Mother Blames Self for Baby Ayla

Trista Reynolds blamed herself, saying if it were not for her addiction, Ayla never would have been in Waterville, subject to the bloodshed that took place in Phoebe DiPietro's basement, at the hands of Ayla's father, Justin DiPietro.

Parents are always ultimately responsible, but it should be remembered always that it was not her hands that bruised, battered, and eventually took the life of Baby Ayla.

Maine prosecutors should carefully consider the work done elsewhere, where successful murder prosecution has taken place, without the child's body being found.

Ayla Reynolds was reported "missing" by her father, a mere 6 weeks after the single, unemployed father bought a life insurance against Ayla's life, profiting off of her death.  He telegraphed his plans, via text messages of 'concern of kidnapping' to Trista Reynolds in the interim.

Police officially state that DiPietro, his sister, Elisha DiPietro, and his girlfriend, Courtney Roberts, have, in concert, all lied about what took place that night.

The grandmother deceived media when she said she "heard nothing" that night, only to later admit she was not in the home, highlighting the very need she had to be deceptive to protect her son.

GORHAM, Maine — A coffee cup, a vase, a water bottle, a magnetic refrigerator calendar, dog-eared photos and a T-shirt now worn and faded, all with beaming, blond-haired Ayla Reynolds on them.
There are reminders of the missing little girl all over her mother’s apartment — not that Trista Reynolds needs reminders — but pictures and memories are no substitute for a running, jumping, laughing and sometimes screaming child. And they certainly can’t take the place of a living and breathing two-year-old girl.
“There are days I can’t even hear her voice anymore,” said Reynolds. “That’s not OK.”
As horrible as losing Ayla was, Reynolds said she’s thankful for a lot. A year ago, even before her daughter’s disappearance, Reynolds faced losing both of her children. Her running, jumping, laughing and sometimes screaming son Raymond, now the same age as Ayla was when she vanished, is a daily reminder of how close addiction to drugs and alcohol came to taking everything.
Reynolds, who was in an addiction rehabilitation program last year before Ayla’s disappearance, said the toddler never would have been in Waterville, where she disappeared from, if it weren’t for Reynolds’ hospitalization. Reynolds said she partially blames herself for everything that has happened, but is grateful it’s not worse.
“I couldn’t imagine myself losing both of my kids because of my stupid mistakes,” said Reynolds. “I have lost a lot because of having an addiction. I lost Ayla from it.”
Raymond is still too young to understand, though a glimpse of his sister’s picture has him babbling her name in toddler-speak that only his family can decipher. Most people say Raymond is a mirror image of his sister, and Reynolds said the mischief in his smile when he’s throwing clothing all over his room or fiddling with the telephone is the same as Ayla’s. And he dances just like she did whenever Ayla’s favorite song plays on the radio — Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.”
“Sometimes it’s like she’s still with me,” said Reynolds.
Reynolds, now sober and living in an apartment in Gorham after months of living with family members, said Raymond’s well-being is her singular focus. She knows there are difficult conversations ahead, especially when it comes to his sister.
“When I look at him I think, ‘what will I tell him?’” she said. “I haven’t been able to put it into words yet. I don’t want to tell him something and have him start to blame me.”
Rarely, if ever, has a missing-person case in Maine attracted so much attention. Still, Trista fears her daughter is gradually being forgotten. After a months-long national media deluge, calls from reporters have grown scarce and new information from investigators is at a standstill. Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Sunday what he’s said for months: No new developments. The case remains open and active.
Reynolds was reported missing on December 17, 2011, by her father, Justin DiPietro of Waterville. Police ruled out the possibility that Ayla was abducted early in the investigation and have said repeatedly that they believe DiPietro and others who were staying at the home last December know more about the case than they are telling detectives. In January, they announced that they’d found Ayla’s blood in DiPietro’s basement and in May, they said they no longer believed Ayla was alive. Investigators have periodically performed searches of bridges and waterways around Waterville, but said those efforts have turned up nothing related to the case.
Reynolds said her grief is still searing, but it’s evolved.
“It’s still painful, but I have been able to cope a lot better lately,” she said. “I’m always thinking about how how tall she’d be right now and what words she’d have. I imagine that her beautiful blue eyes are looking right through that blue sky down at me.

