A Voice for Hailey: Excert from Upcoming Book

"Billie Jean Dunn often lost supporters after appearing at the various "Hailey" functions in which she showed a disregard for the laborers, instead choosing to only speak to those who appeared either to be outwardly wealthy, or who included handsome males in their entourage.  Each function saw her fan base dwindle, including the time when she came dressed so inappropriately that..."

Here is a short excert from "A Voice From Hailey:  How Nancy Grace Became a Murder Victim's Voice" due out this Fall.

*********************************************************************************

Connie Jones, Clint’s mother and Hailey’s grandmother,  said she believed Hailey was raped by Shawn Adkins and that Billie is covering for him.  She told this to a national audience, via The Nancy Grace Show live, while Billie listened in.

In this crazy circus, what was Billie’s reaction to this stupendous assertion?

Would she shout it down and claim it to be ridiculous and something she would never have done?

No.

Billie Dunn's only response:  why didn't someone tell her this?

She didn’t deny the allegation against her:  that she was covering for Shawn.

She did not even battle the allegation that Shawn had raped Hailey and that this had taken place under her own roof, in her own home, while she, Billie, was supposed to be protecting Hailey.  No, Billie Jean did not address the allegations, including that Hailey was dead in order to be silenced from speaking.

Billie simply asked why she had not heard this before the show. Keep in mind:  the information about the thousands and thousands of pornographic and deviant images (including child pornography) was not yet know at this airing:

GRACE: Good evening. I`m Nancy Grace. I want to thank you for being with us. Bombshell tonight. A horrific scenario is emerging. Hailey`s grandmother reveals her fear, her real fear that Mommy`s live-in boyfriend molested 13-year-old Hailey, then murdered her when she threatened to tell. And as we go to air, police plan a dig underneath Hailey`s home.

I want to go straight out to you, ladies. I want to thank you for being with us. Everyone, take a look at the photos...

BILLIE DUNN: Thank you.

GRACE: ... of Hailey that we are showing you. The tip line, 325-728- 5294. Many people believe this girl could still be alive.

With us, Billie Dunn and Connie Jones. I want to go first to Connie Jones. This is Hailey`s grandmother. Ms. Jones, thank you for being with us. I understand that it wasn`t that long ago you tried to get custody, relatives tried to get custody away from Mommy? You wanted Hailey out of that home, is that correct?

Connie Jones attempted to get custody of Hailey away from Billie Dunn, via Clint, though Clint continued his descent into a marijuana haze that would leave Hailey with no one to turn to in the family, and only a trusted teacher who could do little.  Hailey would not want mom to get in trouble, and would not want to have child protective services called again.  No, she could not talk to her teacher, but, perhaps, if she just hinted to her grandmother, maybe, just maybe, she would ask Hailey what was going on...

CONNIE JONES, HAILEY`S PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER: Yes, ma`am. That was last January.

GRACE: What happened?

JONES: Well, I had went on vacation, and when I come back, Clint had said that he had Hailey and then Billie that he ended up getting her back and everything. And I didn`t even know any of this was going on until I came back.

GRACE: You didn`t know what was going on?

This would not be an easy interview for Nancy, and one in which the frustration quickly rose to the surface.  Nancy, both prosecutor and mother, would see both callings stifled.

JONES: No, ma`am. All I know is that Clint tried to take her because Hailey wanted to stay with Clint. And  wanted her back

GRACE: Ms. Jones -- Ms. Jones, your theory that the live-in boyfriend sexually attacked the little girl and that he killed her when she threatened to tell -- what do you base that on?

Nancy went to the heart of the matter.  It is unthinkable to the mother of twins that a mother would cover up such a monstrosity, but to the prosecutor, she knows it happens.

JONES: Because Hailey had told me him been living there in the past that he would walk around at nighttime, and the hall light would be on, and she could see his shadow at her door, at the foot of the door. She could see his legs at the foot of the door, just at her door, just standing there. And it scared her. And I don`t know, things just don`t add up that Monday. Why would he leave his job? He didn`t quit, he just left his job.

This is actually a very sad statement; with a sadness that any professional interviewer of children immediately recognizes.

First, there is nothing in it to suggest that she is misquoting Hailey or being deceptive about what Hailey told her.  Hailey told her she was afraid of Shawn.

Yet, there is something terribly missing in this statement that becomes visible in the lens of Statement Analysis.

In the years of interviewing children, I learned what some parents know, and what all child protective services social workers know:  kids often tell what happened, in bits and pieces, especially when it comes to sexual abuse.  It is as if they are hinting and waiting for us to ask them questions to give them "permission" to tell, or even "demand" them to tell, what they have been threatened fiercely over, to not tell.

