, and after the flight attendant yells, she waits and just raises her hand. One would expect from a medical professional a certain 'medical professional attitude', that I expect a lot of experienced doctors have. They would get right to the point and not wait for the flight attendant to ask anything. They would have already been there helping the patient with a sort of commanding medical authority attitude.

I have a question: Why arent the accusations that Bill Clinton has literally forcibly raped people getting a reaction of outrage from the public? How about the fact he ditched secret service agents to fly to a pedophile billionaire's "Lolita Island" and allegedly raped a 13 year old girl?

Anonymous said...

People are outraged, Anonymous. I am. Bill Clinton's been pulling this behavior for years with no consequences. Donald Trump has also been accused of raping a 13-year old, and he is actually running for office. I am seeing ZERO outrage on here about that--just a lot of people saying he is being framed although the comments he has made on the record OUT OF HIS OWN MOUTH demonstrate that sexual assault is a routine thing for him. Peter won't even touch his comments, not even to clear him (he knows he can't) and him usually so against predators.

Trump has said he could shoot people in the street and people would still vote for him. AND HE IS RIGHT. He could also rape those people in the street, with an audience, before shooting them, and people would say it was Hillary's campaign manager. And if he gave a full-page statement about it, well, you'd never see it analyzed here. GO FIGURE.

I am so frustrated with the choices we have for President. But maybe we deserve them.

Anonymous said...

I watched a video of one woman accusing Bill of rape and it was reliable.
Bill also flew 40 times to a billionaire pedophile's Lolita Island.
Bill is scum. Hillary is scum.
Hillary used evil (and probably illegal) maneuvers to defend a child rapist.
Hillary has said a baby a few hours before birth has no Constitutional rights.
At this point after having researched the Clintons it wouldnt surprise me if they were making up some of the stuff about Trump.
I dont care if Bill's not the one running for office...Hillary disrespects the American people by trying to get his ass back in the White House. You watch as she gives him a position of power most probably in the U.N.

I'm still analyzing the statement, but two things strike me. The first is she switches back and forth in tense. The 2nd - she uses "we"
Here is the section: "Then this heifer has the nerve to ask for my input on what to do next about 10 mins later. I tell her we need vitals and blood sugar. She comes back to report to me a BP of 80/50 (super low, to my non medical peeps) and they can't find a glucometer. We continue down that pathway of medical work up"

We implies unity, but here she is saying that she is not working with the flight attendant.

I think Tamika Cross is not telling it as it was; she hesitated in offering assistance - 'naturally jumped into Doctor mode' does not sound as if it was natural - she says she went into doctor mode only when it became apparent that no-one else was getting up, she therefore must have waited a little while to see if there was another doctor on board, and so had not 'jumped' into doctor mode.

I think the dropped pronouns are to create a sense of urgency in the story, maybe also decrease her commitment to having (really) 'naturally jumped into doctor mode' - because she did not - there was no urgency to act, she did not get up from her seat.

This is a long speech to have remembered word for word, so that's likely not quite what was said:
"oh no sweetie put ur hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel, we don't have time to talk to you"

TC had motioned as if to get out of her seat initially, but did not. She did not say at that point that she was a doctor. The flight attendant was likely to have assumed she was about to take a bathroom break but had decided to wait in order to keep the aisle free so the attendant and any doctor or nurse could have access to the sick passenger two rows in front of her. The attendant most likely asked people to remain seated while they looked for medical assistance, and as TC had not identified herself at that time, it seems likely it was a misunderstanding - the flight attendant did not know TC was a doctor as she did not readily identify herself as such - even when she raised her hand, she did not say why she was raising it. TC goes on to say she 'tried' to tell the attendant she was a doctor - it's just four words, 'I am a doctor' - yet she did not say them.

I think the attendant preferred the white male doctor because TC remained in her seat, possibly prevaricating once she had let on she was a doctor (with skymiles in mind), while he was the one who, once the announcement was made, actually got up and went to the patient and introduced himself as a doctor, previous to which the medical situation had probably been unknown to those further up or/and down the plane. That TC emphasises that there was screaming and yelling, but that the flight attendant also seems to have had time to engage her in social chitchat, makes me think there was probably not much actual 'screaming' and 'yelling', and only those in the surrounding rows were aware there was a problem, until the announcement.

