Guest Submission: Cardinal George Pell

Cardinal Pell Acquittal

Analysis by Colin Ector

Cardinal George Pell has been released from prison after having his conviction overturned.

Pell was convicted in December 2018 of sexually abusing two choir boys in the late 90’s. He had been accused of committing the crimes when he found the boys drinking alter wine after mass, in Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Australian High Court

“The High Court found that the jury, acting rationally on the whole of the evidence, ought to have entertained a doubt as to the applicant’s guilt with respect to each of the offences for which he was convicted, and ordered that the convictions be quashed and that verdicts of acquittal be entered in their place,”

Pell has made the following statement to the press. ( The Cardinal’s words are in italic.)

I have consistently maintained my innocence while ( ) suffering from a serious injustice
This has been remedied today with the High Court's unanimous decision.”

  1. We note the subject, (Pell) begins with the pronoun “I” making it likely to contain reliable information.  It does not mean it is truthful or deceptive. Only that statistically within the words, we will find reliable information as he is psychologically present.
  2. The subject does not tell us he is innocent.  He tells us that he has “consistently maintained” his innocence.  There is a difference. This would be a true statement regardless of whether he abused the boys or not.  This leads us to ask, why has he simply not told us that he did not sexually abuse the boys? Why does he have the need to change what we call, a reliable denial, to a statement of his commitment to maintaining a position.
A reliable denial contains 3 parts.
  1. The pronoun “I”
  2. “Did not” or “didn’t”
  3. The specific allegation stated clearly.
  1. Note the subject has omitted the pronoun “I” when he tells us of his “suffering from a serious injustice”.  The missing pronoun reduces his psychological commitment to his words.
  2. “remedied”. We remedy an undesirable situation.  Would an innocent man use such a weak word to describe being acquitted of such a serious crime, especially after spending over 400 days in prison?

“I look forward to reading the judgment and reasons for the decision in detail.
I hold no ill will toward my accuser, I do not want my acquittal to add to the hurt and bitterness so many feel; there is certainly hurt and bitterness enough.

  1. Why does the subject use the singular “accuser”?  There were two boys. Does he hold bitterness to one of them?
  2. Anything in the negative is doubly important to the subject.  The subject now tells us what he does not want.
  3. Why would there be “hurt and bitterness” if he did not sexually abuse the boys?
  4. Anything repeated is important to the subject.  “Hurt” and “Bitterness” are repeated.
  1. Who feels “hurt and bitterness” that the subject has increased in importance with repetition and connecting to the negative?
Answer: So many.  Is the subject thinking of others abused by other members of the Catholic Church or might this be an indication that there are others that Pell has abused?

However my trial was not a referendum on the Catholic Church; nor a referendum on how Church authorities in Australia dealt with the crime of paedophilia in the Church.
The point was whether I had committed these awful crimes, and I did not.

  1. We still wait for a reliable denial. “I did not” misses the third part of a reliable denial. "I did not" what? The truly innocent have no issue stating the allegation as they have no psychological connection to it.  The subject here changes the allegation to “these awful crimes” and he does not connect even this to his denial.
  2. This sentence does in fact, allow for the possibility that the subject committed “these awful crimes”.  This is unexpected wording from an innocent subject.
    3. He acknowledges that awful crimes took place.

The only basis for long term healing is truth and the only basis for justice is truth, because justice means truth for all.

  1. This in analysis is called “the sermon”.  It is often an indication of projected guilt. It could be argued that the subject being a Cardinal may Sermonise more than most. However, no one gets a pass on human nature and the sermon is noted regardless.
  2. “Truth” is repeated three times in this sentence.  The subject does not connect himself to the truth. He does not say “I have told the truth” or “I am telling the truth”.  It is likely part of the subject’s sermonising and need to persuade.

A special thanks for all the prayers and thousands of letters of support.
I want to thank in particular my family for their love and support and what they had to go through; my small team of advisors; those who spoke up for me and suffered as a result; and all my friends and supporters here and overseas.
Also my deepest thanks and gratitude to my entire legal team for their unwavering resolve to see justice prevail, to throw light on manufactured obscurity and to reveal the truth.
Finally, I am aware of the current health crisis. I am praying for all those affected and our medical frontline personnel.

