WWII Vet Beaten to Death By Black Teens

WWII veteran Delbert Belton survived being wounded in action during the Battle of Okinawa only to be beaten and left for dead by two teens at the Eagles Lodge in Spokane on Wednesday evening.
Belton, 88, succumbed to his injuries Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
Witnesses say Belton was in the parking lot of the Eagles Lodge at 6410 N. Lidgerwood, adjacent to the Eagles Ice-A-Rena, around 8 p.m. Wednesday when the two male suspects attacked him as he was about to head inside to play pool.
Police responded with K-9s to track the suspects' scent but were not able to locate them.
"It does appear random. He was in the parking lot, it appears he was assaulted in the parking lot and there was no indication that he would have known these people prior to the assault," Spokane Police Major Crimes Detective Lieutenant Mark Griffiths said.
Belton died from his injuries Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
"Shorty," as he was known by his friends at the Eagles Lodge, served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WWII and was shot in the leg during the Battle of Okinawa. He went on to work at Kaiser Aluminum at the company's Trentwood plant for more than 30 years. Belton's wife passed away several years ago.
He loved playing pool, even though he claimed he was no good at it and had been a member of the Eagles Lodge for the last four months. In addition to playing pool he loved working on cars.
Shorty was Ted Denison's best friend of 23 years; the two played pool occasionally and worked on cars daily.
"He was always there for me when I needed him," Denison said. "We'd joke back and forth. We were always having fun, some sort of fun."
He was the kind of nice old man who'd become your friend in minutes.
"Probably every time I come into town, he'd have a project for me to do," Denison said. "I thought of him more as a dad than I did a friend really."
Now, with the suspects still at large and the Spokane Police Department working to track them down, Shorty's friends are hoping for justice.
"I don't understand how somebody could do this. I really don't," Denison said.
Spokane police are looking for two male suspects in the attack. They said the suspects are African Americans between 16 and 19 years old. One suspect was described as heavy set and wearing all black clothing. The other was described as being about 6 feet tall and 150 pounds. There was no description of what clothing the second suspect was wearing other than a silk do-rag.
Police investigating the deadly attack on Belton have also obtained surveillance footage from the scene. Click this linkto see still images of the two suspects in the attack.

ARE the murdering scum "black"?

It should be said the the suspects ARE black. If it was the other way around, it would be stressed the the suspects were white, asian, white hispanic, or whatever. This should be a hate crime. Hate against another race, hate againt the elderly.
It takes one low-life piece of scum to attack an 88 yr old. I hope the other, younger lodge members go out and hunt them down. I also wish this man had a CWP and was carrying at the time of the attack.

They will end up in prison. There is a problem in this country. There are too many young people who are uneducated, unemployable, and have no moral guidance. The only solution I can think of is to push birth control and take away incentives for having children. Our prisons can only hold so many criminals. Our social services can only take away so many children. Education and economic opportunity are unavailable in many areas of the country.

We have a lot of "lost boys" who are going to continue to rob and murder and generally wreak havoc on society. We need to make sure they don't have children. So far our government and communities are completely impotent when it comes to holding deadbeat fathers accountable for the children they bring into this world.

As far as I know there isn't an evil gene tied to skin color, but an evil culture exists in our country and the only way I know to eradicate it is to stop them from creating a new generation.

I am outraged..and waiting for Obama to speak of 'this could be his grandfather, the boys could have been him...'

Maybe the gentleman asked for it by profiling them, or adding to their boredom, or just by being in their way.

Or was he vulnerable, and easy prey..

"holding deadbeat fathers accountable for the children they bring into this world."

the father has no say or choice to abort. how can you hold them accountable for a decision they couldn't make?

Stuart said...

Anon, I hear they have these thingies you can put on that are supposed to be pretty effective at preventing children.

I AGREE, dadgum!

Predators go after easy prey. They didn't care that this man was a wounded warrior and senior citizen.

This is a special victims' crime and a disgrace to America.

Deadbeat fathers will never take responsibility for their children. It is too risky.

Waiting for the outrage on race crimes from Oprah, Jackson, Sharpton, Obama...waiting, waiting, waiting....(cue crickets...)

To me, the only reason skin color enters in is because of the fervor created.

The shocking thing is that these are our young people, our future. This mindset is becoming more common due to outside influences, lack of strong family values, and value-free education.

We are to honor our elders. Respect them, and recognize what they have learned throughout their lives. Not see them as our potential victims. Elderly..infants in strollers..schools..disabled (look up the stories of mistreatment of those in care homes, specifically a brain injury center in Florida.)

Where's all the condemnation of race when crazy white boys carry loaded weapons into our schools?

This is horrific. An 88 year old man who was basically defenseless beaten to death by thugs. Just like the australian boy, killed because they could.

This is a horrible world if this is allowed to continue.

Waiting for Obama to speak out on the international incident and now this. He has set a precedent by speaking out in the Trayvon Martin case.

He WONT speak Out because its THEM that voted him in.

We live in a nation that has devalued life for a couple of generations then we're shocked and ask 'why?' when kids don't value it? They know they've been fed a lie of convenience and now they are throwing it back in the faces of the generations that invented and legalized that lie.
It's simple.
If it doesn't matter if you are allowed to be born, then it doesn't matter if you are allowed live or die after birth. And if it doesn't matter if you live or die, it follows that it doesn't matter if anyone else does either.

