Heather Elvis: Police Statement

That this beautiful young girl met with foul play at the hands of Tammy and Sidney Moorer is unthinkable and an unbearable thought that the Elvis family has had to live with likely since the beginning.

Terry Elvis, the courageous father of Heather, sought to gain information, as did his friends, directly from those who had the information:  Tammy and Sidney Moorer. Hence, the vicious rant of Tammy Moorer against him, and against Heather.

That Tammy Moorer did not seek to conceal her contempt of Heather and Terry Elvis is a frightening and sobering thought.

Both will be in court this morning as we should learn more about the kidnapping charges.

Kidnapping charges, along with obstruction charges, indicate that not only was Heather either restrained or restricted from calling 911, but that these two took deliberate steps to hinder the investigation; that is, to obstruct the process of justice for Heather Elvis.

The Moorers have separate attorneys.

“A search warrant was executed in an attempt to identify potential evidence based on new information obtained through expert analysis of previously seized surveillance tapes in the area along with financial discrepancies filed with the state of South Carolina on behalf of the occupants of the residence."

That surveillance tapes are mentioned is likely tied to the kidnapping charges.

Also:  In past successful police work, it was accepted that criminal behavior did not exist in a vacuum and that those who engaged in serious crime likely had other behaviors that were illegal.  If someone was suspected in a major crime, but had committed lesser crimes, police often arrested them on the lesser charges while continuing to investigate the serious charges, allowing the subject time to consider making a deal with prosecutors.

I believe that this is the route that should have been taken in the Hailey Dunn murder case, as there were a multitude of charges that could have been brought against Billie Jean Dunn and Shawn Adkins.  It is my belief that Shawn Adkins would have sought a deal.

This may be the case of legally and lawfully getting to the information on what happened to Heather Elvis.

Couple Charged in Heather Elvis' Disappearance

Sidney and Tammy Moorer were charged with kidnapping the 20-year-old

A break in the case of a young woman who vanished in South Carolina. A married couple have been arrested in connection with the sudden disappearance op heather Elvis. Reena ninan has the details.

Reporter: This morning, a South Carolina couple believed to be linked to the mysterious disappearance of student heather Elvis has been charged with kidnaps. I believe they were involved. If they didn't do something to her, they know who did.

Reporter: Her father checked her cell phone records. One number appeared multiple times, belonging to Sidney Mo Moorer. According to coworkers, she had a relationship with this gentleman.

I didn't foe anything about it. Reporter: Heather vanished. Police believe she trove there willingly, but have no idea why.

Her car was parked where it shouldn't be. She was nowhere to be found. It was locked.

No one was answering her phone. Reporter: Moorer and his wife were charged on Sunday. Police haven't said why..

They're parents.. They have children. I think it would do them good to think about how we feel.

Reporter: The attorney said Sidney has no connection to or knowledge of facts surrounding the disappearance of heather Elvis. To the best of my knowledge, tammy does not know heather Elvis at all. I don't think they have ever met.

Reporter: The new kidnapping charge is a small victory for the Elvis family. They say it's not enough. If heather's safe, if she's unharm, I don't care what they do with them

  11. Tammy and Sidney Moorer, the couple arrested Friday in connection with the disappearance of Heather Elvis, 20, will be charged with her murder today, according to Horry County Police Chief Saundra Rhodes.

The announcement came Monday morning in a news conference held by police.

On Friday, a search warrant was executed at the Moorer's property.

Evidence gathered at the property and in the home is what led to the murder charge, Rhodes said.

The bond hearing on the murder charge will be held the week of March 17.

Rhodes made it clear in the news conference that Heather Elvis has not been located but they had enough probable cause evidence to file the murder charge. She would not go into detail on that evidence.

On Friday, the Moorers were taken into custody.

Saturday, they were charged with Obstruction of Justice and Indecent Exposure.

On Sunday, they were charged with the kidnapping of Heather Elvis.

Pride is the excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

How many of these sins might God charge and judge Tammy with?

