You and Lucia have done great work on this. The nuance of the mother being neglectful but that all parents can at times be guilty of such neglect to some degree or other is very interesting. Looking at the foster mother saying she 'heard nothing' - one of your lessons mentioned that truthful people would usually describe what they did see or hear rather than what they didn't. It might be unimportant in this instance, though, as the lack of sound was what supposedly led her to know that William was missing - which shows, as you stated, that she did not have eyes on him at the time. But this is to buy in to her version of what happened which, on balance, I'm not sure I do. Thanks for your insights.

OT Update:

Father of missing toddler to be interviewed in civil lawsuit

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The father of a missing Maine toddler is expected to be interviewed 10 years after the disappearance, as part of a civil lawsuit seeking to hold him accountable for her death.

Justin DiPietro reported toddler Ayla missing in 2011 in Waterville.

A judge declared her to be legally dead in 2017. The Morning Sentinel reports that her mother, Trista Reynolds, sees the interview as an indication that progress is ramping up, giving her renewed hope.

DiPietro’s attorney, Michael Waxman, says there’s no evidence he has seen that supports any claim that his client had anything to do with her disappearance.

No charges have been filed.

Is British boxer Anthony Joshua being truthful when accused of taking performance enhancing drugs?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/boxing/article-6744393/Anthony-Joshua-hits-outrageous-steroids-claim-rival-Jarrell-Miller.html

"I never stick needles up my a*** and I get tested all the time."

The 'I' pronoun shows psychological commitment.
We let the subject's words guide us and do not interpret.
The statement is not as reliable as saying "I didn't take performance enhancing drugs"

He allows for the possibility of needles being inserted elsewhere at another point in time.
Saying he gets tested all the time is unnecessary information.
Joshua's use of "never" instead of "did not" is noted.
"Never" is more unreliable when applied to a specific event in time.

Joshua is not necessarily being untruthful, but "never" would compel me to question a specific event at a specific date/time, not a broad vague timespan, thereby giving him the opportunity to give a reliable denial like "I did not take drugs".

"I take that as a compliment to all my dedication and strength and power training. If I was on steroids as well I wouldn’t fit in this shirt"

Again not a reliable denial of the accusation. The boasting seems inconsistent with someone who has been wrongly accused of a serious infraction. The use of hypothetical "If I was..." instead of experiential memory.

Followed by more verbiage on how hard he trains, how much he spends on testing etc:

"What about the 11 years I’ve been boxing since I was 18. I’m now 115 kilos so that’s averaging just one kilo more a year. And that’s down to how hard I work and live. To all the strength and stamina training and weight-lifting. To how I control everything I eat and how I dedicate myself to boxing. It’s my life. It’s pretty much all I do. And it’s expensive, the food and the drink and the lifestyle."

"I’m actually cutting weight now so it would be pretty odd if I was doing anything. By the way, all the anti-drugs programmes I’m signed up to cost plenty, too. I have to let them know where I’m going to be every day. I get random tested roughly twice a week round the year by VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) at a cost of £40,000 a test. And nothing. If ever there was something wrong in my next 10 years boxing it would be an accident. I don’t do anything."