I think TC is a bit of a drama queen, she saw an opportunity to turn someone's crisis into her own drama, and took it. She appears to have become genuinely helpful only once she was satisfied she had been discriminated against, had a horror story to relate to 'fellow young, corporate America working women of color', and a good case for free skymiles - also there was another doctor on board, so it was expedient and diplomatic for the flight attendant and doctors all to work together, or appear to, at least - the male doctor may have felt bad when he found out she had (possibly) been about to help, and so included her and asked for her opinion - interesting how he disappears from the story though - it's the flight attendant who needs her help, and I am not sure who the 'we' are - I assume it is the other doctor, also, consulting with her through the flight attendant.
.
Attention seeking, opportunistic agenda, IMO. TC didn't greatly want to help, or to identify herself as a doctor, and the reluctance was in order to later be able to claim discrimination, have a story to tell, and some free skymiles. Also to let people know she was, of course, the better doctor, in her own opinion.

Anonymous and Anonymous,

I read right after the second debate that the Clinton camp was going to create two narratives. The first would a narrative to deflect BC's choice of friends (throw the mud at Trump, first, to take the wind out of those sails because if Trump went to the $800M settlement, etc., on live TV, he would talk about the company BC keeps, hence 13 y/o story) and, 2) create a Bill Cosby-like narrative. There was also the faux lawsuit that was launched last June, all debunked, but it looks like it will be resurrected and pursued in keeping with this week's reporting.

Both Trump and Pence said information to refute the allegations are forthcoming. What Trump said is indisputable. I can't help but wonder, was there a set-up when Anderson Cooper asked Trump if he did those things and Trump said, "No." There is evidence that the TownHall was scripted. So... is this a set-up? Pundits all say that people really start tuning in the last two to three weeks of an election, it's the reason a lot of voters won't vote in the advance polls. This is when "things" come to light (Trump's comment about isn't it strange that all this is coming out now.)

I went onto Clinton's FB page and noticed that, again, she is not on the campaign trail. But B&M Obama are. They are all over her FB page, that and a ton of MO quotes from her speech in a half-filled gymnasium (note everyone was piled up in the bleachers against one side of the gym). Has any other sitting president *and* wife ever campaigned for another candidate before? Anyway, any "pictures" of Clinton are cartoon-esque depicting a *very* healthy HRC. Why are there cartoons instead of her bounding up stairs, smiling and waving from the podium? My point being is that there are lot of balloons being launched and they are all so very interesting, but their purpose is to keep everyone distracted from the real issue.

Clinton is MIA!!!!!

The Wall Street Journal just published an scathing article against MSM and what nobody is talking about:
The Press Buries Hillary Clinton’s Sins

If you can't read it (maybe you need a subscription) you can access snippets of it here:

'We continue down the pathway of medical work up' - that pathway was a bit further down the aisle - TC did not leave her seat. Well, she did not, by her own words, actually offer assistance in the first instance - she did not say she was a doctor - then she 'tried' to say she was a doctor. What ailed her? By the time it was known she was a doctor, the other doctor was beside the patient offering assistance. TC was consulted - so it is not true that she was not permitted to offer assistance.

Unbuckle my seatbelt and throw my tray table up and as I'm about to stand up, flight attendant says "everyone stay calm, it's just a night terror,…

Dropped pronoun
Delta flight DL945 - Tamika can identify the flight number and location of “someone", but she does not identify herself (I) or who “someone” was (he, a woman)
screaming for help - emergency, urgent situation
naturally - persuading
jumped - illustrates action
Doctor-mode - Doctor is capitalized, important, strong,
mode - Tamika identifies a mode, highlighting there are other “modes” she jumps into

no one else was getting up
passive language contradicts “jump”
Tamika implies she looked around, first, before she “jumped” into doctor mode

Unbuckle my seatbelt and throw my tray table up
dropped pronoun
throw - as opposed to put my tray table up, aggression, frustration

as I’m about to stand up
about - not yet standing up

flight attendant says “everyone stay calm, it’s just a night terror…
flight attendant - Tamika drops “the” in front of flight attendance, she does not assign importance/authority to the attendant
everyone - Tamika lumps herself in with the rest of the passengers
just - dependent word, another situation in play

"Corporate" is an odd choice of words; does that mean she considers herself, as a health professional, to be an "entrepreneur"?