Sorry, this is off topic, but Peter I was wondering if you have heard of the Nga Truong case in Worcester, MA--coerced confession that got thrown out after a 16 yr old girl spent 3 yrs. in jail accused of smothering her baby who was ill at the time. Anyway, the police lie to her throughout the interrogation and she finally confesses when they promise if she confesses they will get her and her brothers help from social services. Very disturbing the way she is coerced. She does say in the tape at one point "I did not kill him." Interrogation tapes are online.

Maggie said...

Also the police promise her that if she confesses the punishment will be "minimal" if there is any at all.

Maggie said...

Got reminded of the case because it is on the front page of the paper today as she is suing the police dep/city. A judge threw out her confession after she spent, I believe 3 yrs. in prison.

I was so hopeful that little Ayla would be found by now, and that her murderer(s) and accomplice(s) would be behind bars.

This is such a tragedy !

Prayers that Ayla will be found and that there will be Justice !

Sorry for the off topic here, but I was wondering if Peter, or another poster can help me out on this.

I am really disgusted by Obama's comments at the recent Kennedy Center Honors regarding the legednary rock back Led Zeppelin. I thought Obama's remarks were totally inappropriate.

Here is a sample from http://www.usatoday.com/story/theoval/2012/12/03/obama-kennedy-center-led-zeppelin-letterman-hoffman/1742101/:

Obama On Led Zeppelin:

"Of course, these guys also redefined the rock and roll lifestyle. We do not have video of this. But there was some hotel rooms trashed and mayhem all around. So it's fitting that we're doing this in a room with windows that are about three inches thick ... and Secret Service all around ... So, guys, just settle down."

Obama is NOT a "comedian", in fact, he is really "nothing" in my opinion.

Why was it so difficult for Obama to PRAISE Zeppelin for their music ?

I know and I understand that many people do not like Led Zeppelin ... I listened to them growing up and thought they were just okay -- and only recently have I become a "fan."

Any thoughts ?

I am fascinated by how the human mind projects onto others whatever we've already determined we will see. It seems to me that you're the one having a problem "praising" Led Zeppelin and you make it clear that you think President Obama is "nothing." Somehow you've managed to twist this minimally important issue into more proof to support your admitted dislike of the President. So you actually agree with what you perceive the Presidents opinion to be, which is that they are just an okay band, but somehow he deserves criticism for that opinion.

The fact that your desire to criticize President Obama is so important to you that you've inserted it into a discussion about a probable murdered child is extraordinarily mind blowing to me.

I feel very sorry for Trista...I can only imagine how hard it must be to face up to her own role in Ayla's death and recognize that along with everything else her addiction has cost her (and I'm sure it's a lot), her precious Ayla is the one thing that she can never get back. Trista may have completely turned her life around, but sadly she will still never regain the most precious gift that drug abuse has stolen from her. A mother would feel guilt in any scenario where her child met with harm but in the end the blame lies with only her killer, her own father who schemed and plotted, bought a life ins. policy on his toddler and then set his evil plan for her to have a fatal 'accident' into motion.

Her son is beautiful & I pray that thru Gods grace she will not relapse, and that the loss of Ayla will motivate her to work on her sobriety each and every day. I also pray that the DiP's and those who have concealed the evil done to Ayla will face justice, sooner than later...

Maggie,

I read up on the story you recommended (above). WOW! It's not only an example of bad interrogating by LE; but may as well be a cautionary tale of overburdened, under educated immigrant family dynamics; as epic of a story as The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck.(IMO)

She never had read books until she got to jail, at 16 years old. And by then, two infants had died in her care.

