Ryan Ferguson on 48 Hours Tonight

Was Ryan Ferguson falsely convicted of killing on Halloween, 2001?

Or...Was he present at the location of the crime, but did not kill?

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50141420n

9PM EST

Charles Erickson was the witness who testified against Ryan.

Did Ryan lie about his whereabouts, making his case worse?

Do you have a strong opinion on this case?

Will you be able to listen to the statements with the 'ears' of what you have learned here?

I have a strong opinion from watching the police interview tapes. Thanks for keeping Ryan's case in the public eye.

OT- Have there been any updates on Hailey Dunn? I found two Facebook accounts that belong to her mother, while she does post pictures publicly of Hailey for awareness, there are no public post. I still think she knows something though, so I am not defending her, but I was just wondering about any case updates.

His eyes are so clear, his eye movements so authentic, he's innocent before I even listen to him speak.

Compare his to the black eyes of BJD, the clouded eyes of John Ramsey, and the opaque eyes of Patsy, or the phoney eye movement of Baby Lisa's mom.

Hell, compare his eyes to Obama's.

Layla said...

I noticed that too--about his clear eyes! They look
honest--not hiding guilt. This is the 1st I've heard of the case--I'll have to watch the show tonight.

Isn't Boyd the one they think may have murdered him. He just said "It was a normal night"

Jo said...

Reporter to Boyd: What do you think happened to him?
Boyd: I don't know.

BostonLady said...

Boyd was the last to see him. He heard the victim's last statement. And he did use the statement "it was a normal night". hmmm

BostonLady said...

Erickson said when he first spoke to police "This is like a fantasy, a dream". Then they fed him the information of how the victim died.

I liked that it was noted they should be asking open ended questions. Right in line with statement analysis.

BostonLady said...

Erickson said "I created this story, I lied". wow.

The police interview was a sham.

Jo said...

Being so close to a college, I am guessing a couple college students stumbled on the body just after the murder and ran off. They may have been drunk or high and did not want to come forward that night. It is too bad they didn't take more time to find the individuals that were at the scene the night of the murder. They should have questioned everyone in that dorm.

Layla said...

I just watched the show 48 hrs. 1st impression--The black guy who worked w the sports writer is grinning through the whole interview. Something weird about him. I also noticed he said "it was a normal night".
My impression: Ferguson's friend made the whole thing up as he is now saying. Neither he or Ferguson killed him. The cops and district attorney just wanted to close the case. They need to get a psychiatrist to explain that Ferguson's friend is disturbed to the court.

BostonLady said...

I can't believe Ryan could be found guilty with no evidence tying him to the murder. It was based solely on Erickson and the sex offender. Both recanted and the judge will not consider it was mistake.

And yet, the multiple missing children cases where LE has everything but the body cannot be prosecuted???

What is wrong with our system?

Jo said...

It would be interesting to get Boyd on Peter's show.

Layla said...

It's political--the district attorney who told the sex offender to lie is now a judge. He will look real bad if the conviction is overturned (as well he should).

Layla said...

I agree--get Boyd on the show!

This is one of the reasons I started learning SA..I have always felt him innocent... I have not heard his actual statements..so after 3 years or so..i would like to revisit this case with his actual words... thank you <3 sella

Please help find Ayla
Is Boyt Kents coworker who has guilty knowledge indicators in his language? I think it's because he may have seen/sensed something as he pulled out of the parking lot, and he didn't return to help Kent. Somrthing like survivors guilt.

Erickson said "I created this (shows closeness, he is talking about his present testimony) story, I lied".

In his original statement he uses lots of "I remember"'s.

The show is called 48 hours Mystery, the only Mystery is why are they giving Kent's murderers so much air time? In the interest of truth and unbiased reporting CBS should also read aloud Erickson's confession, perhaps re-enact the crime for the viewers. In his original statement he recalls seeing Kents blood on his hands and washing them off in a stream. I believe him.
Is this a repeated episode?

Chuck Erickson has a mental disorder. He can be made to say or agree with anything. The tape of his interrogation where he is being bullied into agreeing to all these things and fed the information of what he supposedly did is nauseating.

