Tawana Brawley Pays for Fake Hate

"All white men are rapists; just look at all the different color skins we have" said newly famous "Rev." Al Sharpton on the Phil Donahue Show, after taking the Tawana Brawley fake hate crime on national television. It was not a good time to live in New York watching racial tensions flamed for the explicit purpose of gaining traction for careers, via infamy.  Sharpton has made a good living off of producing hate.

They knew, from the very beginning, that they were propagating fake hate, but reassured themselves that it was for a good cause.

From NY POST

Twenty-five years after accusing an innocent man of rape, Tawana Brawley is finally paying for her lies.
Last week, 10 checks totaling $3,764.61 were delivered to ex-prosecutor Steven Pagones — the first payments Brawley has made since a court determined in 1998 that she defamed him with her vicious hoax.
A Virginia court this year ordered the money garnisheed from six months of Brawley’s wages as a nurse there.
She still owes Pagones $431,000 in damages. And she remains defiantly unapologetic.
“It’s a long time coming,” said Pagones, 52, who to this day is more interested in extracting a confession from Brawley than cash.

“Every week, she’ll think of me,” he told The Post. “And every week, she can think about how she has a way out — she can simply tell the truth.”
Brawley’s advisers in the infamous race-baiting case — the Rev. Al Sharpton, and attorneys C. Vernon Mason and Alton Maddox — have already paid, or are paying, their defamation debt. But Brawley, 41, had eluded punishment.
She’s now forced to pay Pagones $627 each month, possibly for the rest of her life. Under Virginia law, she can appeal the wage garnishment every six months.
“Finally, she’s paying something,” said Pagones’ attorney, Gary Bolnick. “Symbolically, I think it’s very important — you can’t just do this stuff without consequences.”
Pagones filed for the garnishment with the circuit court in Surry County, Va., in January, a few weeks after The Post tracked down Brawley to tiny Hopewell, Va.
Before The Post came knocking, not even her own co-workers knew she was the teen behind the spectacular 1987 case.
“I don’t want to talk to anyone about that,” Brawley growled after a Post reporter confronted her about her sordid past in December.
Employing aliases including Tawana Thompson and Tawana Gutierrez, she leads a relatively normal life by all appearances, residing in a neat brick apartment complex and working as a licensed practical nurse at The Laurels of Bon Air in Richmond.
She’s also raising a daughter, a neighbor said.
Brawley was spotted one morning emerging from her house with a young girl and a man dressed in hospital scrubs.
They left in separate cars — Brawley in a Chrysler Sebring and the man and child in a Ford Taurus. Brawley arrived at work about 30 minutes later, and the man pulled into the same lot minutes afterward.
Her current life is a far cry from the one she fled in upstate Wappingers Falls, NY.
She was only 15 when she claimed she was the victim of a crime whose shocking brutality sparked a national outrage and stoked racial tensions.

The two-decade-long saga that nearly ruined Pagones’ life and career began on Nov. 28, 1987, when Brawley was found in a trash bag, with the words “n----r” and “b---h” scrawled on her body in feces.
In her first meetings with police, the teenager responded to questions with blank expressions, nods and by scrawling notes. She said she had been abducted by two white men, who dragged her into the woods where four other white men were waiting.
But Brawley, a cheerleader, didn’t offer much detail. She didn’t give police names or detailed descriptions of the men she claimed had brutalized her almost nonstop for four days.