There is nothing within this statement from Cardinal Pell upon his release from prison to suggest he did not sexually abuse the two boys.
He does not reliably deny the accusation of sexual abuse and uses more words, time and effort to do so.  If he is unable or unwilling to tell us reliably he did not abuse them, we cannot say it for him.

In 2018 the Cardinal made this statement to the media. We believe the Cardinal’s words. He is the one who has the information. He is the one who knows what happened. We expect to hear a reliable denial from the Cardinal.

Good morning to you all. I want to say one or two brief words about my situation. These matters have been under investigation now for two years. There have been leaks to the media. There has been relentless character assassination — relentless character assassination — and for more than a month, claims that a decision on whether to lay charges was imminent.
  1. The subject (Cardinal Pell) takes ownership of what he describes as “my situation”, with the possessive pronoun “my”.
  2. He expresses his desire to say “one or two brief words”.  It only requires a few brief words to tell us “I didn’t sexually abuse the boys”.  He does not.
  3. Instead of denying the accusations the subject tells us he is the victim. “Relentless character assassination”, which he repeats making it doubly important to him.
  4. The subject is likely frustrated that “these matters” are still under investigation after two years.  It is important enough for him to tell us and at the beginning of his statement making it a priority for him.

I'm looking forward, finally, to having my day in court. I'm innocent of these charges. They are false. The whole idea of sexual abuse is abhorrent to me.
  1. There is no reliable denial again.  The subject is avoiding giving a reliable denial whilst hoping we will interpret his words into his innocence.  He is not looking forward to telling a court that he did not abuse the boys. It is “having his day in court”.
  2. The subject sermonises telling us “The whole idea of sexual abuse is abhorrent to me”.  Sermonising is often used by those who harbour guilt as they project and try to persuade others of their innocence.
I've kept Pope Francis — the Holy Father — regularly informed during these long months. I have spoken to him on a number of occasions in the last week, I think most recently, a day or so ago.
We talked about my need to take leave to clear my name. So I'm very grateful to the Holy Father for giving me this leave to return to Australia. I've spoken to my lawyers about when this will be necessary.
  1. The subject’s language has changed. “spoken to him” is now “we talked”.  “spoke to him” holds more authority in his words? Now they have “talked about his need to take leave” which is more conversational.   Did the Holy Father suggest or tell him to take leave?
  2. This is very sensitive to the subject.  He unnecessarily tells us the reason why he is “very grateful” which in context may suggest he did not want to return to Australia.
And I've spoken to my doctors about the best way to achieve this. All along, I have been completely consistent and clear in my total rejection of these allegations.
  1. This is a true statement.  It is not a denial. It is not a reliable denial. It takes more effort than a reliable denial and it is to avoid giving a reliable denial.  It avoids the internal stress of telling a direct lie.
  2. This likely speaks to the subject’s personality.  In his mind he has no need to deny the allegations. He can simply reject them like you might reject a faulty item.  That is enough for him and it should be enough for the legal system. He likely sees himself above the law and beyond prosecution.
News of these charges strengthens my resolve, strengthens my resolve. And court proceedings now offer me an opportunity to clear my name and then return here back to Rome to work.Thank you.”
  1. The subject doubles down on his strengthening of resolve.  He will likely double down on his deception.
  2. His name is what is important and clearing it.  He is unwilling or unable to tell us he did not do it.

Conclusions

  1. The subject is unwilling or unable to give a simple reliable denial regarding the accusations of sexual abuse. This is the "psychological wall of truth" we expect one to safely stand behind. "I didn't sexually touch the boys" should be front and center and the defense against all injustices perpetrated against him.
  2. The subject likely sees himself above prosecution and the law.
  3. The subject’s name is what is important to him.
  4. He sees himself as the victim and does not show any empathy for the boys who were abused.

The Cardinal’s words from both Statements indicate that his acquittal is a mistake and that justice for the victims has been undone.

The Cardinal’s words indicate he has always seen himself as Elite and above consequences.  The acquittal is not likely to dissuade him from this position.

with his words "I had committed these awful crimes" seems very much an embedded admission.

He instructed police. This Mayor instructs police on what to do. That he feels that he can do this means that this time around he wanted to special treatment, other times, he does. How sad is this.

