Darlie Routier Police Statement Analyzed

Darlie Routier called 911 to report that she and her children had been stabbed.

Statement Analysis of the call indicated the following:

1.  Darlie Routier knew the identity of the murderer
2.  Darlie Routier  concealed the identity of the murderer
3.  Darlie Routier was, herself,  the murderer.

Here is her statement given to police.

This statement should be consistent with the 911 call.

This is a sample of "Psycho-linguistic profiling" which is an advanced form of Statement Analysis.  It is used to obtain information about the subject's background, experiences, priorities and dominant personality traits.  It is so accurate that it often identifies the author of anonymous threatening letters.

III. Analysis Conclusion

I. Statement of Darlie Routier

8 June, 1996 Rowlett Police Dept.

Darin and Dana my sister came home from working at the shop. The boys were playing with the neighborhood kids outside. I was finishing up dinner. Damon came home and Devon called and I told him to be home soon because we were going to eat. Darin played with the baby (Drake) with Dana while I pulled everything together to eat. Devon came home and we all ate dinner together. After we ate we cleaned all the plates. I was changing Drake while Darin put everything in some containers for leftovers.

We all talked a little about how happy we were that the shop had been so busy for the past three weeks and that we hoped it would continue since work had been slow for a couple of months. Devon and Damon asked if they could play with one of their friends a little longer so we said ok. Darin Dana, and I just sat around and watched a little TV. Later, I’m not sure of exact time I asked Darin to drive Dana (my sister) home because I wasn’t feeling to (sic) well. While Darin was gone the boys brought down their blankets and pillows and asked if they could watch TV. I said yes. They came downstairs and played on the floor in front of the TV with Drake while I made some popcorn.

About 20 or 25 minutes later Darin came in and sat down with us while we watched TV. Drake started to get fussy so I made him a bottle. Soon after the boys fell asleep. Darin took the baby upstairs and put him in his crib and came back downstairs. We talked about a few problems we were having with the car and the boat and had a few words between us. Since I had the baby I have been having some depression. I told Darin I was depressed because I hadn’t been able to take the boys anywhere because we only had one car. He told me he loved me and asked me if I wanted him to sleep downstairs with me because I wanted to stay up a little and watch TV. I told him no because I didn’t think he would be able to sleep on the couch and get any sleep. I had been sleeping on the couch the past week or so off and on because the baby slept in our room in the crib and when he moved he woke me up. Darin and I laid together for a little while and then decided to go to sleep because he had work the next day, this was around 12:30 or1:00, I’m not sure. He kissed me and said he loved me, and I told him I loved him and would see him in the morning.

After awhile I started to get sleepy. The next thing I wake up and feel a pressure on me. I felt Damon press on my right shoulder and heard him cry, this made me really come awake and realized there was a man standing down at my feet walking away from me. I walked after him and heard glass breaking. I got halfway through the kitchen and turned back around to run and turn on the light, I ran back towards the utility room and realized there was a big white handled knife lying on the floor, it was then that I realized I had blood all over me and I grabbed the knife thinking he was in the garage so I thought he might still be there and I yelled for Darin.

I ran back through the kitchen and realized the entire living area had blood all over everything. I put the knife on the counter and ran into the entrance, turned on a light and started screaming for Darin, I think I screamed twice and he ran out of the bedroom with his jeans on and no glasses and was yelling, what is it, what is it. I remember saying he cut them, he tried to kill me, my neck, he ran down the stairs and into the room where the boys were. I grabbed the phone and called 911. Darin started giving Devon CPR while I put a towel on my neck and a towel over Damon’s back. I remember telling Damon to hang on mommy was there. I looked over at Darin and saw the glass table had been knocked halfway off and the flower arrangement had been knocked over. I then stood up and turned around and saw glass all over the kitchen floor. I tried to glance over to see if anything was out of place or if anything was missing. I took a few steps and opened the door and screamed for Karen. I was still on the phone with 911 and I don’t recall what all was said because everything was happening so fast.

I went back to Damon and by then he had stopped moving and the police walked through the door. The paramedics came and tried to work on the children. Darin was screaming Who Did This Who Did This and I started asking if my babies were dead. Darin was crying and said yes. After that I just remember screaming and showing Darin my neck. Darin took me out to the front of the house and by then Darin ran upstairs to make sure the baby was okay and then handed him to Karen our neighbor. I remember them holding a towel on my neck and wrapping my arm and then they put me in an ambulance. Darin got in but they told him he needed to leave so they could take care of me. I remember we got to the hospital and then them telling me they were taking me to surgery. They took off my necklace and put me to sleep. I woke up and minutes later the detectives were there making me all kinds of questions.

II. Statement With Analysis

Here is the statement with basic Statement Analysis  and some points of Psycho-linguistic profiling, seeking to answer the Analytical Question:

Does this statement affirm or negate the conclusion of the 911 call analysis indicating deception and guilt on the part of the caller, Darlie Routier, in the deaths of her children?

Darin and Dana my sister came home from working at the shop.

1. The statement does not begin with the pronoun "I" which alerts the analyst to the psychological distancing from the statement.

Greater and Lesser Context

1. Greater Context:  This is noted in context of a biological mother of deceased young children shortly after their murder.

2.  Lesser Context:  in the verbalized perception of reality based upon prior analysis, the murder "began" at this point of the statement. Therefore we ask, "What is happening at this point of the statement?"

Plurality

The statement of "what happened" begins with "Darin and Dana" coming home and the boys playing with others.  At the time of this writing, that two others were present is a priority for the subject, the biological mother of deceased children.

Note "Dana" is given a full social introduction indicating a good relationship at this point in the statement.

The boys were playing with the neighborhood kids outside.

The statement began with the presence of two others and it continues by adding "boys" and "neighborhood kids" (plural).

Note "the boys" have no names and no connection to the subject. This is highlighted by the greater context of her status and their deaths.

Darin is with Dana and the boys are with neighborhood friends:

 I was finishing up dinner.

The subject is alone.

When asked what happened it is expected that the mother of murdered children would move very quickly to the murder.  Instead, it is very important (priorities noted) that the police (intended recipient) know or "understand" Darlie.  She was isolated in the statement: this is her verbalizing what she perceives to be reality and prioritizes this over the murder.

Damon came home and Devon called and I told him to be home soon because we were going to eat.

This is an example of "unnecessary information" that without training, will be dismissed.

