Mother of Missing 13 Year Old Answers Our Questions

On December 28th, 2010, Hailey Dunn, 13, was reported missing by her mother, Billie Jean Dunn.

We have questions about what happened to Hailey and it is that Billie Dunn, named Person of Interest by police, can answer our questions for us, in her own words, by listening to her answers on the nationnally televised show, The Nancy Grace Show.  We have questions and Billie Dunn answers them for us.

Question 1:   Is there hope for Hailey?
Question 2:   Was Billie Dunn jealous of Hailey?
Question 3:  Is Billie Dunn afraid of Shawn Adkins

Question 4:  Is Billie Dunn a sociopath?  a pathological liar?
Question 5:   What happened to Hailey?

Question 1:  Is there hope for Hailey?

Is there hope for Hailey?  Or, is Hailey dead?  Should we have hope for Hailey?  Can she be found?  Will she come home?  Was she kidnapped in the sex trade?
Here are the statements gleaned from the Nancy Grace Show in which the mother of a missing 13 year old child appeared.

Answer:  No, Hailey is dead.

GRACE:  Miss Dunn, how far did she have to go to get to the little sleepover?

Simple Question:  How far did she have to go?

DUNN: Four to five blocks. It wasn`t rare for Hailey to walk a short distance during daylight. She wasn`t allowed out after dark especially to walk, but she only had four to five blocks to go.

My assertion has been that Hailey died at night, in the dark, after her brother left at 9PM.

Did you notice something strange here?

"She wasn't allowed out after dark especially to walk"

The story that they tried to pass off her as their own (the one Billie Dunn lifted from the true crime library that Nancy Grace worked for) was that Hailey left Shawn to go to her father's house.

What time was that at?

They said it was at 3PM.

3PM.

Question, In Colorado City, on December the 27th or December the 28th, is it "after dark" at 3PM?

Why, then, did it enter the language of the mother, "especially after dark"?

Not once, but twice the mother of a missing child, in her first answer, referenced the child in the past tense.

When the parent of a missing child references the child in the past tense, it is an indication that the parent knows or believes her child is dead.  Susan Smith, Casey Anthony, Haleigh Cummings' step mother, Baby Lisa's mother, Baby Ayla's father...and on the list goes.

As of January 3, 2011,  when this was spoken, police had not given her any indication that her child was dead.

This goes against the natural denial aspect of a mother's protective instincts.  Even after a child is found dead, an innocent mother will still reference the child in the present tense as it goes against her own instinct to accept that her child is dead.

Billie Jean Dunn has given two linguistic indicators that Hailey is dead.  What she says next must be understood in this light.

Question:  Is Billie Jean involved?

Answer:    Yes

GRACE: Tell me what happened the day she went missing, Miss Dunn.

"What happened?" is the best question to ask. It is the perfect question that allows the subject to:

1.  Begin the account wherever she chooses.  The first sentence is always important.  She could choose to start it anywhere, but where she chooses is critical and shows priority.
2.  She will choose when to end the account.
3.  Her words are her own.  Nervousness is expected, which is why courts find the nervous 911 call so reliable and label them "excited utterance"; that is, to the courts, their words are, to the court, the most reliable, since the person is upset.
4.  Free Editing Process makes Statement Analysis reliable.  We do not interpret, we listen.

DUNN: She went missing on Monday while I was at work. My boyfriend - - he came home from work about 3:00 -- or he got to my house about 3:00. And he`s seen Hailey. Hailey was there. She told him, I`m running across the street to my dad`s house for a few minutes but I`m going Mary Beth`s, and I`m staying the night there. Let my mom know.

So that evening when he picked me up from work, we got home, we were getting ready for bed. I didn`t get worried when I hadn`t heard from Hailey. I thought she was at Mary Beth`s. I was kind of upset that she didn`t call and confirm it with me, but not worried at that point.

Tuesday, I was at work again, I left my cell phone at home for my kids to use when I`m working. So Tuesday, I called my son. I said tell Hailey text the little girl, her friend, tell Hailey she needs to go ahead and get home. This was around lunch. My son called me back within a few minutes and she said, mom, she said Hailey never made it over there. She never spent the night.