A couple mins later he is unresponsive again and the flight attendant yells "call overhead for a physician on board". I raised my hand to grab her attention. She said to me "oh no sweetie put ur hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel, we don't have time to talk to you" I tried to inform her that I was a physician but I was continually cut off by condescending remarks.

The flight attendant yells "call overhead for a physician on board". I raised my hand to grab her attention
grab her attention - did she grab the attendant?
Tamika does not say she raised her hand and identified herself as a doctor, she only raised her hand to grab

Then overhead they paged "any physician on board please press your button". I stare at her as I go to press my button. She said "oh wow you're an actual physician?" I reply yes. She said "let me see your credentials. What type of Doctor are you? Where do you work? Why were you in Detroit?" (Please remember this man is still in need of help and she is blocking my row from even standing up while Bombarding me with questions).

I stare - Tamika stares, she does not say anything
Tamika goes to press “my” button, but she does not press her button, she stares

She said, “Oh wow you’re an actual physician?” I reply yes.
actual is comparing to something else, such as a passenger,
reply - is responding to a question asked, Tamika does not initiate the conversation, she only identifies as a doctor when she is asked

Dropped pronouns, staccato type speech similar to the way you hear doctors bark orders when there is an emergency, persuading authority
So I can help the man in need - passive, Tamika puts herself before the man in need, (the man needs help!)
“seasoned” - senior, experienced, “old"
white male - order is important
says he’s a physician as well - he self identifies
and he has his credentials - (and) missing information, did Tamika say she did not have her credentials, but the other doctor did?
Just showed up - just is a dependent word to there being another doctor who might not have had her credentials

I stay seated. Mind blown. Blood boiling.
stay seated - posture, Tamika has not gotten out of her seat
dropped pronouns

(Man is responding the his questions and is seemingly better now Thank God)
his - his does not have a title

heifer /nerve to ask/tell her/report to me/- disparagement, the attendant has lost her respect
they can’t - incapable
we continue - unity
but, negates the unity, what follows is what is important/the point
she needed my help - she is subordinate

She came and apologized to me several times and offering me skymiles. I kindly refused. This is going higher than her. I don't want skymiles in exchange for blatant discrimination. Whether this was race, age, gender discrimination, it's not right. She will not get away with this....and I will still get my skymiles….

She came and apologized to me - distancing, a lot of wording to say she apologized to me
offering me sky miles - change in verb tense, change in reality
kindly - persuading, contradicts “mind blown, blood boiling”
don’t want - what is stated in the negative is important to Tamika
blatant discrimination - words that are injected into the story that have not appeared anywhere beforehand
race, age, gender - order is important

still get my sky miles - were a request for sky miles declined?

I don't believe Tamika was discriminated against. My analysis tells me that she didn't make much of an effort to identify "who she was" in the first place. Her passive behaviour made it "easy" for someone else to "jump in" to "doctor-mode".

Hey Jude said...

Hmm, I filled in the gaps (again) with what I thought likely happened - it does not matter what I think the flight attendant might have been thinking, or why the other doctor got up when he did - trying to work out what happened 'off camera', so to speak, isn't the exercise. I find it difficult to keep only to the subject's words, and to be impartial - as in I should not say she is a drama queen thinking of skymiles, even if I think it. She maybe wasn't thinking of skymiles till after all that happened, anyway. :-/

How was the patient not the problem? He was not the priority, or main problem, to her thinking. If she was in doctor mode, I would expect her to consider that the sick man was the only real problem. (Now I'm being judgemental - or maybe that is a reasonable observation, IDK.)

