Missing: Amber Rose Smith

A search underway in Newaygo County tonight for a missing 2 1/2 year old girl.
Police say Amber Rose Smith disappeared from her home on 13 Mile Road in Barton Township around two this afternoon.
She was last seen by her father, who worries she may not have just wandered off.
Police say there are no clues that lead them to believe this was a kidnapping.
Amber's dad told 9 & 10 News that within the past two weeks, they've had two suspicious cars near their home.
One of those cars, a green pick up truck, called out to Amber while she was in the driveway.
"Just if somebody took her, just please bring her back to me because she's my baby. I've got 8 kids, but she's my baby. I want her back," pleaded Amber Smith's mom, Diane Smith.

Follow the pronouns.  This shows a very strong connection.  Bring her back to "me", not "us";
She is "my" baby. "I" want her back.  This is expected from a parent.  It is the expected response and is appropriate.
Note that the word "please" is appropriate.
Hours into the search for 2 1/2 year old Amber Smith, her parents, and police are searching for her, or some clue as to where she could be.
"We're searching about one-square mile, right now that one square mile is inside our search parameters right now," explained Lt. Chad Palmiter of the Newaygo County Sheriff's Department.
K-9 units, ATV's, helicopters, and searchers on foot combed the wooded area around Amber's home, where she was last seen wearing a black tank top with a pink stripe in the front, and pink bow in the back. She wasn't wearing pants or shoes.
"She went outside when I was in the back of the house, I came out just a few minutes afterwards, the front door was open," her father, Dale Smith, explained.

I would like to know what happened in the time period just before "afterwards"; this is where I would bring him in the interview.
Her parents say Amber has wandered off before, turning up moments later. This afternoon was different.
"I went looking everywhere I could think," Dale said,  "the neighbor's house, all the properties, yelling for her, even into a megaphone and didn't hear anything back from her."
Police say their search for the toddler will continue throughout the night.
"We're gonna go as long as we can tonight, obviously with the weather tonight we're looking at I think upper 40's, that's cold especially for a 2 1/2, 3 year old," says Palmiter.
As the search for Amber creeps later into the night, Amber's parents are left asking themselves the hardest of questions.
"It's hard not knowing, wondering where's she at, is she ever going to come home?"
Amber has hazel eyes and blonde hair. An Amber Alert has been issued.
Anyone with information on Amber's whereabouts should call 911.

Peter,
What do make of the mother saying, "I've got 8 kids, but shes my baby."?

It's extra info and sounds like she is justifying having Amber Rose. She even validates Amber Rose (but she's my baby.)

Why does she feel the need to justify having Amber Rose? Did someone tell her she shouldn't have another baby? Does someone gripe about too many children?

Where is trying to justify having this child? Seems you are the one that has a problem with it. Advice to you-If you don't want 8 children dont have 8 children

Do you have a link to the story? I can't find much current information about this case.

"I have 8 kids, BUT she's my baby."

"But" refutes the first phrase. In the second phrase (after but) she is telling why Amber Rose is important to her.

A mother doesn't have to tell the public why her baby is important to her. We assume her baby is important to her...thus extra info.

Thanks for the advice. I'll take it to heart.

Maybe mom, with her "I've got 8 kids, but she's my baby" comment had a thought that MAYBE someone stole her child thinking that she had so many, she could share. Trust me on this, moms with lots of kids hear jokes and chiding sometimes from childless friends, or friends unable to have more kids, 'you should give me one,...awww....but you have so many'. So that comment I think I understand.

It bothers me that dad has a temporal lacuna and mentions this child wandering off before. The first time your kid wanders off you get some door alarms, or do something so that it doesn't happen again. If she had time to "wander off" so far she couldn't hear daddy yelling in a megaphone he lost track of time (in my opinion).

I hope they find this little girl, and I hope they don't have some drowning lake or stream or uncapped old wells..... :(

8 kids? Wow. That's alot of kids to keep track of. I noticed that someone mentioned the father had been in the restroom and the baby was gone when he came out... I think it was on the last page of comments from Peters article yesterday ... is restroom a sensitive word like references to water, bathing, washing?
I would also wonder why the doors and any exits were not toddler proofed given that little amber rose had previously gotten away from her parents? Especially since she is special needs.

Wonderful! She was found in the woods with only some bruises and scratches.

Peter,
I agree with you that using the word afterwards is strange and he should be interviewed. After what?
This lil one is so beautiful!
It seems to me that ever since the parents got away with baby Lisa Irwin missing that other parents are using the same aliby.

What about starting her statement with "just"? Doesn't that minimize her statement. She uses it twice.

"Just if somebody took her, just please bring her back to me...."

"if someone took her" the other option would be she wandered off. By saying "if", is she saying she is still not sure which it is?

