Discussion Post: Internet Fraud

Julie Baker has committed "commerce fraud" or "internet fraud" (depending upon how Maryland law reads) and could face prosecution when she withdraws the "Go Fund Me" money (over $40,000 thus far). Depending upon a prosecutor, she could be safe should she ask Go Fund Me to issue refunds, but it would come down to a DA's decision. She issued a new statement on Go Fund Me and has included the element of "fear", while removing her penchant for capitalization. These two elements show an awareness of her crime. She is right to be afraid because the penalty for fraud may be much more than simply returning the 40K, but could include heavy fine and imprisonment. Baltimore has its own Internet Fraud investigators.