What she did share — that one attacker had blond hair, a holster and a badge — sparked a media firestorm in New York City, which was still reeling from the killing of a black youth in Howard Beach, Queens, by a white mob.
Firebrands Maddox and Mason and a relatively unknown Sharpton jumped into the fray. Within weeks, a suspect emerged — Fishkill Police Officer Harry Crist Jr., who had been found dead in his apartment three days after the Brawley “attack.”
But Pagones, a Dutchess County prosecutor at the time, defended his dead friend Crist, offering an alibi for the cop — they were Christmas-shopping together on one of the days in question. And on the three other days of the “kidnapping,” Crist was on patrol, working at his other job at IBM, and installing insulation in an attic.
Brawley’s handlers then claimed — without proof — that Pagones was part of the white mob that kidnapped and raped the girl 33 times.
Celebrities lined up to support Tawana, including Bill Cosby, who posted a $25,000 reward for information on the case; Don King, who promised $100,000 for Brawley’s education; and Spike Lee, who in his 1989 film, “Do the Right Thing,” included a shot of a graffiti message reading, “Tawana told the truth.”
A grand jury reached a different conclusion. The jurors, who heard from 180 witnesses over seven months, concluded in 1988 that the entire story was a hoax.
They determined Brawley had run away from home and concocted the story — most likely to avoid punishment from her stepfather, Ralph King, who had spent seven years in prison in the 1970s for killing his first wife.
Crist’s suicide was unrelated; he killed himself over a failed romance.
“It is probable that in the history of this state, never has a teenager turned the prosecutorial and judicial systems literally upside-down with such false claims,” state Supreme Court Justice S. Barrett Hickman wrote at the time.
For Pagones, the damage was done. His marriage unraveled, and he ended up leaving his job as a prosecutor. He continued to proclaim his innocence, making it his life’s mission to bring Brawley and her advisers to justice — and compel them to tell the truth.
In 1998, he won his defamation lawsuit. Maddox was found liable for $97,000, Mason for $188,000, and Sharpton for $66,000 — money that was paid by celebrity lawyer Johnnie Cochran and other benefactors.
Sharpton, now a national figure, has never apologized for his role in the hoax. Mason, an ordained minister who hasn’t practiced law since being disbarred in 1995, has remained mostly silent.
But Maddox, whose law license was suspended in 1990, continues the drumbeat for Brawley. He even tried to petition the Surry County court to halt the garnishment of Brawley’s wages.
He maintained that in New York, where the defamation case took place, two sets of laws apply.
“The common law applies to whites. The slave code still applies to blacks,” he said.
In a July 22 legal brief signed by Brawley and submitted by Maddox, Brawley contends she wouldn’t submit herself to the court’s jurisdiction because an appearance in the court, “which inferentially sympathizes with the Confederate States of America, would be contrary to the US Constitution and would amount to a ‘badge of slavery.’ ”
Brawley did not return messages seeking comment.
Pagones is still licensed to practice law but is now a principal at a New York-based private-investigation firm. He has remarried, has three daughters and a son, and lives in Dutchess County.
Brawley was ordered in 1998 to fork over $190,000 at 9 percent annual interest. She now owes a total of about $431,492 — a sum she could be paying for the rest of her life.
Or maybe not.
Pagones said he’d forgive the debt if Brawley admits the truth.
“I’m willing to consider anything,” he said.

I agree Trigger..its also telling to me that the others long ago paid their debts. She is the only one still holding out, filing ridiculous court documents about 'badges of slavery' (with the help of one of her supporters).

I'm impressed by Pagones' offer, he would surely be within his rights to demand every penny after what she has put him through...but now we will see how much conviction she really has to continue this charade when she can't pay her bills every month. (That is if one of these publicity whores doesn't step in to pay it off for her, which wouldn't surprise me).

When I google "All white men are rapists; just look at all the different color skins we have." the only hit I get is this post on this site. <"All white men are rapists." Sharpton> gets me 2 pages of hits, but none with a direct quote of Sharpton saying "All white men are rapists." I tried it all different ways including searches for Donahue, Sharpton Brawley. Looked at lists of Sharpton quotes. The closest thing I could find is this:

"You know it, Phil, and I know it. The fact that you've got 500 black people in this room and every one of them has got a different complexion means that white rape is a reality in the United States." which is far different from saying all white men are rapists.

http://www.nytimes.com/1988/06/16/nyregion/live-at-the-sanctuary-the-phil-donahue-show.html

It's a pretty damning quote and I find it hard to believe no one except Peter has ever quoted it on the internet. I don't like Al Sharpton, and if he really said that, exactly as placed in quotation marks, could someone help me verify it.

