The Face of Evil: Shaniya's Killer

One of the most horrifying images:

The victim being carried to her demise by the evil killer. Words cannot describe.

Shaniya is not forgotten and those who investigated this horrific crime will never be the same.

Just why?

Why was this child brought into this world to suffer so?

Classic CONTEMPT in this photo with this asymmetrical pseudo-smile,the left side corner of his mouth is slightly raised higher than the right.

What an evil, well you fill in the rest....

Trigger said...

"Just why?"

Do you mean why did her mother hand her over to a monster?

Trigger said...

It is hard for me to look at the photo of innocent Shaniya in the clutches of that baby killer.

All I can see is a little lamb being prepared for slaughter without a clue as to what that man is going to do to her.

I hope that this monster rots in jail for the rest of his life.

Trigger, Mine were the 1st two posts. After Just Why? I decided to add to it.

I think her mother handed her over in lieu of a drug payment. How could a mother do that? I would cut off my arms and legs before I would hand over my baby.

Anita said...

Trigger, what an image, you are right, he did just the opposite of what The Good Shepherd would have done.

What the mother did was the ultimate betrayal, the opposite of of self sacrifice.

Jennifer, agreed.

Trigger said...

"How could a mother do that?"

That is my question also because it is such a chilling thought. It baffles me because it's cold as ice.

Although I think we'll at least have understanding … in the "next life".

She's at least safe in the arms of Our Lord. No harm can come to her now.

The elevator picture gets me everytime I see it. Sadly, if I saw the two of them getting on the elevator, I would think "how sweet" and have no idea what a monster he was. She looks content and he looks like a caring guardian - so far from the truth. And so scary that something so evil was unfolding and could seem so innocent to anyone who witnessed them together prior to reaching his room.

JOLIET, Ill. – Drew Peterson -- the swaggering Chicago-area police officer who gained notoriety after his much-younger fourth wife vanished in 2007 -- was sentenced to 38 years in prison on Thursday for murdering his third wife.

The sentence came moments after Peterson shocked the courtroom with a rare public outburst of anger as he proclaimed his innocence in the death of Kathleen Savio.

"I did not kill Kathleen!" he shouted at the top of his lungs, emphasizing every word.

Peterson seemed to look across the courtroom at Savio's family. Savio's sister Susan Doman shot back "Yes, you did. You liar!" before the judge ordered sheriff's deputies to remove her from the courtroom.

Illinois does not have the death penalty, and the 59-year-old Peterson had faced a maximum 60-year prison term. The judge gave him four years' credit for time he has served since his arrest.

Jurors convicted Peterson in September in Savio's 2004 death. Neighbors found the 40-year-old's body in a dry bathtub at home with a gash on her head -- her hair soaked in blood.

Peterson is also a suspect in the disappearance of Stacy Peterson -- who was 23-years-old when she vanished -- but he hasn't been charged in her case. It was her disappearance that led authorities to take another look at Savio's death and eventually reclassify it from an accident to a homicide.

Fascination nationwide with Drew Peterson arose from speculation he sought to us family members told the judge Thursday that they hoped she was somehow watching the proceedings.

"I hope she is haunting him in his dreams," said Henry Savio Jr., the victim's brother. "I hope ... she is watching his descent into hell."

Savio added his only consolation was that Peterson would be "rotting in prison for the rest of his life."

The verdict was a vindication for Glasgow and his team, who gambled by putting on a case they conceded was filled with holes.

Prosecutors had no physical evidence tying Peterson to Savio's death and no witnesses placing him at the scene. They were forced to rely on typically barred hearsay -- statements Savio made to others before she died and that Stacy Peterson made before she vanished. Illinois passed a hearsay law in 2008 tailored to Drew Peterson's case, dubbed "Drew's Law," which assisted in making some of the evidence admissible at Peterson's trial.

The hearsay -- any information reported by a witness not based on the witness' direct knowledge -- included a friend testifying that Savio told her Peterson once put a knife to her throat and warned her, "I could kill you and make it look like an accident."

A turning point at the trial came when the defense called a divorce attorney who said he spoke to Stacy Peterson before she vanished. Rather than blunting her credibility, the witness stressed to jurors that Stacy Peterson seemed to truly believe her husband killed Savio.