As a victim of early-childhood sexual abuse, all through my life I was targeted by men who knew somehow they could take advantage of me. I always felt it was my fault, and always wondering why I was such a huge loser. Since when are healers part of corporate america? I think the event happened but the other Dr was closer to the patient and got there first. I think the flight attendant may have said some of what she was quoted as saying but the writer of the statement won't quote what offensive phrases were making me think there was none, just the questioning of the credentials. Another thing tha doesn't make sense is why would the sstewardess be asking her for medical directions or advice if there was a dr already looking after the patient?
She's after more than sky miles and money, this woman is jumping on the bandwagon.

I escaped an attempted rape while also being held against my will in a car by using the spitting trick: accumulate saliva in mouth for 2-3 minutes and then spit in rapist's face. I escaped and was pretty much mentally unscathed until A WOMAN BLAMED ME BC I HAD GOTTEN INTO THE CAR WITH SOMEONE I DIDNT KNOW TO GET A RIDE TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION WHERE MY FRIENDS WERE, EVEN AFTER I EXPLAINED TO HER THAT I HAD THOUGHT I COULD TRUST HIM BC HE WAS FRIENDS WITH A COP. I WAS NOT TRAUMATIZED BY THE KIDNAPPING, FLASHING OR THREATS OF RAPE...I WAS TRAUMATIZED BY BEING BLAMED FOR WHAT HAPPENED BY A WOMAN.

Anonymous said...

Anon, It's true, women can be awful to women. The fact of the matter was I thought this guy was just giving me a ride from point A to point B (where my friends were). As soon as he started driving he turned psycho, very scary and freaky, he was actively flashing me while stating he was going to rape me (in more explicit and violent terms). He stated he was driving to find a place to rape me. However, I became very calm and my mind quickly thought of a plan: I began accumulating saliva in my mouth for approximately 2-3 minutes. When he pulled over in a deserted spot to begin raping I spit a massive amount of saliva in his face and unlocked the car door and ran. I then ran to the spot where my friends were and when I told them what had just happened to me, one of my "friends" blamed me for going in the car with him, reversing roles as if he had a right to rape me and I didnt have a right to defend myself?! That was more disgusting and hurtful to me than the attempted attack in the car. You would be surprised how many women think men are entitled to rape and women should not complain or defend themselves.

Anonymous said...

And yet when I told a male friend what had happened, he thought the guy was an a-hole and thought it was awesome I defended myself. How weird is that? A woman blamed me for almost getting raped but a guy was on my side. And looking back, the attempted raper was a scary SOB...like really scary! Im sure he has raped others, as he was very psycho. Im lucky I got away from him. It was because I stayed calm, almost disasociated and thought of a plan very quickly.

This reads to me like a story that should start with the prologue that it is LOOSELY (very loosely) based on actual events, and some of the characters and dialogue have been fictionalized for dramatic flare.

The patient was only 2 rows in front of Dr. Cross. What's that, 3 feet? All of this posturing about what she tries to do, what she wants to do, what she is restricted from doing, and the man is within her reach the entire time. She has all of this drama swirling for long enough that another doctor was able to push his button, be recognized, called over, and arrives on the scene faster than she can move up 2 rows?

I don't know what she looks like, but she says herself in the first sentence she's young. Could it be that the "heifer" (very professional and mature, by the way, especially when you are complaining of being discriminated against) thought she looked too young to be a doctor?

Most importantly, the sentence, "Oh no sweetie put ur hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel, we don't have time to talk to you," is just an outright lie. If the heifer is the ageist or sexist Dr. Cross describes, when she raised her hand, why wouldn't the flight attendant just automatically assume she's a nurse? Nurses aren't unicorns, it wouldn't be so unusual to see one on a plane. This sentence implies that the flight attendant psychically knew that she wasn't a doctor, nurse, paramedic, physician's assistant, medic, et cetera. Ridiculous.

If she is deceptive, what does her words suggest that she did?