She does give a couple of strong (aka: reliable) denials, but also says, "she wil-would (she studdered here - she started to say will "never", changed to "would" never...sounded like "wo-illn't") never hurt my own child" in a more recent video, after her release.

Sad story, all the way around.

Thank you for sharing it. I like to stay informed!

Mainah--I am glad that you read up on the case! I figured I should share it here because I knew Peter and/or you all would have some good insights into the whole thing. The police dep. is still not admitting any wrong-doing in the interrogation which is just
mind-blowing! I agree she does give some strong denials although there are some "would nevers". The confession itself is perplexing as they tell her exactly what to say. Then after she says it, when they follow up asking for details--the lack of detail she supplies here is what really strikes me. It really does seem like she is just saying the bare minimum they want to hear so that she can "go home" which is what she believed she would be allowed to do once she "confessed". Definitely an interrogation gone bad as they are calling it.

Watch Sergio - Katie Couric Show

He now claims that he honestly didn't think Isabelle was missing at first,, he actually first thought, that she was taken by Becky's brother out to breakfast, or taken by her Aunt ..

Holy sheep dip is he spinning it to the National viewing audience or what? Isabelle was scheduled to play softball at 9 am that morning.

Becky's brother or her Aunt
"crept" into the house? sneaked her out? what they climbed in through Isa's window? Since he is attempting to authenticate now he actually didn't have an Iota she was missing...

They think what? no one listened to the 911 call? They are both lying on national TV. Becky says she first went into Isabelle's bedroom once she came home frantic. NO she didn't. It's all on the 911 call. Sergie asks her what was Isa Wearing? ! She then takes the cell phone from Sergie JR. He standing outside the house. She is asked her name, who she is, as the 911 operator is confused. Sergie Jr was the first one to call 911 from a neighbors cell. Sergio shitbag was on his phone calling in afterward. He to say oh my wife just pulled up, he with his snickers, I told her to get her butt home.

Listen to the Lies, I mean liars - You have to scroll down, end of the page. Watch Becky, listen to her voice pattern, she has adopted Sergio's speak. She now is chicken nodding alike her Mealy Husband. Sergio " we are victims" - I cannot even watch it. They both disgust me.

So it's fitting that we're doing this in a room with windows that are about three inches thick ... and Secret Service all around ... So, guys, just settle down."

Because Mizz Marple this is a statement analysis blog, and you are asking for analysis which is not extraordinarily mind blowing to me, since this is the norm I’ve seen here...(Mainah should know that too, but it’s Obama time and we can’t ridicule the moron).

Here goes my stab at it:
"Of course,
--He’s trying to convince you. Perhaps he is also trying to sound as if he is knowledgeable about Led Zeppelin. He may have felt out of the loop since he might have personally listened to a lot of “funk” while Led was playing to mega-crowds.

these guys also redefined the rock and roll lifestyle.
--He is stating that Led in addition to others redefined the rock and roll lifestyle. Although he doesn’t expand on what that lifestyle is, it just reveals how ignorant he is on this topic and is flying by the seat of his pants. – because Americans are so moronic, this is an easy thing to do.

We do not have video of this.
--He does not commit to this statement. He uses we and not I. He doesn’t’ have video of “this” which is close to him. He could have stated there is no video of that, but he is trying to sound like there is “video” out there of it. Remember the words he chooses as they don’t come out of a vacuum. “video” is something that is prevalent in his mind. And…since he is speaking out of his butt…this is critical information he is revealing. The reason he chose “video” is important since recently there have been accusations that there were real-time video of the Benghazi attacks.