We note her being alone, and we note her engaged in an activity:  she was finishing up dinner.

We now see that she feels it necessary, in the murder investigation where her own sons were violently stabbed, to explain why she told Devon to come home soon.

Police (nor analysts) would have thought to ask, "Why did you tell Devon to come home soon?"

Yet to Darlie Routier, it is vital information.

Analysts also note that regarding the murder of her children, she is "slowing down the pace" of what happened.  In measuring pace and form, this is suggestive of deception in a statement forthcoming. This is to be noted alongside the statistical notation of a statement that does not begin with the pronoun "I" in it.

During the murder investigation to police, Darlie felt the need to tell them why she told someone to come home soon for dinner; the dinner that she was finishing up.

This is not likely to enter the language of a mother of murdered children, yet for our subject, is it insight into her thinking.

It is a priority.

She was alone.
She was serving others.
She is giving herself recognition.

This is happening as her sons lay dead.

This is insight into Darlie Routier.  It may seem unimportant to anyone else, but to her, she needs to explain this.

Darin played with the baby (Drake) with Dana while I pulled everything together to eat.

The baby, who is given a name within parenthesis which is to have a "private conversation" while distancing herself from "the baby."  Note she was "finishing up" dinner while alone, and here gives the empathetic language of effort:  "while I pulled everything together."

In a superficial sense, it is the "good person" principle that belies the status, but more importantly, she seeks empathy for herself from the police, having been both alone and alone serving others.

In the statement, she is alone but does not want to be alone.  Next note the emphasis upon plurality:

Devon came home and we all ate dinner together. After we ate we cleaned all the plates.

This is similar to the masking technique that anonymous authors use when they want the recipient to believe they are not alone. "We are a small foreign faction..." (Ramsey ransom note).

Remember for the point of analysis of the 911 call:  it was an "anonymous" murderer in Darlie's description as she concealed the identity.

I was changing Drake while Darin put everything in some containers for leftovers.

Of all things she could tell us, she not only slows down the pace to avoid getting to what happened she:

a.  introduces diaper change
b.  she repeats back the emphasis of her labors for others

The former should cause investigators to explore Darlie's childhood for sexual abuse.

She did not have to tell us this in the greater context.  Yet, it was important enough for her to include this to police.

We all talked a little about how happy we were that the shop had been so busy for the past three weeks and that we hoped it would continue since work had been slow for a couple of months.

The portrayal is of happiness due to the shop.

Please keep in mind our principle:  Where a person begins a statement is always important.  It is sometimes even the reason for writing the statement.

Where did the statement begin?

It began without Darlie, but at the return from the shop by two others.

Jealousy, envy and the sense of being inconsequential can all be powerful elements in human nature.  Combine the linguistic invitation to explore childhood sexual abuse and a portrait emerges.

She has still not gotten to what happened to her sons.

Devon and Damon asked if they could play with one of their friends a little longer so we said ok. Darin Dana, and I just sat around and watched a little TV.

Note the need to explain why "we" gave permission and note the context:  Devon and Damon had others.
Next:
Note the order:  "Darin, Dana" are close together and separated by "and" from the subject.

The body posture ("sat") indicates an increase in tension for Darlie.

Note the pace continues slow and avoids telling us the most important thing possible on the mind of a mother:  her children were murdered.

This avoidance is consistent with the psychological distancing of not beginning her statement with the pronoun "I" in her first sentence.

Later, I’m not sure of exact time I asked Darin to drive Dana (my sister) home because I wasn’t feeling to (sic) well.

She anticipated police asking, "Why did you ask Darin to drive Dana home?" though it is not something police would even think of. This is why we flag "because" with the highest level of sensitivity.  The subject is preempting the question. But in this case, she preempts a question we would not have thought to ask.

Note that Dana, again is reference as her sister, but this time with parenthesis. This type of "private conversation" is met with repetition.  It comes as Darin and Dana were "sitting" and were listed first and together.

It is suggestive of acute jealousy.

Recall to this point:  Darlie is writing about her murdered sons but her linguistic disposition of empathy is towards herself, not them.

"because I was not feeling well" is very likely true.  She has a need to explain why she did not want her sister present.

While Darin was gone the boys brought down their blankets and pillows and asked if they could watch TV. I said yes. They came downstairs and played on the floor in front of the TV with Drake while I made some popcorn.

Notice here how the element of time is present in her statement.  This is a "timing" issue.  One would think that preparing dinner, for example, would be unrelated to the murder of her sons.

It is not.

Here she enters into the time frame as she is marking time by activity, with her in the center of it.

"While Darin was gone" is an important time for her, just as was the time frame prior to dinner.

"while" is the passing of time.  This is very significant in understanding the murder from her point of view.

It began, for her, prior to dinner, and it continued through these time frames.

About 20 or 25 minutes later Darin came in and sat down with us while we watched TV. Drake started to get fussy so I made him a bottle.

The pace is slow.
The need to show herself as a good mother is done by answering questions that only exist in her mind.

"Why did you make the baby a bottle?" is not a question anyone would ask a mother.

Soon after the boys fell asleep. Darin took the baby upstairs and put him in his crib and came back downstairs. We talked about a few problems we were having with the car and the boat and had a few words between us

When was the conversation positive?

When Darin was with Darlie's sister.

When was the conversation negative?

When she was alone with Darin.

Her children have been viciously murdered, yet she has the wherewithal to even think about a car or a boat.

She had the need to explain why she got her sister out of the home and now introduces negativity between herself and Darin.

Since I had the baby I have been having some depression.

The focus continues to be on Darlie, herself.

Linguistic Disposition

Linguistici Disposition is used to gauge a subject's view of others.  In particular, we expect empathy towards the victims.

Yet, she made dinner, she cleaned up, she wasn't feeling well, she changed the diaper, she made the bottle, she now talks about her depression.

This seemingly does not fit; yet it only does not "fit" until the analyst accepts it from the subject.

Her feeling of isolation, jealousy and depression are all part of the answer to the question,

"What happened?"

I told Darin I was depressed because I hadn’t been able to take the boys anywhere because we only had one car.

This now begins to help the analyst understand why in the statement about the murder of her sons, she had the need to talk about Darin and Dana.

She now gives herself affirmation.

Her linguistic disposition of empathy is towards herself.