For those who are suspicious of Michael Boyd, here is a little more fuel for the fire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHONDPS6H_o

this happened in my hometown. it was complete chaos for a while here, the police were pulling over many of my college-age friends. they had no clue who did it, believe me. so when Ericson came forward with his "dream" story, they pounced. Crane was shady through the whole thing, and the good ol' boys network of police and such. that a friend can dream that you did something terrible with him, like commit a brutal murder, and no one questions it, is utterly bizarre and terrifying. that it could end up with an innocent young man in prison for so long, is a tragedy. I've not for one minute thought Ryan had a thing to do with this murder. I can't understand why he isn't out yet, it's so unfair and horrendous. Crane is now a judge, and it would be disaster for him to admit he was wrong or did wrong now, that is very true. I get a funny feeling about Boyd also, always have. he has put himself there minutes before the murder, with Kent in the parking lot. now Trump says he was lying, Ericson says he made it up, and still the one person who's story hasn't changed, Ryan, sits in prison?? after all these years?? simply disgusting.

Another possibility of what happened to Kent Heitholt is the so-called "game" of knockout king. http://acpionline.com/2012/10/29/knockout-king/

This has been a growing problem in cities across the country, including Columbia, for many years now.

and another important thing, Kent's belt was used to strangle him. that says this was very personal to me. Kent was first struck when he was leaning down to get in his car. they found him with the car door open, if I recall correctly. so he was surprised from behind, snuck up on and attacked while he wasn't looking. who says he saw Kent getting into his car the last time he saw him?? Boyd. there's a lot of info in these court documents http://www.abc17news.com/media/attachments/news/963.pdf

Pistorius Brother To Stand Trial Over Death

The brother of Oscar Pistorius is also facing charges over the death of a woman, Sky News has learned.7:32am UK, Sunday 24 February 2013

The brother of Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius is facing charges over the death of a woman in a car crash in 2010, Sky News has learned.

Oscar Pistorius was granted bail
Carl Pistorius, who was present in court over the past week to support Oscar, is charged with culpable homicide over the alleged accidental death of a female motorcyclist.

His lawyer Kenny Oldwage, who also represents Oscar Pistorius, confirmed the charges to Sky's Alex Crawford.

Carl Pistorius appeared in court just two days before his brother's bail hearing last week.

Crawford said in Britain the equivalent charge to culpable homicide is manslaughter.

Carl Pistorius' trial is set to begin at the end of March.

Oscar Pistorius, meanwhile, spent Saturday at his uncle's home in an affluent suburb of Pretoria, the South African capital, after a judge released him on bail on Friday.

He has been charged with premeditated murder in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day.

But the athlete denies murder, saying he killed the 29-year-old model accidentally. He says he opened fire after mistaking Miss Steenkamp for an intruder in his home.

Carl Pistorius, with his sister, was in court this week to support Oscar
The Oscar Pistorius case took a dramatic turn last week when it was revealed the lead investigator, Hilton Botha, was facing charges of attempted murder himself.

Botha, who denies the charges, was questioned at the 26-year-old athlete's bail hearing, where he gave an often confused testimony.

But the day after he was questioned in court, a judge dropped him from the case because of the charges.

Prosecutors admitted that the timing of the attempted murder charges had been "totally weird".

Miss Steenkamp was killed on Valentine's Day
On Saturday, Miss Steenkamp's father spoke about the case, saying Oscar Pistorius will "suffer" alone if he is lying about how his daughter died.

"It doesn't matter how much money he has and how good his legal team is, he will have to live with his conscience if he allows his legal team to tell lies on his behalf," Barry Steenkamp told Beeld, an Afrikaans newspaper.

"But if he is telling the truth then maybe I can forgive him one day. If it didn't happen the way he said it did, he must suffer, and he will suffer... only he knows."

Her mother June said that the Pistorius family had sent a card and flowers offering condolences for the death of her daughter but she added it meant little because: "They are not to blame."

Peter,
Why sometimes when I tell the truth do I "act" like I'm telling a lie?

Is it that to be believed is important for me?

Thank you.

All the way through the program Ryan never issues a reliable denial, until the end were he says he is innocent. My personal opinion is that this would have been a perfect place and oppotunity to issue a reliable denial..

On the emotions of Ryan he is very passive,he doesnt show any anger, disgust or contempt at all towards Erickson.Placed in his position i would be furious to say the least.

I would have liked to have seen Ryan take the stand in cross examination.

The evidence is week against Ryan, that doesn't mean he didn't do it.People have been murdered before were there has been no evidence. It can and does happen.