She was offended that the flight attendant disregarded her at first, preferring the white male doctor over her. She helped when asked later in the flight, despite her offense.

If you read Dr. Cross' words here carefully, a story emerges of a medical professional being unresponsive to a medical emergency.

Even though the ailing passenger (& his wife screaming for help) were only 2 rows ahead of her, Dr. Cross never actually stood up.

Dr. Cross says she observed that no one else was getting up, so that was when she decided to get ready to stand up but, before she could actually stand up, she was stopped by an announcement that the patient is fine now.

At this point, there's some time that goes by ("a couple minutes"), during which Dr. Cross does not attempt to notify staff that she is a medical doctor.

When the patient again needs help, staff requests an announcement asking for medical help, which tells us that up to this point in the situation, no one (including Dr. Cross) has come forward as a medical professional.

Here in the story, Dr. Cross says she raised her hand and the flight attendant was close enough to speak to her & say no put you hand down we need a medical professional.

Ds. Cross' description here says she really wanted to tell the flight attendant she is a doctor, but wasn't able to do so, due to the attendants persistant interrupting/cutting her off.

"I'm a doctor!" is not a difficult or lengthy sentence. "I'm a doctor!" It can be said loudly, quickly, and clearly, even if others are talking at the same time.

But, Dr. Cross did not say it.

Next in the story, there is finally an overhead announcement requesting if there's a doctor in the house.

Finally, FINALLY, Dr. Cross identifies herself to staff as a doctor.

The understandably skeptical attendant has a few questions.

I don't believe that TC was ever involved with helping through the incident. The only thing she did was offer FROM HER SEAT that the man needed "vitals and blood sugar".

"I naturally jumped into Doctor mode as no one else was getting up."
By adding the unnecessary "naturally", she tells us it was anything but natural to her.
"As" is the same as "so". She feels the need to explain. She only was going to respond because no one else was.

Pronouns are missing on "unbuckle my seatbelt" and "and throw my tray table up." Thus she does not commit to these actions. Then she says "I'm ABOUT to stand up..." telling us she did not stand up. She did not identify herself as a physician, nor offer help in this part.

When the attendant yells (present tense, thus not reliable), she states "I raised my hand to grab her attention." Again, she does not identify her self as a physician.

"I TRIED to inform her that I was a physician..." Tried does not mean she succeeded. Rather than "she cut me off", she uses passive "I was continually cut off by condescending remarks." With any adverb (continually), look for missing info. And by using passive, she does not say who is keeping her from saying she is a physician. Again, she has not identified herself or left her seat.

When they paged for a physician, she said, "I stared at her as I GO TO press my button." She commits to staring, but not pressing her button.

With her response, "OBGYN, work in Houston, in Detroit for a wedding, but believe it or not they DO HAVE doctors in Detroit." I believe she may be from Detroit and is working in Houston.

"I stay seated." Yep. She has not left her seat. She has not identified herself as a physician nor shown her credentials. She has not helped the man in need.

In the next paragraph, the pronoun changes to "we." "WE need vitals and blood sugar." But, "She COMES BACK to report to me..." "WE continue ...."

"Despite the choice words I had saved up for her." She was pitching a fit so the attendant asked her what she thought needed done now. TC never left her seat, and never helped...until she realized there were skymiles involved.

Carnival Barker, thanks for the compliment but you had already said it (and with less words) in your second paragraph at 7:28 AM! You said:

"All of this posturing about what she tries to do, what she wants to do, what she is restricted from doing, and the man is within her reach the entire time. She has all of this drama swirling for long enough that another doctor was able to push his button, be recognized, called over, and arrives on the scene faster than she can move up 2 rows?"

Yeh exactly! And I wouldn't blame her for being hesitant - I think she is a 4th year resident at a hospital and doesn't yet have all her credentials or whatever. So, I would understand her sitting there hoping someone else might come forward, but to then turn it around into an attack against the airline and the flight attendant - I don't like it.

Unknown said...

