Statement Analysis: Order and Priority

"The important thing people need to remember is not slandering me. The important thing is there is a 13-year-old who it seems just disappeared into thin air."   Billie Jean Dunn, January, 2011

If I ask someone to name their children, I find that most will name their children in chronological order. Sometimes if a new baby is born, this child is named first.
Order can show priority.

I often ask children, "Who are your friends in school?"

They will name their friends in an order that is important to them, so listen carefully.
a.  Some will name kids by order of friendship
b.  Some will name the kid that sits closest
c.  Some will name the kid who is the bully
d.  Some will name the kid one has a 'crush' on...

Recall the fun stories from Christmas where before opening a present from my in-laws, I would slowly read the tag to make sure the kids gave me their full attention:

"To:  Heather and Peter, Love Mom and Dad" in which I would then take the gift and let Heather open it and, surprise, surprise, it would be something associated with the kitchen, as she loves to bake.

"To:  Peter and Heather, Love Dad and Mom" in which I would then say, "I think I shall open this one!" and the gift would be something more geared to me.

The kids quickly caught on and have learned to listen to order whenever one speaks.

Order is Important.

In job interviews, we ask people to describe their strengths and listen to what is listed first, and what is listed last (with the same asking about their challenges, weaknesses, and so on).

Where someone begins a statement is often the purpose for the statement.  In a lengthy list we sometimes see the "best saved for last"; but in a short statement, what is said first is often the priority.

The Expected Versus the Unexpected

Ask yourself what would be most important to you if your 13 year old child was missing?
Would finding her be the most important thing?
Would you even care what people thought of you?
Innocent parents care little for anything other than finding their child, often leaving off care of even eating or sleeping, and must be made to eat by supportive family and friends.  They care not for their own lives, and would not, for example, mention a toothache.  Everything becomes a shadow that fades because all that matters is what the child is going through, what the child is experiencing and if the child is okay.  Nothing else matters.  Justin DiPietro was "emotionally incapable" of negotiating with the kidnapper, he said. In other words, his emotional comfort outranked his child's safety.  This is the "unexpected" as we expect to hear a parent like Desiree Young (mother of Kyron), who cared for nothing but missing Kyron.   Statement Analysis showed that DiPietro had guilty knowledge that Ayla was dead, which is why his brain chose words about his own care:  he did not need to worry about her.

Statement Analysis deals with the 'unexpected.'

When Sergio Celis and Becky Celis gave a television interview for their missing 7 year old Isabel, whom they claimed was kidnapped, Statement Analyst Kaaryn Gough gave us a list of "expected" words to be heard during the interview; words such as "kidnap, ransom, money, phone calls..." and so on.

It was unexpected that none of these words appeared in the interview, yet the parents spoke about what they were going through, not what Isabel was.  Statement analysis showed that the parents had guilty knowledge that Isabel was dead.

Now take the same lesson to the ongoing case of missing 13 year old, Hailey Dunn.

Statement Analysis has shown:

a.  Guilty knowledge within both the victim's mother and the mother's boyfriend
b.  Indication from January 2011 that the victim was not missing, but deceased

This is from an article on January 13, 2011, Big country news article:  Statement Analysis is in bold type, with the quote in italics, with emphasis added for the lesson.

Setting:  Hailey has been missing for just over 2 weeks.  Police have not given any indication that she is deceased, but the mother has, linguistically, on The Nancy Grace Show.  Police had just released the affidavit in which we learned why the focused upon the mother and boyfriend.  http://bigcountryhomepage.com/fulltext/?nxd_id=331027

The affidavit is HERE

After saying there were several "persons of interest" in the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn during a Wednesday news conference, law enforcement in Colorado City has now revealed Shawn Adkins to be among them.  Adkins is the boyfriend of Hailey Dunn's mother, Billie Dunn.

Affidavits in the case show Billie Dunn and Shawn Adkins failed polygraph exams concerning Hailey's disappearance, held a party after reporting her missing, purchased illegal drugs, and continue to change the stories they're giving to investigators.
Authorities have not said whether Billie Dunn is also a person of interest.

"At this point we have interviewed hundreds of witnesses who have come forward and have followed 250 viable leads," Dean said.

Despite all the information found in the affidavits, there's no indication law enforcement is any closer to finding Hailey.

"The important thing people need to remember is not slandering me," said Dunn.  "The important thing is there is a 13-year-old who it seems just disappeared into thin air."

Here is the same statement with analysis:

"The important thing people need to remember is not slandering me. The important thing is there is a 13-year-old who it seems just disappeared into thin air."

This statement is rich with content.

1.  We note anything said in the negative as important.  It takes more effort (more words) to say something in the negative, making it sensitive. Here she gives two statements of what is "the important" thing, with differences.

2.  The order shows that "not slandering me" comes before her daughter "disappearing..." This means the priority for the mother is that she not be slandered.

3.  Note the differences between the two:

a.  Not slandering is "the" important thing that people "need to remember" but
b.  "thin air" is not given the same reminder to "people" as the "not slandering me" part of the statement.