Earlier Thursday, Judge Edward Burmila denied a defense request to grant Drew Peterson a retrial. Peterson's current attorneys contended his former lead attorney, Joel Brodsky, botched the initial trial and had been the one to decide to call Smith to the stand. Brodsky stepped down from the defense team in November, as his quarrel with Peterson's current lawyers worsened.

Prosecutors suspect Peterson killed his sandy-haired fourth wife because she could finger him for Savio's death, but her body has never been found and no charges have ever been filed. Jurors weren't supposed to link her disappearance to Savio's death, and prosecutors were prohibited from mentioning the subject.

Peterson has maintained his fourth wife ran off with another man and is still alive.

Peterson's attorneys have said they might appeal all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court on grounds Illinois' hearsay law is unconstitutional.

This picture really bothers me, of course because I know how it ends, but also in light of his denials and how they dont fit with this image.

Why is he carrying her cradled like that? Once a child is past infant stage how often are they carried like that? Mostly only when they are asleep (which she is not) or when they are injured. If it was necessary to carry her because she didn't have shoes to wear, then why isn't she upright in an arm/side hold. It makes me think he's already hurt her or sickeningly, he's 'romancing' the act he's about to commit in his own mind. (I dont know how to say what I'm thinking- He gets a hotel room like they are having a romantic rendezvous, he carries her like u would carry someone over the threshold on your wedding night. Obviously there is no 'normal' for a pedophile, but doesn't this seem bizarre? He could have bypassed the hotel, the witnesses and he would have delayed being caught by doing so...but for some reason he chose that setting).

Her little hand holding onto his shoulder brings tears to my eyes...why, why, why does evil like this exist? And knowing that she was offered up by her mother for the most selfish of reasons is sickening. God bless you Shaniya, you deserved so much better.

A skull found a year ago by hunters in a North Carolina forest has been confirmed to be that of a girl who was murdered by her stepmother, it was revealed today.

Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins said Thursday that DNA tests show it was Zahra Baker. But he added that police are still unable to say how the 10-year-old girl died.
Elisa Baker is serving up to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to a second-degree murder charge in connection to the killing and dismembering of her disabled stepdaughter.
The girl was reported missing in October 2011 from her home in the western North Carolina town of Hickory.
Parts of Zahra Baker's remains were found in multiple sites around Hickory shortly after her reported disappearance.
The case captivated the attention of communities here and in Australia, where Zahra had lived before her father moved to the United States to marry Elisa.
The skull was discovered by a hunter April 17, 2012, in the woods off Route 268 in Caldwell County. The cranium was located 20-30 yards off a dirt road, and was not buried in the ground

Officials told WCNC cell phone records place Elisa Baker at the site where the skull was recovered. Prior to her conviction, the woman led invesitgators to several locations where her stedaughter's remains had been dumped.

Working together, the North Carolina SBI’s Crime Lab, Medical Examiner’s Office and Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, were able compare a DNA profile used for the prosecution of Elisa Baker in Zahra’s murder case to the skull to confirm the findings, according to a release from Hickory Police Department.
'This information gives the members of "Team Zahra" mixed emotions,' Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins said in a statement cited by WRAL. 'It brings up the tragedy of Zahra’s death and the life she lived before she was killed, but it also gives us and the community a sense of finally bringing her home.'
The young victim’s surviving relatives have been notified and the skull will be returned to the family for burial in Australia.
Meanwhile, Elisa Baker, 43, is scheduled to be sentenced March 4 in a federal drug conspiracy case.
Zahra's father, Adam Baker, was deported to Australia last January, taking with him some of his daughter's remains.
Mr Baker had moved to Hickory, North Carolina, to be with Elisa Baker, whom he had met online and went on to marry.

Tania Cadogan said...

Ten-year-old Zahra traveled with Mr Baker, who had gained custody of the child when her mother suffered postpartum depression.
But Zahra, who had lost a leg and her hearing to two bouts of bone cancer, soon began to endure abuse at the hands of her new stepmother.
She was beaten, left bruised and locked in a room for hours, according to police.
When she went missing, her disappearance was not reported for weeks. Investigators eventually determined she had been killed on September 24, 2010.
They found her prosthetic leg and parts of her body scattered among animal remains across two counties.

Investigators also found parts of her vertebrae which indicated her spine had been sawed at the neck.
Elisa Baker pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September 2011 and was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in jail. She also pleaded guilty to unrelated charges of bigamy, four counts of obtaining property by false pretense and two counts of financial identity fraud.

