Statement Analysis: Aaron Hernandez Letter

The headlines say that Aaron Hernandez denies committing murder in a letter from jail.

Does he?

An innocent person will say that he did not do it, early on.

What to look for:  "I did not kill..." or "I did not shoot", or "I did not..." with the specific allegation.

The letter is here:

http://tmz.vo.llnwd.net/o28/newsdesk/tmz_documents/0801_aaron_hernandez_letter.pdf

Remember, one can truthfully say:

"I am innocent" because he has not been proven guilty.
"I am not guilty" because he has not been proven guilty in a court of law.
"I am a good person" because he may believe it so...

but does he plainly tell us, early and perhaps often, that he did not do it?

  1. Hi Peter,i think the blank space under this article is the letter transcript,it hasn't worked.

    Here it is again..

Here's the complete contents of the letter:

Your letter meant alot and was very true! I know everything happens for a reason and I know 'God' has a plan for me and something good will come out of this. The world just makes things out of false accusations and it will all die down especially when they say NOT GUILTY and all the people who turned on me will feel like crap. I've always been a great person an[d] known for having an amazing heart! I am a strong person and nothing will break me! A [correctional officer] will never nor can they say now for one day have I been down or not with a smile on my face. I know there is a reason I'm going thru this and I will figure it out through my relationship with the Lord. I fell off especially after making all that money but when its all said and done 'God' put me in the situation for a reason. I'm humbled by this ALREADY and this will change me forever. At least I'll know my true supporters. Thanks for being one of them!

  2. Well, at least HE thinks he is an amazing guy!

  3. rob
He didn't say he was an amazing guy. In fact he refers to himself as a "person" which is gender neutral. Interesting for someone to refer to himself as a person, when they are in jail. He states that he has an "amazing" heart. One may want to know what in his mind constitutes having an amazing heart. I'm sure ones he goes into detail, we'd be sorely disappointed.

  4. Your letter meant a lot and was very true!
--it meant a lot to “who” he didn’t say it meant a lot of him. He reduced the commitment by adding “very” true.

I know everything happens for a reason and I
Know “God” has a plan for me and something
Good will come out of this.
--He refers to “God” has a plan for him. In other references he refers to “God” as the Lord. Change in reality may not be justified, except when referring to his relationship with God, then it becomes “the Lord”.

    The world just
Makes things out of false accusations and
It will all die down especially when they say
NOT Guilty and all the people who turned on
    Me will feel like crap.
--He says the World just (minimization) makes things out of false accusations. He doesn’t say that false accusations were made about him, just that the world makes things out of false accusations. The fact he chose the “world” as opposed to “people” may be that he is aware that “the world” is aware of what he did, and he knows the reaction the "world" had to what he did. For someone who is narcissistic this may have affected impacted him. Narcissists need to be liked by all.
--If this is leaking – he chose to use the word “die” down.
--He appears to be hoping for things to “die down” a bit, so he can go about his business.

  5. Ive always been a
Great person an known for having an amazing
    Heart!
-- He is gender neutral here. He has always been a great person. Perhaps he dropped the soap in the shower already?

I am a strong person and nothing will
    Break me!
-- He describes himself as a strong person (gender neutral again!). And nothing will break him. Perhaps something else was “broken” – maybe in the shower?

  6. A C.O. will never nor can they
Say now for one day have I been down or
Not with a smile on my face.
--He said a CO (I gather this to be a corrections officer) never (which is not a reliable denial) nor can they say (future- he apparently intends to be happy in the future) that he has been down. Maybe he’s been leaning forward or bending down, but not been down. What we say in the negative is important. And this is the only thing he says in the negative. We can safely say he’s been down and there was a moment where he didn’t have a smile on his face. Maybe it was a deep groan that looked like a smile.

I know there Is a reason Im going thru this and I will Figure it out through my relationship with the
    Lord.
--Here is the change in reality. He indicates that he will (future tense) figure it out. He hasn't figured it out, only that he "will".

    ReplyDelete
  7. I fell off especially after making
All that money but when its all said and Done “GOD” put me in the situation for a
    Reason!
--He refers to all “that” money (distant), apparently all that money is decreasing rapidly. Now “God” put him in “the” situation.
God is responsible for putting him in his predicament, but he has a relationship with "The Lord".

    Im humbled by this AIRLADY
And this will change me forever.
--He is humbled by “this” (closeness) and “this” (closeness) will (future tense) change him forever.

I guess figuring it out and changing are something that hasn't happened yet to him.

  8. Oh Please! The letter clearly reads like a message to the public. Hernandez is not naive enough to think it would be kept private that's why the bottom of the letter reads,
"Keep this off social media PLEASE!".

He does this because he knows that the letter will go to the media and by requesting that the letter not go to the media he has now shown that the pen pal is a jerk.

    2 points for team Hernandez.

    ReplyDelete
  9. "I'm humbled by this ALREADY and this will change me forever."

Why is he humbled already? Is there a standard time to be humbled by being arrested and sent to jail for possible murder?
"this will", as opposed to this HAS changed me forever. He's talking future tense, not present tense.

Why is "God" in quotations for him? Why is Lord not in quotations. For him, what is the difference between "God" and Lord ?