So at that point I called Hailey`s dad and found out she didn`t over there and she didn`t stay the night with him. I left from work and went to the police station in Colorado City and reported her missing.

This is important enough to view by itself:

DUNN:  She went missing on Monday while I was at work.

She chooses to begin her account by establishing an alibi.

This tells the audience that a priority for Dunn is establishing her alibi.  She went "missing" while Billie was at work, 3PM, "after dark"??

This shows how hard it is to keep up with lying.

Dunn was not asked "when did she go missing?" which means the question, "What happened to Hailey" is "sensitive" to the subject.

To an innocent parent, the question is not "sensitive" within itself.  The entire topic is very emotional, but "sensitive" is a word used in analysis.  When the father of Hailey Dunn was asked the same question, his answer showed no sensitivity indicators, though he was upset out of his mind.

To now be introduced to this case, the reader/analyst is immediately confronted with a mother who has indicated her child is dead, and is establishing an alibi for herself.

On January 3, 2011, the mother of Hailey Dunn indicated:

1.  Hailey is dead
2.  Mother needs an alibi

3.  Question:  Did Billie Dunn act alone?

Answer:   No, Shawn Adkins is involved.  This was something known from the beginning.  Many said "he did it, but she covered for him" or "he did it, but she was involved, so she could not report him..." and finally, "he did it, but he has something so bad on her that she had to go along with him in the planning, alibi building, etc.

What may have not begun as intentional, spiraled into a mess.  Violence, sex, drugs...

My boyfriend - - he came home from work about 3:00

1.  ISI (Incomplete social introduction)

Note first that she introduced Shawn Adkins without his name.  This is an improper social introduction and it is indicative of a troubled relationship.  That she takes ownership with the possessive pronoun, "my" shows that they are together, but in relation to the missing child, there is something less than good, as evidenced by the missing proper name.

Note that she knows how to use present tense and past tense verbs and uses past tense here.

2.  Note that she chooses the time "3:00".   We note this as the liar's number.

or he got to my house about 3:00

She allows for an "either/or" possibility reducing commitment to the story.  This allows for changes to be made later and shows the uncertainty of her account.  Why would the mother of a missing child, on high adrenaline alert, not have established, a week later, what happened and where her boyfriend was, or what time he got home?  This uncertainty is taken in context with the indication of death, and the need to establish an alibi.

Note it is "my house" which is expected.

And he`s seen Hailey. Hailey was there.

1.  A sentence that begins with "And" indicates the need for a connecting word = missing information.  It is a jump in an account.

2.  Redundancy means sensitivity.

"he's seen Hailey."  She establishes that Adins laid eyes on Hailey.  Extra words give us additional information.  This is critical.

"Hailey was there."

If he "seen Hailey", wouldn't she have to be there to be seen?

The extra words indicate deception.  It is the need to emphasize that Hailey was there, (alive is the presupposition she hopes the listener will accept, even though she spoke of her as dead) which shows deception.

Hailey was not  alive to be seen at 3PM.  It wasn't "after dark" out walking.  It is a fabrication and Billie Dunn chose a time frame in which she would be at work.  She had to choose a number off the clock and she chose the number 3.  Her story was lifted from the true crime library.

She told him, I`m running across the street to my dad`s house for a few minutes but I`m going Mary Beth`s, and I`m staying the night there. Let my mom know.

Communicative language is important.  We note that "said" and "told" are different.

"My boss said to take this to Main St." is one way of saying something but with more authority, "My boss told me to take this to Maine St." is another.

Here, she uses the more authoritative "told" regarding a 13 year old child speaking to an adult. This is not the expected.

As to the story of going to a friend's house, we later learned that Billie Dunn told Nancy Grace that she had "true crime" literature in her home, and it was the same material that Nancy Grace, herself, was associated with.  What is this reference?

It is reference to the case of Carlie Brucia who was abducted and killed.  The story line is the same.

Billie Dunn referenced where the case came from and gave a similar story.

So that evening when he picked me up from work, we got home

She then uses the very sensitive word "so" explaining her actions.  Why is this so sensitive?  It is so sensitive because she has the need to tell us why she did something.