I haven't located the direct quote from Sharpton yet, but......

At least one other person thinks he said it. A commenter responding to the Don Imus situation said this. "Anybody remember when liberal radio host John "Sly" Sylvester called Conoleezza Rice "Aunt Jemmima" and Colin Polwell "Uncle Tom"? Remember all the protests led by Jessie "Who's Your Daddy" Jackson and Al "All White Men Are Rapists Because I Say So" Sharpton? Remember all the calls for the DJ to be fired?

Neither do I."

Peter, I am glad you cleared that up...that first line up there says 'rapists' not 'racists'.

Vicki

The exact quote should have been this:

"All white men are racists...look at the color of our skin."

Buckley said...

Aside from the change from "rapist" to "racist" the quote changed in other ways.

Original post: "just look at all the different color skins we have"

to

clarifying comment: "look at the color of our skin."

See, I'm not looking for clarification of what "the quote should have been" but verification of what "Sharpton said." I love analyzing statements, but I'd like to feel secure in the accuracy of these statements. Is the source your own memory of the show 25 years ago? I've checked youtube and cannot find it. A link would be great!

I think if we can verify this quote, we white men can sue Sharpton.

- Buckley

~ABC said...

This is soo interesting because the other quote I posted says RaPists too. Okay so now we know it was actually raCists. I'm still looking Buckley.

There has to be transcripts of the old Phil Donahue shows somewhere. The year would have been 1987 or 1988 and it may have been the episode that was broadcast live from the rally for Tawana Brawley.

Sharpton maintains to this day that he still believes she was raped! Of course he would have to because that situation is the cornerstone of his entire "career".

I had never heard of this case before so started reading last night.

I find it so very interesting that the sites that say she is lying say there was no proof. Which from what I can tell, nothing was every provided.

The sites that say she is telling the truth say there was proof but it was all covered up, hidden, etc.

I guess for me I tend to feel like this was really about "blacks" against "whites" from what I have read.

No where has this woman ever made an clear direct statments about what happened or done anything to back it up. To me, especially now with all the money she owes for defamation, I have to wonder why she is standing her ground yet making no statements about these claims she is lying.

Seems fishy to me.

And after seeing how the Trayvon case has gotten so much attention... Yet little to none for cases that the kids are in danger still and could be saved.

It's like people want to jump on a reason to blame whites for what is wrong rather than really caring about making the world a better place and changing what is wrong.

I mean, there is a case where a convicted rapist was granted custody of his little girl. The child he raped was his 6 year old step dauther. He has gotten out of jail and now his own daughter is 6 and he has full custody of her as we speak.

Where is all the support for that family and a little girl (who we know for a fact is innocent) and is in danger as we speak.

There are now crowds or masses running out on the streets trying to help this child get returned to ehr family.

I mean a black man killed a white man over Trayvon. Just because.

I think its safe to say if they want to kill someone for a cuause, go kill the child molestors that are roaming the streets free due to horrible decisions made by judges that have no right to be in power.

Yet time continues and no one learns.

Instead they still jump on the racist bandwagon and forget all that is really wrong in the world.

Shelley..the Wlkipedia entry covering Brawley is pretty good, as far as I remember it being reported at the time. Interesting to note she didn't speak to her police interviewer..only gestures and some notes. The grand jury recount is telling.

I too read about this for the first time here and then did research. I was afraid that just because a grand jury said she lied didn't make it so.

However, not only was there no proof to her claim, there was forensic evidence against her claim. There were witnessed that put her back at an apartment her family moved out off and was vacant during those 4 days. The poo that was on her body genetically matched that of a dog that lived at that apartment. Carpet fibers from that apartment were found on her as well as clothing items that were found there.

Her step dad was violent and she had stayed out late with her boyfriend. They believe she trumped everything up to avoid getting beat by her step dad.