I once interviewed a girl about Hailey’s age regarding sexual abuse. The report came in about possible sexual abuse from a guidance counselor who felt that the child was hinting at it, but would not disclose due to fear of mother's boyfriend, as well as fear of getting her own mother in trouble.  This is quite common.

The child is saddled with a terrible secret of what has been done to her, coupled with fear because she loves her mother, but also terror from the threats of the boyfriend who has promised retribution to fall, not upon the child so much, but upon the child's own mother.  Child molesters are highly manipulative and clever.  The child feels a burden which she wishes to unload, while feeling a constraint that says "You do not have a voice.  You cannot speak." The child may think to herself:  "I must get someone else to say it, so I won't be blamed" and hints or gives small portions of information in hopes of being told, in authoritative means, to disclose.

The child I interviewed only gave “linguistic indicators” that she was sexually abused, while never coming out and speaking of any actual contact.

Her behavior spoke loudly to teachers, which included new and unpredictable mood swings, a severe drop in grades, a newly seen disrespectful tone,  and a refusal to shower or practice hygiene.  It was, as it appeared, that she was trying to make herself as "unattractive" to her mother's live in boyfriend as possible.  She disclosed no contact, but it was with the training that I recognized the linguistic indicators of abuse, and this would guide me.

“Linguistic indicators” of sexual abuse are remarkably similar to behavioral patterns that teachers, doctors and social workers are familiar with.

A little boy comes to school and needs prompting to wash his hands, yet on this day, he needs no prompt:  he washes his hands ever hour.

The teacher recognizes this change in behavior, and its relation to water and is concerned that, perhaps, he has experienced sexual abuse.

It is similar in language.

We note the inclusion of “water” in statements as well as some other elements that are related to sexual abuse:  specifically, “lights” and “doors” found within statements of children who are sexually abused, or even in adults who experienced sexual abuse in childhood.

It makes sense.

The “opening of a door” may be deeply entrenched into the mind of the child as it was the beginning of the horror of sexual abuse, as was the turning on or off of a light.  As the child thinks of the abuse, these figures come into their language.

As Connie Jones was quoting Hailey, note the two elements of possible sexual abuse in her language:  she related Shawn outside her “door” and the “light” on in the hallway, casting his shadow.

In the young teen I interviewed she would not disclose sexual abuse, even though “doors” and “lights” (and blankets, that is, ‘coverings’) were in her words.  This is a typical pattern with kids.  They often give us “a” but want us to know “b” and “c” and even “d”, though they feel too much shame or embarrassment.

I sensed this was the case with the young girl and I finally said to her, “I can’t help you if you won’t let me.”

I then handed her my notebook and pen and said, “You interview me!” which, she was excited over.  She began with my name, my age, what I liked and then asked me if I liked people putting their hands on me.

She broke.

If Hailey went to her grandmother, Connie, and felt shame, embarrassment, and very likely fear (fear of disclosure), it would make sense that Hailey would only give out a portion of information, wanting her grandmother to “connect the dots” and get to the truth.

Sadly, this was missed by Nancy at this point.  She had on her “prosecutor’s hat”, meaning, she needed something she could strongly assert, and she could not have said, “Connie, why didn’t you ask Hailey what she was trying to tell you!?” as it would have meant nothing but more pain to the grandmother and would not bring voice to Hailey.

This powerful introduction by Hailey, which included "doors" and "lights" may have been Hailey trying to get her grandmother to "make her talk" and tell her about the videos, the X Box, and all that Shawn had been doing and saying, and push her grandmother into assuring her that her mother would not be in trouble if she told.  Readers of the Statement Analysis blog had been long familiar with such linguistic indicators from previous cases, and knew that Hailey, just 13, likely filled with both shame (as victims justly feel) and fear from Shawn's towering appearance and threats, wanted to tell all, but perhaps even feared for her own father's life, since Shawn, especially with his creep masks, had made such serious threats against them before that mom had even called the police...

As i was reading your exert from your upcoming book, even before i read further down, "doors" and "lights" jumped off the page. These principles are a must for "teachers", "nurses" or anyone who has close contact with children. Be they parents or "In Loco Parentis"

I look forward to reading your up and coming books.