Note another needless statement:  "we got home."

Look at the awkwardness of the entire statement.  What is the reason she has to explain that while driving home they got home?

we were getting ready for bed.

We listen to what someone tells us.  She only says "we" were getting ready for bed.  She does not say they went to bed, nor does she say they went to sleep.

There is a reason to everything that is said.  Always note when people say that they were getting ready to do something as it does not mean they did something; only that they were getting ready to.  There is a need to give a sentence of beginning something but not doing it.  When people do something, they say so.  When they may not have done something, they will often say they began to do something.  Did they finish it?  If they did not say so, we cannot say so for them.

Next, when speaking from memory, a person can tell us what they did, and what they thought.  If they tell us what did not happen, what they did not see, what they did not think, we are on high alert for deception:

didn`t get worried when I hadn`t heard from Hailey.

We now have a dead child, a mother establishing an alibi, and now she tells us of what emotions she did not have.

Deception indicated.

I thought she was at Mary Beth`s. I was kind of upset that she didn`t call and confirm it with me, but not worried at that point.

Since Hailey didn't say to Adkins that she was staying at Marybeth's, but "told" him, if the language was consistent, there should have been a report of a fight, or disagreement.  This inconsistency is noted.  She again reports what didn't happen:  Hailey "didn't call."

This is a truthful sentence and an example of how a sentence can be truthful while being overall deceptive.
Tuesday, I was at work again

Here is another case of a seemingly unnecesary word becoming of vital importance.  Why the need to say she was at work, "again"?

1.  It could be that she rarely works, and was per diem, and found herself surprised to be called in.  This is something a substitute teacher might say.

2.  She is continuing to work her alibi.

Since we have, in context, her establishment of alibi, the analyst/reader should see this as the subject seeking to affirm her alibi.  Later, we learned that this was her regular job and not a per diem or temp. position.

I left my cell phone at home for my kids to use when I`m working.

She now tells us why she did something, making "what happened?" into "why something happened" meaning high sensitivity.  She is setting up a scenario and explaining why she did something.

She is portraying herself as a caring mother.
Question:  Who portrays themselves in positive terms?
Answer:  those who have been negligent and have a need to persuade.

So Tuesday, I called my son. I said tell Hailey text the little girl, her friend, tell Hailey she needs to go ahead and get home.

1.  "So" explains why she did something, highly sensitive, rather than answering the basic "what happened?" question.

2.  Note the communication of what she said to her son:

a.  Tell Hailey
b.  Text the little girl
c.  her friend
d.  tell Hailey

The sentence begins strongly, with "I" indicating that she should be able to say what she said, but she isn't.  Why the confusion?  Tell Hailey via what means?  The phone?  She already said she left her phone home for her kids.  Text?  The "little girl" which is then explained as "her friend", and then back to "tell Hailey."

This was around lunch. My son called me back within a few minutes and she said, mom, she said Hailey never made it over there. She never spent the night.

She "said, mom, she said..." uses her title, "mom".  Note that economy of words from truthful statements are short: "he said..." yet she adds in "mom" as if story telling.

"never made it over there" is one thing but for the third time she gives us useless redundancy:  "she never spent the night".  It is useless since if she never made it there, she never spent the night.
So at that point I called Hailey`s dad and found out she didn`t over there and she didn`t stay the night with him. I left from work and went to the police station in Colorado City and reported her missing.

She returns to the explanation of why she did something.  In the SCAN tecnigue is colored as "blue", or the highest level of sensitivity.  A single indication of "blue" is sensitive, but where there is 2 or more, the analyst holds the paper up to the light and sees that in this area, between the "blues" is the most critical portion of the statement and where deception
is to be found.

In just where Hailey Dunn's mother spoke for only a few moments this is what we learned about a missing 13 year old:

1.  She is dead
2.  The mother has a need for an alibi
3.  The mother is making up a story about what happened:  she is deceptive.
4.  There is trouble with the boyfriend.

All this in just one answer to one question.

Without knowing anything about the police affidavit, investigation, or anything else, you already know that this is not a missing child case, but a homicide.