That story adds up more than the other way does, for sure.

Over time blacks have played the race card, they claim to be derived of their rights, overlooked, abused etc because of their skin color, they grow up not only with a meg chip on thier shoulder, they also grow up with a sense of entitlement, you owe us big time because your people stole our people as slaves.

Lets back up a bit here.

If i recall correctly it was african tribes selling other tribespeople as slaves to not only the arabs but to whites and even their own tribes, hell it still goes on today.

Now many 'african-americans' and i so hate that phrase, you are born in america therefore you are an american, should be damn grateful their ancestors were taken from africa and sent to america, britain and whereever. Why?
If their ancestors had not been taken as slaves, then the huge majority of these people would not be alive today for a start, their ancestors would have died from interesting diseases and illnesses, tribal and civil wars and any number of other reasons we see all too often today. Those that managed to survive into adult hood would be pretty much illiterate and living a life of poverty, again as we see all too often today in africa.

Instead of going around with a chip on their shoulder and a huge sense of entitlement, they should be glad their ancestors were taken and moved to a new country. Granted their lives were harsh, they were treated as less than animals, slavery is an awful crime to commit against another, yet without it how many people would be alive today?
Instead of demanding repartion for perceived wrongs, they should be working their asses off to make something of themselves , to make something good come out of the crime of slavery, to make the suffering of their ancestors something worthwhile.
Where do we stop this claim of reparation because of something your people did to my people centuries ago?
heck do we start suing italy because they went around conquering nations and taking it's people as slaves? that france the uk, germany, eqypt, most of africam most of europe and so on, will tribes start suing their neighboring tribes because they sold prisoners as slaves to other tribes?, do we all get to sue the arab nations for slavery?

I hate the word african american, it is divisive, it is them and us, it is an excuse to cause discord, it is racist. In the uk we don't say i am irish-english, scottish-welsh, african scottish etc, we are all english, irish , scottish, welsh and/ or british. You get born in the UK you are british, you get born in america, you are american.

Once you all start to grow up and stop using color as an excuse then you will be a lot happier, ignore those who want to stir up racial discord, their power comes not from love but hatred, they thrive on the them and us, ignore sharpton and jackson and anyone who uses skin color as an excuse.
make the most of who you are, the opportunities made available to you. Don't expect things to be given freely simply because of your skin color, it is meaningless. Work hard for what you want and it becomes worthwhile, become someone not only you are proud of, that your family are proud off and the future generations will be proud off.

My own family background is mongrel, i have english, irish, scottish, welsh, romany, italian, norwegian and egyptian blood in my veins and probably a lot more if i go rummaging in our family bible, i could possibly be entitled to all sorts of things due to my romany heritage, i am english first and foremost and british, i refuse point blank to be considered european.

Stop living in the past, make the most of the present and leave a future for your children.

Tawana Brawley speaks out
By Pat Chin, Workers World, 18 December 1997

http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/45a/487.html

Tawana Brawley quotes
"I am not a liar, nor am I crazy."

BRAWLEY TELLS OF ‘PAYOFF’ ATTEMPT
Brawley told the Brooklyn meeting that Pagones had offered to end her liability in the case if she would testify against Maddox. Brawley blasted his offer as a payoff.

"There’s not enough money on this planet" to make her accept the offer. "It’d be like I said it didn’t happen—but it did."

Brawley continued that Maddox "has been my attorney for the past 10 years and hopefully he will always be my attorney."

She was afraid to speak out before, Brawley said, "because I was ashamed of what happened to me and because I was ignorant. I didn’t know the lengths they’d go to—they, the media. But I’m here and I’m not going anywhere."

"For 10 years they were lying to you," she added. "You should feel that the hoax was pulled on you."

Referring to charges from the racist and sexist capitalist establishment that she and her advisers caused problems with race relations, Brawley retorted: "We didn’t cause any ruckus. It was already there. We just woke it up. . . ."

"What happened to me happens to hundreds of thousands of women. I’m not the first in Dutchess County, and I won’t be the last."