She shows a need to justify and subtly shift blame to Darin, to Dana ("my sister", with parenthesis suggesting feeling of betrayal) and now upon there being only one car.

Do not forget:  she is writing about the murder of her children.

Note the communicative language:

He told me he loved me and asked me if I wanted him to sleep downstairs with me because I wanted to stay up a little and watch TV.

The separation becomes solidified.

I told him no because I didn’t think he would be able to sleep on the couch and get any sleep.

"told" indicates firm, one way communication and also, in context, shows the "words between us" is minimized.

note the need to explain "why" she did not want him there.  No officer would have even thought to say, "Why did you not want him to stay with you?"

Yet in her mind, she thinks they will and has an acute need to preempt it.

To further justify her separation from him, she gives more details as to why she needed to be away from him.

This speaks to premeditation.

I had been sleeping on the couch the past week or so off and on because the baby slept in our room in the crib and when he moved he woke me up.

notice now, the pronoun "we" is omitted from the statement after the one way strong communication of "told" above.

Darin and I laid together for a little while and then decided to go to sleep because he had work the next day, this was around 12:30 or1:00, I’m not sure.

He kissed me and said he loved me, and I told him I loved him and would see him in the morning.

They are apart now, physically as they were linguistically when the use of the pronoun "we" suddenly stopped.

This built up for hours, beginning before dinner.

Did you notice that she had the need to explain why, without being asked, she came to be alone?

First with her sister and now with Darin.

After awhile I started to get sleepy.

Time has passed and she has deliberately skipped over it.  This is called a "temporal lacuna" or black hole of missing information over the expanse of time.

What she did during this time, she does not tell us, but she references it.

Why?

Because it is important to her.

This is now visited with a second use of it:

The next thing

The use of the temporal lacunae (two) close together means critically important information deliberately withheld by the subject.

At this most critical time period, the verb tense changes:

I wake up and feel a pressure on me.

She has removed her sister, her husband and skipped time.  She is now in complete linguistic change from past tense consistency to present tense language.

"I wake up" and I "feel" a pressure; not "the pressure of the knife", since the subject already claimed to have been attacked. She did write, "I woke up and felt..."

This is where we often hear police officer say, "she is telling a story."

It is "Narrative Building" here.

There is no need to tell it as an unknown story unfolding before us, but for her, it is a fictional story with many factual details.

She has finally gotten to the actual event.

Form

998 words for the statement.
487 words before the event.

This use of more than 50% of the words dedicated to "before what happened" is "Unreliable on its Form" and is consistent with deception. The overwhelming number of statements that are "unreliable on their form" are heavily weighted in the "before" section of the statement.  This indicates a reluctance to truthfully tell "what happened" as the internal stress of deception causes the subject to slow down the pace, and even "use of the clock" talking about seemingly innocuous or unrelated things.

I felt Damon press on my right shoulder and heard him cry,

Believe her.

Now, listen to the language that indicates the lack of experiential memory in play.

Even here, she elongates time.

this made me really come awake and realized there was a man standing down at my feet walking away from me. I walked after him and heard glass breaking.

Incongruence

In statement analysis, we note wording that shows incongruence, which is often a signal that the subject is not working from experiential memory.

The murderer "walking" and she "walking" after him, is an example of incongruence.

"Realized" is a time sensitive word (it takes time to process information).

The deceptive person stitches actual memory ("I felt pressure" or "I heard him cry") within an overall deceptive narrative and the words often do not fit properly. These often sound contrived and investigators will say, "this doesn't pass the smell test" or a similar term.

instinctively, they are recognizing incongruence within a statement.  They have heard enough people speak from experiential memory to know what it sounds like and what it does not sound like.

Articles

She is recalling a crime that had already been committed and she is alive with the consequences. Therefore, there is no reason to describe "a" man (article) since the event already happened.  Even with this small point we note deception.

I got halfway through the kitchen and turned back around to run and turn on the light,

1.  in such an emergency ("walking man" and "walking after a man") one might not have such a detailed measurement of the kitchen.

2. Intention.  Deceptive people are counting on their audience to interpret their words, rather than listen. Here, she said she "turned around to run" is to explain both why she turned around and what she intended to do.  This is another example of incongruence within a statement.

3.  Note "turn on the light" here, in the greater context.  Then, take it with the lesser context, including the diaper detail.  This is an indication that Darlie Routier was a likely victim of childhood abuse.  That behavioral analysis would conclude the same thing from her crime, notwithstanding, it is more of a confirmation in the language than a new detail.

Inanimate Object

When a subject gives a human attribute to an inanimate object, it may indicate a personal connection with the object.  For example, "the marijuana was sitting on the table."  Marijuana does not sit, stand or walk around.  When an investigator hears this, the initial thought is, "the suspect put it here."

Color

When an object's color is given unnecessarily, it is another signal of having personally handled it.

"The red bag of jewelry was missing..." wording came from the thief, who had claimed to have never seen a bag of jewelry but then gave it color unnecessarily.  The only exception to this is the routine use of color in vehicles or if the suspect is answering a specific question about color.

Here we have indicators of guilty deception from the subject:

I ran back towards the utility room and realized there was a big white handled knife lying on the floor, it was then that I realized I had blood all over me and I grabbed the knife thinking he was in the garage so I thought he might still be there and I yelled for Darin.

We now know why she skipped over time twice in her statement.

Note that "realized" is a process of thinking in which time must pass. In this "emergency" of "assault", there is no pause to consider, contemplate and come to a realization.  This word, "realized" is "incongruent" in the statement.

Note:  she gives two indicators of a guilty knowledge of the knife. She gives its color unnecessarily and she gives it human body posture (lying on the floor).

This is a verbal indication that she both handled it and she is the one who put it on the floor.

She is, linguistically, taking ownership of it while we consider the space of time she jumped over.

This is what it sounds like to stitch together truth and fabrication in language.

I ran back through the kitchen and realized the entire living area had blood all over everything

What was her linguistic disposition?

Towards her sister, she was both her sister and she was her ("sister") showing both positive relationship and conflict.

She showed sympathetic linguistic (positive) towards herself preparing, cleaning up, and so on.

Here, she actually shows more empathy for the house having the mess of blood, not "everywhere" but "all over everything", of which she, Darlie, would have to do the clean up, rather than the victims.

I put the knife on the counter and ran into the entrance, turned on a light and started screaming for Darin, I think I screamed twice and he ran out of the bedroom with his jeans on and no glasses and was yelling, what is it, what is it.