This means that more words are dedicated to "not slandering" me than the daughter's disappearance.  We have "not slandering me" not only first, but also with more wording, giving it more emphasis.

4.  "thin air"  If Hailey has disappeared into "thin air" she cannot be found.  This is an indication that there is no purpose in searching and may explain, among other reasons, why the mother chose not to search for Hailey, even when Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, showed up at her door and asked her to come search with him.

5.  "thin air" is to be without "hope" for Hailey being found.  It is most unexpected for a mother to make such a hopeless statement because being in "thin air" means that she is asserting what police did not assert:  that there are no clues, and no tracks to follow in her disappearance.

6.  Note that it only "seems" to the mother to be in 'thin air' suggesting knowledge that she knows this is not the case.

7. Note that the emphasis upon what people "need" to remember is present about not slandering the mother, but absent about the daughter.

8.  Please note that "a" 13 year old disappeared into thin air, not "my" nor "Hailey", which would have been a direct lie, something people attempt to avoid whenever possible.  "A 13 year old girl" is generic during what should have been a highly personal setting.  It is impossible to imagine anything more personal than a mother and child relationship which was the bedrock of Solomon's wisdom in determining custody of the living child in Scripture.

9.  "thin air" does this refer to oxygen deprivation?

10.  If the mother was telling the truth about the victim, she would have said, "Hailey disappeared into thin air" had there been no clues nor persons of interest, nor anything for the police to go on.  However, it is not the case.

She said it only "seems" like; not that it was.  This is yet another example showing how difficult it is for someone to tell a direct lie.  It is rare and it is difficult.  It causes internal stress and humans avoid stress when they can.

The statement is shocking, but only if one begins the analysis with the assumption that the mother was uninvolved.

A week prior to this statement the mother made repeated past tense references to her daughter, as if dead.  "She was number one", she said, quickly correcting herself.

Remains found last month in Scurry county have not yet been identified though sources say that among the remains were evidence suggesting that the remains are those of Hailey Dunn.

...thanks to Boston Lady for the reminder of this quote which is rich in content.

Is "just" relevant? The sentence can be read without it.

In this context, just is assumed to mean something along the lines of "simply" ... she simply disappeared. Given that there's nothing simple about this...

Do the behavior analysts think it significant that billie chose "prison orange" for Hailey's t-shirt and ribbon color? I just thought of that as i did a double take on the headline photo.

Yes, CPS, I think that BJD was subliminally sending the message that she wants to spend time in prison. You are so smart.

How do you know that the remains did not have hair? Are you that Wizard in Colorado City that used to come to help BJD and SA with spells? I heard stories that they used to have rituals on the front lawn after Hailey got home from church on Sundays. They would even charge $5.00 a person. Sometimes the whole town would show up and they would make $20.00.

Excruciating Headache said...

At first, it seems like BJD is just ignorant and couldn't construct a coherent sentence if her life depended on it. But that's not the problem.

She is uneducated and her grammar and usage reflects that fact. What's more troubling than the actual words she uses is the order. So, I can imagine her saying, "I don't care what you think about me, but please remember that Hailey is still out there" or "Please keep the focus on Hailey and not your dislike for me. I love her and I want her safe at home." She could have a certain degree of self-centeredness but still convey her love for her baby girl and her desire for Hailey's safe return.

That's not what we get from BJD. (Sorry for always abbreviating. I kind of puke in my mouth every time I type out her entire name.) She's a disgusting bottomless pit of need. As much as I believe that evil is created and not inherent, I cannot FATHOM letting a man touch my little girl.

It wasn't even that she "just" let him have sex with her. She let him kill her. If I prayed, I would pray that they both burn in hell.

I just threw up in my mouth too. The last I checked, Hailey was a victim, not a sex partner to anyone. Do you have a link that says otherwise?

if BD is so stupid, dumb and uneducated, is it reasonable to think that she also gets her paragraphs backasswards?

the last point made is the only point people will recall, so why not say look for Hailey last. just the same as you wont recall anything i said in this paragraph other than my last sentence. that is why the last thing you say is the most important. people are only remembered by their last words.

I am wondering what Billie's internal definition of "slander" is.

Does it mean repeating her exact words and analyzing them?

Does it mean observing and remarking about her unnatural behavior?

Does it mean remarking about the blatant lies she told?

Does it mean remarking about the police reports, her drug use, the New Years party, her hobbies, the abundance of porn, her boyfriend, the S&M costumes and props, all the "bloodlust" videos, plus Shawn's odd behavior the day of Hailey's vanishing into thin air?

"I want to be somebody"

Is slander anything that interferes with this statement? or is adverse to Billie's perception of a "wonderful mother"?

Why are you a BJD apologist? Are you BJD? Did you let your boyfriend use and kill your own flesh and blood? Why are you so defensive?

I'm a mother and I would have cut SA's throat if I thought for even a SECOND that he was responsible. We all know what he is. We all know what you are. I mean, what BJD is. You can't play everybody for a fucking fool.