Etymology: Latin decimatus, past participle of decimare, from decimus tenth, from decem ten
Date: 1660
1 : to select by lot and kill every tenth man of 2 : to exact a tax of 10 percent from 3 a : to reduce drastically especially in number b : to cause great destruction or harm to <an industry decimated by recession

It just reads more like a story rather than a tragedy.

This why I think I leaning more towards it being a lie than truth.

Alex Rodriguez Vows To Fight Doping Suspension.

Baseball's highest-paid star says he will clear his name after Major League Baseball hands down its longest ever doping penalty..

New York Yankees player Alex Rodriguez says he will appeal against a decision to ban him for doping, adding that he plans to keep playing for the team until he is cleared.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has suspended its highest paid player for 211 games - a suspension that extends through to the end of the 2014 season.

But the Yankees third baseman immediately announced he would challenge the suspension, which is due to start on Thursday.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed with the news today," Rodriguez said at a press conference in Chicago, where he was scheduled to play for the Yankees against the White Sox on Monday night.

"There's no question about it, but what we've always fought for is for the process and I think we have that and at some point we'll sit in front of an arbiter and ... give our case.

"That's as much as I feel comfortable telling you right now."

Another 12 players - including three Major League Baseball All-Stars - have been handed 50-game suspensions.

The penalties follow a long investigation into links between star players and a Florida clinic accused of supplying them with performance-enhancing drugs.

Rodriguez' ban is the longest doping penalty ever handed out by MLB and he stands to lose about $36m (£23.4m) in pay if the suspension is upheld.

Although Rodriguez has never been punished for doping, he has previously admitted to using steroids, but said he stopped using them about a decade ago.

The 38-year-old is currently fifth on the all-time home runs list with 647 home runs, but the ban threatens to ruin his prospects of becoming the all-time leader.

The Yankees' game against the White Sox is Rodriguez' season debut and follows a lengthy recovery from a pre-season injury.

Speaking ahead of the game, Rodriguez added: "I am thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to put on this uniform again and to play Major League Baseball again.

"All of it (the drugs investigation) has been challenging. (But) we're here now. I'm a human being. I've had two hip surgeries, two knee surgeries. I'm fighting for my life.

"I have to defend myself. If I don't defend myself, no one else will."

Rodriguez earns around $25m (£16m) a season with the Yankees and is under contract to the end of 2017.

MLB has a murky history concerning doping allegations and the sport's administrators have been heavily criticised in the past for a lax approach.

HI Dagum.

I don't understand why Caylee's law isn't applied right across the USA..I would like to see the same in the UK..

Caylee's Law was introduced in several states after the mother of a Florida toddler was acquitted.

Casey Anthony failed to report her 2-year-old daughter missing for nearly a month in 2008. The girl's body was later found in some nearby woods.

North Carolina's version of the law goes into effect in December. Any parent who does not report a child missing within 24 hours will be charged with a felony.

Anyone else who suspects a child is missing and doesn't report it faces a misdemeanor.

Since it goes into effect in December, and laws are usually not retroactive..my take on it is it will only affect those who go missing after December. I do not understand these people..any of them. Thankfully.

Hi dadgum,

I was just about to post this..

I found this sentence a little odd.

“I thought they were sleeping until I saw the hole in the ceiling. I turned the lights on and I saw this horrific scene,” he said.

So he goes into the bedroom, and not until he see's the hole in the ceiling does he realise that they were not asleep.

He see's the hole, and then turns on the LIGHTS on,should that not be the other way round?

LIGHTS=Possible abuse?

More statements needed.

Peter or one of you that have gotten good at SA. I took the liberty of typing up the words for a video I found where Tawana was speaking. Not sure if its too late to be as critical at the time of the video, but this case had been very interesting to me.

I am not sure who is asking the questions but based on a comment he made later about "being there" back when this was all going on, he must be close to the case. Maybe an attorney? He was clearly on her side.