But there was some hotel rooms trashed and mayhem all around.
--I didn’t listen to the video, but if he said this, it goes to show you how poor his grammar is and why it is so strange to have a degree from Harvard was it. He should have said, But there were some hotel rooms trashed. He used “but” here which refutes whatever he said previously. There were only some hotel rooms trashed. He was unable to say, there were hotel rooms trashed, so he reduced the value of his statement to some hotel rooms trashed. He is going by what someone said to him earlier to brief him on who he was going to honor and they probably gave him of all things this tidbit of information about Led. Because he doesn’t know for sure if hotel rooms were trashed and is going by3rd hand info, he can only state “some” hotel rooms were trashed.

So it's fitting that we're doing this in a room with windows that are about three inches thick ...
--When you use words like “so” to explain what you are doing it is very sensitive and should be highlighted. They are doing this in a room with windows because Led trashed some rooms.
--Windows has entered his vocabulary. (I’m not sure if there is statement analysis value to this, but I just wanted to point it out) :)
--He used “three” the liars number. He is making this up as he goes along.

and Secret Service all around ... So, guys, just settle down."
-- He has left information out. But what is also interesting tonote is that he chose to use “Secret Service” all around. Is he perhaps thinking of his secret servicemen who were in hotel rooms with Columbian prostitutes perhaps wrecking the rooms in their debauchery? I think this is what he meant. I don’t believe he was insulting Led, he was insulting his secret service men.

George Zimmerman Photo Shows His Bloody Nose.

Trayvon Martin's killer is shown with the injuries he says he received during the fatal confrontation in a Florida neighbourhood.

A newly-released photograph of George Zimmerman shows him with a bloody, swollen nose on the night he shot and killed black teenager Trayvon Martin.

The image was made available by the defence team for the Florida neighbourhood watch volunteer, who is charged with murdering the unarmed 17-year-old in February this year.

Zimmerman claims he shot the teenager in self-defence during a struggle, but the case sparked a national debate and protests on racial profiling, guns and Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground law.

His lawyers say the photo is significant because it shows vividly the injuries that he incurred.

"It's not a game changer," lawyer Mark O'Mara admitted.

But he added: "Does it really show what happened that night to George? Yes."

Previous police images of George Zimmerman and his wounds
However Ben Crump, who represents Trayvon's family, said the photo taken by police in Sanford adds nothing new to the case.

"Trayvon Martin was defending himself. He had every right to stand his ground to defend himself," Mr Crump said.

A grainy, black and white version of the photo was released previously, along with other evidence that Zimmerman was hit in the nose during the fight with the teenager.

Mr O'Mara said he only received the new clearer digital image from prosecutors after repeated demands by his office.

He pledged to make all public documents related to the case available on the defence team's website ahead of the trial set for June next year.

I loved the band, and I find Obama's comment to be hilarious. Let's say Trista Reynolds didn't have an addiction problem that caused her to go into treatment. Let's just hypothetically say that Justin Dipietro had her for that week as part of a visitation agreement. Would the circumstances be any less different in the actions that has been bestowed upon Ayla Reynolds who was supposedly kidnapped and now is missing and most likely DEAD? Would we be blaming Trista Reynolds for the forsaking ultimate outcome that has come upon the DEMISE of Ayla Reynolds. Justice must be served and Justin Dipietro and his cohorts must be held accountable. Not Trista Reynolds. She has admitted to her mistake to having an addiction. John, that's where I was for a long time -a rage killing/cover-up. I could not comprehend a premeditated child murder, until recently. When, after her acquittal, we learned that "the evil one" searched for fool-proof soffocation[sic]. Billie and Shawn worked together, perhaps not with several weeks planning, perhaps with. Families do this sometimes. Not my family and not your family, but some do. It has just entered the realm of possibility, when it hadn't before.

Courtney and Justin planned it for weeks, together, I think. She appears that hateful and selfish and so does he. JMO.

What’s the hardest lesson you’ve learned as a prosecutor?