OT update:

GoFundMe started for private search for missing Idaho toddler Deorr Kunz Jr

A GoFundme was started for a private search for Idaho toddler Deorr Kunz Jr was. The online crowd fund begun on August 31 only raised a little the first few days. But as of September 2, the "Baby Deorr Private Search Fund" is gaining steam. The GoFundMe page states it is not affiliated with the Kunz family, Mom Jessica Mitchell or dad Deorr Kunz Sr. So far it's raised over $900 of the $2,500 needed. It will pay for a search dog team to begin around early October. This endeavor has police blessing and is waiting on the FBI report.

Meanwhile, Leadore, Idaho Sheriff Lynn Bowerman says he's "99 percent sure" Deorr was actually at the family campsite when he went missing July 10. The case has baffled investigators from the start. Deorr is only 2. His parents thought grandpa was watching him and grandpa thought Deorr was with them. For a few moments, no one was watching him and it was assumed Deorr wandered off. Dad says he small but he moves fast. However the terrain is very rough in rural Idaho.

Wild animal attack was suggested. But an exhaustive search by police, missing child experts and the FBI yielded zero evidence: no clothing scraps, blood, hair, not even any DNA to show he was in the area. The nearby Stone Reservoir was searched by divers and produced nothing except evidence that someone had poured cremains there and contaminated the search.

Police haven't ruled out abduction but have cleared the only people--the family and one friend--known to be in the area. The family friend Isaac Reinwand was ruled out despite the fact that he has a record and the parents had never met him before. Police investigated whether Deorr was even with the family. The family stopped at a few places before coming to the camp. Those places don't have security cameras and can't positively ID Deorr. Police also wondered about a time discrepancy, as there was some evidence the family arrived earlier than reported. But still Bowerman is convinced the family is telling the truth and they don't suspect any of them in Deorr's disappearance.

Liespotter, I hope that mom did not write the note. It is heartbreaking to think of that little girl reading it and thinking, "I didn't realize people thought of me that way!" No kid deserves that.

Referring to a missing child in the present tense is the norm, and it is expected. Guilty people do it also. It is only the rare 'slip' into the past tense that reveals the lack of concentration in maintaining a lie.

Casey Anthony used the present tense; even once correcting herself.

It is not indicative of belief the child is alive. It is a neutral point. I have addressed this error repeatedly, but once more for anonymous posting.

My thoughts exactly.
Who these days uses a typewriter when pretty much everyone has access to a computer and printer.
I wonder if the mom has access to a typewriter?

It makes me wonder also if this was premeditated and typed out before hand otherwise the author would have to note them parking and going into the store, go home, type the letter and go back to the parking lot to place said letter on their windshield, assuming of course their vehicle was still there.

Have other people been left identical letters on their windshields for parking in a disabled spot and not looking obviously disabled?

Does the parking lot have security cameras:?
if so is the area where the mom and daughter parked covered?

Peter, I appreciate that you continue to advocate for Hailey. No one did that for her in life. I'm disappointed no-one's been charged over this and wonder, like for Dylan Redwine, wonder if justice will really be served.

I do hope your book will lay this out for LE and that they will have the courage to at the very least bring it to the Grand Jury. Thank you for not giving up on Hailey. The media certainly has. I do that local Colorado City law enforcement has not given up but I can't say that for the rest of LE.

John McGowan at 5:21 on 9-2-15,

I know it may seem strange to those who don't have the background info, but that gofundme for DeOrr is okay. It was started by a group of people who are in a closed Facebook group about missing little DeOrr (mostly women and a lot of them are moms). As I understand it, these group members are donating the money in order to bring in a private search crew led by someone with SAR dogs. The account is open so anyone can donate, but I don't think that was the original reason it was started. Someone in the group told me they were banding together and telling each other to put their money where their mouths is and fund a search because most do not live in the area and can't search physically themselves.

Hey..... Note the poster at 1:21 pm on 09/04 "pointhunter". Wasn't this the name used by the prison guard who accidentally stumbled upon Haileys' remains out in the 'ugly fiends'; the guy who frequently went point hunting on his days off, and who was browbeaten and threatened into keeping his silence? I wonder if he ever received his finders fee award? Hope so. Sure would be nice to see him again! ABB....

To Another Mom, re your post on 9/04; it is usually a good sign that when Tim of EcuSearch does not get involved in a search for a missing child, or has nothing to say about the case; that he suspects foul play by the parents or other parties that were involved at the time the child went missing and a continuing cover up by them.

It is very costly to run his operation and he will not do it if he knows or senses that he is being misled down a blind alley, which experience he derived from George & Cindy Anthony when little Caylee was said to have been kidnapped by the sitter after bringing his heavy equipment and crew he pays all the way from Texas. He will even sleep in his truck to cut costs. He learned his lesson well from them. He eventually sued the Anthonys but I don't know if he was ever reimbursed one dime.