Deceptive people often feel a pressure to convince their audiences that they are truthful, so they use lots of words and unnecessary detail.  This "proves" they "must be telling the truth" because they include factual details that truthful people would not feel necessary to state.

Casey Anthony had a need to convince police that her paid babysitter was a real person rather than a figment of her imagination.  Therefore, while her daughter was "missing" she went as far as to describe the phantom's "perfect teeth."

This type of "need to persuade" has an opposite effect upon listeners.  In litigation, it works in a similar way:  short sentences can frighten the opponent because they get a sense of the strength of the allegation. It is similar to a mom who keeps counting to three, over and over, until the child knows that no consequence will be delivered.  Those who discipline immediately find that they may have to discipline less than those who spend much time threatening.

I remember saying he cut them, he tried to kill me, my neck, he ran down the stairs and into the room where the boys were.

The incongruence continues as she offers, unnecessarily, what she "remembers."

This is an open statement and it is a "high alert" hormonal statement of a mother who has to save her children' lives. Therefore, "I remember" is not a struggle to recall something from 20 years ago, but an indication of concealed information, with a need to persuade that she is truthful, just like adding in that Darin was wearing his pants.

"I must be telling the truth, see?  I even told the truth about his glasses."

I grabbed the phone and called 911.

This is an interesting sentence.  On its form, it is reliable. In fact, there is nothing in it to indicate possible deception.

She did grab the phone and she did call 911.  The analysis reveals that she knew and withheld the identity of the killer,.

With Darin's appearance in the statement, we can expect this pattern of reliability to continue.

It was critical to her to have the others gone, just as it was vital for her to have the police understand how isolated and depressed she was.

Darin started giving Devon CPR while I put a towel on my neck and a towel over Damon’s back. I remember telling Damon to hang on mommy was there. I looked over at Darin and saw the glass table had been knocked halfway off and the flower arrangement had been knocked over.

Passivity conceals identity and/or responsibility

This continues her "linguistic disposition of empathy towards herself:  look at the mess that was made...not that the "killer" did this or that,.

Linguistic Indicator:  The Murderer

The most important Linguistic Indicator of the account is Darlie Routier's Linguistic Disposition towards the killer.

How would you feel about a man who killed your children and tried to kill you?

We would measure this disposition you hold towards him by the words you use.

Context of Murder = Expectation of Negative.

he is a "killer", "monster", "invader", "evil" and so on.

The absence of this concludes "positive linguistic disposition."

This is due to the Greater Context.

Darlie Routier, victim and mother of dead children should have rage, contempt, fear, etc of the invasive killer.

Thus far?

He is "a man."

There is a mess in the living room.  There is blood "on everything" and even the flower arrangement is off.

She cannot bring herself to condemn the killer because she feels empathy towards the killer.

The killer was stuck one while her husband and her (sister) were out and business was going well, and she was home alone, having to make dinner and clean up dinner and get sister to leave and...

The flower arrangement (not the "flowers" but the "arrangement", which means someone had to "arrange" (human connection) them is not as it should be. She writes this as her children are dead. The flower arrangement was done by someone and it is not as it should be.

What does this cause her to do?

I then stood up

This is very important to her.  She is "in" this sentence psychologically.  She made dinner, she cleaned up, she kept house, which has now blood "on everything" and her flower arrangement is out of place.  She "stood up" (tension)

and turned around and saw glass all over the kitchen floor.

She has to clean up this mess and assault against her house.

Regarding the Form:

We could equally argue that the "event" is the knifing of her children in the statement.

If we measure the form by this, it becomes further unbalanced.

When Darin is in the statement, she can repeat what he would have heard and seen, but when he is not "in" the statement, she goes into her thoughts and intentions.

Here is incongruence continued.

I tried to glance over to see if anything was out of place or if anything was missing.

She remains very concerned about the condition of the house that she has to clean up.

Here, she tells us that she "tried" (attempted, failed) to "glance" to see if...

"glance" is "happenstance" language.  This now tells us something very important:

She did this deliberately.

Combine "happenstance" with "tried" and "the reason why" (blue coloring) as she anticipates being questioned as to why she looked over.

This is more deception and anticipation of questions that only a guilty subject would know to ask.

It is to show criminal guilty knowledge of what happened.

I took a few steps and opened the door and screamed for Karen. I was still on the phone with 911 and I don’t recall what all was said because everything was happening so fast.

Off script, she cannot recall what she said because it did not proceed from experiential memory, of which recall is not taxed.

The need to explain why she cannot remember, in an open statement, is further deception.

I went back to Damon and by then he had stopped moving and the police walked through the door. The paramedics came and tried to work on the children. Darin was screaming Who Did This Who Did This and I started asking if my babies were dead.

No natural maternal denial speaks to both premeditation and the lack of shock.  She could process it due to the priority of self preservation. See Kate McCann for an example of this.

Darin was crying and said yes. After that I just remember screaming and showing Darin my neck.

Not a single negative word about the killer, but lots of concern for the house and now her own neck.

Darin took me out to the front of the house and by then Darin ran upstairs to make sure the baby was okay and then handed him to Karen our neighbor.

Was he okay? did the "killer" or "monster" get him?
There is no linguistic concern expressed for him.

Her concern is for herself.

Not asking me about my children, or who the killer was.

Analysis Conclusion:

Deception Indicated

the 911 call revealed knowledge of the killer's identity and deliberate concealment of the same.

Here we learn that Darlie has a positive linguistic disposition towards the killer.

Darlie Routier, the caller to 911, is the killer.

She very likely had planned this even earlier than cited here, and did not go through with the plans until the sense of isolation, betrayal and inconsequence grew to a level she could not bear. The final decision came while her husband and sister were at work.

She had an acute need to explain why it was that she orchestrated being alone with the children.

The lack of empathy towards the victims and the positive disposition towards the killer suggest sociopathic personality.

It is very likely that Routier suffered acute child abuse.  The distancing language of time passing may indicate some disassociation but it is not strong.  She had an acute need for relevancy and the boys took away from the attention she craved. She was likely very torn about her sister, both embracing and feeling that she was a "sister" in name only.  Post partum depression may also have been indicated.  The lack of empathy for the victims, especially when placed against the concern for the house condition is further linguistic indicator of both sociopathy and "compartmentalization" which may have arisen from acute depression. When a selfish personality experiences these things, they can lose focus on how others perceive them. This may be what was observed later in the behavior prior to arrest.