"bring her back" vs "bring her to a hospital, church....." it would be unrealistic to think that a kidnapper will bring the child back to the parents directly.

off topic

Hannah Anderson's kidnapper, James DiMaggio, taunted the teenager by suggesting she join him in playing Russian roulette, she says in her first lengthy interview.

"When it was my turn, I started crying and was freaking out," Anderson, 16, tells the Today show in an interview airing Thursday. "And he said, 'Do you want to play?' And I said, 'No.' And I started crying and then he's, like, 'Okay.' And he stopped."

Hannah, the subject of a nationwide search that ended when DiMaggio was killed in a shootout with federal agents, says she's "sick and angry" when she thinks about him.

She also says that during the abduction, DiMaggio did not reveal that he had just murdered her mother and kid brother.

"He told me that my mom was in the garage and that Ethan was upstairs and that … they were alive," Anderson says. She adds that DiMaggio "handcuffed me and zip-tied my feet and then sat me down on the couch and told me what his plan was."

She says that DiMaggio told her "that he was going to kidnap me and take me to Idaho, where my intention was just to carry his backpacks to the river. And that he was gonna live there. And then he'd get me home afterwards."

Since the incident, Anderson has tried to resume to a normal life in San Diego, attending high school, hanging out with her friends and chatting on social media, where she has answered questions about the abduction on her ask.fm page.

Anderson says she stands by her online comments that DiMaggio "got what he deserved."

"You still feel that way?" asks the Today's Savannah Guthrie.

"Yes," Anderson replies.

The problem with a lie is you can't remember who you told what and when.
Every time she opens her mouth her story changes.

In regard to the rusdsian roulette. she STARTED cryine, she doesn't tell us she cried and there is a dropped pronoun in regard to freaking out.
AND at the beginning of a sentence indicates missing info, it is also out of chronological order.
It is her turn and she starts to cry followed by "And he said, 'Do you want to play?' And I said, 'No.' And I started crying and then he's, like, 'Okay.' And he stopped."
If it was her turn then he was already playing russian roulette.
$ consecutive sentences all staring with AND. Either a whole lot of missing info or it didn't happen, i suspect the latter since she can't even keep events in order.

it caught my eye she mentions handcuffs as she was asked on ask.com about being handcuffed and she replied how do you know i wasn't? making it sensitive ( answering a question with a question and anything in the negative is also sensitive)

"that he was going to kidnap me and take me to Idaho, where my intention was just to carry his backpacks to the river. And that he was gonna live there. And then he'd get me home afterwards."
Body position indicates tension
Hetells her he was going to kidnap her then she says MY intention wasjust to carry his backpacks. She doesn't tell us that is was she did, she tells us it was only her intention. We can intend to do a lot of things, it doesn't mean we will do them.
Why would he need to tell her he was going to kidnap her?
Since he appeared to have unlimited access to her why not just run away togeather or not return her home when he had the chance? Why the torture and murder when it wasn't necessary?

Again we have sentences beginning with AND indicating missing info and also it is out of chronological order. What is missing between him 'kidnapping her and going to Idaho to live and returning her?
He was going to live in Idaho and then get her home afterwards. After what?
It seems a lot of trouble kidnap a girl go to another state and then get her home afterwards, especially if he tortured and murdered the mom and son and dog.

Every time she opens her mouth i see a sulky teen who was probably told no and was jealous about her sibling. Torture is upclose and personal, it takes time, it is messy. Why would a kidnapper do that if he was solely interested in kidnap. A stroppy teen however would, it would be payback for perceived slights.

So which was it?

................................

How long was he in "The Back of the house" "Bathroom" for a 2 and a half year old with severe mental/physical disability, and without shoes to wonder off so far he could not find her.

Also,Smith told authorities his daughter would occasionally go outside to play with the family dogs.

She has a severe mental/physical disability,so why would you let her outside unsupervised. Why were the doors not locked given that she has wondered off before.

If there was suspicious cars in the area, wouldn't that be all the more reason to have the doors locked...

Would the dogs have barked if someone had taken her?
Did no one her the dogs bark, did he.

Questions,questions questions?.

Did backpack have any of Hannah's belongings in it? If her purpose was only to get him there and carry "his" backpack, he would not have packed for her. Does she take ownership of intentions by stating "my intentions"

Why would the mother wonder if her baby is ever coming home?
I know people are different and handle things in.different ways, but that's not really what I would expect a parent to say. Maybe I have different expectations though. I'm a pretty chill person as far as it goes, but I flip out about my kids. The world is a dangerous place. Im pretty sure I wouldn't be sitting at home wondering if my baby was ever coming home, I'd be out finding her.

Did back.Pack have any of ____ belongings in it?IF HER PURPOSE WAS ONLY TO GET HIM there and carry "THIS" BACKpack, he would not have packed for her. Does she TAKE OWNERSHIP of intentions BY STATING "MY INTENTIONS"

The word intentions used twice...shows sensitivity to a planned event AKA guilty knowledge

I am ready to see Hannah get cornered in any one of her lies. the cops may be done with her but the public is just getting started.

for arguments sake ---- what are chances Hannah is just an attention seeking crazy liar and NOT a killer. ( I think she's a killer) But I/we should logically eliminate other possabilities before assigning guilt.