Great analysis Colin, thankyou.

I hold [no ill will] toward my accuser, I do not want my acquittal to add to the hurt and bitterness so many feel; there is certainly hurt and bitterness enough.

“I hold [no ill will] toward [my] accuser”

Said in the negative he introduces “ill will”. This suggests that there is ill will by the fact it is on his mind and he includes it in his language. When speaking of what there isn’t he connects it to his accuser (“my accuser”), and takes possession of them.

If wrongly accused of such a terrible crime I think most would hold ill will towards the person who had made false accusations against them. I would expect to hear words on the lines of “I am very angry” etc… There is likely “ill will” there, but for other reasons than being falsely accused. It will be connected to the “suffering” he mentioned early in his statement.

“to add to the hurt and bitterness”

Hurt is the result of injury, be it mental or physical. He doesn’t want his acquittal to add to (increase) what already exists. As it is in the negative it is doubly important. He knows his acquittal will cause more injury to “so many” and this is why it has not only been included in his statement (on his mind), but also said in the negative (sensitive).

"The point was whether I had committed these awful crimes, and I did not"

Sometimes "whether" and "if" are interchangeable.
An innocent person never allows for the possibility of guilt, but Pell allows the possibility of "whether" he committed "these awful crimes".
He also draws them near by calling them "these" instead of "those".

Taking yourself or family to the store now is a bad idea, grocery workers are sick and dying and it isn't fair to anyone to go out this week. Stay inside, order free delivery, try to make it the next few days without going out as much as possible.

Hopefully the virus will take out the pseudo artists that are going to make a musical out of Tiger King. Not only does Netflix entertain the fools with 3rd rate time wasters for those who can't get enough of drug dealing faggots and their he/she suicidal wives, now that.

It's not outrageous enough that he's an animal abuser, runs a fake charity, into drugs, and another self-aggrandizing Okie that fires bullets at a plastic blow up doll that represents a woman (and could it not be a better woman than one of his she-man wives).....now they want the President of the US to pay attention to the idiots antics.

May the Lord send a twister twice the size of the '99, 2013 and any other destruction to plow through where ever those animals are incarcerated and plague them with corona should they survive.

Wishing a tsunami on them is out of the question. a good old fashioned bombing only puts them in the limelight and they'd enjoy that best.

Oh, gawd......it gets worse. One of them, a meth head, is now with a woman ( a real one I suspect since I didn't see a blow up doll) and now wants to 'hep the little children' in traditional Okie style so others won't think he's a drug dealing faggot.

He will help make them see it's not all about "ME".....I'd speculate it will be all about him.

I don't know what he'll contribute other than a few names of tattoos shops, the best nipple piecing store in town, or who makes the best meth from paint cleaners and thinners.

What kind of woman would marry a thing like that? I'd rather marry a tiger or a gorilla.

I'm not about to watch that crap. I merely looked at an article online and noticed a few of the key players.

It's not a "program" but instead a statement of what people who enjoy it are all about.

It is, however, a snapshot of the type of crud from Oklahoma and what they are really about.

Any time you see someone all dressed up like a cowboy, better expect a wuss such as that crew. Same goes for the Harley jacket and tatted meth heads displayed.

When someone from Flordia says it's about the dumbest thing he's ever seen, that should be a warning. They don't get much dumber than Flordia, so that's telling of how Okies educational reformation is doing.

That state will never pull out of the dregs. It will always be known for drugs, human trafficking, extortion, and of course........the Murrah Building bombing. Had they not been bombed, most of America would never had known it was even a state.

I also just read that a couple of kids down in Grady county set an old womans house on fire because they were bored. She had cancer and didn't need it so they thought.

They are nothing but a state filled with nasty azz people. Pathetic roads, no LE except for those related to them or those with wealth, man made earthquakes to add suspense to tornados and other disasters, constant bomb drills, constant harassment and stalking, theft, extortion.....you name it. It is a nasty place to live.

They like to top it off with their tin foil conspiracy cults and pretend they are saving the world from prejudiced people by terrorising others for causes and media advertisments.

It ain't ever gonna get any worse than Oklahoma!