  16. @Polywog - Sad to say but it may be true. Whether it's been any different since Casey Anthony got away with it or not, there have been several cases where people do appear to be getting away with it. Isobel Celis, Hailey Dunn, Haleigh Cummings, Ayla Reynolds all come to mind immediately.
I am surprised that most of them don't even result in a trial. If they did I suspect that they wouldn't end up with the same absurd results as Casey (killer)Anthony's did. It is disturbing that the people who committed the crimes have managed to elude arrest this long and may have gotten away with the crime. I cannot imagine how these people manage to hide bodies and evidence as well as they do. I wonder if there is an increase in people's ability to get information about how to do that and if that is part of the problem. Do crime shows inadvertently help people to be better criminals?

    1. I think it is also police having to get enough evidence for the prosecutors to take on the case when they have enough evidence. Whether its being afraid to go against these well seasoned defense attorneys. They want to make sure the slam dunk but do not take the risk of losing and either so much publicity they don't want to soil their reputation or fraid of double jeopardy. I don't think it is the police as much as prosecutors. Two cases I think are good examples Ayla Reynolds and all the spilled blojd but not jnowing which of the three suspects to charge. The Hailey Dunn case is another, the least they could do is use the child porn as leverage or go after the maximum for those charges if they don't have enough for murder (like Haleigh Cumming case).

THOSE WAS CASES SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THIS POLICE DEPARTMENT THEY DID IT RIGHT!

  17. So the indecent exposure incidents both took place the same day/night Heather went missing? Dec. 17 & 18. One location of the indecent exposure charge was 1325 Celebrity Circle, which is Broadway at the Beach area. The Tilted Kilt, where Heather worked, is located at 1317 Celebrity Circle, part of Broadway @ the Beach. Just so strange.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's ery strange. I am also very curious as to the type of evidence they found at the home that led to murder charges. If they were seen somehow on a camera forcing Heather into a vehicle, kidnapping would make sense but there has to be more than led them to charge both Moorers with murder.

  26. Absolutely heartbreaking for Heather's family.
I am still trying to make sense of sequence of events. The indecent exposure occurred the same night/during the time Heather was on
the date? And supposedly near her work? Did Sidney know about her date, but think maybe they were at her workplace and go fool around with Tammy in parking lot to try to make her jealous?
They must have lured her out to the dock.
    Awful.
I wonder what they found at the house? Since Tammy seemed to like to write about everything she did day to day, maybe she wrote some kind of journal entry about what they did to Heather, kind of like Ariel Castro's sick diary?

guess sidney and tammy got separate lawyers. sidney's lawyer sounds much more confident than Tammy's. Terry talks about letting them loose, he doesn't care.

This is forever the weirdest case.

I mean it might be "normal" , love triangle murder -- but it's weird,

from lawyers statementns seems it's possible Tammy acted alone., but Sidney was involved - we can assume - at least in the set up and coverup. admit I really wonder how it went down,

so sad to think she was for sure murdered, though they don't have body. but -- ugh --- murder is real. ;(

  28. It just is so dumb I mean all murder is dumb but this goes beyond I mean they had to know they were going to be the first suspects no matter what even if they were innocent because of his relationship they would be the obvious first perso to question. I feel so bad for her family I hope they can get some sense of justice.

seems like they were rewriting the history or going on some disney tour of the affair - making it their adventure now.

    ReplyDelete
  31. if I was their lawyer(s) I would argue that all that public sex was their alibi. and that the reason they didn;t say that's where they were at time of murder is because they didn't want to incriminate themselves for the indecent exposure crime.

it actually does seem hard to fit it all in in that time frame.

  32. http://www.wbtw.com/story/24804575/murder-charges-added-for-horry-county-couple-in-connection-with-heather-elvis-case
This lists where Tammy exposed herself publicly. I believe the reason for the arrest being related to Heather Elvis is because she was exposing herself either in front of Heather Elvis or sending pictures of herself to Heather Elvis showing that she was in a public place near her. She was taunting her prior to Heather going missing.