Rowlett Police Dept successfully investigated this case to its rightful conclusion. The analysis of the 911 call is affirmed by the statement Routier made to police.

Darlie Routier was sentenced to death for the murder of her son. That was in 1997. It is now 2018. She was sentenced to die 21 years ago, but still she lives. Why? Why do they not strap her to the table and make her die?

Why don't you analyze Darlie's own words. Here is a letter she wrote to her supporters from prison and some poetry:

Davey Blackburn's 'happenstance' "snapshots", as told to Levi Lusko, 5/22/16:

"... while I was sitting there with her waiting for the, the paramedics, I-, s-, my, my mind was taking snapshots of the things in the room that were out of place. And so I remember being able to recall that later when the investigators came in to ask me about what was going on, you know, what, wh- how I found her."

It is difficult to read this.

She states several times she has been depressed after the birth of the latest child.

Regardless of whether she did the murders or not, a psychotic episode due to postpartum shouldn't require the death penalty.

Naturally, her focus would be on herself. It sounds like maybe she didn't want her sister to see her when she spiraled out of control. It was said it was her sister's idea to spray the silly string...something someone would do to try and cheer someone up.

It is sad. Her husband believed her innocence.

And, the strange car hanging around prior to the murders is questionable, too.

Anonymous said...

This is confusing. Where is the husband while this is happening? Didnt he hear screaming or anything? If she was stabbed, why didn't he call 911 instead of her?

She sounds guilty in the thing Peter analyzed, but the 911 call doesn't have usual indicators of guilty caller...it might have some, but not the usual ones.

Maybe the husband did it???

Anonymous said...

I definitely hear depression and tiredness in her words, the way she describes each thing "getting dinner together" "putting leftovers in containers" "cleaning all the plates"...this sounds like someone who is very depressed and not sleeping much, where every chore is taxing and seems overwhelming. Could she be an abuse victim?

When she complains of not being able to take the boys anywhere bc she does not have a car, it did pop into my mind "is the husband trying to keep her isolated? Is he abusive?" If he is, maybe he stabbed them. Just sayin'.

Anonymous said...

Why does she describe what the husband was wearing (jeans) and not wearing (no glasses) when he came out of the bedroom? I find that very odd. Is there a part of her that suspects he did it?

The forensic evidence against Darlie was strong as well. There were several tv shows about the case. She picked up the knife to explain why her fingerprints would be on it. And there were cast off blood drops from her sons on the back of her shirt- dropped there as she plunged the knife into them and raised her hand over her head to stab again. She did it.

I knew she did it two minutes into the 911 call (thanks Peter!).

From the transcript at http://www.fordarlieroutier.org/911Call/transcript.html:

02:02:20 Darlie Routier ...some man ...came in ...stabbed my babies ...stabbed me ...I woke up ...I was fighting ...he ran out through the garage ...threw the knife down ...my babies are dying ...they're dead ...oh my God...

No mother would jump to that conclusion so fast.

This case is also the subject of Forensic Files season 4 episode 1, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxr97WeYcvc.

" I remember saying he cut them "
At no point prior to that does she mention the horrific moment of realizing any of her children having been " cut "

Mike Dammann said...

The 911 call is even more revealing. She starts off by mentioning someone entering her house. Then she mentions herself being stabbed before that her boys had been stabbed. Even though they were dead and/or dying:

https://darliefacts.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/darin-statement-june-8-transcribed-final1.pdf (was this statement ever analyzed?)
"I put the knife on the counter and ran into the entrance, turned on a light and started screaming for Darin, I think I screamed twice and he ran out of the bedroom with his jeans on and no glasses and was yelling, what is it, what is it."

Statements of both have inconsistencies.
Like the part about 'putting on pants'
She tells us he came down without glasses but pants on.
He tells us he came down with glasses and no pants on (he later went upstairs to put on pants, then checked on baby Drake, although he didn't said went upstairs to do that, he went up to put on some pants.)

"After awhile I started to get sleepy. The next thing I wake up and feel a pressure on me. I felt Damon press on my right shoulder and heard him cry, this made me really come awake and realized there was a man standing down at my feet walking away from me."

Could she have become 'sleepy' because of her own injury? Could it be she was losing consiousness because of her own injury? So it wasn't really sleeping, but rather out of consious.

When she was at the hospital doctors also 'put her to sleep'
Yet being 'put to sleep' before a surgery isn't the same as 'going to sleep' when being tired and lay down on a bed (or couch)...yet she uses the same frase when it comes to 'sleep' (and waking up)

Before I came on the part of you telling 'premeditation should be considered'........I was thinking about that too (premeditation), when she was talking about all that what happened before the attack took place, it made me think of premeditation. Because why would all that information be of any worth or meaning if you just had seen a stranger walking out of your home and leaving a horrific scene in which your children have been brutally stabbed, you yourself is being harmed and you think it's necassary to tell what happened in the hours before the attack took place
This part of the story would be 'safe' to talk about because in her mind she would think it showed how she 'loved' (good guy-principle) everyone for doing all the things a mother does....preparing dinner, feeding a baby, changing a diaper, doing dishes, taking care of children (man often take care of carbage, driving, playing with childeren after work)

So the intruder let the boy go to his mom (after he stabbed him) to 'wake' her (while crying), while the intruder (the man) was standing down at 'her feet' and walking away from her.
You can't 'stand down' and 'walking away', it is just not possible to do that at the same time!

Habundia said...

"I walked after him and heard glass breaking. I got halfway through the kitchen and turned back around to run and turn on the light, I ran back towards the utility room and realized there was a big white handled knife lying on the floor, it was then that I realized I had blood all over me and I grabbed the knife thinking he was in the garage so I thought he might still be there and I yelled for Darin."

She walked after him, but coming into the kitchen she then turned back around and started to run? Was the kitchen that big that running in it would be appropiate, while she only walked to get into the kitchen after the attacker, she then runs to turn on the light?
'a big white handled knife'
the word handled struck me as odd.
Why wouldn't she said 'a big bloody knive or a big knive covered with blood' was lying on the floor (if it was 'handled', it should have been covered with blood and wouldn't been looking 'white' anymore)
White .....serenity, heaven, angels

"Devon and Damon asked if they could play with one of their friends a little longer so we said ok. Later, I’m not sure of exact time I asked Darin to drive Dana (my sister) home because I wasn’t feeling to (sic) well." (No mentioning if the boys already are back from playing with one of their friends)
"While Darin was gone the boys brought down their blankets and pillows and asked if they could watch TV." (Did they come home while Darin was still home? Or did they come home while Darin was gone? "I said yes. They came downstairs and played on the floor in front of the TV with Drake while I made some popcorn."