She claimed she had found the child dead in her bed and, together with Baker, decided they couldn't report to police it as he was undocumented.
Adam Baker told his wife he 'would take care of it' and cut up the girl's body in a bathroom, his wife told police. He told his wife he needed her help in finding places to dispose of the body, she said.
Following Elisa Baker’s arrest, police found she had been married to someone else while married to Baker. At the time of the trial, he found out he was her seventh husband.

The same old dribble from Drew Peterson..."woe is me". Except he did shout out, "I did not kill Kathleen. " Is this because he knows to say it now?

This crime rattled me to the core. It reminded me of that Westerfield monstor. It makes cry when i think the last face she saw was this animal. I cant think of anything sadder or more horrific than this crime.

What about the face of her other killer? Her own mother who sold her beautiful little daughter into slavery just to get drugs? This man was already known for his evilness and she willingly just handed over her precious girl to him. The mother deserves the death penalty as much as this pedophile POS. Sickening. Literally makes me gag.

I agree, her mother is worse than this POS. No doubt she is as culpable and deserving of the death penalty.

This child was brought into the world to be loved and nurtured and cared for and protected as every child is. She was not born to suffer (beyond what all humans do) or be sacrificed to the twisted desires of MN. Why Shania? Because of the selfish greed of her mother and the perversion of MN. They, the adults chose that evil. It did not have to be. It is heartbreaking and sickening. Her little hand on his shoulder...I want to grab her out of his arms, even now, even though I know in my head she is dead.
Once I was at a science center with an exhibit that would show you your face by mirroring first the left side, so you'd have one face of both left sides, then the right side. It was incredible! Our whole gang tried it and we found that we all had a gentler, softer face and a harder, almost meaner or severe face ~ no exceptions, even the 3 year old! Looking at MN I was reminded of that exhibit and I covered either side of his face and filled in the rest mentally, he is really creepy!!!! No softer, gentler face there, just real creepy. IMO

Red Ryder, I know exactly what you're speaking of regarding the half face concept! I often look at hometown mugshots online and see the differences of the right and left side of the face..There truly is a more hard, more evil (or "bad") side and a softer, more gentle side as you said. I always think about an internal struggle, to which I don't think a lot these psychopaths are privy to understanding. Personally, the left of my face is the "better" side of me. Interesting that beyond asymmetrical notions, others can view something not so blatantly obvious unless you 'study' it for a moment and reflect on what exactly you see - the duality.

Regarding faces- Sometimes I have noticed 'twisted' people have physically twisted faces. The one that comes to mind stalked a college area in Colorado and took a young woman out of the house.
Others have a twisted arrogance, like Drew Petersen -that's what I see here. He looks like he thinks he is superior...

rob said...

'How could the mother do that?'
She is not a mother. She bore the child, unwanted. She asked for her back, I'm sure in order to collect benefits for her. She sold her to pay a debt. She was merely an asset, whose value was monetary.
This child means more to us, than to the woman who bore her.

Normally contempt is visible on the face as a kind of half smile. One corner of the mouth is drawn inwards and upwards, signifying an extreme dislike that is different to disgust and anger. It shows a feeling that someone or something is inferior, lacking or worthless, and is a very dangerous emotion, and is more often the expression associated with hate than Anger or Disgust would be.

I pray the mother is being charged with murder. Why is there so much evil in this world?

I will never understand why the father isn't in jail for his part. He should be rotting in jail with the stepmother.

Right on mark, John!...

Add to the fact, this is a 'pretty boy'.. His eyebrows are shaped into that design, they are not natural..... I'm sure his attire is up to par.. His arrogance is amplfied by his appearance of him being put-together.. That's probably why he 'hoteled' vs. 'moteled'.... His hairstyle on the male represents more the thugness of the drug dealers(Jamacian).. At least up here in the East it is( Philly, NY)

Red Ryder, very well put.

Evil exists because this is a fallen world- the knowledge of good AND evil coexist here. This world illustrates the properties of both good and evil, and I wish I had never had to know of evil.

Evil grows and multiplies when it is allowed and nurtured in a society that turns its back on God.

Apple, Shaniya lived happily with her father who loved her, until the mother came into her life and wanted to have this visitation with her. She convinced the father to allow it and the rest is history, but I think he was lacking in discernment.