Interview is on youtube. Titled: Tawana Brawley-Tawana 2009

Interviewer was talking to Tawana and her mom and he stated that this has had a tremendous affect on their lifes. And asked them who would like to talk first. Tawana then began to speak.

anywhere I have "....." is due to a long pause .

Um…hi
Im nervous….
Um, Well….i know that a lot of women in ? get raped. So I can’t speak for everybody…….
But even though it was like over 20 years ago, every time the word is mentioned… or my whole name is mentioned….it shakes me to my core… and I get stiff….and scared….like it just happened

And um, (unable to understand)…. People will understand that.

They don’t understand….. that when something….something that horrific happens to you and even though your physically fine and you can walk around from day to day… you hear the word on television or…just anything….soap operas we watch….. just anything, it makes me afraid… and im just a regular person, im not an extraordinary person, just a regular person.
I think im a good person.
I try to do the right things.
But….and I try to block it out. I try to think it was somebody else, not me
But when it comes back in your face, like every once in a while (unable to understand) come, they get what…. 10 year anniversary, 20 year anniversary.. whats happening now whatever.. Um, I freeze up. And I can’t move. And Im just sitting there and im listening to all the things that happened to us. And you would think it was a movie, like something that’s unreal, all the things that happened to my family.
People pulling guns out on a teenager and a 2 year old and a mother and father. Not being able to go to school. When you do go to school, people look at you funny, talk about you… to your face.. and behind your back…or whispering to the side but you can see it.

*******************************
****She then talks about her parents support. I didn’t write down that piece as it was not about her and was not sure it was as relevant******

At this point, she was asked by the interviewer why she didn’t speak back then. The guy commented later to also comment that her lawyers told her not to talk and he knows because he was there. So I am not sure who is speaking (anyone know?) but he was clearly involved in this in the beginning.
This was her explanation for NOT speaking up about what happened to her back then
*******************************

Well, in the beginning, I physically couldn’t talk.
Um…. And then later on, so many people were talking for me and about me…. And I didn’t see any progress or anything… I just wanted to curl up and die.
I wasn’t proud of being a rape victim.
I am not one of those people who like to go on talk shows and say…. Well, this is what happened to me…
I don’t see how people could do that… Im not built that way.
I was ashamed….. I didn’t want to say it….. then it would be too real.
I think for a long time I was like, ok, they don’t believe it… then it didn’t happen…. Good.
I didn’t want to believe it. I still don’t want to believe it.
But….. it doesn’t go away

I saw the comment about Roy Owens. I googled it and got this article as well which was written on August 1st.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -
Colorado City Police Chief Roy Owens has resigned for family reasons
City Manager David Hoover said Owens wife has been in San Angelo taking care of relatives. Now, their health has gotten to the point where Chief Owens is needed to help as well.
Chief Owens resigned, saying he was away from Colorado City too often to continue his job.
Owens took over running the Colorado City Police Department in 2011, shortly after the disappearance of then missing teen Hailey Dunn. Dunn's body was found in Scurry County March 26. The remains were identified April 26.
Hoover said, " We wish him the best and hope everything turns out well for him and his family."

He was not the one that found her body, correct? Anyone recall?

Local anon in the Hailey Dunn case said...

No, he was not the one who found Hailey's body. The person who found her body was a corrections officer from Big Spring who was hunting for arrowheads.

Carney argued that the president was referring to central al Qaeda based on the AfPak region. He also noted, correctly, that the administration has regularly argued that al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is the most dangerous and operational arm of the terrorist network. That said, let’s be realistic. The public is simply hearing “al Qaeda” –

I know I'm being a pain in the ass about this quote. I really like this site and statement analysis and hope I can add to the discussion in a positive way; I've learned a lot. And I'm not defending Sharpton or the moronic things he says. My points are that, if you are going to accuse someone of lying, do so in an honest way. Second, if you put quotation marks around a statement, it means you are sure that's what the person said. Especially important on a site where the main focus is analyzing statements. OK, nuff said.