When did the boys return from playing the second time with one of their friends? Did they even left the home for playing a second time that day?
Darin comes back from when he brought her sister home, yet the boys don't return back. They suddenly are back and 'brought down their blankets and pillows', they came downstairs......you can only bring something 'down' if you'd be up(stairs).

"One would think that preparing dinner, for example, would be unrelated to the murder of her sons.
It is not."

She made popcorn (this made me think of a story I read about a mother who went to make juice for her child.....this was later found out, after the child was being punched so hard she died of her injuries, the mother was later charged with the death of her child together with her boyfriend)........they never ate it .....at least she doesnt tell us they ate the popcorn she made. (was there ever popcorn?)
Or can it be that what she made (popcorn) had something in it what made the boys become 'fuzzy', or maybe she already did put something in the food during dinner, which made them maybe not really responding when being attacked after they had fallen asleep. Which made me think of premeditation.

The one thing (and really the only thing) that has bothered me about this case is the extensive, full coverage bruising Darlie had on her arms. Even the pic in this article shows that. I've come to think that she may have put her arm into something, or between 2 things and consistently slammed it shut onto herself, or steadily increased the pressure while her arm was "in" something.
With her saying "pressure on my shoulder" I'm thinking that is what she was referring to. When she self-injured to make it look like she was in battle.
The bruising is uniform to me, running up and down the length of her arm, from wrist to armpit.
Perhaps this is when Darlie's "loss of time" or temporal lacuna took place..when she was self-inflicting injuries?

Anonymous said...

"Full arm bruising? How does one do that to themselves."

She strained/tore her tricep from repeatedly swinging the knife far back behind her head, and then stabbing it into her own children. Result: full arm bruising.

“We all talked….” Did the children talk about how happy they were that business had picked up in the shop, or are they not part of Darlie’s “all”? “All” is sensitive to her, as she uses it three times, each time of when her sister is present. There’s tension when she, Darin and Dana “sit” just watching TV.

The boys bring down their bedding and ask if they can watch TV. “I said yes.”
I’d think it more likely they would ask before bringing down their bedding, because if their mother says no, they will need to take it upstairs again. Maybe they anticipate a yes, but I wonder if Darlie is the type of mother who encourages her children to sleep in her pristine downstairs - besides, if she is downstairs because the baby stirring wakes her, won’t her boys, sleeping uncomfortably, stir more? Anyway, after they have brought their bedding downstairs, they again come downstairs. Did Darlie bring their bedding downstairs, and encourage them to watch tv with popcorn, till they fell to sleep?

She had been sleeping on the couch for the past week or so because she woke when her baby stirred in his crib - that’s how mothers are designed, yet she claims she didn’t wake while her sons were being murdered besides her, or while her own throat was slashed - she left out how she came by the stab wound to her arm, which is a bit of an oversight.

What struck me most was how she didn’t say what condition her sons were in, or that she had got down besides them to see if they were breathing - she didn’t refer to them at all when she returned into the living area from the kitchen. Where one would expect her to have said her sons were covered in blood, and she rushed them to - she instead talks about “blood all over everything” - over things, yet not of her children, all stabbed and bloodied, and about putting on a light - moving away from them. Then, when speaking to Darin, she minimises what was done to the boys - ‘“he cut them”, while exaggerating her self-inflicted wounds, which were cuts, into “he tried to kill me”. As she did not say she saw and went to the boys, just that the whole living area had blood “all over everything”, how could she say that her boys were cut - or stabbed? Are they just part of “everything”? They were knifed through - the knife which entered one of the little boys went through him with such force that it pierced the carpet beneath him.

Hey Jude said...

Did she grab the phone from Darin? It is necessary to pick up the phone in order to make a call, so to say “I grabbed the phone”’ is unnecessary information, which makes it doubly important. Why is it doubly important? She prevents Darin, who may have suspected her, from making the call, and she is able to alibi build as much to Darin, as to the operator.

“I went back to Damon and by then he had stopped moving…” - it is chilling how, through the 911 call, while she repeatedly claimed her babies were dying and dead, she was aware that at least the one boy was alive and even moving, yet her insistence was that they were dying and dead. If she had not done it, she could not have known the knife had penetrated so deeply as to make the attack fatal- she did not say that she had even got down besides them to look at their condition - only that she put a towel on Damon’s back, after she put one to her neck. She didn’t include a recollection of her first horrified sight of them, which would be expected, because she already was aware that they had been stabbed through and through. I think most mothers’ instinct, seeing the one little boy was obviously NOT dead, would be to throw down the phone (assuming in those days it was a house phone with a cord rather than a cordless) and try to stop the bleeding, and to comfort him, rather than keep on the phone babbling rubbish, and informing the operator that they wouldn’t be able to get fingerprints from the knife - I think, if an intruder had attacked her children, a more expected reaction would be to have given her address and said her children had been stabbed, then left the phone hanging while she tried to help her son - Darin could only help one - she was blabbering on about fingerprints and probably further traumatising at least one of her sons in his last moments by screaming they were dead.

I have always wondered whether those little boys realized it was their own mother attacking them so violently. Horrific if they did.

Darlie's self loathing is evident.

I believe that the self inflicted injuries went beyond a false crime scene of self protection. I think she wanted to harm herself.

Lucia, a terrible thought, but...yes, based upon her own words that indicate the boys' lives within them likely did not mean immediate death, so recognition, unless in shock, would have taken place.

Its almost too terrible to contemplate, but she introduced it all in her crimes and words.

Mike,

I know Behavioral analysis had a field day with the silly string stuff, but more important is her words, allowing for the possibility of being guilty.

Especially in greater context, (mother, bio, children, very young, personal attack, in house, etc) the smaller context (sentence structure, defense) it is that I refuse to argue with her.

If she allows for herself to be guilty, I will allow for it too.

This was not a difficult analysis. I did not enter profiling on this one; just the basic SA of identifying the anonymous killer.