If monies are being raised to help fund a private search for little DeOrr, then it would have to be enough to pay someone like Tim & Company (who does not personally take a salary), or someone else who has the wherewithal to perform such a search. What about Mamma Jessicas ex hubby, the father of her two older children, who hired a helicopter and sent trained dogs to search for baby DeOrr? What happened to him? Sure wish he would talk. He knows something but won't tell. Dang it. ABB

When I "interrogated" Hailey's friend, It was established that the girl was repeating rumors she had heard. The door to Hailey's bedroom did not have a knob or a lock.(Thanks to Clint's jealous rage) And the way the room is laid out, the door has a hallway of sorts of it's own, and you cannot see into the room through a nonexistent keyhole. When Billie checked on Hailey before leaving for work, the light was not on.
note: Hailey did not take her personal hygiene items with her, nor a change of clothes.

"him been living there in the past"
He did not live there in the past.

Although it may show through statement analysis that there was some lying going on, the facts prove the truth.

"but perhaps even feared for her own father's life, since Shawn,"
Clint kicked his arse right there in his mom's yard. I doubt Hailey was fearful he could harm her dad.

There was no child porn. Get it right. You will be known as a fool when Hailey's real killer is brought in for justice. And that will set statement analysis back 60 years at least.

Good lord. You're the one who needs to get it right Anon @ 11:20 p.m. Frightened Hailey was so scared of Shawn that she frequently slept on the couch with one eye open as she had no place to hide from Shawn (OR her doped up sicko mother). She thought there she might be able to get away from him if she could run out the door fast enough before he could drag her to her mother's disgusting bedroom.

This poor girl lived a horrible nightmare life. Clint was no better than Billy Jean in trying to protect his innocent daughter. He didn't. He was too busy hunkered down with Naomi, making sex and staying lit higher than an aeroplane. This b'stard wouldn't even give the child lunch money, causing her to frequently go hungry all day.

You just don't even begin to know the nightmare life this child lived, KNOWING she was headed for her violent end, with no one to help her or stop it.

At least she is at home with the angels now, which is little consolation for the pain and degradation she suffered in her lifetime; however, you may rest assured those who did this to her WILL pay in time to come even if they have gotten away with her abuse and murder so far. God saw it even if we didn't.

Oh now hold on a minute Anon @ 12:06pm...... Every time I stated Hailey slept on the couch therefore Peter was incorrect.... my comments would get deleted. Now you want to use that fact to support the agenda here? Right... What Connie claimed could not be true, as Hailey slept on the couch. Thank you.

Who said anything about a knob or a lock or a keyhole??
She said she could see him standing at the door, his shadow.
She could see his legs at the foot of her door.
Which tells me the door was OPEN. And she could see the shadow and his legs from the hall light - which there was a hall light if it WASN'T ON when Billie went to work.
And since the door has a hallway of its own?? Then it is definitely possible that she could see the shadow of him standing at her door, illuminated by the light put there to make her feel safe. Unfortunately her mother should have made her feel safe as well. I can't believe what I just read that you wrote. Just. Wow.

Anons @ 12:19 and 12:23, it would be ludicrous to believe anything that was said in the earlier post @11:20; obviously made by someone from the Billie Jean camp of loonies. Hailey had told her grandmother Connie how Shawn would pace back and forth and stand outside her bedroom door, how she could see his shadow and hear him out there and could see the shadow of his feet under the crack in her door and how scared she was of him. She also told granny Connie how she would attempt to sleep on the couch sometimes, barely sleeping, so she might be able to run in a hurry.

I don't think it is true either that Clint had gone into the house and torn down Haileys' bedroom door even though he and Billie's son David did once get in a fist fight with Shawn in his own yard. It was later said by Billie herself that Clint had not been in "her" house in years.

Hailey being frightened as she watched Shawns shadow under her door was not a rumor told to a girlfriend, it was told to Granny Connie (her own words) by Hailey; crying, how scared she was and begging her granny to let her go on the vacation trip with her. She didn't, it was too far out of her way, she said, to go back and get Hailey as she left for the trip. This was the final chance for anyone to save Hailey and her granny failed her. She was gone by the time granny got back from her trip. I don't know that I'd be able to live with myself if I'd left her there had I been her granny.

I wonder, what is going on with Billie Jean now? And Shawn? Also David. What are they all doing, does anyone know? ABB