OT: Cuomo

Andrew Cuomo: "The science people, the government professionals have to stand up and look the president in the eye and say, 'This is not a political exercise. This is not press relations. It’s not optics. The tsunami is coming. We know it is."

Rule of SA: "In analysis, we always take note of anything offered to us (not as a result of a direct question) in the negative, as important. It may be sensitive due to its importance, or it may be sensitive due to deception."

Based on this SA-rule, the political and press related aspects of the coronavirus outbreak are either very important to Cuomo or he is deceptive in his statement that ”This is not a political exercise. This is not press relations. It’s not optics”. It's probably both: Cuomo's daily speeches are all (or: also) about politics, optics and standing up to the president (“stand up and look the president in the eye”).

”The Tsunami is coming” -> was he hoping the coronavirus would lead to a “political tsunami” ? A “blue wave”, starting in New York? See also the following quote:

Andrew Cuomo: "New York is the canary in the coal mine, you’re going to see this moving across the country. Anyone who wants to say this is New York alone, that’s a political, partisan, divisive view, and it’s exactly wrong."

The “canary in the coal mine”-expression seems hardly suitable for New York’s role in the pandemic. The virus had already spread over many countries and was present in many US states before it hit New York the hardest. So people didn’t need Cuomo to warn them about it. However, if the Democrats’ intention was for Cuomo/New York to start a wave of Democratic criticism of Trump’s handling of the corona crisis, the expression would fit perfectly. Is that why Cuomo's tone changed 180 degrees (he had been praising Trump the week before)? I wonder if fellow Democrats reigned him in and told him to start a political domino-effect of criticism to bring Trump down?

"Anyone who wants to say this is New York alone, that’s a political, partisan, divisive view, and it’s exactly wrong."

Why did he add this sentence? The virus was already present in other states so why was he afraid people might want to say “this is New York alone”? Also: if no-one had apparently even said it yet (“want” to say) it’s kind of telling that Cuomo raises the idea. Was he anticipating criticism? Was he already criticized behind closed doors? Does he feel guilty/responsible for New York being ill-prepared (or: being worse prepared than other states) for the pandemic? And: if New York was indeed ill-prepared, what would be political, partisan, divisive about pointing that out? I think Cuomo accusing Trump of politicizing the pandemic and not providing enough equipment may have been a pre-emptive strike for the event Trump or others would accuse Cuomo of the same.

Anonymous said...

Good! Maybe the tsunami will wipe out "Q" once and for all.

Trump will be known for conferring with the likes of Alex Jones whose main goal in life is to sell fake cures for corona virus and harass family members of those whose children are murdered in mass shootings.

Just read one honest opinion of "Tiger King" which stated if it had been told responsibly, the story would have been a real bummer.

Another man (maybe, it's hard to tell with that sleezy crew) stated ole Joe talked down to people all the time. He worked for him shortly after having to consider if he was a serial killer or not. When a person is a dancer in a fag club, one must be careful.

Typical meetups for those causing terror in and outside of Oklahoma. That's how the pipe bomber got started. The one in Flordia that mailed all those pipe bombs...yeah, it's a skill they teach with human trafficking in Oklahoma.

Not only do they want to hep the little children, they want to hep the politicians as well.

Maybe some victims of their extortion rackets will learn how to split their cable with an axe if one of those drug dealing bazz turds decend on them.

It isn't safe to shelter in place in Oklahoma as they think they should have access to homes whenever they want if they pretend they are heppin' the little children.

All you need for one of their serial killing phone men is something with a scope on it....they like to hide and hunt.

What a great time in history to be alive. All a person needs to do now is cough on the useless morons.

Maybe football season will wipe out a bunch of them if the memorial of the day they got their guts splattered all over the center of the city doesn't do it for them.

The sick twisted plot thickens in Tiger King as an article stated the new owner, a former partner and snitch, claims the Okie Govenor wanna be had bodies buried at the zoo of others who didn't agree with him as well as bondage equipment and stuffed animals used for sexual toys.

No wonder others want to promote him as a superstar and victim when they are most likely as abusive themselves.

Even the local newscasters eyes light up and gleam when they talk of the movie as they enjoy the attention they get from reporting on the celebrity of one of the states own. It's kinda like the thrill Nancy Grace minions get when describing children being run through chipper shredders and other acts of torture.