Since she is the killer, she inflicted the harm upon herself. I don't find it odd at all that she could create that full coverage bruise. It just takes a bit of thought.
I've treated people that look like their face has been in a prize fight, and they did it themselves.
One woman, actually stabbed herself twice. Stab once in belly, pulled it out, and stabbed herself again to cover a crime.
This lends credence to premeditation to me...she had to of figured out how to do this to herself to make it look like she had "fought off" an attack.Old Darlie was thinking and plotting awhile I believe

Correction - I have since read the autopsy reports - the knife wounds did not go so deep as to exit through to the carpet.

Peter,

I posted about the triceps tear bruising. That's what it looks like to me.

Bobcat said...

Apparently, the bruises weren't present immediately after the murder, but we're there in photos taken four days later. When I strained my triceps, the bruising appeared a few days later. I couldn't figure out why I had these strange bruises. I even went to the doctor to have them looked at. A few days before, I had worked hard mulching and had very sore arms from the exertion.

The bruises were awful to observe, but embarrassing to admit they came from a mulching 'injury'.

I believe Darlie's major bruising is from the exertion of stabbing her son's.

lynda said...

I have never seen tricep bruising extend to the wrists and the hands or be that extensive. She cut her own throat. She stabbed herself more than once in her forearm, her fingers were slashed which could have been done in two ways. 1. She did it herself to make it look like she was fighting off knife attack/defensive wounds or her hand slipped off the shaft of the knife onto the blade when she was stabbing her children. She stabbed herself in the shoulder. Why are people so disinclined to think she bruised herself too? She made it look like she had been thru a war "fighting" off an attacker. I postulated that it lends credence to premeditation and exactly how deep her sickness is.Also, it was intriguing that she used the word "pressure" on her shoulder. (She did stab herself in the shoulder} If anyone wants to look at all of the evidence pics of Darlie's injuries that were submitted during trial, here is the link
http://www.fordarlieroutier.org/Evidence/TrialExhib.html

Bobcat said...

My bruising was more localized, as I wasn't swinging my arms back and forth. I think her bruising is more widespread because of the repeated stabbing motions. The internal bleeding spread around more and showed up in the dark coloration days later.

Bobcat said...

Lynda,

I'm sure there were additional self inflicted injuries and probably some bruising from her sons defending themselves, but I also see what looks like triceps strain bruising.

I have ro agree with Jude (who worded it quit brilliant)
Even if you were a smart kid at the age of 4, which i believe you were, I dont believe a 4 year old is able to word the things as you did in this blog post. 4 year old dont have that much of a vocabulary.

Ive been wondering too about the bruises on her arm and the explanation of stabbing her kids as such an extended "workout" it left bruises doesnt seem that impossible (as someone claimed that all suggestions are bs)

She maybe did tried to kill herself and failed.

The first responding officer stated the same thing. You can see him make that statement at 28:30 into this documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2vwvA5WbqU&t=29s

Where in the autopsy report are things stated otherwise?

Hey Jude said...

Anon - the autopsy reports record the depth of the knife wounds - in neither is it stated that there were exit wounds.

I saw that interview. My thought was, after reading the autopsy reports, that Darlie missed at that attempt and hit the floor with the knife rather than one of the boys. It seems Damon survived for some time - she said she "thought he was dead", and asked Darin if they were still laying there - as though she anticipated they might not be. What did she think they would be doing if not still laying there with multiple stab wounds? She asked, and allowed for the possibility that her sons were not still laying there - if she thought they might be moving and therefore alive, why did she say all she could do was sit there?

habundia said...

What did she say?

habundia said...

Why didnt the dispatcher herself not start telling Darlie what to do. I get its what's expected of a mother to ask for help for their child, but I could imagine (kind of, I have no idea about such a horrific act done to your children and yourself), but yet I could imagine that the shock of the situation didnt let you think straight.

Ive been in a situation where an ex boyfriend of my one decided to beat up my girlfriend and when it happened because of the shock I didnt think about calling 112 (911) and went looking at the phonebook for a number of ambulance.....after all was over Ive often wondered...why didnt I call 112 (911)?

So why didnt the dispatcher try to "activate" her to give first aid.....?
She seemed more busy with talking to others then to the caller to calm them down...isnt that also a part of being a 911 operator?

Anecdote: a 911 operator was fired because for 6 months she had failed to anwser emergency calls, because " she didnt want to talk to people", unbelievable!

People are intriguing creatures with some bizar wiring!

Those bruises are self inflicted.

My husband does karate and Kickboxing and he has never had bruising on his inner arms and he has knocked the bags over many times.

And look at MMA fighters after. Brusing happens in outer areas of the body. Would be on outter arms, legs, face. Not inner arms.

I do not think the boys fought much. I don’t think they saw it coming. One was stabbed in the bagel. Based on photos it likely went into his lungs. He may not have been able to scream much less speak. The other she likely stabbed initially while he was asleep and again, may have left him unable to scream out or she may he been able to cover his mouth.

With the silly string video her family keeps trying to excise it. Like her sister keeps saying it was her idea. But what I don’t think they get... it’s not the silly string at all. It was her face and demeanor. I have seen people do something the deceased loved in their death but it’s heart breaking. She had what is often stated here as duper delight (right words). Like “I got away with it”. She probably thought she did at that point.

I too believe his was planned.

And some say the neck cut was too close to her artery for it to be self inflicted. That she didn’t want to kill herself.... But my view on that is that she had staged everything at the time. Even the stupid sock.. and now she had to make her wounds look real and decided to cut her neck as the final thing before waking Darin to start her act. She was probably trying to hurry up so she could start her act and did it too hard. But I do not honk for a moment she really planned to hurt herself.

trustmeigetit said...

Excuse typos. Typing on my phone.

Mike Dammann said...

She also had a stab wound on her arm. So to believe that she woke up by her son and neither of the stab wounds of course is something too incredible to even consider. Apparently she hinted at possibly having been raped but the rape test was negative.

As for her wound close to the artery:

Mind you, she did contemplate suicide before as shown in her note. No, she no longer intended to kill herself. But in order to make her story more credible, she likely knowingly and willingly decided to risk her life to a degree.

Mike Dammann said...

Some of her strange behavior she explains in her own words.
"The last thing a guilty person would do, is do that" was her explanation for inviting the media to tape her graveside birthday party for one of her dead sons.
This could indicate a way of wanting to build an alibi in her own mind or at least create a certain image in the public eye. She believed this was something a guilty person would not do. So this was exactly what she did. And of course is backfired.