On 12/20 she told the police a lie about her and her husband's whereabouts on 12/18.

The police have a lot of information. How they were able to get the pictures she texted Heather remains a mystery, but they got them.

Tammy's lawyer on statement said to the best of his knowledge he doesn't believe Tammy ever met Heather. This means that to the best of someone else's knowledge there is evidence that she did meet her. He's hoping to see that evidence so that he can proceed from there. Also, he stated he doesn't believe that she ever met Heather, which means others believe differently. It was a very weak statement from Tammy's lawyer. Looks like Tammy's in a heap a trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It just boggles the mind. The timing of the indecent exposure incidents is the exact time of Heather's disappearance - occurring on the 17th/18th of Dec. makes me think late night on the 17th, early hours of the 18th. So, were these incidents to occur just before they kidnapped Heather, or even more mind twisting, while they were holding her? Perhaps the surveillance that revealed the exposure also revealed that they had Heather?

  40. I don’t think criminals are getting smarter. I think police are getting stupider or in some cases, are also just as corrupt.

I still think that is what happens in the Hailey Dunn case. I mean the day she is reported missing Shawn lied about being at work. Mom lied about him being at work. Then lied and said he was fired. Then lied and said he was…. I mean, the simple fact that they are lying about their whereabouts the day a child goes missing and nothing is done. They got rid of a couch in the home. Painted the walls. And so many things they could have hauled them in for and they did nothing at all.

With the Casey Anthony case, I think the jurors were lacking in some common sense. BUT… let’s not forget the fact that it was never discovered by the prosecution until after that there were internet searches done in Fox Fire that were not checked. That was for sure Casey as it was the browser she preferred. And those searches to include “fool proof suffocation” I think would have got her convicted.

Its police now days. I think the police in this case were doing their jobs and did everything they could to get results.

    1. I think a lot of it is the prosecutors. The please can bring them enough evidence but if it's a high profile case and they don't think it's a slam dunk they stall. Whether it's saving reputation or not wanting double jeopardy to come into play.

I said earlier sorry I'm repeating but in Hailey Dunns case the police should be taking notes! Charge them for the chilldporn atleast as leverage and go from there or throw the book at them like the Haileigh Cumming case. It seems no matter how much evidence they bring them the prosecutor wont prosecute. So I'm a little bit hesitant to put it all on the police.

  41. I think they were taunting Heather, texting pictures to her of them having sex. I also think LE has had these texts all along. They were finally able with "expert analysis" and "enhancement" , probably from the FBI lab, get a time and place for the pictures. That enabled LE to get a search warrant and do the beginning charges.

What they found during the search obviously brought on the kidnapping and murder charges.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I find it morbidly interesting that Sidney chose Tammy over Heather/ did he just really love her that much - were they of the same mind over all of this? was he swayed by wanting to favor the mother of his children? was he being blackmailed by her?

my guess is he felt he was doing the "right thing" because she was the mother of his children and his wife/family. and perhaps the one person why "really knew him" and that was the connection he couldn't lose.

but I feel that many men would not have gone along with their wives on this -- why he did -- makes me very curious

    1. Hi Maggie,

I think this is expected in the sense that, with the kidnapping, (and now murder charges) TE is faced with the reality of the worst possible outcome.

I understand his dilemma, although it's hard to articulate. The kidnapping and murder charges mean facing that his little girl is dead, and the punishment of those responsible will not bring her back. The anger and wrath he felt days ago, likely pales in comparison to the pain and profound loss he feels now, and the permanence of death.

I can understand him feeling ambivalent about the punishment, as it will not end his pain and will not restore his daughters life. He wouldn't care what happened to them, IF he could only have Heather back, ALIVE.

This is heartbreaking. Heather was so young, with her whole life ahead of her. She was robbed of her future, and truly, no punishment will ever be enough. God bless the Elvis family, and give them strength in their grief.