Let's hope the reason why she didn't want to help is because she doesn't have all her credentials. I shudder to think of some of the other possibilities.

Some people shouldn't be doctors, no matter how smart they may be.

Peter asked what her motives might be, and I think they're twofold. She wants to be compensated via stimulus, public apology, groveling, etc., and she wants to feel comforted by sympathy from strangers.

I've noticed that this is a tendency from people who have a victim mentality and who feel a sense of entitlement because of it, especially when it's mixed with a childhood of a lack of warmth, compassion and nurturing.

Not stimulus, skymiles. It's the stupid autocorrect.

I don't think the flight attendant said, 'We don't have time to talk to you'. Maybe, if she thought she was wanting to ask for snacks, or something, she might have, but I still think not, as it would be a bit too personal, the 'to you' - she would have spoken more professionally. TC implies the flight attendant spoke for all the crew, suggesting they would all have responded in the manner claimed, having no time to talk to her.

I am wondering if saying 'we' there, rather than 'I', makes it seem less untruthful to her, as though she is somehow trying to hide the flight attendant in a crowd, rather than attributing to her personally an unwillingness to talk (as obviously she did talk to her). Or could it be that TC wants to imply that all crew members would have been dismissive and 'discriminatory' in their attitude towards her? I don't know how 'we' works in the context of storytelling, when it is claimed another said 'we' rather than 'I'. I think she is storytelling.

Next she says:

'I tried to inform her that I was a physician but I was continually cut off by condescending remarks.'
This is a contradiction - the flight attendant, who TC claims had no time to talk to her, then apparently cuts off TC 'continually' - so, having no time to talk to her, she then continually talks at or over her; that is not likely to have happened if she, (or 'we') had said there was no time to talk to her.

Did TC say, 'we don't have time to talk to you', in order to avoid a direct lie - she didn't want to say that the flight attendant had said 'I don't have time', because, as it transpired, she did have time? Or is it to suggest a Delta flight attendant would not normally have spoken to her in the circumstances, but this one had condescended to do so?

Can or should one follow the pronouns when the subject is quoting, or claiming to quote, a third party? What made her choose to say the flight attendant said 'we' rather than 'I'? She surely doesn't expect the reader to think the crew conferred as to whether they had time to talk to her - or to assume that there is a pre-existing understanding amongst them to not have time to talk to black doctors if a white doctor is available. What is the 'we' meant to imply, or am I overthinking it?

If pronouns are instinctive, how does that work when they are quoted by the subject as having been spoken by another? Is it possible to work out what was their line of thought? I would like to know if, generally, non-written quotes should be viewed as unreliable or contaminated, as recall may be approximate, inaccurate, or a distortion. I would think yes, and caution (as in what Larry Taylor is only said to have said in the Blackburn case).

This statement was sent to me for analysis and it caught my attention because of a recent experience.

I was on a flight a few weeks ago in which a young woman with developmental disabilities caused a stir to the point where take off was aborted and the plane set to bring her back.

She ran down the aisle in a panic and sat in the seat behind me, where a flight attendant was attempting to assess how upset the young woman was.

I signaled to the flight attendant to lean towards me and whispered to her that I could help if she wanted.

She gave her permission.

I then asked the young woman, "Where are you from?" in a voice quiet enough that she had to pay attention to hear, and took her mind off the flight by engaging in an 'interview' of sorts. The attendant listened in, while signaling to another attendant 'ok to leave.' It was done quietly. I followed question after question without pause, to not allow the young woman to consider her nerves as she concentrated on what high school she went to, what her favorite class was and what season in Maine she liked the most...and so on. She loved being asked questions as if she was an important celebrity.

The flight attendants deal with emergencies as professionals and if you read what Dr. Cross wrote, and try not to interpret what she says, you will find a very different demeanor.

I really hate to say it, but maybe she was acting unprofessional or nasty and that is why the flight atttendant didnt think she was dealing with an actual doctor.
One of the nastiest, rudest people I HAVE EVER TALKED TO OR HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF DEALING WITH was a black female doctor. If you treat people like shit, theyre not going to like you whether youre black, white, orange or polka-dotted.

