Jim Bakker Statement Analysis

"I sorrowfully acknowledge that seven years ago in an

isolated incident I was wickedly manipulated by

treacherous former friends and then colleagues who

victimized me with the aid of a female confederate.
"They conspired to betray me into a sexual encounter at a

time of great stress in my marital life. Vulnerable as I was

at the time, I was set up as part of a scheme to co-opt me

and obtain some advantage for themselves over me in

connection with their hope for position in the ministry."

He said he then "succumbed to blackmail . . . to protect and spare the ministry and my family."
"Unfortunately, money was paid, in order to avoid further suffering or hurt to anyone, to appease these persons who were determined to destroy this ministry," he said.
"I now, in hindsight, realize payment should have been resisted and we ought to have exposed the blackmailers to the penalties of the law."

Here is the quote with emphasis and analysis.  Extra wording gives us additional information.

"I sorrowfully acknowledge that seven years ago in an isolated incident I was wickedly manipulated by treacherous former friends and then colleagues who victimized me with the aid of a female confederate.

It is important for the subject to not only date the event, but to use the words "isolated" incident.  This indicates that there may have been other things that took place that were not "isolated" as this one was.  To be "isolated" is to be separate from the rest.  What was the "rest" that this particular one was isolated from?

It is likely a pattern of behavior that he wished to disassociate from this action.

Note that additional words which may appear unnecessary tell us quite a bit:

Note the passivity of playing himself as a victim, but perhaps even more striking is that he feels the need to identify the gender of the "confederate."  This is a strong indication that he knows an accusation of homosexuality was circulating at the time of this statement.
"They conspired to betray me into a sexual encounter at a time of great stress in my marital life. Vulnerable as I was at the time, I was set up as part of a scheme to co-opt me and obtain some advantage for themselves over me in connection with their hope for position in the ministry."

He says they conspired to betray him "into" a sexual encounter.  How does one get betrayed "into" a sexual encounter?  This distancing language shows a lack of ownership or responsibility.

"I was set up" is also passive.  The use of passivity seeks to conceal or hide responsibility.  Its use here, strongly, suggests that he was part of the planning.

He said he then "succumbed to blackmail . . . to protect and spare the ministry and my family."

note that the ministry comes before his family as the order in which he speaks is important and may indicate priority.

"Unfortunately, money was paid, in order to avoid further suffering or hurt to anyone, to appease these persons who were determined to destroy this ministry," he said.
"I now, in hindsight, realize payment should have been resisted and we ought to have exposed the blackmailers to the penalties of the law."

"money was paid" is also passive.  He does not want to take responsibility and the use of passive language suggests that he was, as in above, in control.

Note the gender neutral "persons."  This should be taken into consideration with the "female" confederate.

Note the change from "I" to "we" seeks to share responsibility.

Nothing in the statement is his 'fault' or doing.

How it was that purchasing a sexual encounter for him would make them gain position in ministry is something bizarre and unseemly, and unknown to date.

I remember this story.

John Wesley Fletcher went on a national TV show ( I think that it was Geraldo) and said that he did those things to Jim Bakker.

The prostitute who tried to claim that she was a church secretary was on the same show and became enraged at the disclosures because Geraldo had proof that she was a prostitute.

She claimed that she was used by "all those powerful men" to enable them to further their own agendas.

John Wesley Fletcher admitted that she was used and that he had master-minded the plan.

Jim Bakker must have been a compelling target for blackmail to those who wanted to manipulate him because apparently all they had to do was present an opportunity, it appears he was powerless to resist temptation.

I would wager that his whole marital life was "a time of great stress."

"Ministry" hah.

At the time of the "church secretary" incident, Jim's wife Tammy was having an affair with a record producer who she believed could promote her singing career into a profitable and rewarding experience.

Tammy was also abusing substances. She was hospitalized more than once for substance abuse in California.

Jim Bakker tried to cover up her extra-marital affairs and her substance abuse, but after he fell from grace, he was able to acknowledge his enabling.