You also know it is a domestic homicide.

This is why defense attorneys do not let their clients speak.

Question 2:  Was Billie Dunn jealous of Hailey?

Answer:   Yes.

Nancy Grace took a call from the audience in which this was asked.

Here is her answer to this on Nancy Grace.   Dr. Lillian Glass said that Hailey was a "rival" for Shawn's attention and Billie Dunn was getting older, and as a former stripper, she only got by with her much faded and damaged looks.  Drugs, alcohol, cigarette smoke, and her life style all took its toll upon her self esteem.

So let`s go to the mom, Billie Dunn. What`s your response to Benay in New York that you were so jealous of your boyfriend`s attention to Hailey that you murdered her?

BILLIE DUNN: Wow. I`m definitely not jealous of her. I`m so proud of her for how smart she is, how pretty she is, how funny she is. She didn`t get any special attention from Shawn.
Was she jealous of Hailey?
1.  "I'm definitely not jealous of her" is to deny, plus add the word "definitely" to strengthen it.
2.  "She didn't get any special attention from Shawn"has her reporting what she didn't get.  What is "special" attention?  Is this something she did not want Hailey to have?  Is it something she wanted Hailey to have?  Nancy Grace said she was happy when her kids got attention from others.
3.  Below, "I'm not jealous" has the additional words "at all", making the statement:
"I am not jealous" repeated (sensitive) with additional wording, "definitely" and "at all" with the repeated denial.
She likely was very jealous and made sure, as a rival, that Hailey did not get Shawn's "special" attention.

GRACE: You know, another thing, Billie...

BILLIE DUNN: I`m not jealous at all.
Note that need to repeat.

Question 3:   Is Billie afraid of Shawn?

Answer:   No, but Shawn should be afraid of Billie.

From the transcripts we learn that she wasn't afraid to say he had mental retardation, and even when he threatened to kill Hailey and herself, she still invited him into the home.

When she portrayed herself as fearful of him or, as she did repeatedly, having "questions" about his involvement, she presented herself one way to police, in an "anti Shawn" position, but then hid him in her own home.

When she claimed to have been broken up with him, she was secretly meeting him in various locations.

Billie Dunn never showed fear of him, and even now she feigns on Facebook fearing him.  The profile of Billie Dunn that has emerged from her appearances on the Nancy Grace show indicates that:

She was in charge of Adkins
She made the decisions
She persuaded him that he could beat the polygraph
She, the older one, led him around, and was in control.

Where did the boyfriend work? What was his job?

"That morning, I drove to work. I quit my job. I turned in my belongings, and I didn’t speak to nobody at work, and I left work"

I briefly read the notorious Facebook page and Billie is potraying herself as a victim of Shawn. She states how she is going to contact her attorney about his threats. Why just not join the discussion, Billy? She LOVES the attention and Is trying to recruit more Billie supporters. Billie had a hand along with Shawn in Hailey's death. I pray everyday that one of them will rat out the other.

It stated that Shawn went to work at WSI in Snyder. He worked for a Company that does oil well casings and logging.

1)Hope her body will be found one day.
2)I would disagree that BD was jealous of Hailey. She seemed to demonstrate a propensity to delegate all parental duties to others. Her inital call in which she claims he threatened her life then wanted protection for the TV/Xbox was really her way of not wanting to lose her electronic babysitters. Then when she goes missing, once again she delgates to the son to text the daughter, has stated that Hailey could ask boyfriend for money instead of herself or her father. She delgates her transportation to others in getting a ride to and from work (perhaps necessity).
3)BD is not afraid of SA. She keeps calling him "boyfriend." Doubtful it would matter how scary he is as long as she has a boyfriend. She teaches Hailey to be afraid-I told her not to go "outside" the house but she didn't listen/she taught her not to confide in her or her father as neither could be trusted and should be feared/fear of darkness as she wasn't allowed to walk in the dark/...she is catering to the onlookers in her own reality show in which everyone should live in fear as they point out the world is a cruel and dangerous place. BD doesn't really think this but appeases the masses.
4)Sociopath/pathological liar? She knows her environment and knows how to survive within it.
5)Sometime after arriving home from work, around 3p.m and getting ready for bed (possibly prior to dusk)someone did something to the girl.