People who claim they are CONSTANTLY disrespected (particularly if this person is in a position of power like a doctor) are the ones who constantly disrespect others. I guarantee you this woman treats everyone like shit.

I think the flight attendant asked her questions to be friendly once the emergency was in hand with the other doctor; possibly she sensed a potential troublemaker by the way TC was drawing attention to herself without saying she was a doctor. As flight attendants are trained to respond to 'situations' in a calm and friendly manner, that is most likely what she did.

It's notable how TC tries to justify her inaction by blaming the flight attendant - she claims she blocks her so she is unable to stand (she would have stood earlier if her intention was to help - she still could have stood, it's not as if the attendant was sitting in her lap); she is 'bombarded' with questions (need to persuade - also 'bombarding' suggests aggressive questioning, which is unlikely) while the man is still in need of help - suggesting the flight attendant doesn't much care, and is frustrating her efforts to reach him.

What is 'believe it or not they DO HAVE doctors in Detroit. Now excuse me so I can help the man in need'? - if she really said that, it is haughty, sarcastic and aggressive - if I was the flight attendant, I think at that point I'd want to keep her in her seat. If she didn't say it, she wants people to think she did, which is telling of a superior and condescending attitude towards the flight attendant - she wants to make her look bad - maybe she lacks self-awareness if she thinks it is acceptable to speak to someone in such a way.

Also the 'another seasoned white guy', what does that mean? Maybe she didn't want to offer assistance to a 'seasoned white guy', if the other one is an older sick white man.

young, corporate America working women of color
or some type of medical personnel,

ob gyn "physician's" assistant?

A physician's assistant can do many things a doctor does, like examinations, order tests and blood work, ergo she can go into "doctor mode" but she cannot call herself "Dr. Cook". Hence why she replied she was a "physician" ('s assistant), and why she did not push the button when they were calling for a doctor -- and why she could not provide doctor's credentials.

the "and" might have been when she clarified that she was an "assistant".

It's probably why the subordinate diagnostic stuff was downloaded onto her.

^^ Maybe the doctor saw she was put out and deferred to her expertise. :0) And since Tomika was put in charge, decided that the attendant was a heifer and/or a "she".

Anonymous said...

Referring to a woman as a "heifer" is hateful, fat-shaming, misogynistic, and really really immature. Ummm, she's an Obstetrician??

Anonymous said...

This is tricky in the respect that the event has caused so much attention. However, it's sketchy on several levels. The first is, the subject addresses her post to corporate women of America (of color), not to other physicians as you'd might expect.
Secondly, she doesn't take actual ownership of reported actions/ statements (does not say "I did"), I do not know if this is due to the abbreviations of a post versus spoken language.
Thirdly, if a person on a plane is unresponsive and having an actual perceived emergency, where's the urgency of the subject? Wouldn't a physician who clearly feels as though they are qualified to attend to the patient simply get up and jump in? Maybe she felt hesitant since she is an Ob/Gyn? How is it that the flight attendant dismissed her but then after another physician attended to the patient then asked for her opinion? And this nonsense about carrying credentials? Just a few technical observations, not language related I know.

I am noting how, 10 minutes later, the "heifer" asks her for her
input. Medically, ABC's are used: Airway open and clear? Breathing?
Circulation? These things, especially VS, would have been initiated
immediately by the male doctor present with some depending on the
equipment available. 10 minutes into an emergency and the patient
might be dead already.

I am greatly relieved to see so many people analyze this because Dr. Cross's account reeked of "chip on the shoulder" attitude and extreme embellishment to turn her (perceived) affront into a case of racial discrimination and more. She is fanning the flames for personal gain. Consider the possibility that she was belligerent (and from her own narrative, it would seem she was) and the flight attendant (oh, I mean heifer -- what a revolting remark for physician to make) was trying to just get her to stand down (figuratively -- she was never really on her feet). It is so easy to post total inflammatory BS like this; not many people will stand up and challenge the account that so many want to believe.