  47. Maggie,
The police chief said with "expert analysis and enhancement" across the area. They could have blown up the text photos for any observable background, then cross-checked that against video of the Moorer's vehicle sitting at that spot at a certain time. Only a guess. I believe the FBI lab does stuff like that and it would take awhile.

You don't understand? You must not be a parent.

He's saying that the only thing in the world that matters, the most important thing to him and his grieving family, is that Heather is still alive. He' saying that even if they did something to her, if his baby girl is alive and well, the authorities could release the nasty Moorers for all he cares.

It was obviously a statement he made before the pair were charged with the murder of the daughter he parented for 20 years.

Now, if he continues to stay strong, vocal and outspoken -- as would any loving parent of a missing child -- we can expect to see him at their trials and we can expect his to cry out for justice for the death of Heather.

  60. I just had a chance to watch the video attached to the link (wasn't able to watch it earlier bc it wasn't working on my phone).
First, let me say, the more I learn about Tammy, the more she comes into focus as someone who is personality disordered and who seems sociopathic (smile in mugshot) and who, therefore, along with having motive, seems the likely culprit for this crime along with Sidney. I can't say I totally understand Terry's response (I know anon is not happy with me). I just now did watch the video and he does also refer to Sidney as a "gentleman" (soft language--unexpected). How do you go up and down like that? I am not sure. His postings were full of conviction, condemnation, and wrath (rightfully so) and to hear him speaking in a civil, almost forgiving tone when these 2 are arrested and being charged with serious crimes (kidnapping at the time of the interview) I am not sure why there would be any softening up on them if only for the over two months of mental torture he and his family have been through. Maybe emotional exhaustion takes it's toll, or maybe even a sense of shock had set in.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Terry very rarely says things that don't set off red flags for me too.

and I repeatedly wonder if at the least -- Heather was effected by or carried some of these personality traits -- which made her drawn to trouble and obsession rather than steer clear of it.

and I realize this comment will probably get removed about as fast as I post it.

but I think the real devil here is Tammy. (and sidney) and nobody is responsible but who is responsible.

and all others are innocent victims.

makes me think of a post heather left on her twitter -- something about -- "I'm in trouble - watch me go in deeper." we so so rarely ever know when that instinct is true danger or just uncharted adventure. she could have been just fine as trouble hungry as she was if Tammy had not been around.

  62. Polywog, I've been giving a lot of thought to your post about "all murder is dumb but this goes beyond I mean they had to know they were going to be the first suspects no matter what".
I keep wondering if TM thinks it was worth it? Consider all she has lost(and trying to imagine what TM would value): control of her husband, her Disney trips, her Facebook/computer accounts and time surfing the net, her makeup and clothes, her Mickey trailer, her house, her kids, her own choice of food, being able to tell someone off and then go tell everyone else about it from her POV.
The warrant reads with "malice of forethought" but I wonder how much forethought went into this horrific act. I"m guessing that SM just went along with TM's wishes in this and he has lost just as much as her...all their freedom except the freedom of their own thoughts really. So-was it worth it?
I wish crazy would just take a step back and think before it acts. Heather is gone. For what? Nothing. It's just destruction. The Elvis family is left to carry on, they have to walk through the rubble of loss and trial and find their way. It is a journey they should not have had to make.

  64. Maggie,

I think that Terry Elvis is possibly being gentle with his words in hopes that the weaker, more human of the two Sidney will feel remorse and tell LE what they did with Heather's body? An appeal to his humanity perhaps?

Do crime shows inadvertently help people to be better criminals?

Possibly but fingerprint detection and analysis has been around for almost a hundred years (I'm guessing how long) and still criminals leave their fingerprints all the time. Just because people have knowledge doesn't necessarily mean their brain knows how to apply it.

  66. Two thoughts:
    1) The picture of SM showing the Tammy tattoo...that is one ugly tattoo and an ugly pair of Mickey Mouse boxers.
    2) I'd love to know if the fact that Sidney can be made to spell Disney just by swapping 2 letters had anything to do with TM's attraction to him. She probably saw it as fate.