"he got to my house about 3:00. And he`s seen Hailey. Hailey was there. "

This is such an awkward statement. It gives a picture of a dead Hailey. He saw her, she was there.

Billie speaks in an unnatural manner because she is continually being deceptive.

I tend to think Billie was primarily responsible for Hailey's death because of her need to stress her alibi "I was at work" "I was at work again" "My boyfriend... he... he... he's... him"

I would not interact with Billie on her facebook because I suspect she is testing out what people think, what questions people are liable to ask, and what people are most likely to be deceived by, for her future use in court.

When You referred to the Crime Library in these articles, I couldn't help but recall a crime from Canada long ago. Karla and her husband Paul Bernardo were involved in sickening crimes. Karla worked for a Vet if I remember correctly, and they would use the drugs intended for animals on victims. Her husband craved young girls & both were perverted. She gave him her virgin Sister as a "gift" and it ended up that she (her sister) died. Considering Billie & Shawn's lifestyles and perversions, I think it may be very likely that this could be what happened.
If she is an avid reader of sickening crime stories, I am sure she would be familiar with that crime.....I have wondered if criminals actually get ideas for crimes from the detailed reports?

I am sickened by how many of these parents keep getting away with the most disgusting crimes against their own children.

I believe Hailey was dead before Shawn and Billie left for work on Monday morning. And I believe she was taken out of the house after Billie left for work and during the time Shawn's cell phone pinged at 6:30 a.m. in C City. If they didn't take Hailey out then, they would chance having David come home from his friends and seeing her there, in her bed, where Billie places her at 10pm the night before and at 6:00 a.m. when she is getting ready to leave for work. Billie states she saw Hailey in her bed, she didn't touch her, but she was pacified.

Bonnie, I think that they do. There is a saying that "whatever you feed, grows." Those who feed a sick obsession will see it grow out of control.

I took a quick look at the crime website Billie referenced and my own impression was that it was a voyeuristic presentation of crime.

Also, knowing Billie's style, I am expecting that she referenced the material that was the most innocuous in her collection; she implied all the material was from that site without specifically saying so. I'm going to guess some of it was from that website, and some of it was from worse.

"Wow." In this statement it means- "Wow- OMG -I can't believe you asked that question."
This is a false denial, along the lines of 'I will not dignify that question with an answer."

From past statement analysis: BJD was jealous, into porn, and obsessed with getting extra money. She was probably sexually abused as a child. SA was violent, perverted, and into slasher movies. He was also a little too interested in his girlfriend's daughter. BJD and SA often sold illegal drugs to pay rent. BJD was habitual liar and stole small items from her work. Together they appear to have staged an elaborate coverup. SA even stated to police that they share guilt for this crime.

What could possibly be an explanation for (healthy young) Hailey's untimely death that explains the long-term BJD/SA 'togetherness' afterword?? The explanation that SA raped Hailey and BJD helped cover it up makes little sense given the mother's jealousy. BJD must have been more deeply involved.

I believe that together they could have given Hailey a date rape drug, intending to then make porn pics or vidoes of a child. BJD/SA knew David was gone for the night, so maybe they intended to 'make Hailey earn her keep' by producing videos that they could sell. They may have accidentally killed her during this process.

For those of you who don't know; date rape drugs erase the victim's memory. (However an overdose can easily lead to seizures and death.) The drugs usually make the person vomit. BJD/SA may have planned for the drugged child to 'just sleep it off' the next day being completely unaware of any rape. BJD and SA could then sell the video to pedos for money.

Their sofa was soiled, in SAs truck for a while, and then discarded. It would be very interesting to know if it contained vomit.

But this scenario, IMHO, is one that could explain BJD and SA cooperation regarding her daughter's death.

Billie states she saw Hailey in her bed, she didn't touch her, but she was pacified.

But she was pacified. Pacified means satisfied. Billy was satisfied or glad that Hailey was dead. She would now not be able to tell on her nor take her boyfriend away from her.