JoDee Lee Neil, Assistant Criminal District Attorney in Collin County -
"The hardest thing I’ve learned is that the unthinkable really happens. Three years ago I would have told you that I’ve learned the most from my losses in trial, whether it be from an overruled objection, a not guilty verdict, or a piece of evidence that was not admitted. Since then, however, I’ve learned more about human nature than I ever expected to learn. Although prosecuting crimes against children proved to be a rewarding experience, it was also an eye-opening expression of the actual world where we live. I learned that not all fathers treasure their daughters, that not all mothers protect, and that to some people, a baby isn’t a precious gift. I’ve learned that cycles are difficult to break, that some people don’t care at all that they hurt other people, and that a lot of people are in so much pain.

I’ve learned that good can prevail in spite of the filthy crimes others commit and that a small voice is sometimes the loudest. Most importantly, I’ve learned that one person can make a difference in the life of someone else. It is not easy, but it is worth it."

I read the Zeppelin comments as a form of put-down while trying to be the oh-so-hip campaigner. Business as usual, "ME" "ME" "ME".
It is hard for that man to share the spotlight.

"john p, shouldn't you be off getting drunk and beating your wife?"

"trista is an ugly whore and a dumb one at that. she earned this."

Peter, I have a question; are the statements from this fool an example of a quilty person "deflecting"? Or just the ramblings of a fool of whom the phrase "This is your brain on drugs", was coined after? When "it" said "She Earned This", does "it" mean Trista earned insults from a fool or Trista "Earned" having her child harmed and missing? It's hard to consider "it's" comments as anything valid, coming from anyone of value when "it" does not appear to be operating "it's" keyboard with a healthy supply of grey matter.

Oh and anon, YES, the "it" is you. I would be insulting the human race if I labelled you a him or her. One question for you...... Are you in a position to actually know John P is a drunk who beats his wife or that Trista is a dumb whore who earned this, or are you somehow involved in delivering to Trista, what she earned?
Sorry, it's a run-on question I know, but honestly I didn't think, with your limited thought process that proper grammer is important to you. Now please, leave the drugs/booze alone! Save whatever brain cells you have left and learn how to play nice in the playground.

Yes -- a "form of a put-down" -- and he was trying to be "hip".

And you are so right -- he does NOT like to share the "spotlight"!

Thank You !

The first (most important) part of your comment insults John P. while the second part of your comment insults Trista. Why would your anger towards John be so important? Why would you be angry at someone who is working to try and get answers and justice for Ayla?

Lin I can answer your question for you Anon December 6, 2012 12:18 AM has no idea who or what I am.

Mama, I think he listed me first because I made another accusation towards Derek and Justin on Monday, then Trista was listed second because she confirmed it. So that according to SA would explain the vulgar, disrespectful, liablous, and slanderous remarks of "it".

Feed a cold, starve a troll.

Don't respond to nonsense where the anonymous poster merely wants attention, even negative attention, at the cost of decency.

Regarding Trista: her life was a mess and she took ownership of her own actions which led to allowing a monster to take care of Ayla.

Her pain will never end, though I pray it is alleviated as she is busy with her son, and rebuilding her life.

She is also a victim of DiPietro violence and deception.

Maggie,

the case sounds interesting. Do you have statements for analysis?

Coerced confessions are deceptive.

We can know.

Peter

Sorry Peter you are right. I should probably ask you to remove my comment 12:05 PM. I was experiencing what I considered understandable anger towards that comment.

I do agree though that Trista's heartache, blame and feeling of emptiness is probably never going away completely. I trust MSP though, and when they solve this case, Trista will be a little closer. Not much but a little at least!

Hi Peter,

Here is a link with good statements quoted, the "coerced confession" case Maggie mentioned above. I've been reading up on it. It's very interesting. This article doesn't tell the whole story, kinda has that AVLU/PC slant, but good statements and all the names are there for additional research. http://www.wbur.org/2012/12/04/truong-confession-lawsuit

a snipet:

After she was released from jail, I asked Truong why she had confessed:

Truong: “I would never, ever in a million years hurt my own child. I wanted to leave. I felt like the only way to leave was to tell them what they wanted to hear. So I just told them I did it.”