When Shawn said Hailey was promiscuous, I guess it says more about how Shawn viewed Hailey. Not as a young girl. And her mother viewed her as a rival. What about Hailey's brother, what does he know about it. He needs to step up and do the right thing for his sister.

I think the label "promiscuous" is,at least in part, because both Hailey AND her brother were known to run the streets of Colorado City.

In addition, the last scent of Hailey was picked up by dogs a at a local motel there in CC. I read that Hailey hung out there a lot, but I'm not so sure what was meant by "a lot". So I think SA's contention that she was "promiscuous" is that in his sick, warped mind, he took a partial truth and TRIED to make it absolute truth. Somehow, his assertion that she was promiscuous shifts the blame from him on to a 13 year old girl.

Sexual perpetrators use this blame shifting stategy all the time - she was a hooker, she slept around, she dressed provocatively (therefore "inviting" the sexual assault), etc., etc. His assertions that HD, a 13 year old girl was promiscuous, was a give-away right from the "get-go". What kind of man who actually cared for a child, and was frantic over her disappearance, would label her promiscuous?

promiscuous?? well if i didn't cause my 13 year old daughter to go missing, i would be thinking of any possibly as to the reason she didn't come home. and after a week of LE failure, i would be trying to help LE guess as to what may have happened. i mean really people, did LE even look on the basketball court for her? did LE look at the cheerleader practice session to see if she was there? did LE go to her church to see if she was there? seriously, if you think something bad happened, you look in bad places, right? like ugly fields and creeks? like in known crack houses. ask known gang members if they had her..... maybe go find the last guy that talked to her.

It's possible SA was carrying on a relationship with Hailey and swore her to secrecy. Hailey was a young, barely teen, an older guy interested, tells her he loves her and wished they could be together, she believes him. She having no sense of belonging anyway sees a future with a man who cares about her. BD finds them intimate, goes ballistic and attacks Hailey, goes to far, Hailey dies. SA afraid of BD reporting him for date rape and murder SA agrees to move the body and hide it. BD's jealousy so outrageous she agrees to keep sean to prove to herself she's still desirable and that SA really wants her and Hailey provoked him.
Crazy theory...but it is one.

How is what you are saying on a blog any different then what SA said? You are assuming that Hailey was promiscuous based on what? Rumors and lies and "unconfirmed reports". Those who went to church with Hailey knows what a nice girl she is.

March 2, 2011
I came accross this interview and thought some of billies replies were suspicious, to say the least.
When asked how Billie knew what Hailey was wearing when she hadn't seen Hailey since Sunday evening the 26th here's Billie's reply.
"No. No,he...he didn't let me know until, I guess, I was already talking with police after he got home. I had to ask him what she was wearing. He said 'some blue running pants, and a light blue colored shirt.' He didn't know what sweater, what shoes, or anything."
And more...
Q: you said Shawn said that she went to Mary Beth's that day?
B.D: yeah
Q:so he had time with her that day?
B.D.:HE DID HAVE TIME WITH HER THAT DAY, AT LEAST AN HOUR, AN HOUR AND A HALF.
Wtf???
Not to mention according to Billie in the same interview said
"I went to the police station, reported her missing. I got back home. One of the officers came over and was still talking to me, at my house. David came :n and said " mom Shawn called the phone. I told him what's going on. He said he's on his way home." So Shawn got there, and I mean, the rest of the day, that's where my nightmare begins. I just set on the couch, dumbfounded, not really knowing what to think."
That when her nightmare began. Not with her missing child. After the law was there and Shawn got home. Please also note that while Billie very rarely says hailey's name, Shawn's name is always present. She nearly always refers to him by name.
Just something I noticed. I'm not as skilled as others about statement analysis so I'm just putting these statements out there.

Wasn't Shawn's favorite movies the Halloween movies? Halloween= orange and black. They ( Shawn and Billie. Teamwork.) Picked the color of haileys ribbons. In mockery, perhaps? More of Billie's me, me, me personality?
Or maybe it was haileys fave color...one would hope they could at least give her that much after taking away everything Hailey could have been.

JusticeSeekingAnon. said...

Elf, if I remember correctly the colors were picked because way back when it was discussed what Hailey's favorite colors were, some said orange & some said purple. Note that on HFH tables, the vigils, etc... the colors are orange and purple.

I can't believe that the "mother" of this missing child didn't know her favorite color... and if she did know for definite, why the conflict & discussion that I remember them having? I don't have links or etc to back up what I think I'm referring to, but perhaps someone else will remember the mini discussions from the very beginning about why they chose the color/s that they did.

Praying for JUSTICE for Hailey! Can't happen soon enough.

Peter,
Your hypothesis of how Hailey died is reasonable.

It wouldn't take much for Shawn to seduce Hailey after three years of grooming her.

If Hailey had been seduced by Shawn she would keep it secret.

The immature live-in boyfriend seducing or raping the daughter of his girlfriend so he can do them both in the same house is all too common.

Billie would have noticed the innuendos between the two and the slow burn would have built up into an explosion. Or she would have denied it and had a "nervous breakdown" when she caught them together.