They claim the feds don't want to dig up the zoo until they know how long he'll be in prison. WTH? Or they not to confident in their sources? Or,maybe they are expecting more 'hep the little children' charity drives as other drug dealers and torturers of people help make the community a better hell hole in which to exist?

Just heard some of a podcast dedicated to discussing the making of the "Tiger King". It sounds like the producers, two triangulating narco pathic women, lied to turn it into a crime solving whodunnit and get people fighting, thrown in jail (sucessful in Joe Exoctic's case) and sell the rights to Netflix.

It's easy to see why the Okie state and federal officials would approve such since their state operates on 100% pure grain extortion and fake charities.

It is for that reason, their "liberal arts" majors are seen out front with a camera tring to shoot footage inside a home and often enter the homes of others to let them know they are "watching" them.

Often these creatures go so far as to drive extreme distances to threaten family members when others don't comply with their illegal activites and fail to "pay up" more than once.

That's why you'll see a police instructor such as the former cheif of police of Forest Park making weird, ludicrous comments after a stalker guns down 5 people at a media outlet. She's like, well, if you don't support illegal police activite, then they deserved it.

Reading isn't a requirement for instructors in Oklahoma it seems.

That is the main reason they refuse to stop stalking and doemstic terrorism in the state and run their "serial killer phone man" crap to terroris others into submission.

I now wish I'd shot the Oklahoma county deputy's dog, Jake, dead that he unleased on my moving sale.

He never blocks anyone that goes on and on about any other causes.

It's mobbing for money. These people are organised crime trying to persude the public otherwise.

No one says anything about those who go on about things that Nancy Grace covers....they expect to benefit from it. To the detriment of others.

Some pseudo science expert whose expertise isn't allowed in court think the victim of the murder-for-hire scheme is herself a murderer based on body language. She lives in Beverly Hills and has the right to put people on death role it seems.

An excellent article, which I believe to be the truth based on what I know about the Okie culture, in which an out-of-stater got snared into yet another one of their lying fake charity fund raisers and nearly lost his life and was expected to work for free.

It's human trafficking 101, but they only provide releif for those brought from overseas. Okies darn sure aren't going to help one of their own, less likely to help someone from out of state.

Before I moved, I secured a shot gun with a scope on it as the stalking was so thick in the state, I feared I'd be buried there. There is no help in Oklahoma. There is no law enforcement. It's operated off extortion/snitch rackets.

Fortuantely, had it not been for another moron that searched me for a third brake light being out, I'd likely been charged for having the shotgun. That was probably the purpose of pulling me over in the first place.

They protect their criminal cops with all they've got and they expect the citizens to do the same.

The only time I ever saw them get off their arse is when I stepped outside with a loaded handgun and waited the arrival of a tExan than had been call spoofing and circling my house. My neighbor saw it, they saw what he was doing, and most likely called the police. I'd given up by that time and knew calling the police was a waste of time in Oklahoma.

They just don't want Texans dead because they want to be one....just like faggot Exotic.

Every now and then, a writer is compelled to tell the truth for some unknown reason. This one compares the series to the equivalent of licking a subway pole. Here's a link:

https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2020/04/netflix-tiger-king-is-an-ethical-trainwreck/609568/

A MORAL FAILURE the author states.

Degradation, murder, human trafficking, abuse of women (one faggot that turned non-faggot has stragled a wife...I don't know if it was blow up woman or not) and abuse of animals as well as lying, deceiving others for financial gain while jeopardising the lives of others with wild animals in populated areas.

That's akin to firing a automatic weapon into the air near a crowd. It's not a question of if a bullet will come down and kill someone, but when it will.

Yet, Americans are lapping up and embracing the culture as their own.

You don't need statement analysis when your eyes can see what's going on without cherry picking one single person.

I have asked this question many times and never gotten a concrete answer to it. I will try this one more time:
Obviously he had help preparing this statement. It is possible he didn't write a single line of it, right?
If in fact it was written by legal experts, wouldn't it be more accurate to say that what in fact we are analyzing here is what the ones who wrote this assume the truth might be?

I found more statements that could be analised. The neice stated she hoped he rots in hell and never gets out (prison I assume as one would think hell is eternal). A former co-worker stated he only wished he could do more harm to him.