I don't know if he is guilty or not,i'm on the fence with this one.I know it's a cop out,but hay i'm no expert...JMO..

One more thing, could Ryan have spiked Erickson and this is why he doesn't remember. Was there a Toxicology report done on them both?

Giles,

You'd have to give more description than you did. Sometimes, people who are concerned about being believed will emphasis with, "I did not..." instead of the more casual "didn't" ; yet in the SCAN technique, both are considered reliable.

I am interested in the lack of reliability denial that John and others mentioned here.

Is there something amiss?

JustAnotherMom,

very little to report other than what you picked up on: mother's guilty behavior.

It is not so much that she "knows something" as she and Adkins are the only two suspects in the case.

There is something about this case that I do think mother does not know, and if asked, would pass a polygraph...

anyone venture a guess?

Peter, so glad you are following this. Anxious for you Statement Analysis of interviews and transcripts of testimony, etc. Columbia is my hometown, everyone has a connection to some individual in this case either through work, family, school... The Heitholt family needs answers as to who murdered Ken. Of interest is a local blog, The Columbia Heart Beat - offering its own theory of the murder. The proximity of the Tribune building to, then By George's is close, however the thought of 2 young white men venturing in the direction of the Tribune with the idea to get money is odd. The area on which the Tribune sits is near section 8 housing, high crime rates and drugs.

So yest Peter I have strong opinions; however I believe a lot of mistakes where done in the investigation, prosecution and defense.

I don't believe BJD knows the location of Hailey's remains.

Tania Cadogan said...

I think she would pass on the do you know where Hailey is.

Hailey has been moved at least once, she may know where she was originally, she does not know where she is currently.

veruca said...

Yeah...she doesn't know where hailey's body is...only her little boy friend does.

Anonymous said...

Was Ryan given a polygraph?

It's a shame that neither of the boys' parents got them a lawyer like John Picerno. This would have been a case his services could be appreciated fully.

I did notice that Ryan said "Absolutely not" when asked if he did it. Then again, the prosecutor on the witness stand said the same thing when asked a similar question, sorry can't remember the exact question.

Aren't those sensitivities?

Ryan's demeanor is so believable. When you compare him to the cocky Drew Peterson, you cannot help but think him innocent.

Remember that a program like this is highly edited and the producers put in the video that they felt was most useful.

There have been several shows done on this case and I'm sure Ryan issued reliable denials in others. I am going to try to take the time to go back and refresh my memory.

Yeah Ferguson's friend has a mental disorder. He feels he deserves to be punished and so had little difficulty being made to "confess" to something he didn't do. Since he was with Ryan that night, he involved him in the confession. I am shocked that the defense team did not involve a psychiatrist to speak up to the court about his mental problems.

Layla said...

My impression of why Ryan is passive a) he could be medicated and/or b) I get the impression he is well aware he is dealing with insanity both literally within his friend, his accuser, and metaphorically, within the courts and justice system. He seems bewildered while also seemingly afraid to do or say much of anything because he realizes his fate is held in the hands of a totally unbalanced cuckoo.

Layla: Perhaps a psychiatrist could analyze the remorseful letter of apology that Erickson wrote to Kents family. Better yet, have a psychiatrist or analyst figure out how two convicted murderers are getting help from a national television station smearing the reputations of Kents friends and co-workers in an attempt to cast blame.

This man is innocent. I am so upset by this. Years behind bars and you didn't do it. Wow.

Anonymous said...

I find Ryan Ferguson body language to be open and honest. He has made a reliable denial.

What is terribly upsetting is for the prosecutor and the detectives to take gross advantage of Chuck Erikson, a young man with a history of drugs/alcohol abuse who obviously has brain impairment. Chuck was 16 years old at the time, did he not live at home? Did his parents not notice anything unusual when their son came home, i.e. blood, weapon, wounds, etc? The kid did not properly describe the weapon nor the location where the crime took place.

LE is not suppose to feed details of a crime to suspects, yet this unlikeable detective does. WHY? I also find the prosecutor to be dishonest and a likely narcissist. He likely pressured the sexual offender into saying it was those two boys. mho The last person with the deceased is not even investigated by LE? WHY? The crime only happened within 6 minutes after Boyd left. Someone was lying in wait, or was it the last person with the victim? The crime definitely fits the "personal crime" model.

The good news is that Ryan now has a pit bull attorney. YES! May the Truth win!