I wondering if this was because of Trayvon? I have heard people say that they were gonna kill a white person because George was found not guilty.

Not that any one is gonna come out and protest this.

Spay and neuter people!

I am just saying.

These losers are a product of their parents in most cases. Sure you get the occasionaly crazy.

But that is rare.

Bad people are having kids who grow up to also be bad.

And the cycle does not stop just increases that population every year.

I have a relative that had 5 yes 5 kids taken away by the state. After one, you should be "fixed". Period!

Its very rare that people like that change.

And yes, I am acting like they are animals... they do what they want with out conscience.

Sure would solve alot of problems

Racism is reaching a fever pitch - evidenced by a lot of these comments. I am afraid for our future generations. However, more than racism is at play in these latest headlines. When multiple teens with a skewd sense of entitlement take it upon themselves to beat to death a defenseless man, there is WAY more wrong than just the race issue. Which clearly is alive and well...no matter what people want to argue, when another entitled teen posts that they hate 90% of whites and then partakes in the shooting death of a white man, that is racism. Pure and simple - I don't care how many months ago his post was.

Anon up a few posts, why would people be screaming the race issue when a white boy shoots up a predominantly white school? That isn't race, that is something else entirely, equally frightening, but something else entirely. AND every article I have read about those shootings, people are extremely outraged. Now, when a white boy does attempt to shoot up a school that is not predominantly white, obviously there may very well be a race issue, but there might also be an economic issue, or a untreated mental illness issue...and again, I haven't seen once where the public isn't outraged.

There are so many factors playing into these heinous crimes, and without addressing them, instead of flinging poo around about the race issue and our President, blah blah blah, our prospects for the future are pretty dim. And we all know in dim lighting, is it really going to matter what skin color we are? Or what skin color our President is? Are we seriously going to hang our hat on this one card, the race card, and forget about the rest? What happens if we get a female President next, does that mean it will miraculously be a gender issue? No.

We are dealing with lack of love of our neighbor, lack of teaching our children the proper respect for one another, especially those who are more needy. Compassion, empathy...I know these virtues are not very popular these days and I am sad for the loss of them.

My sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Delbert Belton.
Thank you for fighting the good fight in a very dangerous time, sir.

I’ve been exposed to a great degree of racism in my life since childhood and it is directly linked to the same war that Mr. Delbert Belton fought in. My paternal grandparents were supporters of Adolf Hilter while he was still alive and they even continued after he was dead. It’s fascinating to hear what comes out their mouths. You hear how terrible and greedy and weak the Jews are, how awful everyone from Poland is, how incredibly worthless gay people are. So on and so forth. I remember hearing that Hilter was a great hero and how he was trying to make a better world for all of us.

I’m lucky that my father is awesome. My dad has a mind of his own and this gives him the ability to think above ignorant hate, even if it’s being spewed by the people who created him and raised him up, and come to his own conclusions. In kind, he taught my brother and me to do the same. He taught us that what people choose to do and who they choose to be is more important than what they are.

The difference is quite clear, here’s an easy lesson. Did you choose to be white? No. Did the suspects choose to be black? No. Did you choose to make a comment on this blog? Yes. Did they choose to beat an old man to death? Yes. People should be judged and held accountable for the choices they make and only that.

Here endeth the lesson.

~mj: I love your post and I agree with your points - all of them. It's excellent, well-written and very valid. I'm still cheering over it.

I feel that it's a very important point to encourage love for your neighbour, respect for one another, compassion and empathy in the young - it's how we can change the current generation for the better. I believe it would do more to improve and benefit the world than putting procreation and birth in the hands of the government.

People in power never fail to abuse it - even those with good intentions. If you are convinced this sounds like a viable solution, please read 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood. It's the basic premise of the novel - very 1984 in it's style.

Personally I don't like the idea of another person deciding the terms of how I use my uterus. This may be just me, of course. I like having power over my own body and my innards, it's a thing.

What is important is the content of your character and not the color of your skin. Meanwhile ACLU thinks the 10 commandments are a threat, and Hollywood continues to portray bling and money as God. The constant violence in movies does not help. Why I don't see any Hollywood vacuous movies. A moral code is important, something as simple as "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is an excellent start.

RIP, Mr. Delton, you are deeply loved and appreciated.

Sadly we cannot chose our parents. Too many damaged people having children who pass their sufferings onto their children. Some thankfully use their own painful history to learn from and do better. Unfortunately, they are too few. Making money thru welfare for popping our babies is an abuse.

The Great Society of Lydon B Johnson - a big failure.

As long as this country has children who grow up in broken homes, homes filled with violence or violent parents, raised with no morals or lack of them, left unsupervised, uneducated, etc. etc. this kind of violence will continue. I don't want it to sound like I am not blaming these killers but if you are raised like an animal or worse you will turn out like one. Then somewhere along the line, the innocent are left to suffer. I don't know what the answer is. We can't stop every crime before it happens. This case is so sad. This man didn't deserve this.

As an aside, it's interesting we don't hear the president claiming, "If I had a son, he'd look like..."