This part of her statement stood out for me.

Notice the change in pronouns. Now why would she want to share something that is very personal to her. It's her body that's been violated, and attacked,Who is the "US" that the things happened to.and if it is more than one person that this happened to why havn't they come forward.

For me this change in pronoun is very significant and show's deception on her part...

UPDATE:

Python that killed two N.B. boys was in enclosure near where they slept, friend says.

Snipped:

African Rock Pythons are prohibited in New Brunswick. But the huge snake one friend says was part of Jean-Claude Savoie’s “private collection” lived in an enclosure in Savoie’s apartment, very close to the living room where the Barthe brothers were sleeping over Sunday night.

That room’s now being treated like a crime scene. The python’s been put down. And investigators are trying to figure out how a snake known more for timidity than ferocity escaped its cage and killed two kids it shouldn’t have seen as food.

It used to be operated as a zoo, MacDonald said, but Savoie “decided to become a pet store and basically let everybody view the animals for free.”

“So he stopped taking admission and just ran the pet store downstairs. The stuff upstairs was kind of his private collection.”

And while many of the reptiles on the first floor are for sale, MacDonald said, this python was not: Its place was in Savoie’s apartment, where wood-and-glass enclosures acted as room or hallway partitions, giving the place a zoo-like feel.

This particular python’s enclosure, made of wood, fibreglass and epoxy with a thick glass display window, was built to hold crocodilians, MacDonald said. Its previous inhabitant was a much larger anaconda. So it should have been strong enough to hold this snake.

Each of these enclosures also had vents in the top linking up to a ventilation system to help the animals breathe, MacDonald said.

“But to my knowledge, from what I remember, all of them did have covers,” he said.

“But to my knowledge, from what I remember, all of them did have covers,” he said.

RCMP have said the snake reached the two boys through a ventilation system.

The python was euthanized Monday, and is undergoing necropsy to figure out what might have prompted the apparently unprovoked attack

The definition reduce by one in ten is occasionally cited as "the correct" definition, with severely reduce considered a misconception, arrived at by reading decimate as to reduce to one-tenth rather than by one-tenth.

The Cambridge Guide to English Usage states that the nonspecific use of this word to mean devastate or severely reduce the numbers of is "nowadays the commonest use of the word in both British and American English, and it’s registered without comment in modern dictionaries." It also advises against using numbers with the term, as "They are redundant where it means 'reduce by one tenth', and where it doesn't they confound the arithmetic."

I'm having a hard time buying this story about the snake killing those two boys. I know nothing about snakes, but common sense tells me that if the snake was constricting and squeezing a young boy to death, it would not be a quiet process. Certainly not quiet enough to not be heard/noticed by the other boy sleeping in the room with him, so silent that after its killed one boy, the snake moves on to also squeeze the second boy to death too!

Even if I try to imagine it happening as a precise scenario, where the snake constricted them BOTH at the same time, around the neck so neither could cry out (very unlikely)..it still seems that thrashing and efforts to escape would have alerted others in the home.

I have a feeling more will be revealed about this case, especially since the owner lied about the snake being kept in the pet shop, and breaking into the house...why lie, unless the whole story is made up? It doesn't excuse his stupidity for keeping a deadly snake like that around, or make the kids any less dead if he was storing the snake downstairs or upstairs.

Anonymous said...

so silent that after its killed one boy, the snake moves on to also squeeze the second boy to death too! ...
The boys had played with farm animals before the sleep over, a snake expert says that the animal smell may have attracted the snake

Jen said...

I could totally be wrong, but I still can't imagine how the commotion wouldn't wake (at least) the other boy or others in the home. How did the snake get wrapped around either of them without waking them in the process, or at least waking the other boy in the room thru the first boys thrashing/trying to escape?

The whole story just seems unlikely to me...one boy maybe...but both, without anyone being alerted? I just can't imagine how.

Where as this case with Tawana is much older and was prior to online transcripts being available online shortly after the show aired.