IF she was just a liar and not a killer ---- what could be the truth?

I'm late to comment and have not been following the Anderson abduction carefully. However, doesn't the above quote differ from her reasons as to why she didn't alert the folks she crossed on her hike? Something about her being afraid he would kill her and the horsemen if she spoke up? I will read more about it now.

Adoptive parents of missing teen headed to New Orleans, hope ...

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/10/09/4375877/fire-reported-at-erica-parsons.html

I was wondering Peter when you might start analysis on the Erica Parsons case. There is an abundance of information on this case in the media. I keep checking to see when you will post your own opinion and possible analysis. The above links are the most recent info in the news. The adoptive parents of Erica left to look for her and Nan in New Orleans. Today the house where Erica was living at before she was reported missing caught on fire.

And really Hannah, he would kidnap a young girl for the sole purpose to carry his backpack? Why would he do that?

And that he was gonna live there. And then he'd get me home afterwards.

"afterwards"? After he lived there? After she got him there? If they had to hike back to bring her home, who would carry his backpack when he had to go back alone? Keep talking Hannah!

Ecclesiastes 5:1-7
New King James Version (NKJV)
FEAR GOD, Keep Your Vows

The next time be afraid of the horsemen , know I'll light the way for them.

5 Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

2 Do not be rash with your mouth,
And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
Therefore let your words be few.
3 For a dream comes through much activity,
And a fool’s voice is known by his many words.
4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it;
For He has no pleasure in fools.
Pay what you have vowed—
5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.
6 Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse[a] and destroy the work of your hands? 7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.

"I went looking everywhere I could think," Dale said,  "the neighbor's house, all the properties, yelling for her, even into a megaphone and didn't hear anything back from her."

Is this what a parent of a truly missing child does? Yell out to the child, check with neighbors, actually search for the child?

Or does the parent hide in a bathroom?

Jo said...

"He handcuffed me and zip-tied my feet and then sat me down on the couch and told me what his plan was,"

What does Peter say about including body position in statement?

Why would he tell her his plans and then drug her until they got to Idaho? Didn't they make gas stops between there where she was spotted in the gas station? Is this another discrepancy in her story?

“He drugged me,” Hannah – accompanied by her father, Brett Anderson – tells Savannah Guthrie in an exclusive “Today” interview set to air Thursday. “I was out, then I woke up in Idaho – so, I don’t remember anything between there.”

Why would she use "remember" instead of "I don't know"

Read the cases. Read what they said. What Peters analysis was and well, how the real truth came out.

But in all honesty, it will be hard to prove a lot of cases he analyzed.

Why? Well first off, most of the cases he analyzes are those that are cases that he sees deception in and uses them for analysis. There is no value in using the case of the killer who admitted he killed as there is not deception.

So, we have unsolved crimes. We have cases where even if convicted, does not prove guilt (innocent people are convicted). We have abusers that will forever deny abuse.

So proof is hard when you are faced with so many unsolved cases and so many people that take their lies to their graves.

My take on Hannah Andersons Body language.

When doing a Body Language Analysis i prefer to watch it with the sound turned down before i see or hear the words spoken.By watching it with the sound down we can concentrate on her Body language without getting distracted by what she is saying. The reason i do this is.If i pick up on micro expression, and or Body language movements i will take note of were they appear.I will then go back and watch it with the sound up and see what was said for them to display these actions, and whether they are sensitive questions or not.

Although this is a retrospective analysis on Hannah Anderson, it is still quite interesting to note her facial reactions and her body language,or lack of it given what she is talking about.. In the short clip with Today News(Full interview being aired later today).

She is asked "Did you feel in fear of your life"

She reply's.

"Yeah, when we got into the house after he told me the plan".

There is a very slight lowering and contraction of her eyebrows. This, according to EKman can mean the person is either feeling sad, distressed,or is feeling guilt.

She goes on to say.

"He made me play Russian Roulette with him on the couch"

Interviewer buts in and says ."with a real gun"..This is a no no.She is putting words in her mouth. She should let her speak freely and introduce her own words!

Hannah says.

"Yeah. And when it was my turn i started crying and like was freaking out.and he said do you want to play, and i said no and was crying and he said ok."

Were is the sadness(apart what from what i mentioned above, however,it could be any of the three i mentioned ?)

Were is the anger towards him ?.

were is the fear ?.

Were is the disgust towards him?.

Given that she is allegedly recalling an horrific event ?.

These emotions are all missing,i would expect to see at least one of them if not all...

She is also holding he right wrist with her left hand. This could be a self comforting gesture,or she may have a sore wrist..

Hannah may display all the emotions i have listed here when the full interview is released,we will have to wait and see.