"I know there is a reason I'm going thru this and i will figure it out through my relationship with the Lord."

Is he not able to figure this out through his lawyer? Does the Lord have to reveal something to him. I'm sure they've told him by now why is being held in jail.

"I fell off especially after making all that money..."

Well Hernandez, what was your life like before you "fell off"? What were your actions and behaviour that would constitute falling off?

"...'God' put me in the situation for a reason."

No Hernandez, YOU put yourself into the situation for a reason.

"The world just makes things out of false accusations..."

To him, what are the "false accusations"?

"Can't wait to sign this again when I'm playing again..."

That's his focus; playing again. I doubt his focus is on being genuinely transformed for the better and making a lifestyle change. He wants to go right back to where he left off before going to jail.

    1. Putting God in quotations is telling. God is to blame, not Aaron. Aaron does not proclaim faith in God... Quite the opposite. I don't see Aaron giving God credit for anything other than messing up his life as he knew it. Putting God in quotations is non committal ... It's like Aaron is saying ""god....whatever the $?*# THAT is"
Being humble...a person that is humble does not go around telling everyone how humble they are....juss sayin!

  10. He did this on purpose for the media.

That I believe. He played himself up, then put that not to keep out of the media in there to make it APPEAR like he didnt write this for the sole purpose of "looking" like a good guy.

And if one more of these A#$@&#&# talk about their relationship with god I am going to lose it. Do these guys really even believe in god or are they just talking themselves up.

Cause if they do believe, I think there was some rule like "thou shal not kill".......

    ReplyDelete
  11. Did this guy grow up in a family where killing people was so common place as to be acceptable?, especially if God was mentioned for emphasis?
He has got to have more in his background...just has to.
    This note is bizarre.

  12. There are 4 primary indicators which reveal not just an admission of guilt, but a confession. A confession by definition means that Aaron knows what he did was wrong and he admits that he did it. The first primary indicator is known as trying to convince someone instead of conveying the truth. 12% of his approximately 24 lines he uses to try to convince the reader that he has "always been a great person an [sic] known for having an amazing heart!...." Immediately following that, the second indicator, is what is considered an unimportant statement which in effect shows the writer slowing down the pace of his mental processing and written statement. 21% of his entire statement he devotes to how he always has a smile on his face, etc. What's significant is that this slowing alerts us to the important statement he makes immediately after that. The third indicator: "I fell off especially after making all that money but when its [sic} all said and done "GOD" put me in the situation for a reason!" Aaron is telling the truth. He's confessing that he did it and that he was put in the situation for a reason. Lastly, he states that "this will change me forever." Again, he is telling the truth. He knows his life will never be the same.

  14. What struck me were how vague and generalised his words – something, the world, things, they, people, this, haters. He avoids mentioning anyone by name, or any situation or place specifically, let alone denying anything. It’s like he’s glossing over things.

He also comes across as a classic narcissist. The whole letter is about him, how great he is and some special divine providence he’s due for, followed by the great day of reckoning where all the haters will be put back in their place.

  15. OT..Dylan Redwine.

    Update:

UNM bone expert comments on Dylan Redwine investigation.

Dr. Heather Edgar draws conclusions from similar cases.

Dylan Redwine, who was visiting his father's home near Vallecito Lake, was declared missing in November 2012. Seven months later, his remains were found in a densely wooded area near Middle Mountain Road, north of Vallecito Lake.

Authorities declared his death a homicide investigation.

Mark Redwine, Dylan's father, told Action 7 News that investigators told him his son's fingertip was found alongside a coyote's droppings.

Edgar thinks it is very likely that wherever Dylan's remains were found was not the location where he was killed.

"Other cases that I have worked on that are similar to this go unresolved," Edgar said. "Unless you have whatever was the trauma that caused death affected the bones directly, investigation will be unable to determine the cause of death."

Edgar said a further search is probably necessary to uncover more information.

"I would search the area for clothing and all those kind of cultural materials, because it is unlikely that the biological evidence is going to provide a lot," she said.

  19. I agree sidewalk. In what kind of environment is it okay to kill people who (apparently) talk about you a perceived way? I don't think AH recently developed his particular brand of narcissism. Although, his father died when he was 16(?), I think I read; he's angry at God(?).

I don't think he believe in "God". If he does, he doesn't honor Him. I think his letter is his typical response when in trouble. It's projecting what he thinks people (supporters) will buy into, what he wants them to think is true.

AH is like a DiePietro-keep lying, they still gotta "prove" it.

  20. I read a blog about this story, I wish I could find it now. The blogger pointed out some language that would indicate a familiarity with SA principles, pointing out the priority of what the AP writer wanted us to know: a slutty 35 year old smoker died because she didn't listen to her man friend. I'll try to find the link for those interested in the bloggers take. Here is the original AP writer's version of events:

  24. It will all die down especially when they say NOT Guilty and all the people who turned on me will feel like crap.

An innocent person would not want things to die down, they would want the investigation to continue.

He is more interested in making the people who turned on him feel like crap than proclaiming his innocence. I think this murder was the result of someone turning on him so this may serve as a warning to others.