Can't you just feel the love?!!

It's easy to see why others want to feast on the family festivities...it reminds them of their own lives.

thanks for posting the video Hey Jude.
Note, Pell has council sitting next to him but he doesn't refer to him. the language is similar to the language Colin analyzed.

Hello Adrian
You recently posted me an analysis of some transcripted text by Boris Johnson recently, concerning his comments about coronavirus.

For some unfathomable reason the comments you sent me have disappeared from the face of the planet. Not only from this blog, but from the email I received from you as well.

If you still have this analysis to hand would you mind sending it to me again? I will do all I can to immortalize it this time.

The movie makers now think they may get to rule the courthouse claiming he may be released from prison after his accuser, Allen Glover, claimed he wished he could do more damage to him.

Doubtful since no one shed a tear for Holtzclaw after the 13 black women he never raped. He was merely harassing and pushing his weight around and intimidating them into becoming snitches for his area...it backfired on him. Naturally the police didn't want to stand up to Muslim lawyers since they didn't want people to think they are prejudiced and/or fear another bombing. They feared a black uprising like in other cities, which would never have happened in OKC, but their fears come first.

If they won't free holtzclaw, they won't free a seething, sleezy faggot simply because he runs the standard Okie fake charity. Now all they've got are those sleezy biker groups to depend upon to threaten others, and of course, their comic con stalking cells who think everyone is a member of the KKK if they don't agree with their domestic terrorism and extortion. They only want to hep the little children.

Hi, I remember posting some analysis on the blog, but I didn’t email anything to you. If it has been taken down then that will be under the discretion of the blog administrator/s.

General - yes, both the statements sound similar to the police interview - probably he was too arrogant to defer to his lawyer. I found his interview jaw-dropping - all disdain and no curiosity as to why he had been accused, which, if innocent should have shocked him - and probably some embedded confessions. He sounded like a dimwit - he couldn’t be accused of thinking on his feet.

—-

I think the reason he referred to only one accuser is because the other boy died, as a young man. It may have been the death of one which caused the other to make the disclosures. The surviving victim has said he’s accepting of the court’s decision in freeing Pell - incomprehensible.

There's some interesting and telling comments quoted in here.

The entire interview is on Youtube.

From the publication mentioned by Turtlebabble above:

Pell told the royal commission in 2016 that although he lived and worked alongside the notorious paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale in the 1970s, Ridsdale’s abusing “was a sad story and of not much interest to me”. “I had no reason to turn my mind to the evils Ridsdale had perpetrated,” he told the commission.

"I had no reason" -> is that to avoid saying "I didn't"? "sad" is probably a huge understatement and too mild a description for what his colleague did (I'm not familiar with that case). His friend and colleague with whom he shared a house was accused of committing heinous child sex crimes and he says it was "of not much interest to" him?? Was he not shocked?

“Police investigating Pell over new child sexual abuse allegation:”

Good article and I agree with your earlier comments.

The interviewer (Bolt) initially found trouble with Pells statements but later recanted (prior to the interview) and is quoted in the article –

“What he [Pell] seems to have said, meant to say, was that he had no reason to look at what was happening in that parish of Inglewood by Gerald Ridsdale and as a result, those things slipped his mind.”

Here we see Bolt has decided to interpret what Pell has said (instead of take it at face value), and even offered to explain what Pell was “meant to say”. The problem is Pell didn’t say it. Bolt then tells us about Pell –

“that he had no reason to look at what was happening in that parish of Inglewood by Gerald Ridsdale and as a result, those things slipped his mind.”

What things slipped his mind? You have to know something in order for it to slip your mind. Very strange this Bolt character is blatantly trying to change Pells words to mean something other than what they are. Pell said –

Ridsdale’s abusing “was a sad story and of [not much] interest to me”.

He doesn’t say of “no interest”, but rather “not much interest”. So he was interested in it to some degree and had knowledge of the “story”.

A video of Pell making the statement on Cardinal Ridsdale (“it’s a sad story and it wasn’t of much interest to me”, etc.) was widely published on the internet in 2016. So it’s straight from the horse's mouth. Also: I cannot quite reconcile your first point (it’s a slippery slope to rely on media for true sources of information) with your Tiger King-comments (assuming those are yours)?