Mike Dammann said...

Through her own words and actions, Darlie has shown us how extremely important her image is to her. This goes beyond simply wanting to avoid prison. And this is likely something that has existed since childhood since when she perfected the art of portraying herself in a way that used to get her positive attention.

She was not able to stay under the radar the same way she "had to" pose for glamour shots while in prison. She didn't just want to avoid prison, but also make sure she would have a certain future on the outside world without any shadows hanging over her.

While her ability to portray herself in a certain way has likely convinced many of her innocence, it also resulted in her doing something which according to one juror played a huge role in her conviction. Emotional impact on jurors is not to be undermined. And as that one juror stated, had he seen the beginning of the graveside video, he may have voted otherwise. Regardless of the forensic evidence that is.

As for the claim that the knife went through the body of one child into the carpet: The autopsy report didn't describe exit wounds. But the ABC report stated it as a fact.

I'm with you. It's not about the silly string. It's how she looks and acts. They say, if we saw what happened before and after, we would feel different. It's just that only sociopath can "put up" a happy face in a situation like that. So I don't think I would feel any different. I don't believe in death penalty. Not even in cases like this. It won't bring those little boys back. I think in this case the best punishment would be photos taken of her today and let her see, that there is very few left of that dashing, glamourious DD38 blond, she once was. If you look videos of her around her trial, you can see how she enjoys cameras and attention she is having. And still do after all these years.

In this resent interview she said that she felt blessed that she had life only few people had and three healthy sons. "We were happy." Really? Thinking back of course she might feel so, but at that time, she was thinking suicide. That don't sound very happy to me.

These last two shows on this case The Last Defense and the 20/20 episode did nothing for the boys. They left out so much fact and threw in so much innuendo. So long as people refuse to look at the evidence against Darin, the truth will never come out. Darin had no alibi in Darlie and that 911 call proved that for a fact. When Darin did cpr on Devon the first time, right after he got downstairs, within 39 seconds he announced that boy dead to Darlie. Darlie is heard screaming this out seconds into the 911. Darin then leaves Devons side, but he doesn't go over to help Darlie or Damon, he goes right past them and goes back upstairs, then he lies about why he went back upstairs. When he comes back down again he denies help to Darlie and Damon, instead he runs out the front door to meet officer Waddell. He tells Waddell he is going to his neighbors for help, but Waddell tells Darin to go back into the house. Once they enter the home Darin immediately rushes past Damon and Darlie again and he goes right back to Devon. He immediately gets down on the floor and starts cpr on that boy for the second time. Waddell said when he looked at Devon he knew he was gone. He didn't tell Darin to go over and help Devon, he did that all on his own. Darin knew for a fact Devon was gone and had been gone for over 3 minutes. He took that boys dead body a used it to trick officer Waddell into believing he was trying to help his family. Waddell had no idea Darin had already done cpr and announced Devon dead, but once I proved this to him he finally realized that the cpr he watched Darin do on Devon was all a show. Waddell turned his attention to Darlie and while he did this Darin got up from Devon and snuck out of the house. At that time he believed Darin had gone to the neighbors for help, but he didn't. Darin returned to the home just seconds before the second officer entered the home. Officer Walling said when he came in he saw Darin in the living room just standing there next to Devon. He said he was red faced and out of breath as though he had been running. Greg Davis knew these details. He knew Darin had the opportunity to lose or plant the sock in the alley but he kept that crucial information from the jury. Darin then got rid of the court appointed lawyers and hired a lawyer that represented him and Darlie Kee in a gag order. Doug Mulder took on Darie's case and agreed not to implicate Darin in the crime, and he didn't, so the jury never got to hear any of the evidence against Darin. From that time on Darin began to set Darlie up and continued to do so right up until her conviction. To keep Darlie quiet Darin would tell her the police had another suspect and an arrest was pending. Darlie wrote to friends with the good news, but instead she was punished by the judge and she was no longer allowed any outside contact. From that time on Darin took over the meetings with her lawyer and filled him in with all the details he wanted to come out. Darlie was set up and eventually sent to death row without ever having a chance. To this day they have not investigated Darin and they refused to do so even though the evidence implicating Darin in the crime is still there loud and clear.

This case will never be solved until they investigate Darin Routier. He was not investigated 23 years ago, and he remains uninvestigated to this day. The evidence is all there pointing to the killer but they refuse to look. Greg Davis has sent more people to death row than any other prosecutor and they are afraid if they investigate Darlie's case they will find all the horrible things Greg Davis did and said just to get that conviction on Darlie. He with held crucial information from the jury that he knew would have changed the verdict. He twisted her words around to make the evidence fit. He mocked Darin during the trial because he knew Darin was more than involved in the crime. They all need to be investigated, specially Greg Davis and Darin Routier.

The fingerprint her fanbots keeps talking about is too smudged to ever be identified but it is Darlies size. If Darin had killed the boys Darlie would have told on him instantly. Darlie killed Devon and Damon and she will pay the ultimate price for it. Guilty as charged.

Darin was thoroughly investigated. His story matched the evidence. Darlie's didn't. None of the evidence pointed aty Darin. It all pointed at Darlie. NO evidence was withheld from the jury. And NO, Darin did NOT have a chance to plant the sock--the neighbor across the street watched the whole scene, from the first scream, and Darin never went back toward the alley. Think about the fact that you have to tell outright lies if you want to make Darlie look even remotely innocent. What does that tell you?

Anyway. The purpose for my comment is the "big white-handled knife." That was Darlie's own knife, from her own kitchen...yet she pretends not to recognize it. Not once does she mention that it's her knife, in her statement or in her trial testimony. I know that by imputing action to it, she is taking ownership...but I think her goal was to deny ownership, to prevent anyone from "seeing" the knife in her hand before the moment she "realized" it was on the floor. (The irony is, her picking it up "on instinct," as she claimed at her trial--the idea that she thought "he" was still in the garage was forgotten at that point--it makes more sense to pick up "on instinct" one's own belonging that is out of place, than it does to pick up some random knife. But again, I believe she was trying very hard to deny the image of that knife in her hand before she supposedly picked it up from the floor; she did not want to acknowledge that she had access to the murder weapon before that moment.)

Any thoughts on that?