”Not feeling outrage over an old roommates downfall when he was friends/roommates some 40 years earlier isn't abnormal to no one other than someone who wants to punish others for not being involved in their cause.”

Pell made that statement to the Child Abuse Royal Commission while giving evidence in the Ridsdale case in 2016. That case (and that statement) wasn’t about Ridsdale’s “downfall” nor was it primarily about "negative behaviors surrounding" him. It was about the handling by the Church of the Ridsdale case. Pell was involved in that: he participated in four church meetings in which Ridsdale was moved between parishes during 1977-82. Pell asserted he did not know Ridsdale was a serial pedophile at the time. However, another priest (Bill Melican) who attended some of the church meetings testified Ridsdale was moved “to keep him away from children” and that “this was known to those involved at the time”. If true (and why would Melican lie about it), Pell’s statement (“it’s a sad story and it wasn’t of much interest to me” and “I had reason to turn my mind to the extent of the evils Ridsdale had perpetrated”) is outrageous indeed. He should have reported it instead of covering it up. That is also the opinion of the Royal Commission: Pell would be culpable if he knew why Ridsdale was moved around. Of course he wouldn't be guilty for Risdale’s crimes (nobody said that) but for failure to report Ridsdale and protect the children. That was his moral obligation. For cases commencing from 1 July 2015 it's also a legal obligation: failure to protect a child from sexual abuse by a person of authority within a relevant organization – e.g. a church – is (under circumstances) a criminal offence with a maximum of 5 years imprisonment in Victoria, Australia. I would not be surprised if similar laws exist in the US and other countries.

Just a slight clarification for Colin. In the court case concerned one of the two boys had died years before. Overall Pell shows signs of Asperger's Syndrome or is just plain lacking in empathy. The case against him was fabricated and the charges were absurd. I don't have evidence to believe he personally molested teenage boys nor actively covered up any crimes but am sure he did so passively, by gaslighting anyone who came to him for help. Most people in a hierarchy will protect the organisation rather help those failed by it. Pell did a follow up interview at https://youtu.be/3OX2aUvG51I wherein he refers to priests "who got themselves in a bit of trouble", admitted victims were disbelieved on the grounds clergy were assumed to be good people etc, his previous record of saying he was "not much interested" and while he admitted bad things had been done it was always by "the church" never by an individual. In Australia if he was not a person to take responsibility for the sins of the church then who wss there? He might have found something in his past that was less than helpful and apologised for that by way of offering a vicarious apology and by so doing open the way for victims to forgive and let go but no. He addressed his reputation for lack of empathy by saying he could not understand this reputation and countered it by pointing out he had set uo church bureaucratic processes to hear complaints!!!!. (Victims who use those processes tend to find themselves being gaslighted and taken up blind alleys, anywhere but being assisted to go to the police).

I might go back to the issue of Asperger's Syndrome and suggest that Statement Analysis will give false indications of deception.

From much experience with such people they do not use language the way neuro-typical people do. For example they have no concept of 2nd person singular, to them their language sees others as 3rd person, or if there is some relationship as one of 2nd person plural. If the relationship is particularly close then one is moved out of 2nd person plural into 1st person plural whereby the Asperger person sees others as extensions of themselves and will even refer to signficant others using the relationship. So not 'Mom' but 'Mother', siblings might be referred to in statements or personnaly addressed as 'Brother' or children as 'Son' or 'Child'.

When writing of themselves in the past, say in a record of a conversation between a professor and themselves as an assistant they may refer to themselves as "The Assistant" and the person they reported to as "The Professor", as though watching a movie of the conversation but being detached from it and speaking of the characters in the movie.

Neuro-typical people grow up learning that other people are independent centers of consciousness in their own right just as they are, so develop an understanding of managing interactions with others recognizing boundaries and navigating one's way, being prepared to apologize when one gets it wrong and forgive on the other hand. Aspergers people see this process as chaos with others jockeying for position and see no point to it, they just decide how things should be arranged and order others to behave as they see fit. Think of one's dream life to get a handle on how they see the world and write down an account of your dream. It will be different from an account of an event in real life.
